need help reverting to stock - Nexus 4 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

hey guys, i just recently converted to an n4 and was messin around with it. i tried to revert back to stock using fastboot (stuck at x boot animation) and the nexus toolkit (stuck at "writing system"). i'm not sure what other methods there are but can anybody offer some insight as to why this may be happening?? thanks in advance

Forget toolkits. They can cause as many problems as they fix. Look for the revert to stock thread on here. It's good!
Basically you need to download the stock image from google then tag the enclosed text file that tells you which commands to run. Our just run the sh/bat file in the zip file.

I used WUG's tookit to unlock and root, but I don't completely understand how to copy the stock image to my N7 and flash it.
All I have access to is the fastboot mode on the N7
Any help will be good. I really want my N7 back.
Thanks.
Try this: http://forums.androidcentral.com/go...ide-factory-image-restore-your-nexus-7-a.html
It is easy. Just click flash to stock + unroot check device can't boot (use recovery to turn your nexus off) then follow directions. It will flash for you
It will either download the image for you or you can choose an image you already have

New Nexus 7 User needing Unlocking/Root advice

Hey XDA
Iv had my Nexus 7 for a day now and am dying to root and mabe install CM10
i currently have a Samsung Galaxy S3 with CM10 on it...thot its extremly buggy sadly... anyways i have been looking up on how to root the nexus 7 but i need to know if i can instead of using toolkit can i instead just use odin to flash stock rom and cwm and so on instead of having to unlock the device?
i am used to using odin for flashing and cwm but here the nexus is close to the same with htc one x in the way it has that fastboot thing and from what iv heard the nexus 7 requires unlock before it can be rooted, also is the tookit the best way to unlock and root the device?
also does unlocking break the warrenty and if i ever decide to return to stock unroot how do i flash stock rom back onto the device? am not sure where i would find the stock roms for it and also can odin be used to flash it...:S
i hate sounding like a noob lol
ok iv used the toolkit 2.0 and its worked great so far...im stuck at not being able to boot into cwm recovery
it installed fine thru the toolkit but whenever i try to hold up and power i cant get it to boot into cwm recovery...
i tryed to reinstall again but still cant get it to boot into cwm am i doing something wrong?
Doing the following won't cause you to loose warranty:
- Unlocking the bootloader
- Rooting
- Flashing custom ROM's and Kernels (however, if you flash a custom kernel that causes your device to explode... I'm somewhat certain this won't be covered)
However, if you are doing anything like that, and have to send the device in for warranty, you "should" factory restore it. Google provides Factory Images for the Nexus 7, which can be restored to your device with semi-ease.
I use this guide to factory restore: http://forums.androidcentral.com/ne...ide-factory-image-restore-your-nexus-7-a.html Some filenames might need changed though since I think that guide is based off an older factory image (instructions are the same though).
There is a good chance a toolkit also has an easy method for factory restoring, but I don't recommend this at all.
Stop using toolkits.

I've never used a toolkit before (until this issue had me stuck). I'm unable to get the Nexus 7 to book into recovery (CWM) after flashing it via fastboot. After giving up, I rooted it using the toolkit.. scariest thing I've ever done.. it did work.. but I'd like to get to the bottom of why a number of people like me seem to be having issues flashing and booting CWM on the Nexus 7.
Did you rename the original system/recovery to .bak first?

No, I flashed it as I normally do.. using the .img file. In this case, CWM.. recovery-clockwork-6.0.1.0-grouper.img
Why would renaming it to .bak be needed?

I had to rename the stock recovery under system to .bak before I could get twrp to work. Or else when I went into recovery it would get stuck on the android.
But I see you are using fast boot it should write over it.

I didn't have to. Flashed twrp and forgot to put a ROM on it and went back into recovery and it was twrp still.

Quick 411 regarding 4.1.2

OK, by no means am I new to this stuff but since I mainly creep around in the evo lte forums I've been out of the loop regarding the 4.1.2 updates here. I've been looking around trying to grab bits and pieces of info and noticed there is a new bootloader but there was confusion regarding how to update it. So here's what I have to know:
1. What is the best way to go about updating the boot loader? Relock and update via ota and then re unlock and whatnot or is there a way to push the boot loader via fast boot or placing a file on the internal storage like the evo.
2. Is the nexus toolkit updated to handle the unlocking and rooting of the new update or do I have to use terminal commands, not a problem if I have to.
3. Did the update finally fix the issue of getting into recovery without being connected to a computer?
Thanks in advance to anyone who takes the time to fill me in

Anyone?

1. I can't find the original link, but I attached a flashable ZIP that will update the bootloader from recovery. You can also push this IMG file through fastboot to update it to the latest one.
2. Yes, the Nexus 7 Toolkit was updated to be able to handle rooting and unlocking of the latest update.
3. Yes, the update allows you to boot into recovery from bootloader now.
Hope this helps you!
thanks for the info i found a link to the new 3.41 bootloader on googles dev site so im just gonna fastboot flash it. and thank god they fixed that recovery issue finally haha :good:

Then I guess you don't have to lock it first and unlock it later, right?

Flashing factory KitKat question.

Hi I have just bought my Nexus 4 and was thinking of flashing the factory release. If anyone could point me in the direction of a Nexus n00b guide I would be grateful.
I have rooted and flashed ROMs on my previous android phones but only using Odin to root and then flashing ROMs from the custom recovery and ext SD card. I assume that the Nexus has a different method of flashing files.
Thanks in advance.

With Nexus devices you use fastboot to flash factory images.
Use the guide link in my signature or this one from Android Central which is really good.
Also download the Minimal ADB/Fastboot and Universal Naked Driver packages. Make sure to connect your Nexus while in USB Debugging and get the driver installed correctly first. If you are using Windows 8 you need to reboot in Advanced startup mode and disable driver signature before installing.
Flashing stock images guide. http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2010312
Rooting guide. http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2018179
Also there are a lot of toolkits in original dev section to help you but I won't recommend it as I believe you need to first know how to use ADB. Lastly, if you would just search before making a thread like this...it would be great.

I had never flashed my phone before; never even rooted it but flashing 4.4 wasn't that hard once I got the drivers figured out and the SDK manager installed I used these commands:
adb reboot bootloader
fastboot flash bootloader bootloader-mako-makoz20i.img
fastboot reboot-bootloader
fastboot flash radio radio-mako-m9615a-cefwmazm-2.0.1700.84.img
fastboot reboot-bootloader
fastboot -w update image-occam-krt16o.zip
fastboot reboot-bootloader
Good luck!
try this aswell http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2531374

Man simply root your phone and flash a stock kitkat rom.... All of 10 minutes, some people have been having bootloops with images and since your a novice that would be your best bet to getting kit kat. Not that images are bad or the wrong way to go but too me a person like you its easier and better off rooting and flashing stock.
Bootloader and radio not necessary unless you want too
Thanks to all. Got round to flashing the factory image yesterday after reading the links. All went OK noe running kitkat and nova beta launcher.

[Q] JWR66V Nexus 4 4.3 Stock Kernel?

I have a Nexus 4, 4.3 JWR66V , Stock ROM and on Franco's Kernel currently and am looking to OTA update to later builds and eventually KitKat.
I've got the OTA requests on my phone and am trying to return to STOCK (following Efrant's guide and other threads) so I can apply them. But I can't find a stock Kernel for JWR66V? There is one for JWR66Y which I understand should work, however when I load it to Boot (using WugFresh Nexus Toolkit) my phone does not switch on fully (blank screen).
Can you please point me in the direction of a JWR66V stock kernel that will work or help me figure out what I'm doing wrong?
Thanks!:good:

Thanks mate - again I'm struggling to find the Nexus factory images for JWR66V - I can only seem them for JWR66Y and this boot.img didn't work for me.
Flash the JWR66Y images... system, boot, recovery, radio, and bootloader. As long as you don't flash the userdata.img, your data won't get wiped.

Ok thanks mate...going to try that right now and report back.
Are you (or anyone else) familiar with the Wug Fresh Nexus Root Toolkit? Is the Boot/Flash image utility in this a good way to flash images? The Boot image option lets you preview the .img and then reverts back to the old one upon reboot - sounds good to me but anything I should check/be wary of when using this?

I have used Wug's toolkit in the past, however it bootlooped my device. I'm sure it was user error, but anyway decided to learn adb and fastboot. Long story short... no I'm not familiar with the toolkit, even though I used it once before. Any luck with flashing the images?

have flashed all of those files using adb fastboot - still says my kernel is the franco one though?!
i noticed after i flashed all of those files (the boot one being the last) that it rebooted with a blank screen. i then have to switch off, switch on, it turns on as normal but shows the kernel is still the same in settings.
just to check i am doing this right - i put the phone in fastboot mode and through a cmd prompt, flash each img one at a time. is there a way to flash them all at once? i suspect not all of them are flashing...
You can flash the "flashall.bat", that will flash all of the images in one command. That's strange that flashing the boot.img doesn't overwrite the franco kernel. Perhaps try to "fastboot reboot-bootloader" between each .img.
Hmm
Ok I managed to flash all the files now...bootloader radio boot recovery and system - but my phone is not switching on. It get's stuck at the Nexus X logo and doesn't go beyond that!
Any ideas please?
Update - just went in to the stock recovery and wiped cache too....seem to be stuck on the X but it says "Android is Upgrading too"....hopefully this will work now!
Good news - it all worked! Clearing the cache did the trick and I have now OTA'd all the way to 4.4.2!
Thanks for your help mate and everyone else :good::laugh:
