[Q] Ubuntu without vnc? 4s to s4 - Sprint Samsung Galaxy S 4 Q&A, Help & Troubleshoot

I have been researching for a while buy have not found quite what I'm looking for... I am planning to switch to android from my iPhone... I have owned a iPhone since they first came out. I have been doing a lot of research as of yet because I am eligible for and upgrade here in a week or two. I have decided on the galaxy s4. Amazing specs compared to my 4s!!! I plan on using the smart dock to connect to a monitor/keyboard at home and a Motorola 'lap dock' on the go (of course with a slight cable mod) as seen on tech crunches news article showing a raspberry pi as a 'laptop'. The most research I have been doing has been on software, I am going to run ubuntu 'along side' my android. There are apps I can use after I root the s4 like 'Debian kit' or 'complete Linux installer' but I am really wondering If there are any other options that I can do without using a vnc to 'connect' into the GUI? Like simply opening an app once everything is installed and running correctly. Or quite literally similar to the Ubuntu for android solution. Now I know that once I'm able to set everything up its not going to run like a super computer, nor do I really expect it to. I simply want to consolidate a lot of My computing.

[Q] Does Rooting break Development Environment?

Hello All,
I searched for related posts extensively and due to the words which describe my question, I was unsuccessful. If you know there is another post on this, please point me in that direction and I apologize for wasting bandwidth.... otherwise on to the question:
I've been developing apps for the last three months and my development environment (Eclipse, ADT, MotoDev Studio) on my desktop and laptop are working flawlessly. I actually had to spend a bit of time to get to this state, so I'm apprehensive about changing anything.
1. Will rooting my Moto Droid 1, Nook Color, Gtab, Etc. have an adverse effect on my development environment?
2. Can you envision ANY* problems related to app development post-root? *I'm looking for Emulator problems, PATH problems, Compile issues etc...
3. Any gotchas I should be aware of as a vanilla app developer?
I've read several rooting guides and I don't think I see any conflicts, but I don't know everything... I just try to ask the right questions. Thanks for your time.
I have this same question (except I'm on Droid Incredible).

As a developer myself I do not see / have any issues developing with a rooted device. I actually prefer using rooted devices as it is easier to debug in my opinion and much quicker to perform tasks. As for your IDE + ADB and other tools, they will not be affected unless you have VERY specific setups with your devices. I have never heard of any issues, so best of luck and if you have questions feel free to PM
Thanks for the reply...
On to rooting I guess ... worst case; I just bang my head on the wall for a few hours getting the environment back to where she likes my code.

[Q] New purchase tips & tricks

Hello,
I think this question could serve as a guide as well. I am sorry if a question along the same line has been asked, I searched the forum thoroughly to no avail.
Here is my question. I just bought an Atrix (my first ever smartphone) and I am relatively tech-savvy. I would like to know:
- What are the MUSTs for a new Atrix for getting the most out of the phone and optimizing performance, e.g., remove at&t apps, install this app, remove that app, etc..
- What are the SHOULDs ...
- What are the CANs ...
These, of course, are relatively subjective words, and I am sure varies from person to person, but I am willing to listen to anyone's comments.
For example, I have no idea if rooting is a must/should or a can, as I do not know the precise advantages since it's my first ever smartphone.
All your answers are appreciated. Thanks a lot.

Oh well, I used to flash the **** out of my old tilt 2... sleepless nights, sweat, almost bricked it couple of times. I don't have time for that anymore. That's why I choose Atrix over Inspire. I didn't even rooted yet. No need to tether here. Pretty much everything is on the market is enough for me. If you want a toy, or for hobby, I would return it and go for Inspire. If you stll want to keep it, then go to app and development section, you won't get bored.

Grats on ur new Atrix! If you kindly search or browse thru the Atrix section you will find all the sticky & the answer's that previous new owner's have also inquired on.
Give urself a fair amount of time to browse thru the exciting projects & accomplishments that ur fellow Atrix users have shared. I also learned this way and searching thru the threads was very educational.
Good luck & Happy hunting!

I would say that rooting is a must. Motoblur has some nice tricks, such as accessing the Manage Apps page directly from the menu button, but overall, you probably want to be able to freeze all the bloatware with Titanium Backup, and replace the launcher with Launcher Pro or Go Launcher Ex. It'll result in a much smoother running device. You'll probably notice right now that swiping through your home screens is somewhat choppy. This will fix that.
As was mentioned, check out the dev forum. I'm also a new Android user, and it was a lot of help!

[Q] Android to Playstation Relations...

Multiple Questions -
Would like a solution for all of them but will be researching on my own and posting updates about what I find as well. I want to begin by first asking you for your patience, and Thanking you for everything you guys do here at XDA. I sctually feel kinda cool, being a part of it. I cant wait to learn and master the world of Android and use it in my career field - Technology - IT
Also, trying to start a new discussion thread. (after my questions are closed out finished here, Id like to see it become a place where people come and are looking for a general place to look at cool ideas for your Android and PS3 and what you can do with them together. First, since I looked at all my questions and found sever closely worded scenarios that weren't what I wanted, You need a little background on me and the actual scenarios to get the full grip.
Okay, here it is. Ive been looking for a= for all the cool things I could do with my Android (Droid X2 - 2.3.5/Rooted- Eclipse 2.0.4) that involved my new PS3. I just got the PS3 and I was a hardcore Playstion fan since my early childhood. My first console as a matter of fact, was the PS1 with Gran Turismo 1. And while looking through the OS3's capabilities, I was Astounded... Yes you may like the Xbox 360 and I will give you that it is a very good gaming system that has many great and popular games (and you can play music saved on the local HD whilst you play {I havent quite gotten that done yet on the PS3 but I hope to.}) The Sony is much more.. You can do many interesting and by definition awesome things via Networking, Bluetooth, Internet, etc.. I recently graduated with my Assoc. in Networking and Im always thinking of all the things I need to make happen and what all will be required to preform, thus my occupation as a Network Admin (a beginner, but with excellent troubleshooting skills and quick learning). I hope to go back and BS in it as well and eventually master it (I want mo money) but while I am in my BS program, along with some other essential Cert's I will be needing, I want to completely and thouroughly learn the Android world and get a cert in it. I love the Android technology and capability.. :0 So, instead of reading forum after forum, like I usually do, Ive decided to join many of these forums and actually start, I figure you help me, I help you, we all get better. And, I'll be able to ask specific things, in my own words and have intelligent, Android users/devs to answer me and teach me (something Google cannot do.)
Now that you have a background on me (cause you may see me a lot), I must digress and get o with it. After Running through all the forums looking up ideas for my Droid X2 and how to use it to do a ton of cool things with my PS3, I will admit I had my heart set on a few specific things, but I found that there are a few threads about these kind of things and some are duplicate and there isn't a lot said.. Im opening this thread to get an answer to a few good questions of mine and then to leave it open for a discussion thread for anyone looking for the same kinda stuff one day so itll be all here, instead of way out in the cloud in bajillions of different places..
So, FIRST: I wanted to save a little money on a Playstation 3 remote (the one you use to wathc movies, like a T.V. remote) and use my android somehow via an app communicating with the Sony via bluetooth, network (since my phone is rooted and basically on the same Network as the Sony) anything. Is there anything like this out there? I am in the process of researching CM for the Droid X2 and Im learning about it, apparently the only app out there to do this with is Blueput droid I believe and its only $3 in the market but, Im an android/IT/hacker mod kinda guy, as long as its smooth stable and WORKS, and I believe that there is usually always a free way (on most things small like this esp) Blueput came out in beta for free but it only works for certain devices DX2 not being one of them, unless... You have CM7 any and all information about anything In my post would be saved and studied and used to learn with. So I can Own and be like you guys, a developer. So feel free to answer any and all of the trillion things you notice me wondering about and you happen to know or have an idea, I will work with you too} Now, I think CM7 will work on the Dx2 now, Ive been seeing so many people talk about how awesome it is, and that takes me to the second--
SECOND: Cyanogenmod {7} -- I have seen people raving about this, and from what I've gathered its a ROM with certain features. Can anyone tell me why this is so popular and whats so cool about it. Note: I'm also curious to any bugs or issues with the Dx2 as well.. Something good to know BEFORE you tackle a project. However, I thought I remember reading somewhere that there was a problem getting CM onto the x2 because of the Bootloader was locked {and still is according to what I read} I know that I may not seem like a computer idiot, I am capable and I can learn anything, but Im about to ask a stupid question, but I wont know til I ask so, will someone attach a link or something tell me in human words, what the boot loader actually is or does? My learning method was usually from the ground up and when I learn all the angles of something I can effectively troubleshoot or combine technollgies to make some cool capability, I should know what a damn bootloader is by now, but whatchya gonna do... *Face Palm
THIRD: Ok so this one is IMPORTANT -- I just got the PS3 and ofcourse I got Call of Duty Modern Warfare 3. {Black ops has that cool zombie level you play to pass time with friends or when you're baking up some good *greens the delicious way lol but it was $30 bucks already and MW3 was still 60 and more popular and IMO one of the best ever made to date, and thats considering all games in my lifetime, back to the 90's. So what I wanted to do is somehow use my phone as a head set for the Sony in MW3 so I could talk to the people {I can hear them when they talk and its pretty funny lol} Until just recently I didnt know that online play with the Sony was free.. *Face Palm again... So I immediately got on and started getting my own ass placed at my feet bu children..... I then found that you can hack the game, but I couldnt find any of the hacks online except one password protected rar folder that my rar password recovery program will take it 30 years to crack... smdh I would assume that linux has a method that is MUCH faster. Not that I want to cheat, just use on the campers. and other lobbies full of actual hackers that cheat.. My sole intention is to get very well off at the game and just do free for all. awaiting better stats..
When I looked into this one, I see no hope; but thats where the gurus can help. I know that the Sony and my x2 both use Bluetooth 2.0 but I did see something someone said that the Droid cannot be used as a mic There has to be a way. If not Bluetooth the over the Network or internet or something! Anyways, yeah, that was top priority when I thought of it.
Blueput Droid and CM7 I believe give me the ability to use my phone as a wireless mouse and keyboard, If so then awesome. I still want the DVD Player remote (like the tv remote) function.
I know that the headset or something like it, has to exist. I've even been as far as to say that if I used a remote desktop app (in Android it may be ssh or something, if Im right and remember it being, different and weird.) and when you are in control of said dev, you have access to the system, your external devices such as USM and even, the microphone {tada!} would be an input for the machine I was remoted into. Anyway, I also through the network out their (LAN) bc of DroidMote Beta and that with that capability out there, I know I can remote play my PS3 with a PSP and probably a Rooted android, if so, I can join the Dualshock3 controller to my phone, and then I can play it on my phone with the controller, and using the mic, and speakers and screen! and having said all of this.. A book for goodness sakes.. I may also just be crazy. and wrong, which I am not afraid to admit.
Now I know that this was EXTREMELY long winded, as Im sure you can tell that I took my medicine this morning lol this is one add man that is not hindered by the slow, sluggish effects of having ADD. So, excusing my massive post, I hope that I have started a very useful thread that will attract other posters in the future and will evolve into a PS3:Android discussion forum, saving oodles of people time when searching for this fantastic sorcery I hope I have helped and contributed, as I plan to do for all of you as I can.
Given the information above and the questions I had swarming around that I put on this post, could you help me with these? Thank you in advanced for all that spend their time on this. I appreciate all the work Ive seen you do in the years past and now Im here to help as well.
PS: Since you know I am not to new to forums, meaning that Ive read them ALOT and know how they work basically, I never actually participated (How weak of me; what a drain) So I may not have the method down quite right. I will remember to keep the post's smaller than this one and post in the right place. I am open and begging for any and all tips and information on the forum, Android, and the inquiries above. THANK YOU ALL SO MUCH!!

[Q] Android and Rooting NOOB questions

Hey everyone! Like the title says, I am new to rooting and Android devices. I was a BlackBerry loyalist for many years, and after that had a Nokia Lumia 900. After being disappointed by that, decided to switch to android. I'm 99% sure I will be picking up the GS4 on Sunday. My question for thos of you here that would know; when rooting, can I take apps/programs from other manufacture devices and put them on to my device? (ie: Htc Zoe and put on to S4. or S Health and put on the One)
Sorry in advance if this has been discussed before (i havent seen it) or if this is in the wrong location.

All android apps from the play store will transfer. SOME, but only some will transfer by manually install from the 'system' or Rom/Custom Rom, but it's sketchy at best. You can always try it..... Nandroid first though. Which we seem to not be able to do yet. And NONE move from blackberry to android as far as I know.

[CLOSED] Help with my first cellphone OS swap.

I am currently looking for an alternative OS or ROM on a phone. My big challenges are I have a great grand fathered in at&t data plan. I don't want to loose and There is no good phone that is both on their list and seems to give me the option to try different ROMS or OS's. That also fits my need for dual sim.
I truly believe if there is a place that linux could fit best it is on my private device. I don't mind windows for my Daily desktop but in the past few months I have watched the location data icon flash on the top of my phone despite having turned location data off. It would be nothing for google to truly allow us to make this choice on our own. An it always felt wrong to get a google phone hack it and then side load a ROM like copper or even lineage.
I haven't looked into Paranoid Android user yet. The real thing I keep bumping my head against as previously stated is compatibility with AT&T so I guess I am here to ask the following questions.
If I do a custom OS like Post Market OS, Sailfish, even Ubuntu touch. Will one screw with my AT&T plan while others don't. Its not like I am going to tell them Im switching the OS but I imagine there is something in there that allows them to throttle remotely and prevents tethering etc? perhaps one of the choices spoofs that better than others. What is the best ROM/OS for this? Crapy call by the courts on that one BTW when that decision was handed down years ago, and kudos to the absolute BOSS who went after AT&T. Funny thing is I am not even that big of a hot spot user. I have no problem with cafe wifi. It's not like I am doing banking there and I air gap that Laptop from my home wifi. The rare occasion that I have needed it was a recent business trip and even that wasn't allot of data. But I digress.
Second question I want to support the linux community that are building new OS's for existing devices as I think that work is really important for the fourth house privacy etc. I have been thinking about it and I think the best way to do it would be to hire a new developer to give a hand to an existing project for a few weeks. Fresh eyes and all that. Any recommendations on how to select one or from where?
It's not that there is anything wrong with ROM's but they all use AOSP and allot live hardware designed for there retail version android meaning they get at least a licensing fee for each one not to mention In-Q-Tell.
I am sure you figured out I am thinking about POST market OS on the 6T and that's why I am posting this here. I tried a post in a more general forum but crickets. Thanks for any help in advance.
@teljkon Thread moved from the development section, for which it didn't qualify, to Q&A but also closed as duplicate of
