I have noticed there is a bunch of loki methods floating around, and I for one would like some confusion cleared... which loki method should i use? or what do they depend on? and does it matter which rom i am flashing? Or do they all work?
FYI I am on a Bell I337M Version
1. ShappyPengiuns [RECOVERY] SGH-I337 OUDHS Recovery 1.0.3.4 - now with auto-loki
2. KToonsez [KERNEL] KT-SGS4-TW-JB
3. Loki-Doki [FLASHABLE FIX]
A simple search would answer these questions. You are not AT&T and you are not Verizon...are you sure you even need Loki?
Read...Read...Read.
It's not that hard.

They are correct READ, they all work, just find the one that works for you. It is not hard. agreed!
If you have root then just go to Play and install GooManager and let it install TWRP recovery which has Loki built in now.
My understanding is if you need it its there and if you don't it wont matter.
Edit: My understanding was wrong! I think its the other recovery that will, but dont count on it until you verify yourself.

To reiterate what Scott already pointed out, the OP is on Bell. Loki doesn't even apply to him.

Twrp does not have auto loki. You still have to flash a kernel or loki doki.
Tough Crowd OP
But, they are right and looking out for you.
Need to read more than the OP pages on this, if you haven't.
Most of the threads are short enough still to scan whole thread.
At least read first/last 20 pages, don't want to lose a great phone
Also, if you don't normally do it--back up phone an sdcard regular--put copies on PC.

Right you are sir. Damn good thing I cant get anything to download right now anyway. I think to much reading has made all the threads run together in my head. I will edit that earlier reply to avoid the continuing confusion.

So LokiDoki does waht after you flash a ROM? Is it the ROM that gets Loki'd or it seeks out the actual Kernel thats installed by the ROM?
Thanks for your insight?
I ask because some say if you have a loki'd kernal the ROM doesnt matter.
There is a loki thread in original development that finally helped an old fart like me understand--
good info

If you use a loki kernel everytime you flash a rom, it will work.

i dono why. i don understand at all. why do we need to flash this, reboot, flash this and that, and then flast this......
come on! i am now in LP5 by just flashing the factoryfs and zImage, followed by a wipe and that's all!! why do we need to care about the boot loader? and why to concern about to repartition it or not? pls, do it your way. flashing a rom is only a file copy process!!
i respect all ppls' work. but for me, i prefer to let the user happy by flashing a rom or finishing a task in one single step.
New installation steps for ICS Stunner @ Stunner Topic. Much Simple.
These steps didn't work for LP1 based ROM and it broke root previously.

My understanding is that If you flash the bootloader you will risk bricking your phone also no way to revert back to GB.
Does your simple way preserve root and allow for an easy way back to GB? If it does could you provide some simple, fool-proof instructions? Thanks.
We're finally seeing developers include kernel and modem files in their ROMS, so it's getting easier...before it was, "flash this base, reboot, wipe, flash this base, reboot, flash this base, flash it again and reboot, flash my ROM 2x, reboot 2x, enjoy. Repeat from beginning if you messed up." Okay, so a little over the top, but that's what it felt like to me. I'm definitely happy with the progress being made!
actually all i wanted is to push the rom makers to go a step further, by telling them that even by just flashing the zimage and system will do so they should provide proper script to run the installation automatically. i am glad to see the procedures become simplier. but on the other hand i hope ppl will pay more time to prepare the installation steps and be user friendly

root permissions can be retained or restored. back to gb is totally possible. it all depends on the rom makers to make it or not

I don't think it's allowed to ask "What is the best" questions since it starts a lot of arguing here on XDA, but this thread should help narrow your search, once you've identified what you are looking for in a rom. http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2303917

No one can tell you which is best for YOU but YOU
the question pretty much is self explanatory, i would like know what Recoveries are out there so far for i337m other than the basic CWM and TWRP
EDIT: I made a goof when i posted this thread i meant recoveries not kernels.

If there is no backup/restore option than you are in stock recovery and won't be able to flash anything anyways. Please visit the I337 guide in my signature for the next steps after obtaining root. Cheers
We really should get you and Ax's guides/how to's stickied. They are great. If guide has no post for a day or two they get pushed down list. And folks may not see them as not everyone searches well.
I know Ax wasn't interested, but maybe we can get him to change his mind
How about it Kenny--
Without hi-jacking this gentleman's thread...sorry OP.
The reason I do not want a sticky, is if you are on a cell phone and doing xda, you have to physically use the stickies button, and there went half the traffic, that is having to use an extra step for non-readers, an extra step is disastrous. You know, to much work.
Now if you have a solution, I am all for it!
The Ax's opinion only!

Sounds to me you don't have root. If you don't have SU in the apps, your not rooted, and if it is asking you to install SU, you are not rooted...the way I use to check root is terminal emulator from the market, run that, and at the prompt type SU, if it says command not found, you are not rooted.
You want a little advice...you need to flash a TW rom first, get used to whats going on, then go for the complicated roms.
The Ax says....again my suggestion only!

Not right off, I open XDA app go to my Favorites, this Forum obviously, open General Section and Stickies are a choice at top along with Topics and Announce. I just don't see the issue vs having your great Guides/How To's available. I think most folks on the app or tapatalk are experienced and know for the most part what they are doing. But, the noobies will be on the pc and see the Threads quicker if Stickied. IMHO Sir

I think you do not understand how to root if there is no recovery. keep researching. you're a long way from safely rooting your phone.
OP, if your S4 is on the MF3 firmware then look around in the general and q&a sections. there's some material there that will point you in the right direction.
in short, if you are on MF3, you can root only (which i advise against for beginners as there currently is no recovery option). cheers

My question wasn't "what can I do with root?" I wanted to know if it was possible to "unroot" which apparently it is not yet. I would want to root to be able to get more out of titanium backup and Tasker as well as block ads. But thanks for the help.
And yes, I am on MF3. I had root on the prior os and I had to unroot to get the MF3 update which had features I wanted. I just don't know the proper terms I guess. I don't know what a recovery is. To unroot before, I had the two files I needed to delete. I foget what they are. I am sure you guys know. I used to always have my iOS jailbroken. I didn't need to understand too much about it. I could just follow instructions and jailbreak. It was too easy to unjailbreak.
Last time I rooted, it was easy. The unrooting was nerve-wracking because I couldn't get the update I wanted without it. I've read how to root now... Again I can follow directions. It just wasn't clear that you can't unroot until a recovery is is out there. I thought maybe a recovery was needed if you used a custom rom. I just wanted to use the stock rom and unroot if I wanted to.
Again, I'm not a hacker, just a user that wants more and not a whole lot of time to learn all the in and outs.

I suggest you do a little more research. There is a thread with a method to unroot that multiple people have claimed works with MF3. Of course, you never said what firmware you have...and it does make a difference. But honestly, don't take the advice if you think you don't need it and do what you want Good luck.

You were right, recovery is used to flash custom ROM, back up and restore ROM; but there is no recovery for MF3.
If you just want to use Titanium Backup, adblock then root is enough. And you can unroot.
