Ok. I need root and su and busybox for my Acer 500 with 3.2.1. Is it possible yet?
Hmmm.... this post was about 8 posts under yours.
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1307539
If in doubt, contact TimmyDean He's becoming a root-master lately
I am in the same ship. I have an iconia a500 with stock 3.2.1.
Have been studying but no clear answer. We can not flash rooted firmware cause we can not have cwm on a non rooted tab. Can someone write or... rewrite clear instructions?
Please, we are not experts like you people, but some steps that look clear to you are not so clear to us. Please respond.

Would you like this spoon fed to you with a warm glass of milk as well?
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1307539
Ok, just to be sure. This is on the first line milkman and thanks for being ironic. As I wrote, some of us are new to android, and tried to study, but we need some things to be clear to us. "Ok, after messing around with 3.2 I decided to fix the rooting issues without downgrading"
I am on 3.2.1. So I need to downgrade it to 3.2?
Why wouldnt I downgrade to 3.0? Isnt rooting easier? What problems could I face?
Yes, you do downgrade to 3.0
Its extremely unstable everything force closes, so obtain root, flash cwm and get OFF stock rooted 3.0 quickly as you can
Stock rooted 3.2.1 is (one of) the best bets for ROMs for our tab right now. Flash that and then do some research into additional ROMs, if you want to.

Well, did anybody bother to download and read the pdf or word doc file in the attached link above? Because it sounds like you didn't. I don't have 3.2.1 as I have a 501, so I have no need to perform this, but the doc even has pictures with circles and arrows and a paragraph explaining each step with warnings and notes in red.
After the root is done, he even has a tool to install busybox. (you may want to install the superuser app first I believe he says)
I really don't know how much simpler it could be.
I suggest, if you have a question about the root app, as I stated previously above, you contact TimmyDean on his thread about any confusion you may possibly have.
If you are unfamiliar with certain terminology used, AndroidCentral has a good Android dictionary.
Honestly tho, it sound like you all didn't bother to download and read the doc or pdf.
You are 100% right. I read everything except that one you said. Just finished flashing. VERY EASY, and GOD BLESS YOU my friend.
Didnt understand the backdoor tools OTA and busybox. My final question is, now that I have finished flashing (first step) am I rooted or do I have to complete the other steps?
What did you flash? Back to stock?

Yeah Yeah Yeah,,, act first, read instructions later
From what I understand, the backdoor tools will keep you from getting OTA updates. Maybe I'm wrong, but I really wasn't interested in that part. If you ever recieve notice from Acer, DO NOT install it. Usually, Acer likes to ship new bootloaders with their updates, just to mess with us "rooters".
Go to the Market, and get Superuser app and let it install.
I believe at this point, you have to run Install the busybox Tools (busybox folder), as I believe it gives you the option to install Busybox and Superuser tools. (not sure what exactly are the superuser tools, but he seems to think it's necessary, as when you run the app, it tell you to have superuser installed first)
And I think that's all you need. Then select Reboot the system.
The easiest way to check if you have superuser access, is to download an app that requires it.
---------- Post added at 11:24 PM ---------- Previous post was at 11:15 PM ----------
Oh, 1 more thing. I don't think TimmyDeans app installs CWM recovery. He didn't specify this. So you may want to post a note or read his threads as somebody else may have asked the same thing.
CWM Recovery is necessary to flash custom roms. If you get root access, then probably you need to download AcerRecovery from the market, run it, and install Thor's Recovery image. (pretty painless).
And that's it. Then you have to follow instructions VERY CAREFULLY when flashing things, and always understand fully what you're doing.

Better to ask questions, and avoid a brick, and definately read the instructions seveal times.
Oh yeah, a tidbit, make sure you hit "quote", so we know who you're replying to
Yup, it's all in the guide and if you get the latest versions (V4) there is nothing to load. It loads all the rooting tools and busybox stuff for you.
The other tools in the package are things that allow you to turn OFF OTA's so you're not blindsided by an OTA breaking root. Or you can take an OTA when you want and not when ACER wants you too. The backdoor tools are tools designed to stop an OTA from breaking root. However, V4 has one of these techniques already installed therefore if you don't turn off OTA's; most likely you'll keep root (again most likely, not guaranteed).

Exactly. We were all n00bs at one time. Lest we ever forget.
"The only stupid question, is the one that never gets asked" (from an old guy long ago who has since traveled to "a better world")
Speaking for a lot of regulars here, we would rather answer n00b questions, (and yes, we will give some mocking in it), than to deal with a bricked tab later.
So you go ahead and ask those questions
Sometimes, users will give you an absolute hard time. Pay no attention to it. It's because we want you to use your resources. Do your searches. Be polite, and you'll find we'll help you in all that is possible. Sometimes, we don't have the answer (rarely), but others may.
And no, we do not always spend all day on the forums. Some of us live in different countries, with different time zones. And some have jobs and family also. So if certain people don't respond, well, give it some hours.

Ok, so... I'm not new to rooting, but i AM new to rooting a nexus 7.
I had it all rooted and installed Baked's new ROM, and it gave me superuser permission when I booted into the OS the first time.. but then I restarted the nexus and bam. root was gone, superuser no longer worked... had to reload my backup of my original rom, root is back again.
I'm running CWM touch as recovery (latest update) had OTA voodoo rootkeeper (which won't help though because its a fresh install right?)
Can anyone tell me what is going on? I'm a bit lost... usually when you root. You are rooted. period. This is a new game to me.
Use this program to root it again mate:

On the top left corner, it lets you choose your model and ROM.
Just choose custom ROM for any non official ROM's.

thanks! just downloaded it ... any suggestions on a great ROM? i've tried a few, but there are so many. lol!
update youre superuser or supersu app. i suggest you get the supersu app from the market since superuser is a bit buggy on jelly bean. open the supersu app, itll ask to update the binaries, do it. no need wasting your time "rerooting".
No worries, glad I could help Unfortunately, I've not ventured into the different ROM's yet. Should really....... So I can't recommend any. Sorry Though I do like the look of the ones that have the real tablet UI, might try one of them in a few days.....
Though you know what your doing, if you do need any help, you know where I am
If you could press the thanks button mate, I would really appreciate it Cheers

with any nexus device, there really isnt a "rooting". from scratch all you need to do is fastboot oem unlock(bootloader), fastboot flash a custom recovery, and either flash the su binaries or a custom rom in your recovery. no root toolkits needed. thats whats awesome about any nexus.

Disclaimer: if anything bad happened to your phone using the method provided by me, I will take no responsibility! Use at your own risk.
This post is meant to provide an alternative way (newbies may find it easier) to root your phone.
If you want to flash custom rom and kernel, you will need to
1st, root your device;
2nd, flash cwm recovery.
Both of the jobs can be done by apps. This method is for normal noobs like me, you do not need to connect your phone to PC. You could always use other ways such as Odin to perform the same jobs, it's your choice.
Then, step by step here:
1) install framaroot app from here: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2130276
2) open the app, press aragorn, reboot, done
now, you have your device rooted, then, go on to install cwm recovery
3) install rom manager app from here: https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.koushikdutta.rommanager
4) open the app, flash cwm recovery ( it will download the recovery and flash it ), reboot, done.
now, you have installed the cwm recovery and you are ready to enjoy your rooted phone, for example, flash custom roms :good:
remarks: If some app needed you to have busybox installed in your device, go download busybox from here: https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.jrummy.busybox.installer and install the busybox using the app.
All done by 3 simple free apps.
of course, when something bad happened to your phone, you may still need to use Odin to recover your phone, so, you are suggested to learn how to use Odin as well.
:good:

Roots it but you can't flash custom roms. So you're right, it is misleading. Most people who want "root" really want to flash custom ROMs and Kernels. It's not really "root" that they need for this but the process in those "misleading post" actually gives you the ability to do this where as framaroot doesn't.
Agree for most users the jobs not done and they then have to post how do install recovery .
Much prefer a one stop root and recovery .

Oh, I forgot to post the easy way to install cwm recovery here, maybe i have posted in another post. Actually, root is the first steps, the second step is to install cwm recovery. This is easy too.
After you use my method to root your device, reboot, install the rom manager ( from cwm in playstore), you could install the cwm using that app, so easy.
You don't need to use your pc or odin to do both jobs( root and install cwm recovery). This is what most people wanted and it is so easy that you cannot break your device at any chance.
Of cos , if you want busy box, you could download an app called busybox installer, install busy box with that app, so easy again.
So now we .....
1) root with framaroot
2) install recovery
3) install busy box
.........which will take us back to doh, re, me............cf root that does it all in one!

Usual cause of a boot-loop or brick is not odin .
After root few use odin .
Standard boot loop error is user not bothering to read the faqs and guides .

I think this is the easiest way. This is how I do it.

Then flash recovery using mobile Odin. Every time and it works like a charm. No computer needed.
However it kinda worries me how easy Framaroot roots the device!!

I'd definitely recommend mobile Odin over ROM manager. It's not the safest app out there.
I'd still prefer to use a pc though because you're going to need it no matter what if it screws up for some reason. The guides we have here are tried and tested and engineered in such a way that a little bit of knowledge is acquired along the way. There's a lot of reading to be done but it IS essential.
As mentioned above, read the faqs. I feel that "quick and easy" is detrimental to our cause.... and its people like myself, slappy and jje who have to help people doing damage because they don't understand

Modifying /system ALWAYS carries a risk. if I were you, I'd put a disclaimer in post 1.
To have root, you need to modify /system 3 times. That's 3
1) You need to force an exploit to give you access to /system
2) You need to insert the su binary to /system/bin
3) You need the Super user apk forced into /system/app
...so please do not say "Will do not damage" because you do not know that.
Then, this only gives you root. If you want to do anything more than root, you still have to flash recovery. Flashing recovery modifies the /recovery partition. This also carries RISK.
Please be aware, you did not discover this method. It's not new, many people knew about it already. It's not as safe as you think

@rootSU, I really have no intention to create fight here. My intention is simple, which is to provide a simple way to root for newbies.
I refer to the thread that provides the app rather then just providing the link to download the file so that people will know what they are downloading.
For newbies, I truely believe that installing app to perform the job is the easiest and safe way.

I agree that it may be the "easiest and safest way"....however, it still leaves new people with no working knowledge of Odin, and no gain in knowledge as well........to my mind, and many others, that is a one step fast forward, 2 steps back, as soon as problems occur, you have a panicking user, with no knowledge of how to flash back to stock, posting for help here, there and everywhere.
XDA always has been and always will be a place of learning and information sharing.
I'm not here to disagree with your thread, or to show any disrespect.....I'm just making this post for people coming here looking for the elusive "quick and simple " solution.....in the hope they may read it and take time to consider if they really want to learn from the ground up or wether they want to end up in a situation where they lack basic knowledge and have to swallow their pride and ask for the the basics to be explained.....even though they are already rooted and running "da neatest Rom eva"
Yea, let people choose what they want.

Does it help users understand root? No. Quite the opposite
Is it Safe? No safer than any other method
Please try not to be too precious about your guide. We are being constructive. Its us who have to fix peoples phones. When they have no knowledge of what they have even done, its unfair for us to have to first teach them the basics they need to understand just so we can help them.
Some people just aren't meant to root but this guide gives those people the ability to root anyway and that my friend, is far more dangerous than any application or process

What version is the phone? Does it end in MF3, MDL...? I can't speak for the other version but I'm on MF3, if thats your phone than you can't root thru Odin. I'll link you the method in which I rooted...just in case its a MF3 version.

nvm i got it working, and flashed recover via rom manager but.... when i hold power + home + volume up it doesn't bring me to recovery it just vibrates twice
Apperantly the thread I used to root my phone with has been closed, I read a few pages...not really sure why but I think I read a post were it was deemed unstable or something. Any who, read up on this and only do it if the phone is a MF3 version. And before you get too far ahead of yourself with your buddied phone, make sure you read, read and read some more...there is a lot of stuff out there that isn't compatible with all gs4's (roms etc). Know what version your phone is and know what it can run and what it can't.

What can I say, sometimes I like being a douche. But looking at your next comment it sounds like you didn't do enough research. There's 2 threads here covering rooting for mf3 and pre mf3 both of which can be found by searching. If you had bothered to read the faq or even answer the other guys post, you may have been warned that you can't flash the mf3 rom with Odin and will brick yourself. All you can do with mf3 right now is root and SS. It sounds like you're jammed up, maybe I'm wrong, which I hope I am, but I didn't ask a single question when it came to rooting because the info was easily found.

Im not fimilar with that version...I'd suggest finding a root thread here and read the first few pages to see if it works for your version. Did you say you didn't root via a method found here?

Well I just did a random Google search with your version and I quickly found this. I'm not sure if your phone is ok with what you did but I'm guessing this method should have been the one you should have used, maybe I'm wrong.

Hey for some reason doing the vol up method isn't working but app called quick boot did the trick...
not used to having alot of versions for a phone but how would i know which roms worked wit the i337m?
nvm ill just flash golden eye
but what does it mean by I337M USERS MAY EXPERIENCE DATA DROPS! - 4.3TW Baseband Needed!
and how would you wipe my phone clean then if i don't use twrp?
"never choose to wipe data with twrp!! the option where you type *yes* to confirm!!"
and if i can't find a 4.3 kernal for my phoen does that mean i can't flash that?
Like I said, I'm completely unfamiliar with your model. This of us running MF3 are limited to what we can use (no custom recovery for us). Each ROM you look at should have detailed instructions on how to flash. If your going to try GoldenEye do your self a favor and read the first few pages and last few pages (at least) for feedback and bugs. Maybe someone else can chime in that has the same version.

Ok, I've done some searching for you and here's some of the information I think you'll need.
All of this info is based on me searching on the I337M MG1 ROM. If this is incorrect, let me know and I'll see what else I can find.
All these are assuming you can get into download mode and might be able to use ODIN to flash back to stock. Also any and ALL data on the phone, kiss goodbye as I'm sure most of these procedures will wipe your phone clean. Lastly these are just suggestions and what I would do, I take no responsibility if you screw your friend's phone up even more. You're doing this at your own risk.
1) flash stock ROM:
here's a list of the stock roms READ THE THREAD FOR YOUR ANSWERS ON HOW TO INSTALL IT.
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2269304
IF you were able to get the phone back working on a stock rom.
2) Root (READ EVERY SINGLE POST, THEN READ THEM AGAIN. Once you feel you understand what they're telling you to do, read ALL the posts again, and once more for good measure and while you're rooting, leave the window open so you can reference it.)
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2293800
3) install TWRP. This is easy, but as I'm not familiar with the device here's someone else who's done it and what seemed to work for them.
here's a post of someone asking a question and the responses:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?p=46038092&highlight=twrp#post46038092
here's another post on how someone installed TWRP:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?p=44010460&highlight=twrp#post44010460
4) install a custom ROM: This one is tricky, you'll need to READ the entirety of the first couple of posts in EACH ROMs thread. Then search the thread for your model number (I337M if I'm not mistaken) as someone has asked if they can install the ROM already and it should be answered.
If you're successful your friend's phone should be working. Lastly, before you root/flash/ROM your friend's phone, know the phone, know the community and know the search and you'll do great.
I hope this helps.
Good work with the write up, I havent seen any activity from him since lastnight...he also started a "bricked" thread. Most ppl from time to time will get lazy or not exhuast all known avenues before posting threads but everyone should at least know what they have for a phone and what it can and can not do. This is just my opinion. This isn't to say the op was lazy in his search, maybe he did all he could do...I just wished folks would read the Roms etc to make sure they are compaditble.

Thanks, I spent 20 minutes making this, mostly reading the posts to see if they come close to what he needs. Maybe I should teach a class on googling and searching because that's all I did. I do hope it helps him and anyone else who runs across the same issue.

i am not sure i can describe the issues correctly, and i will sound dumber than i already feel.
basically i flashed a rom without doing a backup. something went wrong, and i wound up with a non-working phone. thought it was the 72-hour google hold, but after 72 hours i still had a non-functioning phone. it turned out to be that i needed to flash a factory image, and then re-flash twrp and re-root.
@simms22 walked me through the steps, and provided links so i knew where to look.
i definitely learned a lot about fastboot, and adb, but it just shows how much i still need to learn.
again, thanks for being patient.
can you quote his reply here where he stated the steps and links
I don't mean to be rude or something but really this mobile has a lot of outdated guides and new tips that it is not easy for newbie to find the correct way without reading A LOT or creating a new thread to ask, so having a very neat reply with steps and links should be very helpful

it was a long conversation with many replies via pm. the guides here are right.. it was just a matter of explaining the steps where he misunderstood, and following through with them instead of getting nervous and freaking. I did help by providing a few links, like to SuperSU 2.66, and virtually being there behind him, just for support. but really, he did it all himself. basically, I was a friend supporting another friend

I can try to type up a step-by-step since it is still pretty fresh in my mind.
I started with a fresh slate, stock 6.0.1 mmb29s ROM, and I already had the android sdk platform tools and adb installed and working properly. As long as you have all that going for you, you are in the same boat as I was and you can follow.
First, unlock the bootloader. I just followed the steps listed here: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=56938530&postcount=1
Then I flashed TWRP. I made a folder on my desktop called "Nexus6", and saved the TWRP .zip in it. I renamed it recovery.img to make it easier. Boot into fastboot, plug the phone in, and open a command prompt window. Then I typed:
fastboot flash recovery C:\xxxx\recovery.img (xxxx meaning the rest of the file path)
I used the volume rocker to boot into recovery to make sure it brought me to TWRP, which it did. TWRP asked me if I wanted to allow it to make modifications to the system or leave it read only. I wasn't sure, and after reading a bit and seeing both answers, I allowed it to make modifications, but when it asked me if I wanted it to install SuperSU, I denied that. I booted up regularly after that just to make sure everything was still working, which it was, so I booted into TWRP and made a backup at this point, in case something went wrong while rooting.
After the backup, I rebooted, and downloaded SuperSU v2.66 to my internal storage. Then I booted into TWRP, flashed the SuperSU .zip, followed the onscreen prompts, and rebooted the system when it was all done.
I already had RootChecker installed, and after all was said and done, I had root.
Like I said, I know just enough to be a danger to myself, and these are the steps that worked for me. Hopefully they work for you as well. I don't think I left anything out, and my biggest issue was figuring out how to make fastboot flash from a certain file path, which in hindsight really isn't tough.
So now I am on an unlocked, rooted stock 6.0.1 ROM.
just so that EVERYBODY knows, if you don't flash SuperSU yourself, then if twrp asks if you want it to install SuperSU, press no. it has a really old version, it won't give anybody root. and some won't be able to boot up after.
Could I replace the SuperSU apk inside TWRP after decompiling it with Anddroid Image Kitchen or would I have to rewrite some of the code too?
Edit: Just looked at it for my N7. Looks like there is a .sh file that I'd have to rewrite. I'm not comfortable with that.

Yup, me included sometimes to be honest. Sometimes its hard to keep the faith when users keep asking the same questions or discuss the same issues over and over again, thread after thread. There should be done more searching and reading by many users before posting something

Just curiosity!! But I looked at it after unpacking an image for my N7 I found the SuperSU folder and where to place the apk but it also has some files and I know off one now that I'd have to rewrite but I don't know what I'm doing so I'm not!! Again was just curious! Thought it'd be like with a rom.zip. Take out what you don't want add or replace as needed! Thanks!

No that's not what I meant. I don't know where the misunderstanding lays but I was talking about replacing the SuperSU. apk inside of TWRP with an updated one. Outside of flashing a zip I have no clue on how to manually root my device. I did look it up once and got nowhere so I wouldn't want to mess with or change SuperSU its perfection as is IMHO.

When I saw this I was curious as if it was possible to update the SuperSU. apk inside of TWRP with an updated one. I have Android Image Kitchen on my rig and thought I could unpack the TWRP.img with it and replace the outdated supersu.apk.
Both are truly out of my league so now my curiosity is settled.

That doesn`t mean its impossible, you could PM the TWRP devs and ask them to offer a TWRP version with the latest systemless root installed. The result would be the same

I see now that it is but its something I'm not comfortable with doing. Yes most definitely if it was a big concern of mine I'd do so but truly its not hard to hit " Do not Install" when exiting TRWP. I didn't know that the SuperSU.apk built into TWRP was outdated but I did know that it caused issues with systemless root. So in that aspect then maybe it should be addressed with the devs but I'm sure it's already in the works for they were probably more aware of the issue then I. That and I'm not the one to be like " hey dev when you gonna update". Thanks to you both though I do truly appreciate it. I just got curious.
