Hi!
A few weeks ago my Nexus 4 fell down and the front display cracked right under the camera.
At first there was no problem and the crack wasnt disturbing. But since last week my microphone doesnt work properly anymore.
It doesnt work in several apps (Skype, Teamspeak, Google Voice Search) and also not when Im trying to make a phone call.
I can only take a phone call when Im turning the call into the "speaker mode". So then the caller hears me but everyone around me hears my call..
The support says that it isnt a warranty case because I let it fall down. But I cant imagine that the microphone is defect 1 month after it fell down.
Also I think that the german support engineers are not the best educated ones because they have so many devices to analyse.
Do you have any ideas?

The mic probably got misplaced from the pins when you dropped your phone. You have to open the phone and place it in the right place

The mic is broken so you can't talk. Nexus 4 has 2 microphones and maybe the 2nd one works on speaker mode
As denpei above said here, the other mic will probably function when you're in speaker mode.
In that case your phone has to filter out the voice of the one who's calling you from the speaker, since its a noise cancellation mic.
There's no defect. You dropped your phone and you broke your screen and the mic. Duh, put two and two together. :good:

Yeah in Speaker mode i can call normally like i said above.
Is there a tutorial how to replace the microphone? I only find some teardown videos
EDIT
Ok i found a video where it is shown where the main mic is. And i found a way to replace it if its really broken.
Thanks

Hy guys.
I bought this nice HTC Magician and it has a little problem. Speaker at the back of case works very well( I can play music and all), but the small speaker at the front panel( above the screen) for answering the calls doesn't work... You can't hear anything...
When I turn ON Speaker(back side) I can hear the caller, but and everyone around me....
And I can also normaly use it when headset is on...
In the mobile service they said that they have changed front speaker and that problem is somewhere on the motherboard...
Is there any salvation for this...

Assuming the service centre have changed the speaker for a good one, and they have cleaned the contacts on the motherboard, then they are most likely correct that it is a motherboard fault. Quite an unusual fault as normally earpiece speaker problems are either poor contact with the board or a faulty earpiece speaker.
If it is the motherboard, then a repair is not economic and could turn out to be impossible in some cases. Clearly the sound circuit is OK in as much as you get output using an earpiece. However, there could be an amplifier fault or a simple crack in the board connections. Without testing there is no way to know.
You could dismantle and check the connections (often the speaker has springy contacts that touch onto the motherboard). You can tweak them out a little and claen the motherboard contacts. BUT, if you trust the service centre then it would be a faint hope. If you don't trust the service centre (sometimes they give excuses because the job would take too much time for the amount they can charge - particularly on older devices), then you could dismantle (Always risky - unless you are familiar with this kind of thing - it could end up worse than when you start!!)
Mike
Mike, thank you very much...
I supposed that they probably didn't check everything as they should. Because hey're not officialy service or even to have experince with this devices. When servicer saw Magician he said " Oh this is complicated"... That's why I think that they even don't know how to fix the speaker or that they have put ther right one speaker. I didn't want to give them device to testing because I saw that they don't have experince as I said.
So I'm taking it, nesxt week, to service where I know that people are professionals...
I'll give feedback what i've done..
I have had my nexus for about a month now and a little while back started having problems with the microphone. People on the other end will say I sound like I am in a "tunnel" or "distant". Seems to get worse during long conversations. Sometimes I can hold a 20 minute conversation and not have one problem other times it gets so bad that they cant even hear me.
I have really good reception and 3g at my house. I called T-mobile to see if it could be something with their network and they said probably not since they had only noticed problems in Texas and some other random state (I live in BK,NY) . Called HTC and they were no help at all (said I should try and reboot my phone thats all they could think of). Called google and they said I sounded just fine. As I said before It doesn't happen during every single call, but I have had about 3 different people tell me the same thing...
Anyways, the bootloader is unlocked so I can't send it in to get it replaced or even have it looked at with out paying an arm and a leg.
Anyone Have any ideas? Anyone? Bueler? Bueler?
Thanks.
Ok this is just a random thought as I have had a similar experience, but only when I hold said phone with my shoulder. Are we perhaps doing something to the noise cancelling mic? Would covering it make a difference during a conversation? Something to do with the proximity sensor? i am just thinking out loud.
I dont think its the proximity sensor because I put tape on it keeping the screen off and it was still doing it. as for covering the mic on the other side I don't know. I guess i could cover it for a while and see what happens. I'm going to send it to HTC and see what they say. Hopefully its a hardware issue that they can fix for nothing.
First 1,gps needs around 10 mins in clear sky to lock my position , with gps fix(from the market) it takes 5-20 seconds.
Second and most important, all the people that i talk with cant hear my voice clear,i hear them clear tho, there is a really low pitch sound in the background when noone talking even on the road with full bars,i tryed 2g and 3g networks, i even tryed calling my phone from someone else phone and i couldnt hear his voice clear, when i used the headphones my callers heard my voice crystal clear.
I am thinking of taking my phone for replacement in the next 3 houers so i really apriceate any fast feedback especially for the second problem.
GPS fix is usually very quick on my X5 with data connection on, usually under 30 sec.
I've had one or two instances where a geocaching app wouldn't get a fix in 5 or 10 min. A reboot solved that every time.
As for the sound problem: sounds like your microphone is defect. No such problem on my phone...
1. You need to enable gps xtra for faster lock, in the same menu where you enable gps.
2. Some say that B160 rom creatly improves call quality, id try that from. Look from the dev section.
so gps is normal but microphone defective?
anyway,i got it back at the shop for a replacement i ll have a new in 4-5 days ,but im a bit woried if it will be defective again as there are some known problems like gps, wifi, light bleeding, burned pixels, flash player random reboots and i think i ve got 60-70% chance of geting a working one
I have a similar problem...
When people call me they tell me that my voice is very low. This changes when i hold the phone in front of my face, then it becomes better. But it is only good when I switch to the loudspeaker mode. Then you hear my voice clearly. Is it possible that this phone has a certain voice activation level and that this is set too critical?
And if it is so, can I set this threshold value anywhere?
edit: And can I edit the volume of the microphone itself too?
I find that if I have the phone tucked between my ear and shoulder (like you do when you are using both hands for something but still want to talk on the phone), noone can hear me at all.
But if using it "normally" (ie: by holding it to my ear with my hand) it works fine.
Does this device have a noise cancelling mic that is affecting things when the entire back panel is covered or something?
i have the same mic problem... i sent it for replacement...

True about GPS, just need to enable the option sanpsa said.
Mic, never had a problem so far.. touch wood.
Notwithstanding the fact that flipmodegr's microphone was obviously faulty, something to consider when others say they're having difficulty hearing you is the noise-cancellation microphone.
I suspect that those who're having problems might be covering or scraping the second microphone hole, or have a cover of some sort over it.
I haven't encountered the problem at all, but I'd be interested in knowing if those of you who have (outbound) audio problems are using any sort of cover on the 'phone while you're actually using it.

I'm pretty sure it's not a noise cancelling mic. It's just a directional mic for use when recording video.

Google search mentions a noise cancellation microphone exists.

I unfortunately don't have the option for xtra GPS - I only see Use GPS Satellites, and beneath that is GPS Source (which gives me only one option - Use internal GPS)
I am on Gingerbread - CyanogenMod 7.2.0.
Can you or someone else suggest a way to get around this problem? I am trying geocaching and the lack of GPS fix is really frustrating!
for me the GPS fast fix was only solved with replacing the gps.conf file, with this one

Excuse my ignorance but where do I need to change this? Or can you direct me to the right thread with the instructions?
I don't talk a lot on the phone, so it's taken a couple months to find out this issue.... When I'm talking to someone on the phone, I have to hold the phone pressed up against my face and speak a little louder than I normally do.. If I pull it away any at all, people are always saying they can't hear me or I sound really muffled.
I just called my voice mail and left a message, and this is what I've discovered as well. I knew what I said, but had problems understanding myself unless I held it right up to my face and spoke slightly louder than I've had to do with any other phone.
I heard, back in December, this was an issue and was to be fixed on the next update.... I'm now on a M29P (January release) ROM and nothing has changed.
Has anyone found this to be an issue or have you found a work around/fix for this?
I have the same issue.
When I put the phone in my neck so I have my hands free, people tell me I'm very hard to hear, and it's perfect when I hold it in a normal position...
It's quite frustrating, as I sometimes need to have my hands free..
Same here

Same happen here, it's because the noise reduction micro that the nexus 6p has back, check the small hole on the back face of the phone, when you are in a call put your finger there and they will say the same "I cannot hear you well", there are tweaks on the forums, but I have not tested yet, I used to use the speakers instead
If the phone is like 6 inches away they cant hear me, it's a noise cancelling issue, too strict.
Change in build.prop from true to disable noise cancelling.
persist.audio.fluence.voicecall=false
I had this with the very first call I made, but haven't had that complaint since

do this. fixed mine and my mothers problem with calls being muffled
I can't fathom how this is still an issue. I get constant, i mean CONSTANT echo. People stating they hear themselves when they talk to me. I finally downloaded build prop editor as instructed here and edited persist.audio.fluence.voicecall=false as shown here. I have yet to test but it can't possibly get worse than EVERY DAMN CALL not working. Seriously , this is a phone, the tech for calls was perfected only a decade or more ago ?

Do you have any issues when in busy areas like restaurants, bars, airports etc?
the issue is still persist even after the June OTA. is there any way we can contact Google or Huawei to fix this issue permanently ?
I really love the phone but this issue is frustrating as it is a basic need in any phone. phone calls must be ok. how it can be fixed without root.
Have the issue here too even after June update. Will be rooting to edit build prop to see if it helps since I'm not sure I'll get much of any help from Huawei's support.

Hi all, my gm 5 plus seems to have a pretty low in call volume. i need to be in a quiet place to be able to hear the person on the other end of the line. anyone else have this problem?
i have the same problem
eny ideas ?
I also have the same problem. The volume of the phone is very low., I almost don't hear the other person when calling. I need to put it to speaker to hear it decently. Any possible solution for this issue?
I'm ok with the volume, it's just that sometimes my voice gets interrupted at all, and the other person seems not to hear me. Haven't been able to find a way to fix it yet.

i had same problem after 7-8 months from buying. i went to the guarantee service and they made it without any fee. they said it was because of dust but i don't believe them. just go to the service, they will fix it.

i had mine send in for repair, because it fell, causing some dents in the metal frame. they replaced it for free, it was louder, but still too low. my huawei p9 lite and now my iphone are so loud i can almost use the earpiece as the speaker.
Speaker was dirty inside in my gm5plus, telpa service cleaned it up, now I can hear when call someone. (Or you can use a needle, but BE CAREFUL)
