[Q] Nexus 4 Bricked?

Hi all,
I'm freaking out here. I was trying to install a kernel on my N4 using the Toolkit and somehow it said it was done successfully but then my phone got stuck on the Google screen and was never able to start up again.
I do have a Nandroid back up but unfortunately it's on my computer and not on my phone.
I tried using the toolkit AND adb to push the files to my phone but I get the same message: "failed to copy to sdcard: No such file or directory".
I'm completely stuck now and am panicking. Somebody please help!

And this is why we don't use toolkits.
Read up on how to use fastboot and how to boot into fastboot.
Then read up on where to find stock images and how to flash them in fastboot. Then do it.

Why would you use a toolkit to flash a kernel ...just download zip go to recovery cwm or twrp and flash...
Can you get into fast boot ??

Might also be helpful if you specified which kernel you flashed. As long as you didn't flash a kernel for a different device (e.g. nexus 7) you can definitely recover. To reiterate what others have mentioned, fastboot is your friend. There are numerous tutorials on his to install and use it. Check the stickies.

Yeah I can get into fast boot and even into CWM. I tried factory resetting in CWM but it still gets stuck on the Google screen.
The reason I used the toolkit and not CWM to flash the kernel is because CWM kept failing to flash the kernel, giving me some error and "(bad)" message. It is the kernel to improve Nexus 4 sensitivity directly from another thread.
Can someone please provide me with specific links or detailed instructions?

My main problem is I need to get my Nandroid backup onto my phone. For some reason, because it's stuck on the Google screen, it's not able to write to the sdcard. Can someone please help me get my files from my computer to my phone?

Flash stock first.

Thanks for your help. I've successfully follows the instructions and got back to Android 4.2.2.
I still want to restore my previous Nandroid though. Although I have placed it in the Clockworkmod backup folder, it's not being seen by CWM recovery. I tried backing up a new nandroid just to test and CWM sees the one it backs up.
Anyone know how I can get CWM to recognize the Nandroid which was done through the toolkit?

If the kernel wasn't installing in the first place you probably shouldn't of flashed it via toolkit

Yeah I realize that now. But any idea how to get CWM to recognize my Nandroid that I did with the toolkit? Anyone?

There isn't really anything wrong with a toolkit for certain things, I just think it's a bit strange he tried to use it for something as trivial as this.

Ok well to solve the problem I did download the stock images and flash them according to Effrants guide:

Then the reason that CWM wasn't recognizing my Nandroids was because I had them in /sdcard/clockworkmod/backups, but they should be in /data/media/clockworkmod/backup.
I recovered everything and I'm back! Thanks for your help everyone.

Stock Recovery

I flashed TWRP to make backups and am finding I want to revert to stock recovery for whenever the next OTA is pushed. I'm on stock 4.2.2. Is there a repository to flash the stock recovery specific to the version of android I'm on or other way to backup/re-flash stock android prior to installing custom recovery?

The stock Android recovery cannot make entire system (NANDROID) backups like TWRP or CWMR can. If your looking to re-install stock Android 4.2.2 for the Nexus 10 you can download and flash the Nexus 10 factory image from here (I would recommend taking a look at this great guide if your are unfamiliar with how to flash factory images). If you just want to reflash the Nexus 10 stock recovery you can download it from here, boot into fastboot mode and then flash it with the following command:

fastboot flash recovery path/to/recovery-stock-manta.img
After it completes you can reboot into recovery mode and you should now have the stock Nexus 10 recovery image installed. For flashing the stock recovery you should try and match it to the Android version so if your on Android 4.2.2 try and flash the recovery.img that was pulled from the Android 4.2.2 factory image. However usually you can get away with flashing 4.2 or 4.2.1 version of the stock recovery.img as it is unlikely that anything major changed with the stock recovery image in those small incremental Android updates.

Is there a repo or other way to make a backup of stock recovery before flashing custom (TWRP/CWMR). If I'm on the go and want to interchange between custom recovery and previous stock recovery without the aid of a computer nearby, how would I do that? Is there an app that can save/snapshot my current stock recovery before flashing custom recovery (and then can later let me re-flash that saved recovery)?

Flashing stock recovery wont make me lose any data will it? because 4.3 was released for s4 google edition so im sure nexus 10 is close and i want to be ready.

Correct flashing stock recovery won't make you loose any data. But as always when your flashing anything and if you have even the slightest hesitation backup any data you wouldn't want to loose.

Alright thanks man. I already used my 8 for today but ill thank you tomorrow and ill back up my apps with titanium backup

OK what is the command to use to flash because the one from the previous page didn't work it said something about not finding it or something are there any drivers that need to be installed or something I'm missing? I connected it to my CPU and turned it on while holding power and volume and it went menu where you see tablet info? Any help please

Don't know if you still need this info, but you can use flash_image to flash recoveries without having to connect to a PC. So if you save the recovery image files, you can switch easily. Have a look here:

I haven't done this on my N10, but I've used the method several times on my HTC Vivid phone.

The IMG file is not found or flash_image itself isn't there? If you don't have flash_image, you can download it (I think there's a link on that page I referenced, or just Google it). If the former, you need to first navigate to the folder flash_image is in (/system/bin with the ROM I have on my N10), then run the command, making sure the IMG file is in the root of /sdcard.

[Q] Going back to stock

Hi,
I'm on paranoid android 3.69 and I'll probably upgrade to the N5. So my N4 is most likely going to my parents. I was wondering how to go back to stock. When I check for a system update it says 4.3 is available. Would that be the way to go or do I need to download the stock rom and flash?

Best and easiest way to return to stock, in my opinion, is to simply download the factory image for 4.3 for Mako. Extract the factory image and load your phone into fastboot mode. Afterwards, open a command window in the extracted folder to flash each .IMG.

If flashing the factory images in fastboot have you worried just use one of the toolkits

[Q] Stock Recovery

Why can't I seem to find the stock recovery .img file for this device? I have searched hi and low. Can anyone help a brother out?

You don't specify which Nexus 7 (2012) model you have... the WiFi only model, or the WiFi & 3G model.
Reason being, is I always keep a copy of the stock recovery close to hand... but it's extracted from the factory image intended for the WiFi only model... and I'm not sure it would work correctly if flashed on a WiFi & 3G Nexus 7.
Anyway, here is my copy of the stock recovery from Jellybean 4.3 (build JWR66Y) for the WiFi only Nexus 7.

Download to your PC, and unzip the recovery. img file inside.
Fastboot flash it with fastboot flash recovery recovery.img.
As I've said... this stock recovery was extracted from the Jellybean 4.3 factory image designed for the WiFi only Nexus 7... so if you have the WiFi & 3G model, I would suggest you download the Jellybean 4.3 factory image for your device, as advised by Erovia, and extract the stock recovery accordingly.

That's exactly what that is. It will not factory reset your device. Just be sure you are using it on the right Nexus 7 and version as mentioned.

Going from 4.2.2 to 4.4.2

Hi there, I'm currently rooted with 4.2.2 and I want to upgrade to the latest which I believe is 4.4.2, after a brief check I don't see the toolkits supporting this so can someone give me a clue on what to do? Is it upgrade to 4.3 then 4.4 and finally 4.4.2 or can I just jump from my current to 4.4.2?

If your on stock ROM and kernel and recovery just check for updates under about tablet system updates. If your running a custom ROM or kernel then you'll want to get to stock first. Also you can just download the factory image and adb flash it. Just search how to install 4.4,2 factory image with adb on nexus 10. There's plenty of guides.

I want to remain rooted though, also I'm trying to use the system update but it says restarting in 10, counts down then doesn't restart.
Since I want to remain rooted but just upgrade to 4.4.2 what can I do? I can't find an appropriate video.

Just update and root again. It takes a minute using one of the toolkits. Or you can just flash the super su zip which is even quicker if you have a custom recovery. Either way it's easy and quick

I can't use system updates, it won't restart after counting down from 10 it just hangs there. I also don't think the toolkits have 4.4.2, I'm pretty sure I downloaded the right files, I just don't know the commands to use in CMD.

Wugs toolkit has it.
Extract it and put it in the correct folder with Fastboot capabilities and use the commands
fastboot flash boot boot.img
fastboot flash system system.img
fastboot flash recovery recovery.img (this'll give you stock recovery)
fastboot flash userdata userdata.img (only do this one if you want to completely reset and delete everything on your internal SD card. Don't do this step of you want to keep your files like pictures and music on SD card)

See this is what I don't get, it asks me my build, which is 4.2.2. And then asks to download the image, but I want 4.4.2 so do o just change it to that?

Yeah. Choose 4.4.2. Asking your build is just so when you flash kernnel and recoveries it flashes a compatible one. But since your just flashing stock images. Just do that. But again remember it'll wipe everything so backup your SD card to a computer first

I managed to get to the point where it boots TWRP and then just had "waiting for device"
Edit: got to this same point 3 times now, tried rebooting but I'm still on 4.2.2, could you tell me what files I need to go ahead and flash it using cmd?

If you use Wigs toolkit you can flash the new update if you do a complete restore with in root. Then you can re root. Just go to flash stock + unroot then click the images drop down down box. Pick the mantaray-manta : android 4.4.4- build KOT49H then click the button that shows automatically download. After install re root and restore. Backup everything first it makes a quicker restore.

First, go download the image:

While that is downloading, make a new folder on the desktop and name it FLASH, also for extracting the file once it is downloaded I reccomend total commander:

Also head over to here to download adb and fastboot without the android sdk:

Once the zip file with adb and fastboot is downloaded extract the files into the FLASH folder. Now that we've done all this the image should be downloaded, extract the contents to the FLASH folder. Now open up command prompt. In command prompt type the following(excluding the quotation marks):
"cd C:\Users\*username*\Desktop\FLASH"
*username* Is the name of the user. Now turn off your device then boot your device into fastboot mode(hold the power+volume up+volume down buttons) once your device is in fastboot mode connect it to your computer. In command prompt type(again excluding quotations):
"fastboot devices"
After that you should see your nexus device in fastboot mode, if you have no important data and don't care about losing everything(me) you can just type this in command prompt(no quotations):
"flash-all"
But if that does not work or you do have important things, type:
"fastboot flash boot boot.img
fastboot flash system system.img
fastboot flash recovery recovery.img”

Hi guys thanks for all the help, I decided to go with Wugs toolkit, unrooted, then re rooted with 4.4.2. All worked fine just need to restore my data now
