Im going to treat myself with a new phone and im trying to decide wich device sould i get the optimus g or nexus 4 i live in iceland and the 2 devices cost exactly the same.
And a little concern question. Ive read that these 2 have a overheating problem ? Is that something lg has fixed ? And how frequent is that overheating issue ?
I haven't seen any overheating complaints since the recent hardware revisions. I don't think you'll have an issue.
That said, what do you look for in a phone? If you care about development at all, then you want the Nexus. The LGOG has more available memory and USB OTG, as well as true LTE.
I asked myself the same question I went with nexus because of the updates and honestly I didn't like the ui of Optimus g
As for the over heating problem most people here don't have an issue with it I seem to only have a problem of there is a rogue app or charging watching Netflix at the same time
Even then it's not hot just very warm on the back panel. I believe both phones have thermal throttle so if the processor gets to hot it will slow down in order not to kill your device / mine has never done this even when it was almost 90 outside

When was the last revicion on the hardware on the devices ?
Is it possible to activate the lte chip on the nexus ?
And do these on screen buttons on the nexus ever get annoying ?
I've never had a problem with overheating, I benchmark, game a lot. The device has thermal throttling

Revision happened in Feb or March if I remember correctly has nubs on bottom
As for LTE yes you have to root then flash an older baseband / do a forum search for which baseband
Now that I am use to onscreen buttons I get very annoyed when I have to help a friend of mine who has a gs3 the soft keys are so much more intuitive Imo then hard buttons

Do you find the 16 gb on the nexus to be enaugh storage?
I like to listen to music take photos and do a little bit of gaming.
Just look at some specs and reviews, what appeals to you the most? How much support are you looking for on the device, etc? Personally I'm in love with the N4.
I find the ui on the n4 more to my likeing but i dont like those on screen buttons (dont know why never used a device with them)
And on the other hand i like the LTE and the 32 gb storage on the optimus g
And im buying a device to last me at least the next 2 years
The on screen buttons can get fixed with pie

You can make the buttons disappear and use PIE for navigation. Check out YouTube.

By using PIE controls and making the nav bar disappear. Alternatively, if you (like me) think the buttons are too large but still want them many ROMs allow you to change the size of the nav bar too.

Considering its not from Samsung, and LG isn't the best brand. Is it worth an upgrade from galaxy nexus to nexus 4? I purchased the gnex for 500 $ (dumb me) and nexus 4 is now selling for 299 $ only? WTF? What is the downside of it?

If you want a faster CPU, better/bigger screen, more RAM, etc., then it is definitely worth an upgrade. Downside of it, is that it isn't available yet.
Considering it's not from Samsung you will not have squeaky plastic or inverted back menu buttons just to make it different, and no closed source software

Also, it looks more elegant than the Galaxy Nexus.

Really, the only downside of the Nexus 4 is the limited storage options.
Besides, Google Music solves the low storage option for music, and you can always use something like Dropbox for extra bits and pieces if need be, leaving the onboard storage for videos and whatnot. So for most users, it should be plenty.
Must say I can't wait to get mine. For the first time I have the option of rooting the stock ROM, job done! That said, will probably end up going with a custom ROM in order to have custom buttons and slightly improved performance and battery life.

People seem to always mistake, build quality and feel of the device. Samsung phones look and feel plasticy, but their build quality is very good, the Galaxy S2 is propably one of the most durable smartphones, after 1,5 years of usage without a case and countless drops, it's still n pretty good condition, unlike for example the HTC phones of some of my friends wich look like s hit (volume button missing etc.)
The reason that im still glad the samsung isn't the manufacturer of the new nexus is the fact that I'm sick of power hungry, oversaturated, screenburning Amoled.

What are you talking about?
The only true weaknesses of this phone are the lack of LTE and the low storage options. But if you are on t-mobile and use more cloud based storage or just not too much of your internal memory then it's a great phone.
The Nexus 4 has one of the best processors on the market (Qualcomm SnapDragon S4 Pro), 2 GB of ram (galaxy nexus has 1GB) and an improved camera over the galaxy nexus. The internal battery is 2100 mAh which is the same size as the extended battery for the galaxy nexus or 300 mAh more than the 1800 mAh standard battery of the galaxy nexus. Also the battery on the Nexus 4 is "serviceable" because you can replace it by removing the screws on the bottom of the phone. It's obviously not something you can do on the fly, but it is something you can do yourself. The battery life on this phone in theory should be fantastic compared to the galaxy nexus because not only does it have a larger battery and a more efficient (and faster) CPU, but it doesn't have LTE which means that is one less radio to be killing the battery. I've heard some people say that the battery life has been poor but I read a review just yesterday and the reviewer said you might be able to make it 2 days with minimal use. Also keep in mind that this is on "beta" software, It is not the final version of Android 4.2 which will be released on the phone starting Tuesday and I've heard they plan to send an OTA to the existing phones on Sunday.
I plan on buying the phone. probably not on Tuesday, with some restraint I will make it a few months before I buy it and look at real user reviews.

If you can stomach the short battery life and mediocre camera on the S4, you should stick with it. Right now Samsung is deeply into the lag eliminating stuff so it is worth waiting a couple of weeks to see where things stand, but the S4 obviously has boatloads more extres much better screen, battery life, camera plus new sensors, IR blaster... currently coming with some fluidity compromises. Hold on to it until the dust is cleared.

True true! Il do just that. See what the common problems are
Sent from my Nexus 4 using Tapatalk 2
It is always worth waiting to see how much progress manufacturers can achieve, Samsung has the largest resources to deal with issues, so I'd expect responsiveness to improve vastly by June. The Nexus 4 should help easing the wait.
I switched from an N4. My main reasons for switching are:
1) The N4's camera was hopeless in low light, as The Verge put it, its better to 'just use your memory'.
2) I had a massive delay when receiving push notifications on WiFi and 3G. There was a Google support thread where ppl basically identified a faulty driver, which even now has not been fixed. Some ppl say they have no problem but I certainly did.
3) The S4 has 4G!
4) After the latest update the N4s battery life improved dramatically. But the S4 is better still, despite using it like a new phone it still surpasses the N4 in battery longevity.
Arguably the N4 is slightly smoother in some operation. When changing tabs on the S4 there is a slight delay before anything happens. But this can be solved by simply switching to Chrome.
The screen smearing on the S4 makes it seem more laggy but in reality its not.
Hope this helps you decide.
/edit Almost forgot to mention, I miss photosphere from the N4
The Galaxy S4 has a better camera by a mile then the Nexus 4 and the battery life is also a lot better. Plus you get a bigger screen, faster processor. Over all the S4 is a way better device.

Go for it! It's pretty much the best Android out.
-Powerful CPU/GPU (especially the Octa)
-Excellent Camera
-High memory variants PLUS MicroSD support upto 64GB
-5.0" HD1080P SAMOLED display with 440PPI
-Huge 2600mAh battery
-USB OTG
-Native support for almost all Audio and Video formats
-Multiview Multitasking
-Capacitive display usable with gloves
-A whole lot of sensors
-Wolfson DAC (in the Octa)
-IR Blaster
...the list goes on, it pretty much whipes the floor with the N4 in everything except updates, but this being a Samsung, it will get updates for atleast 20months like the GS2.

Ya Google Music allows up to I believe 20,000 of hosting for free. And keeping any amount of files on a phone, especially a nexus 4 where you'll be most likely flashing different ROMs, kernels, etc, is not the wisest choice since permanent loss of data could unfold. I would get it. I lobe the glass on the front and back and use no case just a screen protector. Battery life is decent and gets me through a day of moderate use. Get rid of the cheap GS3
Sent from my Nexus 4 using xda app-developers app
this a pretty solid device if your like stock android and for the price is a steal. Now if you want LTE, Removable battery, SD card, better camera you should maybe look at the Nexus GS4. For the 5 months that I have the Nexus 4 the only problems I have is the chrome bezel scratches easy even with a case. and I'm not too happy with 16gb of storage but I learn to deal with it and having Music,Pictures, files on the cloud.
I agree with the above... If you can afford to get the S⁴ Google Edition ($650+tax) then I would say definitely get that... It had everything the N⁴ is lacking literally... Its ONLY drawback is its not a premium feel, but its so much better than the S3...
But you get the Google S⁴ and your getting the superamoled (which I definitely prefer to IPS), your getting a much better camera (I feel my Galaxy S2 camera was better than the N⁴s), you get expandable memory(12gb usable is nowhere near enough for me, always struggling to delete stuff), you get LTE, and I would imagine you get USB OTG which the N⁴ lacks...
There are just too many ways in my opinion where the N⁴ is lacking... Tho a great phone for the price mind you... But if you want Google... And the best out there... And can afford it... Get the Google S⁴ not N⁴...

So I gave it to my dad.
Now, let me make a few things clear. No matter if its a nexus or anything else, I am going to root it and install a custom rom as soon as I purchase it. So, the question of running the latest version of android doesnt come up. I want suggestions based on your overall device experience.

Nexus 4 all the way..
N4 is way better in performance than S3. Even S3 users have moved on from S3 to N4, check other thread with similar title.
As you said you will be rooting it, so u have ample of ROM's to try. 2gigs of RAM and 1.5 GHz makes it a BEAST and stand out off all. though the camera is not as good as S3 to admit. Rest its your call. Nexus 4 anytime the best .
I'm with the n4 now and am more than pleased.
However if removeable storage and battery are your thing then the s3 is the way to go.
I personally prefer the development community that the n4 has along with the plethora of ROM and kernel choices. Plus with online cloud storage, who needs a micro SD these days.

I say go with the Galaxy SIII. Much cheaper to replace parts when broken and way easier. More battery life than the Nexus. You get the added benefit of the phone being popular and will have more access to premium cases and accessories that the Nexus 4 may never see. I love my Nexus 4, but if you already have software taken care of, go for the GSIII.

Okay. I actually need a lot of storage. I have a large music collection and I keep docs and other imp stuff on my phone just in case I need them urgently. Assume that I purchase the S3. Will the 750MB ram and crappy exynos source codes lead to problems in future?
If yes, then I'll compromise with the storage thing and purchase the Nexus 4. I can do away with the storage problems by purchasing a 64GB pendrive.
About the camera, I don't really use my phone to take pictures. Took around 3-4 pictures in the last 7 months using my NoteII. I have a camera for taking pictures.
I have n4 and my girlfriend s3,and I don't know why is considered that s3 has much better camera. Maybe it's not the camera, rather the amoled screen on s3 which gives that over saturated surreal look. I took the same photo with n4 and s3 and transferred to laptop and there wasn't almost any difference between them.

The nexus 4 doesn't support USB OTG so the pendrive won't help
If storage is an absolute need then I think you should go for the s3.
If the lack of ram bugs you, take a look at the s3 lte (same exynos quad, 2 gigs of ram)
But it definitely won't match the nexus 4's performance no matter what. Its gonna be a lot less smooth. If you can live with your note II for a few more months you should do that and buy the new nexus when it comes out this fall.....
EDIT: Read the first post. Oops, my bad about the note II. It all comes down to storage then. If you really need a lot of it, buy the s3 lte(or the us s3, that's good too). Otherwise, nexus 4 all the way. Cheers

How much space does your files need. I was worried about space but lets be honest with all the cloud features out there like BOx giving you 50 gigs when you sign up you can put your stuff anywhere. I have 0 issues playing my 1000 or so songs from a streaming Google Music. I hear ya storage was an issue for me but you learn to adapt....
Dude. Use the cloud!
There are several services out there, I personally use drop box and copy.
On another note.... I have over 3k songs uploaded to play music through music manager on my desktop and stream them bad boys through the play music app.
The future is here.

I kind of think the mentions here in this thread (N4 vs HTC OneX+) kind of applies and makes the same argument, especially as I even bought up the S3 in comparison in that thread. http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2086175
Mainly with the S3, are these important to you?
*) replaceable/extendable battery
*) Micro-SD card slot
If so then S3 would be for you, since can't seem to decide on everything else

I use dropbox and such too, though I normally won't rely on it for very large files to my phone basically. There's OwnCloud if you don't mind setting that up (just kind of a pain if you're expecting it to stream).
Far as movies and audio, etc on my local wifi or wifi in general, that's what stuff like Google Play Music, Qloud Media, or Plex is for.
Course if the Nexus4 supported USB-OTG like my Nexus 7 does (well it 'sorta' does, but it's hardware limitation is that it needs extra juice via an external power source), then I'd just pop on a micro-SD card or thumbdrive if for some reason I really needed local connected storage. (There's also AirDroid if you're just trying to transfer).
PS: I love dropbox, I use a Eye-Fi SD card, which can use WAP off my phone to save photos I take to my computer at home, at home I have it saving to my dropbox folder, so I can always pull up the photos via dropbox on my phone if I wish to share from there rather than having to re-configure the card to save straight to my phone but then still having to end up saving it to the desktop later.
I know you tj bro... U used to have sga right? I loved your stocklite rom man. Exactly one month ago i was in same situation as you. I was going insane on which mobile to buy s3 or n4. Finally i bought n4 because of its dev support on xda.
Major Pros of n4 :
RAM 2 gb
Awesomest support of ROMs.
Future proof as compared to s3
Build quality is good as compared to s3
Major Cons of n4 :
Delayed push notification in whatsapp etc though it will hopefully fixed in next Google's next update.(though you can fix it having a simple hack)

Not sure I'd put that in a "con" list if you don't know why or if it's even related to the hardware as opposed to all OSes when the same could happen on the S3 side depending on the software, apps, region, configuration. etc.
PS: Also if it's not responding to ping while on wifi especially with specific wifi spots, you might have to configure a DNS server manually (like google's 8.8.8.8, as the phone may have picked up a configuration that's not resolving certain domains correctly etc).

Dude you might not know about the issue but here is the proof it is only on n4: productforums.google.com/forum/m/#!topic/mobile/SQH6JnIFYcQ
Also you can also Google there are many complaints about delayed push notification.
Edit : I also forgot to clarify that delaying only happens when screen is off

OK so I will be getting a new device soon and I'm torn between this phone or the galaxy s4. So I'm wondering will this device be supported for a long time. And will it be just as fast.considering its snapdragon s4 vs snapdraggon 600

Nexus 4 is 1000x times better than Galaxy S4

i'm sure you will love this phone. So far I've never found a phone with a better overall than nexus 4.
The design is classy and the processor is very good. battery life is good. and the front and the back of the phone is made by gorilla glass. camera is 8mp with flash supported. and there is front camera as well. Easy to customize and root. i've root a lot of phone before and this is the easiest. I root my n4 in <5mins. And the price is not really expensive as well. so this is really recommended. it's hard to find a better phone than n4 at its price.
I have had my Nexus 4 for two months now and am happy with the choice I made. I do recommend a good case or at least a bumper and screen protector. I would only consider the Google Edition Galaxy S4, and you will pay a $200 premium over the cost of the Nexus 4.
This phone will be supported for at least 2 years down the line with ota updates second to none. That alone makes it better than any other phone in my book. Plus most of the snapdragon 600's power is wasted on Samsung's touchwiz so the nexus 4 is at least as fast as the s4.
Posting threads like this get you a very biased opinion.
I will try to be as straight as I can without sounding like a device fan boy.
Decide what you are gonna do with the device. The nexus 4 is outstanding on the development side but lacking on features. Next decide how much time you want to spend messing with your device. Battery can be a bug factor. Next decide on memory. Nexus is limited there. Then choose the best device that suites you.
As long as it fits your needs there is no wrong device.

Yes and no. Depends on your usage patterns. Battery life on 4.2.2 was respectable. However with the 4.3 update a slew of problems have been found. My Nexus 4 currently has the: low battery life, camera flash bug, boot loader on power off bug, AOSP keyboard bug.
I would suggest asking around. If you need a workable phone (for now) get a N4 with 4.2.2 else go for 4.3 to save time

Yes while that's true I personally thing touch wiz is s*it and if I get the s4 I will be flashing cm and a customers kernel on it first thing. And I do spend a lot of time messing with my phone. Over clocking. Building customers kernels with extra features etc also a lot of time gaming and listening to music. And I'm not sure about the storage in the n4 because I do use a lot of storage for music pictures/video etc. And I do like the bigger screen of the s4 but I like the support the n4 will be getting. Even though I will be building/flashing custome ROMs/kernels on which ever phone I get. So that's kind of where I'm torn about it the storage and screen size of the s4 but the openness and support of the n4

Else If ( Don't trust LG )
Get Oppo.Find.5;
Else

If ( You have extra cash to spare ) {
