i9500 sometimes the touchkeys (back) dont respond - Galaxy S 4 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hello!
I have an Galaxy s4 i9500 with newest DBT Firmware (after debranding the O2 Version).
But i have problems with the 2 Touchkeys under the display. The Touchkeys hangs all the time - sometimes i must touch 7 times on the back key until it shows an reation.
Is this an software or an hardware problem?
Anyone else with those problems?

Is there nobody else with this problem?
Any ideas how i can fix this?

I have the exact same problems.
It has existed ever since I got my phone, and I thought it was normal. Last night, the touchkeys stopped working completely.
Before I went to bed, I popped the battery and then turned the phone back on. To my delight, the touchkey buttons worked amazingly after it booted up. I was happy and went to bed.
When I woke up this morning, I tried the buttons again and they had gone back to being unresponsive. I popped the battery again but this time it didn't do anything different, the touchkeys were still unresponsive.
I am thinking about returning it to the store.

Thanks for your Reply!
I´ve already contacted samsung if there is a known problem. But they just say that i must reset the phone and shouldn't install any apps from the app store. They think its a problem with a app..... i dont think so but i will give it a try...

I am gonna try restoring the phone to factory defaults and see if that works. I'll keep you posted.

Ok, I tried the factory reset and it did not fix the problem. The touch key buttons are still randomly working and then randomly not working.
At least my device is now ready to go back to the store.

Ok, so I returned the device, got a new one and the buttons work properly now. Woo hoo!
The previous unit was defective.

random shut downs

anyone experiencing this with your phones?
most of the time when i put my phone in my pocket, it just shuts down and i have to boot it back up.
happens like 10/15 times a day.
I have experienced some reboots (not so many like your shut downs), when some applications try to interact with the marketplace.
Your shutdowns, might have to do with a battery issue... Did you try any useful diagnostic test inside the MFG tools?
I've got them also....
Mostly when I've got the phone in my pocket, off course I don't see it shutdown. When i switch it on it doesn't simply resume, it boots. I guess it has something to do with too much force on a particular spot.
I've had it shutdown a few times when viewing pictures. Possibly a totally different issue, but nevertheless.
I have no solution (apart from keeping it less in my pocket).
Greetz,
Ronald
Happens sometimes for me. Maybe once a day or less.
me too. I think once a week or max 2 times a week.

i dont believe its a battery issue, because if its on a table then its fine and is turned on without any problems.
i guess the optimus 7 is not pocket friendly...
oddly i never had this issue back in nodo.
yep my op7 used to randomly shutdown more than 3 times per day after i flashed OPN rom this problem seem less.

I second this.....
I think it maybe has something to do with the option to switch on the phone when the camera-button is pressend. This button gets pressed very easy when you put your phone in your pocket....
Can this option be turned off?? The camera is able to switch on, even when the lockscreen is active.....
Grr,
Ronald
---------- Post added at 01:10 PM ---------- Previous post was at 01:03 PM ----------
This option can be switched off.
I switched it off and will try if it helps.....
been shutting off like crazy today.
one point it didnt even boot until i removed the battery.
i really think the OP7 is not that great of a phone anymore.
Small update;
I haven't had a shutdown since I switched off the option to turn on the phone upon press off the camera button. I've done my best (put it in my pocket a lot etc). But couldn't manage it...
I would like to switch off the windows button also, but this isn't possible with simple settings...
Grr,
Ronald
Happens sometimes when I use 4th & Mayor.
i had this problem to, it would just shut down sometimes when it was in my pocket and sometimes just when i was using it. Usally after it had shut down on me my battery % went also bizar. This seems to be fixed with doing a normal reboot.
i m on the stock rom and did not rooted my phone.
For me the solution was to format my sd card.
Did this sunday and havent had a shut down now for two days.
if it comes back ill report it.
I am running for 6 and a half days without a reboot..... Still going strong....

tried it, but still restarts on me... :\
edit:
so i found how it restarts (at least i think).
if i hold the power button for a long time it will restart...
no need to even slide down to power off...
what's the point in slide down to power off if u can still turn it off by holding the power button...
Got an optimus 7 yesterday, had 3 restarts last night, I think its a Mango problem.
Small renewed update;
Shortly after my previous update the phone crashed (I was WIFI tethering, playing radio and then connected the USB cable so Zune started - this seems to much ).
Since this reboot I had some shutdowns again (2 I believe). All of these reboots after carrying the phone in my pocket and then sitting down (putting more mechanical force on the force).
I still think that the functions to switch on the phone upon pressing the 'windows' button and the camera button have something to do with the problem. I have switched off the camera button (in the camera settings), but when the windows button gets pressed and then (in the lockscreen) the camera button is pressed the phone still switches on in camera function.
Does anybody have a clue if it's possible to turn off these buttons for switching on the phone? These functions were introduced with the Mango update, as is the problem we're talking about.

Agreed.... Seems like stupidity....
I've read in some app comments that there are some applications that interfere with the phone going to sleep or with the wake up.
I've no reboot problem in this moment, I've seen two or three reboot since i bought it...
But can it be some app installed?

Same problem here. Had multiple restarts at random. Flashed my phone a few times, but it didn't help since I was installing 4th and Mayor every time. Then I flashed it again and didn't install 4th and Mayor. Seems stable now. <Fingers crossed>

Does it completely fix the problem? How long ago did you send it to LG and did not experience the problem even once?
Does anybody know if this happens with other phone models? (Maybe it's a OS bug).

[Q] Nexus 4 shuts down right after boot every time!

Hi,
I don´t know what to do. I got my phone 2 days ago. All fine. Rooted right away and used only adfree and titanium backup to restore apps.
Today out of the blue my phone shuts down. When I reboot it shuts down again right after Android booted up. Every time!
Can´t use it at all!
Tried reflashin factory und relocking but still it shuts of right after start of Android. I can get to bootloader and wipe in recovery all day. That works but as soon as android boots up it shuts down again once you reach the lockscreen.
Guess my phone has a failure but I wanted to ask here first before returning it.
And honestly I did not do something kernel or rom or OC.
Can't tell you on the N4, but my vivid, anytime it started to do what you're describing, I had to re-flash the boot.img and reinstall the ROM to stop the boot loops.
Sent from my Nexus 4 using xda premium
I already did a factory reste via image flash. Still no good. Once you reach the lockscreen it shuts down "powering off"
temperature issue?, there must be some hardware fault that's forcing it to shutdown after all services are loaded or a issue with battery stats.I would restore it and rma, or somehow drain the battery then recharge it

Hi,
I did the same.....drained battery but afterwards it would not charge again all i got was a red LED and no hint to fix it helped me. Phone is completely dead.
I already ordered a replacement unit and am still waiting for it
Same deal with mine. It worked fine for 6 weeks, it was completely stock the entire time. I have sent it away for RMA.
---------- Post added at 05:31 PM ---------- Previous post was at 05:28 PM ----------
Also, when I told the CSR what it was doing they had absolutely no hesitation to process the RMA, they didn't even suggest a factory reset, I'm assuming this must be a known issue.
Same issue/ diff reason
I have the same issue with starting up the phone and automatic shut down.
I dropped mine in the water, however. Nothing seems to be wrong with it other than this auto shut down.. I was thinking that the battery was possibly fried. I ordered a new one to see if that would fix it.
Mine is also rooted too, however. This was the issue of the above original post. If there is a solution for either of my issues, I would greatly appreciate it.
thanks!

Hey guys
I tried replacing the battery and the issue still persists and also tried a few different roms including stock but it does the same thing.
My N4 is not under warranty any more. Has anyone got this issue fixed...??

Random screen wakes when phone is locked

Use original theme
I had the same problem. Get back to the original theme. And every thing will go us you like
Since the posting relates to my recent post - my quick update:
I am and I always was on stock theme - after rebooting my phone the problem seems to be solved for me-
since it doesn't wake again by itself.
I think it's something app related- I haven't found the one app that causes the trouble- Now I track all the apps I open to find out.
Well, guys, it seems it solved. One day, the phone was again waking by itself. I thought it might be related to the Adaptive Brightness. I deactivated the adaptive brightness, and phone went nuts locking by itself every time i was trying to wake him. No chance to power off or acces any menu. So i connected to PC, and using Lenovo ZUK toolkit i rebooted the phone. Since then, i haven t noticed the random wakes anymore.
Random wake
1. Turnoff autobrightnes
2 Turnoff doubleTap to wake
3, Turnoff "prevent random wakes "
Profit!
The issue doesn't seem to be fixed in the latest COS I have this issue. My device is STOCK and NOT rooted. With indeed autobrightness enabled it keeps unlocking when you reboot the problem is gone. Really frustrating ..
Hard Reset did the trick

Strange thing is if it appears to happen after a few days of usage without reboot I started to play a little bit with the settings and found out it really is the option "Prevent accidental unlocking with proximity sensor". The proximity sensor works flawlessly so it's really a software bug I guess.

Hey guys. Is this related to the random reboot problem. For 20 days my phone never rebooted even once, then it started rebooting. It is still doing so after the latest OTA. Is it a hardware problem or trying solutions mentioned here solved it for someone?

Nexus 4 screen freezes randomly, no reaction when touching.

Hi everyone!
So I just had this problem after I woke up yesterday. I googled a lot but only found similiar problems.
Let me tell you what happened chronologically:
After turning the phone on in the morning it started updating apps as if I was doing a firmware update: "updating apps 1 of 135" etc. Note that my nexus was already running on 5.1.1 and had the latest updates installed.
Now it randomly freezes the screen on whatever screen it was before it happens and it won't respond to any touch input. This can also happen when not using the phone, then it will freeze at the lockscreen (the time freezes with it so sometimes i can see at what time it froze). Also, it loses connection with Wi-Fi as i'm using Whatsapp Desktop when i'm on my laptop and it mentions me that my phone is not connected.
The only thing that "fixes" (temporarily) it is a reboot. Now sometimes, on the lockscreen, i can just hold the power button and the pop-up comes in to turn the phone of, which i can somehow just tap on an it responds by turning the phone off. But sometimes (less frequent than the latter mentioned) the pop-up doesn't come in and holding the power button for a few secs will do the trick.
I hope I informed you all enough and my end question is: does any of you know what this is? How i can fix it or what i can do to prevent it or anything as I am hopeless. (my G3 is up for reparation so this is my sisters old phone, i had a nexus 4 myself for 2 years before the G3).
Thanks in advance!!
The best way to test it is by reformat the OS.
I positively think that it will solve the problem.
Since the phone is no longer under warranty, I guess there is no harm to install custom rom on it. They are fast and stable too.
Hope this help. Good luck.

EXACT thing happened to me too. Backup your data and hard reset from recovery. This fixed it for me

Phone Freezing After 2 Weeks

I have had the phone for what will be 2 weeks tomorrow, I preordered it in and picked it up at a Sprint Store. I have had a new issue showing up the last couple of days. I will take out my phone and find that it is frozen. I will not respond to pressing the power or volume buttons. The most recent time this happened, I noticed that the light on the left hand top of the phone was lit purple, so it clearly was not off. I am not sure if that was true when this happened before. Anyway, the only thing to do at this point is to hold the power key down for about 10 seconds, which restarts the phone. It happened twice today, the first time when I got up in the morning and tried to wake up my phone, and then on the way home from work, I had my phone in my pocket while I was riding the subway and reading a paper, and when I took the phone out it had the same problem. This also happened I think one other time either yesterday or the day before.
Also, a few days earlier, the phone also froze when I was trying to do a camera burst by holding down the camera button. That time, it froze on the last image I had on the camera. That was when I found I could restart the phone by holding the button 10 seconds.
Anyone have any suggestions as to what is happening and what I should do....before I bring it back to the Sprint Store, I mean.
I'm having the same issues too! Locks up at least once a day.

I did had a couple freezes early on, but haven't had any as of late. Question did you set the phone up with a back up, or did you do a clean install. In some other forums it was suggested to set the phone up from scratch with no back up or transferring data from another device.

My phone a few days ago was freezing constantly and stuttering. I went into safe mode and the phone was working fine. Nova kept saying it wasn't responding. So I deleted Nova, a few icon packs. The phone has been running smoothly. No issues at all. I have installed Lawnchair Launcher. Everything still running smoothly.
Another thing I have noticed is that things kind of just work themselves out with this device. I experienced a few freezes early on and some laggy moments. This last week the phone feels good, no freezes or anything.
There's a new update on the play store called "essential services" an entirely different thing from "essential resources". Since I am fortunate enough not have the freezing issue, can one of you guys see if this fixes it?

Did you try safemode? It shouldn't crash there. So it's an app. Not sure why Nova won't play well on my phone. Lawnchair is butter smooth for me. Tried the new Pixel 2 Launcher and that works great to.
My phone has frozen even in safe mode and I have only used the stock launcher. It seems to happen when cellular signal is very low. Doesn't seem to matter what app I have open, although I suspect the camera app is involved as it usually is when photos are being sent to cloud.
