Hey everyone! Like the title says, I am new to rooting and Android devices. I was a BlackBerry loyalist for many years, and after that had a Nokia Lumia 900. After being disappointed by that, decided to switch to android. I'm 99% sure I will be picking up the GS4 on Sunday. My question for thos of you here that would know; when rooting, can I take apps/programs from other manufacture devices and put them on to my device? (ie: Htc Zoe and put on to S4. or S Health and put on the One)
Sorry in advance if this has been discussed before (i havent seen it) or if this is in the wrong location.

All android apps from the play store will transfer. SOME, but only some will transfer by manually install from the 'system' or Rom/Custom Rom, but it's sketchy at best. You can always try it..... Nandroid first though. Which we seem to not be able to do yet. And NONE move from blackberry to android as far as I know.

So, after having my fix of Android, I've decided to move onto a Windows phone. Just to expierence something new. Hopefully picking up the AT&T HD7s tomorrow, any reviews on that to start out?
But as the topic states, have a few questions that wil most likely refer to android since ofcourse I'm more familiar with that.
First things first, is there a thing as such as rooting/jailbreaking a Windows phone?
What about roms?
Also, i've read a lot about the Mango update, do most phones have that now?
And finally, whats your favorite feature, and what are some good apps to have that the Android market doesnt really have.
I appreciate anyone who answers all of this. I'll toss a thanks because I am sure there are threads out there that answer all this, but it'd be nice to have a few collective thoughts all in once place.
Hey check where are you posting on!
Nor this is a general forum for windows mobile or windows phone or android. This forum is about Development and Hacking on Windows Mobile.
You're query seems to be related to windows phone so post in Windows Phone 7 General, WP7 Q&A or Forum General.
Mods, please move the thread and keep the forum clean.
Thanks...

Hi all,
I've got a GT-P6800.
Overall very happy with it, I would recommend it to anyone. I'm loving the battery life on it.
Just a couple of questions (I have read through a few threads to check);
Is it possible to move apps to SD card on Gt unrooted?
MOD Edit: Removed part of this.
What are your top 10 apps for the GT?:highfive:
I've read the rooting explained thread, but still don't think the benefits are worth the trouble for me. Although, updating to ICS would be nice!
Would I only be able to update to ICS if I'm rooted, or from the countries listed by Samsung or is there another way?
Also, throw in any other info that you think a GT owner should know.
Thanks, in advance for any replies!

XDA is not a place to obtain information about warez. You may notice this forum is called XDA Developers This forum represents a lot of hard working developers who rely on the income from there apps to create new ones! You asking to rip them off in such a open manner is a real slap in the face and also deprives us good paying users of more Apps. I suggest you read the rules before posting anything else. We support developers and dont steal there work!
I have been researching for a while buy have not found quite what I'm looking for... I am planning to switch to android from my iPhone... I have owned a iPhone since they first came out. I have been doing a lot of research as of yet because I am eligible for and upgrade here in a week or two. I have decided on the galaxy s4. Amazing specs compared to my 4s!!! I plan on using the smart dock to connect to a monitor/keyboard at home and a Motorola 'lap dock' on the go (of course with a slight cable mod) as seen on tech crunches news article showing a raspberry pi as a 'laptop'. The most research I have been doing has been on software, I am going to run ubuntu 'along side' my android. There are apps I can use after I root the s4 like 'Debian kit' or 'complete Linux installer' but I am really wondering If there are any other options that I can do without using a vnc to 'connect' into the GUI? Like simply opening an app once everything is installed and running correctly. Or quite literally similar to the Ubuntu for android solution. Now I know that once I'm able to set everything up its not going to run like a super computer, nor do I really expect it to. I simply want to consolidate a lot of My computing.

Does anyone know of a multi boot setup for the galaxy s4? I'm coming off a moto RAZR and I had safe strap on it which allowed me to partition the memory and install multiple ROMS... Just wondering if there was a similar program for the s4... Thanks.

same situation
Came from razr maxx and in same boat... Would like to have samsung rom for Remote features and one for battery saving
hint to devs that might be reading this...
Hopefully there is an awesome person WAY smarter than me working on that as we speak. I hated that phone but having safe strap was freekin awesome. I'm a flash-a-holic and being able to run 4 ROMS at the same time for comparisons was great... phone was garbage but that part was great...

I am currently looking for an alternative OS or ROM on a phone. My big challenges are I have a great grand fathered in at&t data plan. I don't want to loose and There is no good phone that is both on their list and seems to give me the option to try different ROMS or OS's. That also fits my need for dual sim.
I truly believe if there is a place that linux could fit best it is on my private device. I don't mind windows for my Daily desktop but in the past few months I have watched the location data icon flash on the top of my phone despite having turned location data off. It would be nothing for google to truly allow us to make this choice on our own. An it always felt wrong to get a google phone hack it and then side load a ROM like copper or even lineage.
I haven't looked into Paranoid Android user yet. The real thing I keep bumping my head against as previously stated is compatibility with AT&T so I guess I am here to ask the following questions.
If I do a custom OS like Post Market OS, Sailfish, even Ubuntu touch. Will one screw with my AT&T plan while others don't. Its not like I am going to tell them Im switching the OS but I imagine there is something in there that allows them to throttle remotely and prevents tethering etc? perhaps one of the choices spoofs that better than others. What is the best ROM/OS for this? Crapy call by the courts on that one BTW when that decision was handed down years ago, and kudos to the absolute BOSS who went after AT&T. Funny thing is I am not even that big of a hot spot user. I have no problem with cafe wifi. It's not like I am doing banking there and I air gap that Laptop from my home wifi. The rare occasion that I have needed it was a recent business trip and even that wasn't allot of data. But I digress.
Second question I want to support the linux community that are building new OS's for existing devices as I think that work is really important for the fourth house privacy etc. I have been thinking about it and I think the best way to do it would be to hire a new developer to give a hand to an existing project for a few weeks. Fresh eyes and all that. Any recommendations on how to select one or from where?
It's not that there is anything wrong with ROM's but they all use AOSP and allot live hardware designed for there retail version android meaning they get at least a licensing fee for each one not to mention In-Q-Tell.
I am sure you figured out I am thinking about POST market OS on the 6T and that's why I am posting this here. I tried a post in a more general forum but crickets. Thanks for any help in advance.
