it free some ram by limiting some stuffs running in background, but it makes multitasking "worse" not better. maybe some apps will take much time to open

thank you for explaining.. thank you!

The phone will automatically free up ram when it needs it. Leave task manager alone, it keeps your apps in memory. So for example, if you open Facebook, leave and come back, it will pickup where you left off. Instead of opening the app all over again (using more power).

[TIP] Make ICS *Faster*!!!

Hello...
A simple tip for today...
Do you run stock 4.0.3? Want to have some faster performances?
Try the tip of the day:
1. Open Settings>Developers Options>Force GPU Rendering(enable it)
2. Kill all the background apps(long press Home key and swipe all away)
3. Restart the phone.
You will surely notice a bump of improvement.
Recognizable improvements in: Facebook, Twiiter, Whats-app, XDA, Gmail etc...
Let me know if it worls!
Cheers!

Besides, most (if not all) apps that appear there are cached and they are not actually running. Exceptions are some apps that insist on having useless services running all day (for example, facebook, eats around 7-8mb RAM while doing nothing). The more cached processes you actually have, the faster these apps will launch so it doesn't make much sense to go and kill them all.
Unix works the same way. Currently on my computer with 8GB RAM running only Chromium and Pidgin (an IM app) it says I am using 6573mb of RAM! Is that possible? Well, I actually use 570mb but the rest are all cache. Since unused RAM = wasted RAM, it caches disk files I use all the time for faster access. Nothing is lost and you gain some speed. I am pretty sure Windows does the same too, at Task Manager under the CPU/RAM graphs is a small box with RAM usage, I remember it saying 'Cache' there too, but it doesn't add it to the 'Used' RAM counter so you think it's really really empty.
What does enabling Force GPU rendering do to the battery life?

Did not see a difference. But it's not smoother though...
Problem is you will break apps that aren't yet ready for hardware acceleration.
Facebook performs much better

maybe can make some unstable apps, maybe it's better to wait for all apps support ics and their "api"

I want what you say to be true, but there are some apps that aren't just cached but actually have background services running.
When you go an flick them off that apps list it doesn't just free up the ram from the cached activity but also the background services that were spawned from it. With some of the apps I launch it's noticeable if I clean up those old activities first.
try aosp+ by androiduser and flash eugene's icup kernel. you'll be surprised that speed is comparable to gb
Any difference you'll notice should be just placebo =]
Well this was a misleading thread. Whole bunch of nuthin.
The best way to speed up ics is to flash vhgomez's 1.2 or Crossbones rom, along with Eugene's Speedy3 kernel.

Not true. Op is correct. Swiping them DOES kill the process.
Flashing a different kernel increases the speed alot. I'm using eugene's ICUP speedy 3 kernel and it's really fast!

[Q] Anyone else seeing very high RAM usage?

Should I be concerned? So used to closing things out via Task Manager (from S3 & S4) to keep running smooth. I can't get the S5 below 1.34GB usage of 1.81GB available. Seems really high with nothing open or running.........

Empty ram uses the same amount of battery as full ram. Might as well have some things loaded into ram for faster access and so other apps calling on these resources don't have to expend your battery while trying to turn things on

What's your idle ram usage?

See title. Feel like the ram usage on my note 4 is high even when "idle". Please see attached image for details.
Thanks in advance for any feedback.
PS any tips on how to free up ram would be appreciated.

I read on these devices it's supposed to be high. Sounds counter intuitive, but it allows quick access to ram or something along those lines. A quick Google search should help you out.

Mine is 2.38.
Btw, this is mine without clearing anything, I ran all my normal apps and kept them in memory. Sure, I can get low memory if I clear my recently used apps, but that is not reality.
unused ram is wasted ram so you don't have to worry about it
Stock rooted. 1.56gb idle
Thanks for all the reply. Thought there was something wrong with my device.
I'm on stock rom and I've debloated my device my self. I deleted apps and services, turned off other things that I couldn't delete. My RAM usually sits between 1.16Gb to 1.42Gb.
worrying about idle ram is like worrying about benchmarks...
both mean nothing in a normally functioning phone..
I just posted this answer on reddit, but I guess I will try and spread the word a little more so that these posts stop coming up.
Android uses the Linux kernel, in the world of Linux/ Unix for those that do not know.... Unused RAM is wasted RAM. You phone will remove stuff from RAM if its getting to low on free space.

Yep. If that bar isn't sitting at 2.4 to 2.7, you're not using it enough. The entirety of the RAM is getting refreshed every cycle regardless of whether or not it's being used.

This is true of any modern OS. Even Windows Vista or newer, which will cache commonly used apps in RAM to allow for faster app starts.

I would agree, that Vista and newer has gotten better, but I would still not consider them any where near as good as Linux / Unix.

Jan update improves RAM

A few months ago I would end up with 600 mb of ram after opening a few apps including settings. Each month has brought improvements. After the January update I now have around 1200 or more free mb after opening and closing apps keeping the phone fast. I use a lot of ram with my widgets and apps so I like this last update

Does that mean to say that some background apps are being shut down more? As they say, unused ram can be at times wasted ram, so I hope this freeing up of the ram is not at the expense of apps being closed!

For me I generally do too. Back in the day I used to have "long press back to kill" and so my method of returning to home screen was always to kill an app. But I've found recently with some apps, e.g. Di radio music streaming, despite being ignored from battery optimisation, kept getting closed in the background the other day...
Therefore I hope this potential new ram management with Jan update is smarter...

It's better ram management. When I open and close settings I would lose 200mb...so it wouldn't free up the ram even though I closed settings. Now the ram is restored after closing settings.
So they have been working on ram management.

Actually you are, opened apps stored in RAM does not use any additional cpu/battery resources. On the other hand closing and then reopening apps uses the cpu so it uses more battery.

Yep, I believe that. However, I bet the difference is so minimal it really makes no difference at all.
I don't know what they improved, but I know that I have loosed 2 at 3 hours of SOT.

Some people swear the battery life is worse, other it's better, some said the device is faster, other it's slower.

Question about RAM usage

Hey guys, I hope you're all doing well.
My question is why in my RN7 that hast 4gb of RAM, there is alway at least 1.5GB free? I also noticed it in a friend's phone that have 3GB and with 1 or 2 GB free, I wouln't mind if my phone usage was low, but almost always it has to reload the apps that were opened before the 3rd or 4th most recent. I dont know if I'm making any sense but the RAM usage shouldn't be almost 100%?
Thank you
Is that for what u ask?
That's exactly what I mean, the RAM is free but several apps have to be reloaded after a while.
Edit: I think I found an answer, I suppose is the battery optimizer that closes apps after a while, if anyone knows about this, please confirm.
2Gb free here. On latest RevOS MIUI.
I'm not worried about using 2 of 4gigs, is the contrary, I want to use all the gigs so my apps don't reload too often and are ready to use

Change app battery saver of particular app to no restrictions and lock the app in recents. Maybe it'll not kill the app.

After a bit of usage, this is the answer I was looking for, I was not used to have a task killer built into the phone OS by default, doing what you said did the trick for me, thanks!
