Honestly the S3 was so annoying with it's curved edges and trying to find a good screen protector with a good fit. I do not like wet application ones so I was stuck with dry apply ones that never covered the entire screen. So to anyone who may know are the edges of the screen curved?
they don't seem to be, from what I've seen. I've taken note of this too, i didn't care for the curved look. the s4 seems to be flat all the way across

Pretty much this.
On several hands on video you can see clearly that there's a metal trimming around the edges.

Yeah I saw that but the S3 also has a trim just not raised like that... And I haven't seen a picture with the perfect angle to say absolutely... Though now that I see Spigen has their Glas.T and Glas.TR posted im thinking that's a good sign

On my sample, there is a very small gap (few mico-meters) between the metal ring (real metal this time) and the glass
Additionally, the glass does not cut, so it seems to have a round edge on a few micro-meter (not milli-meters, definively not like S3). It's all the same with HTC Desire for example, so you should not have any problem with glass protection.
My camera doesn't do good macro mode, so I can't show you properly, and as we have a month to go, mechanics might also change a little. But it's not like S3, you can go with screen protections.
I use to have this problem too. From all the videos and photos i trying to notise,S4 seems to be all the glass flat so we wont have this problem!

I don't know, but is the gap between the SLCD and the glass on top unusual? Could this be contributing to massive glare?
rule of thumb. the more layers, the more reflection, the more glare. its why samoled looks better in the sun since it has the digitizer implemented into the screen. while it lessens the layers and makes it thinner, it makes it a PITA to replace. as for a slight gap between the slcd and glass its not unusual though most manufacturer like samsung and apple for instance are switching to incorporating the two. as for massive glare, i doubt 2 layers would have that large of a effect.

idk. some users said it was glass. preform the infamous scratch test. lightly run razor blade across the screen. if it scratches, its plastic. if it doesn't its glass.

It looks better in the sun because it has an anti-glare coating on the glass. If you look at reflections in the Vibrant you'll notice that they are blue. Even a direct reflection of the sun. This is from the anti-glare coating.
I still have not seen anything conclusive, but I believe the G2's screen is plastic, so they were unable to put such a coating on it.

samsung disagrees(from the galaxy s faq):"The removal of the tradational air gap along with mDNIe (mobile Digital Natural Image engine) technology and upper glass layer offers greater visibility in bright light environments with reduced glare, free viewing angle, and faster response times."
http://ars.samsung.com/customer/usa...ID=2&PROD_SUB_ID=557&PROD_ID=560&AT_ID=290435
The Vibrants screen was definitely more responsive than my G2. My Vibrant would pick up even the lightest touches while my G2 does not. And I noticed the "gap" in the screen the day I got the phone. The Vibrant didn't have this.

Its glass. U can feel it when u tap it. I also tried keys and a razor blade! On the black part of course and nothing. No screen protector for me =) I did notice the glare but when I using the Tmo screen protector it blocks glare. Try them out if the glare is to much for u. Hope this helps! =)
fRom Snugs G2 ^.^
I think I even have some particles (dust?) between the layers on mine.
I never use screen protectors since owning a nexus one and then an htc hd2 spoiled me as well because that screen was just as good. But with the g2 I have it in a pocket by it self (no keys or change) and I have two scratches that are only vissible in direct sunlight.

The G2 screen feels cheap.
I don't like my screens to have that "give"
Could be worse you could have a pixel out on your brand new g2

Hey everyone,
I actually had a spec of something (only god knows what it was) behind the screen and I could see it clearly when the phone was not in use.
I just exchanged it cause it was obviously a factory defect. I think T-Mobile is usually fairly easy when it comes to exchanges (If they have phones in stock)

I don't use one and haven't needed one.
Maybe if you carry your phone in the same pocket as your keys, or like dialing with the point of a bayonet....otherwise I see no need.

okej thanks m8 do u have nay scratch?
This has been thoroughly discussed in the accessories section.
I have the Zagg Invisible Shield and i like it. You can't notice it on the screen exept if there is sun like a lot of sunlight on it, but you do feel like a bit of a plastic everytime you tuch the screen, i mean it is not that smooth to the feel, but the phone registers your touch every time with no problem.
I use one I got from bestskinsever.com (I think), its great. Takes a little getting used to the texture as you're obviously not touching bare glass anymore but it definitely does the job well, no discolouring or marks on my phone since using it
Why use a Display Shield when you have a Gorilla Glass onboard?
To be, or not to be: that is the question!
you don't need a screen shield
the glass is harder than the shields
i tried to scratch it with keys and it just can't be scratched
a firend of mine did it. and why not be on the safe side if you can?
havent used a screen protector since i bought the phone about 8 months ago
i havent got any visible scratch on the screen. not even under the sun
maybe when i use a microscope, then yes, but mmm.. im not going to
Had mine bare for 8 months as well and the screen still looks perfect, and trust me I'd notice any significant blemishes. Just the other day I wiped it clean and looked under bright light and could only see a couple of near-microscopic scratches.
A shield would ruin the feel IMO. I just keep out in its own pocket and hold it tight.

I prefer having one than not too... I had one so far and know that i removed i see i'd rather have one on for extra protection. After all Gorilla glass can be scratched too (although it's not easy to scratch it). I'm on the "better safe than sorry" side but for others who are very careful with the phone i would just suggest a case!
It is not neccesary for scratches but it may help to protect the screen from shattering when you drop it..

the force that is needed to scratch this glass would also scratch it past one of the screen shields
screen shields are useless for this phone, they just make it look uglier... and in some cases like zaag they also add a rubbery feel which ruins the smooth experience
I've had mine in my pocket with a hand full of screws an no scratch on the display

only if you drop a Hello Kitty cookie jar lid on it from 6" up in air. Friend did it and shattered the glass somehow. Hence forth he has a Hello Kitty skull/crossbones on his car window

to be honest it's unnecessary but for me it's annoying to wipe my screen everytime it gets dirty, and with a screen protector it doesn't smudge as easily
I took off my screen protector and now have a scratch. Its only visible if you switch off display and see the screen under a bright light. The back cover really needs some protection cause its a scratch magnet.
Gorilla Glass is resistant to everyday scratches, like from dust particles and carrying it in your pocket and things like that. No screen is resistant to high force impact.
I've had my Galaxy for over a month now and the display glass is still pristine (and I use it in differrent environments)! I had a Desire which was durable to some extent as well, but I managed to scratch its screen somehow. This phone? No problem whatsoever.
The plastic casing, however... the back cover has visible "signs" of usage
Strangely enough I have had some mixed experiences with gorilla glass.. My own galaxy GT-i9000 went 2 weeks and the screen was fine.. then i decided my fingers had grubbed it up a little too much.. took my cleaning cloth for my glasses and went to work only to find i had basically put hairline scratches over the whole screen.. Not terrible mind you but noticeable under bright lights or on low screen brightness..
On the other end of the scale I convinced a friend to get the galaxy s also.. Walking down a dirt road, he tripped while holding the phone and it slip maybe 5 meters down the dirt.. not a single scratch.. the plastic was a bit tarnished though from bouncing around.
have you guys notice small gap between the glass and the silver plastic rim around it,visible only on bright environment..
i've noticed this on the first day. My friend said he read something about this on other phones to. I'm guessing its because of it being glass. It is design to protect the screen so when you get a bump on side it will not break the gorilla glass. I think

Might be true, maybe its for design purposes, in mine its only noticeable on the top area, but when using the phone normally you will not notice it because of its black color..
It's generally used as a seal to keep dust from entering the phone.

Yeah i just noticed it on mine. Wonder if we should be worried about the screen popping out of the frame or something. The gap is more prominent on the right side of the screen when looking at it. Top and bottom has no gaps. Hmmm...
Mine looks like it has an equal amount of gab and some dust that settled in.
its made like that. like what someone said above, its to protect the edges of the glass from shattering.
The glass on mine is a bit off centre, cant see it unless looking right at it in light.

I had the same glitches. Down and on the left side of the screen. Got the screen replaced by Samsung. The frame and the screen is stuck together from the factory. Now it sits really tight.

I noticed a tiny little gap on the bottom most part of my screen and the frame. It's not very visible, but it seems to be collecting a little bit of dust.
I never noticed it before reading this thread.
Hey Guys, does anyone know where I can get a replacement for metal rim around the glass lens? I dropped the phone and dinged it at the bottom right corner, I was wondering if there is a replacement part for it I can buy somewhere.
Thanks

Probably have to buy the entire face plate. I would think eBay is your bet for now since the phone me is so new.

Not a chance. Unless you own highly specialised equipment and are highly proficient at changing the glass lens alone, you'll have to replace the entire glass plus display screen plus rim which is costly.
The samoled that Samsung uses has the glass "fused" onto the amoled display screen. This allows the entire screen+glass to become heaps thinner but unfortunately makes it close to impossible to replace the glass alone. Note, it's not impossible but close. Unless you're some sort of phone technician, it'll be impossible

Is S4 phone different from S3 when it comes to glass being fused? I see a lot of 'guides' on youtube on how to replace it, it takes some time, but doable.

Should be similar. However, it seems that the the S4's SAMOLED display breaks easily due to its size. There are reports of people saying that the display cracked underneath the glass.
I saw the guides before on how to separate the glass lens from the display using a heat gun etc etc but those require extreme skill and time.

I'm wondering how many of you have gotten a screen protector, and/or if it's even necessary with the gorilla glass 3??
I know I probably should, but this damn display is SO smooth, it's like sex for my fingertips. lol I almost can't bring myself to cover it and deal with the resulting plasticky feel of said screen protector.
Seriously I never felt a screen so smooth... I'm coming from a gnex, and I'm not sure what type of display that was, but it was not even close to this smooth.
I'm just paranoid because on day TWO of buying my gnex a few years ago, the display got scratched. I remember being in a restaurant and putting the phone down - display side down. I went to pick it up and saw a centimeter sized scratch. It was only slightly noticeable with the display on, but I had to deal with that crap for two years. Unreal.

It certainly is. Gorilla Glass is NOT scratch proof. Sand (which is all around you) will scratch it.
If you can spend £30 to protect the screen, why wouldn't you? It'll help the resale value and a screen protector is much cheaper to replace than a new screen!
I didn't like to use them too and that is why my note 2 have small scratches on the edges. I bought a pack of tech armor and went through 3 protectors just trying to put them on. I also hate the feel of them.
With the note 3, I decided to get this instead of the tech armor:

I was able to get the first one on perfect and am very satisfied with it. I don't want this one scratch yet.

That's still plastic though right? I don't want to give up the wonderful feel of the glass.
I've been doing some reading around the forum and came across a thread recommending the Spigen glas.t protector (glas.tr is even thinner and better). It's a thin layer of actual glass, and apparently it feels just as smooth as the display itself. It's pretty pricy but I'm def getting that one.
Hi there, I'm not a screen protector fans also, it's never have any screen protector from my iPhone 3g until this new note 3. I had ordered a spigen gals.tR through thier web site. It's a real temper glass. I just love it. It's kinda thick compare to others market screen protector and a bit on high budget. Once I put it on (installation was damm easy). You will notice it's very thick, but it's not affect any of my sensitivity nor the screen color. It's remain smooth and sharp. I had ordered along a cover from spigen as well. The Neo Hybrid. Yes, your note 3 is not very big and a bit more heavy. But it's fit beautifully on nite 3.
P.s. I'm just sharing. No commercial involve.
