Depends upon your usage. In case you are not a fan of customization, then remain unrooted.

is it easy to unroot?

You can't install a custom rom without root. You need busybox, SU and the root exploit to allow you to flash a custom rom. The reason the overclocking app doesn't work is because you don't have super user permission (part of rooting) and the stock kernel isn't scalable if I remember right. Point is no root no rom lol.

you MUST have root access to overclock Milestone
All wrong!
You can install ROM whitout being root. All you need is just flash the Vulnerable Recovery.
Once you have it, you are ready to execute the OR update.zip and boom.
From there you can root it or not.

absolutely correct..rooting the device is independent of updating the Rom..
I do keeping on changing roms without root.

That's what the op was asking (reference to scaling/overclocking)...you can't install a "custom" rom with a custom kernel, radio etc without root priveledges. Basic consumer handsets do not allow writing to the system partition(Hence the need for root. With the exception of ota updates or manual updates from the provider/manufacturer.)

[Q] Galaxy S4 SGH-i337 4.4.2 root help!

Sorry if I posted this in the wrong place or if there is already a thread about this. If there is, I couldn't find it. I really want to root my phone to use it as a mobile wifi hotspot for my tablet and I am having a really hard time trying to find a link to a forum or a youtube video about how to root my phone. So far, I have only found root tutorials for models other than mine. Do I just have an obscure phone model or is it just more difficult to root? I have wanted to do this for quite some time now so any help is appreciated!
4.4.2 is a new release so currently there is not a root method. As of my last reading there is some significant progress in finding a root method. This is definitely not an obscure phone model. Just a brand new update that developers are still working to root.

Is there any workaround for this, as this seems like a pain not being able to mount system in recovery.

This is the only option. All you have to do to mount system is a quick flash of one package in ODIN, and then you just have to do another ODIN after you finish flashing in recovery. It's not that bad really.

Ehh, I want to upgrade but it just seems like a pain to be tethered to a computer when you need to flash. Maybe I'm making a big deal over nothing, idk.

Not being able to flash and restore backups on the go definitely is a downside, so this definitely isn't for flashaholics or people who want their flashable mods wherever they are. It's a matter of whether you're willing to take time to set it up stable all at once or just chill back until things are updated (root method and safestrap namely)

Yeah, i tend to flash quite a few zips on the go, and not being able to is a big downside.
Hello. I have the same problem. I am trying to unlock my sgh-i337 with Android OS 4.4.2, but first wanted to root it. I was able to install the superuser app but when launched an error pops upon installation. Help anyone?

You need to a lot more reading in the general forum. What firmware are you on? You can't just install super su from the play store which I'm assuming you did. If I'm wrong please correct me

How do I check the firmware? The baseband version is I337UCUFNB1.
Yes, I have installed the Super SU from playstore, but before I have used a root_sgh-i337.bat file.

Here you go.
I would prefer to get code from at&t, but have to wait 48 hours for them to get back to the guy who sold the phone to me. I'm keeping my fingers crossed. If they refuse to provide the code then I will have to mess with the phone to get it unlocked or sell it as is.

How about you flash any custom rom you want and then use root cloak which hides the root from apps you define meaning your banking app can't see that you are rooted.
This way you can be rooted and use banking app. You will need to have xposed installed for this to work. Use Google to read up on root cloak.

Sadly this doesn't work with the Barclay's banking app, I've done a lot of searching to find a solution and nothing
There is a good reason not to use banking apps with root... I wouldn't risk doing that... Also to root and unroot or change the kernel every time is cumbersome

You can search and download stock ROM for your phone, then flash via Odin.

I believe you can unroot directly without losing data. At least with chainfire you can use the unroot option and that's it.
You will void warranty when rooting however, so not sure why you would want to go back to unrooted once rooted?

I believe both SU and Magisk have options in then to full unroot, so it should be as simple as that.

Hello. Is there an app that won't run after root? I know Knox doesn't work. Another? Thanks.

Most banking apps, netflix, some games etc. pp. require root to be hidden from them...
