Front metal rim around glass lens... - Galaxy S 4 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hey Guys, does anyone know where I can get a replacement for metal rim around the glass lens? I dropped the phone and dinged it at the bottom right corner, I was wondering if there is a replacement part for it I can buy somewhere.
Thanks
-Jack

Looks like you need more than the rim.

I know where to get glass, just need to know how to replace the rim

Probably have to buy the entire face plate. I would think eBay is your bet for now since the phone me is so new.

Not a chance. Unless you own highly specialised equipment and are highly proficient at changing the glass lens alone, you'll have to replace the entire glass plus display screen plus rim which is costly.
The samoled that Samsung uses has the glass "fused" onto the amoled display screen. This allows the entire screen+glass to become heaps thinner but unfortunately makes it close to impossible to replace the glass alone. Note, it's not impossible but close. Unless you're some sort of phone technician, it'll be impossible

Is S4 phone different from S3 when it comes to glass being fused? I see a lot of 'guides' on youtube on how to replace it, it takes some time, but doable.

Should be similar. However, it seems that the the S4's SAMOLED display breaks easily due to its size. There are reports of people saying that the display cracked underneath the glass.
I saw the guides before on how to separate the glass lens from the display using a heat gun etc etc but those require extreme skill and time.

Would the screen be covered by Samsung warranty? Since I top glass isn't damaged?

I have got scratches on Galaxy S2 screen!

Galaxy S2 has gorilla glass that cant be scratched (scratch resistant), I have kept my phone without screen protector but I use it very carefully, still it has got two scratches on the screen.
Furthermore, there are two spots on screen from where it seems like the alkali-aluminosilicate thin-sheet coating (Gorilla Glass coating) is vanishing.
Its terrible to see the device deteriorating so fast. I have had it for a week now.
Is someone else having such a problem?
contact the provider you bought it from or samsung themselves - be ware they may want to replace so if you have a custom rom be careful!
How many times does it have to be said?
Gorilla Glass SCRATCHES LIKE ANY OTHER GLASS. It is scratch-resistant, but not scratch-proof. Tougher than standard glass, but not impossible to break.
Samsung will do nothing for you about it.
Try to keep it away from sand, as it is the easiest way to get it to scratch.

You're right. Nevertheless, flashing back the respective original stock rom and using a JIG to reset the custom binary count hopefully will solve the warranty problem.
Its probably not the actual glass but the coating that sits on top.

Screen scratched and burnt pixel-can it be replaced?
Hey guys!!
Does anyone know if there is a way to get my galaxy s2 replaced? I have a scratch on the screen as well (and a big one that can be seen even with a screen protector) and one red pixel!! I currently have sent it for antenna repairs (sim was not recognized at all by this phone-not even pin was asked..)
So, is there a way I can demand a new one due to some guarantee reason? I have the stock rom and haven't tried to flash a new rom.... not yet at least
Thank you in advance! Hope someone helps me out!

True. Gorilla glass screens always has scratches but they are less visible than on the other screens. If you'll scratch your screen hardly, even gorilla glass won't handle it.
i have 2 after that started using screen protector but they were only visible in sun light now screen protector so many scratches but thankfully not on screen
Why you guys don't just use screen Protectors? The device's Screen will stay in Top-notch condition forever....
ahh i forgot: for sure, a good screen protector will cost you like 5 - 8 Euros but c'mon... the device is about 450 to 500, wich is much more expesive...
Why on earth do people start these type of threads if your unwilling to use a screen protector then you get scratches on the screen of your phone it's your own fault.
Jesus wept

Wait, it doesn't work that way?
I've got some deep scratches that I honestly can't account for. It has a dedicated pocket so no obvious reasons like keys or change.

I've got an idea. If you scratched your device... Corrupt your efs and then factory reset your device. Send the device for warranty repairs and they should replace it with a new device.

You guys gotta start realizing that a plain and simple grain of sand in your pocket is more than enough to destroy any gorilla whatever screen...be careful. Get a screen protector or stop complaining
lol. its scratch resistance. not scratch proof

I don't use a screen protector and I don't have any scratches on my screen (I've had the phone for about 5 months). Never used a screen protector on my HD2 either and the screen is still pristine... I don't know what you guys do with your phones

I would suspect something like sand grain in the pocket.
If its a jeans (with metal studs), you could scratch screen on the studs while moving phone in and out of the pocket.

Wow this phone can handle some serious pressure.

I think I have some issues but since I have gotten my first Android Phone (G1)
Around the first month I put some pressure on the screen whether it is pressing on the screen as hard as I can. Or putting a 7 pound weight on it.
Wow you can't even see the lcd being pressed on as the glass is pretty tough.

The HTC G1 used plastic over its screen which is quite malleable compared to glass or even Gorilla glass for that matter...used on the S2 and S3...which is why there was no pressure marks on the screen. Furthermore, its not LCD but AMOLED so I would assume that the pressure marks may differ to LCD should there be any excessive pressure applied. Best not to try as glass even though is very hard, it does crack with very little tolerance to flex.

Front glass cracked

Front glass of my nexus cracked. Fell from approx less than half feet from my track pant pockets
The LCD display is all working well I just can't stand the crack I take my phone out.
It's there any replacement for the glass other than the LG's LCD and digitizer assembly? only the front panel ? I meant only the glass

Ouch...did you just get the phone? I noticed the factory SP is still on. Your best bet is to just send it to LG for a repair. Doubt you will save much, if anything, from repairing it yourself. Parts are expensive and rare.

As far as I know that may not be possible, because unlike old lcd touch screens, where the glass cover and lcd assembly are separate units, the newer phones have them as almost single unit. This gives more effective touch control and cause the high price for display. You may have to change the whole display even though your digitizer may be intact.
it is so unfortunate that our marvel cant even take such a small fall:crying:
On the same subject, any trusty online stores what we can buy the display unit?

The glass and LCD are glued together. I doubt you can only replace the glass.

No.
I just ordered the rear cover to keep as a back up for my nexus 4 from http://www.etradesupply.com/lg/android-models/lg-nexus-4-e960-parts.html?limit=40 it looks like is the cover from newer nexus 4 without the glitter pattern but If I ever have an accident with the rear cover I'll have a replacement in hand so I can repair it quickly.
A cheapie $1 TPU cover from eBay would've prevented that. It's a damn shame to see something like this happen, especially when it was only a two-feet drop.
Were you rocking it naked or with a case?
Also, the glass and LCD are glued together so you won't get out of this situation without shelling over $100 at the very least and getting it fixed yourself.

Curved edge screen?

Honestly the S3 was so annoying with it's curved edges and trying to find a good screen protector with a good fit. I do not like wet application ones so I was stuck with dry apply ones that never covered the entire screen. So to anyone who may know are the edges of the screen curved?
they don't seem to be, from what I've seen. I've taken note of this too, i didn't care for the curved look. the s4 seems to be flat all the way across

Pretty much this.
On several hands on video you can see clearly that there's a metal trimming around the edges.

Yeah I saw that but the S3 also has a trim just not raised like that... And I haven't seen a picture with the perfect angle to say absolutely... Though now that I see Spigen has their Glas.T and Glas.TR posted im thinking that's a good sign
Sent from my GS3
On my sample, there is a very small gap (few mico-meters) between the metal ring (real metal this time) and the glass
Additionally, the glass does not cut, so it seems to have a round edge on a few micro-meter (not milli-meters, definively not like S3). It's all the same with HTC Desire for example, so you should not have any problem with glass protection.
My camera doesn't do good macro mode, so I can't show you properly, and as we have a month to go, mechanics might also change a little. But it's not like S3, you can go with screen protections.
I use to have this problem too. From all the videos and photos i trying to notise,S4 seems to be all the glass flat so we wont have this problem!

Don't use that! I used it on a Galaxy Nexus years ago and it rubbed away the oleophobic coating... How old is your Note?
Got it on day 1 oct 24. Its note 4. Been an amazing phone, thats why i care about a little scratch.
I also have a 2mm deep scratch and tried to polish it away!
DO NOT TRY THIS, AS YOU WOULD REMOVE THE COATING WHERE YOU POLISH!!!
This would make things even worse!!

it will help a little but you should just change the screen and then put on a phantom glass so you can prevent spending a lot of money on a hole new screen i've learned that mistake
I removed few scratches from my previous note but never from gorilla glass 4. What I did I masked area and wet sanded scratch out using very fine sand paper (1500, 2000, 3000) with final touch 5000 and polish whole screen using drimel with buffing pad and fine polishing compound. It is time consuming and results depending on your patience. Maybe put screen protector to minimize visibility of scratch and wait until replacement front glass became available - in my opinion is easier to replace glass than remove scratch.

Is it easy to replace myself?
It all depends on your patience. You will need LOCA glue and preferably uv light. Watch youtube videos how to do that and see if you be comfortable to do yourself. There shouldn't be much defference between note2, note3 and note4.
