I got my nexus one exactly 1 week ago, and this device is amazing! I unlocked it and installed the cyanogen mod the day after i got it, and Iam really impressed of the results all you developers out there making theese custom roms happen.
I'have read on the internet that nexus one hardware has a fm recciver and transmitter + N wireless capable chip.
And its not even mentioned in the phone's spec list(i've hard it was at lauch, but was removed short time after), is this because there is currently no software support that they wont advertise the features?
Or is this just hardware which is on the phones chip because its just how they make them, and the features arent nesseseary availble to the phone.
Any ideas? or status on this?
Sorry my english is not very good + Iam a newbie =)

802.11n works with the stock ROM, but it's only at 2.4 GHz (the phone doesn't appear to include the necessary antenna and RF components to work with the 5 GHz band). It's also only single-stream N, so you won't get link speeds higher than 65 Mbit. Maybe they didn't advertise it because it's only marginally faster than 802.11g, and generally the phone can't even saturate a G connection. In theory, you may get slightly better range with N and perhaps slightly worse battery life. I don't really know why they removed it from the specs shortly after launch.

Probably both. Some minimal extra hardware or connections may or may not be necessary to fully use the FM radio functions. But a Google employee (Swetland) stated that the main reason it wasn't included was because they didn't have time to do the software integration, and it wasn't a priority.
Thanx I would love to have a inbuild fm transmitter, that is just sick, I dont think any other cell phone have this working. We just need be patient and hope for best I guess

there are many many cell phones that have FM receiver and transmitter. the nokia n97 has both an FM radio, and also you can turn on the FM transmitter to play your music thru your car's stereo by tuning into a frequency, and your phone will broadcast to that frequency. actually the nexus one is missing this function when a lot of other phones have it! mainly high end nokia phones.
Don't count on the Nexus ever getting FM transmission capability. It does not have the FTC's stamp of approval for such a feature. FM receiving may be possible some day, but that's up to Google to write the necessary drivers and programs for it.
Or if it is possible maybe Macodo can port it from the desire rom like he did the camera. I'm just saying maybe..

The FTC denying the FM Trans was a joke..... The feds are so paranoid with cell phones and cars I find it hard to believe they will be approving many more FM Trans in cell phones..... Receiver....well, I search this forum everyday waiting to see the post with the "Flashable .zip to enable FM Radio!"
/me is willing to say we'll have FM Radio *SOON*
FM radio is great, i guess it use less battery power than internet radio over 3g.
I do have a FM transmitter in my car but the quality is kind of ****ty, the car i use at work dosent have any input or aux plug to the stereo.
Since we're on it, what do you guys think the future will bring the nexus one? or wish list?

It may never come "officialy" for the nexus, but if they're working the aosp code future phones, then it's just a matter of devs flipping a switch instead of having to write code from the bottom up.
Nah, you don't, they say that to get the best reception, but you can do with out. Look up N900's fm capabilities to transmit/receive, you can do it without a plugged in antenna/headphones.
Just as aside for people wanting FM transmission with the Nexus One - a FM transmitter with a 3.5mm jack only costs around $5 (Australian Dollars) from ebay, and you can pick them up in stores for about the same price. Obviously not as convenient as having it built in and not having to take an extra accessory around - but I would assume you wouldn't want to use it in too many places anyway. Say the car, maybe a stereo at home and thats mainly it?
i don't need a transmitter as much as a receiver.
Hey all, I was wondering if anyone was able to locate some radiation specifications for this phone? Cancer causing or not, I was wondering if the data exists.
I only get EDGE in my apartment, and I know that if I don't check use 2G only, my phone will be emitting a stronger signal in search of that 3G tower.
What about GPS? And does using the handset while using Navigation subject you to any more radiation than normal? I recall some pamphlets included with other phones limit the ear-to-phone range to a minimum of 1".
The energy in the radio waves our phones generate is less than the energy in the green light spectrum our eyes detect. What does that mean? Well you are probably safer using your phone than standing in a green field on a sunny day.
It takes a certain amount of energy to break DNA bonds. Green light can "bend" those bonds but not break them. Our phones radio waves can't even bend them.

So are you referring to maximum radiation emitted or average radiation according to usage set by the manufacturer? I know the radiation is low, but I'm curious about what that maximum is. Where would someone find those figures?

Oh come now, with wireless phones, wifi, microwaves, bluetooth (keyboards, mics and headsets) surrounding us everyday, you're going to worry about this phone?
Sent from my T-Mobile G2 using Tapatalk
Seriously, did I say I was worried? I have yet to mention why I need this data.
So here it is: I'm researching FCC regulations on radiation and its effects on mobile hardware development. This is part of a larger project which examines the correlation between technological advances and overall radiation exposure.
So don't be so quick to hate.
Nevertheless I found the data on my own. For anyone who is curious, it is:
1.310 W/kg Head and 0.784 W/kg Body
If you have the FCC ID for the phone (or any other device) then you can get the full reports from here: www fcc gov/oet/ea/fccid/ (silly system, won't let me post links and automatically turns a web address into a link so I can't post it as text)
GPS is receive only so using that shouldn't have any additional impact. However since the phone will be downloading maps etc... it will make the cell network link more active than if the navigation wasn't running.
Does anyone else have issue with the strength of the wireless radio on these. My signal is absolutely terrible. My phone gets better signal by A LOT. I am on the latest update not rooted.

Yep
In my back yard, the A500 cant 'see' my AP but my HD2 can (albeit only 1 bar BUT it is still usable)
Yup mine sucks as well... much worse than any of my phones.
I even tried put a copy of "iwconfig" into /system/bin
and then downloaded "Wifi txpower" from the market.
This gave me some control over the power output of the wifi card.
Except that my card was already at full power, so it did'nt improve anything,
I can at least lower power to conserve battery now...
I think a hardware mod to the internal antenna is what is really needed, although I don't think it's been done yet...
What specific versions are you running?
I keep signal (3-4 skulls) outside my flat and in the lift for about 2 floors.
Nothing wrong with the antenna (located at the lower lt corner of the tab).

What do you mean what versions am I running? I have the latest 3.2.1 running and the wifi has never been good. If I had known it was going to be this bad I might have returned it. I think I am outside my return window though since I bought it on Thanksgiving.

Bad, has been bad, and always will be (in my opinion). I have several of these and they are worse than other models. I've tried several ROM's and they don't make a difference. So therefore, I've come to the belief that it's the hardware.

That is what I was afraid of. I am not sure if I should try and sell this and get something else or just deal with it, but it is certainly annoying and makes it pretty useless when it can't pick up wireless.

Are there any other tricks that might get the wifi working better? Can rooting and installing a different ROM help?

aw crap, I was hoping for a software fix :/
My reception is abysmal. My laptop gets 4 out of 5 bars from my laptop, my crappy phone gets full bars of wifi, and my tab gets... 1-2 bars. It fluxuates from which way I hold it if I get any reception in the bathroom at all.
The first unit I bought had a defective Wi-Fi but was able to exchange it where I bought it for a functioning unit. Unfortunately, the new one is not spectacular but it does indeed work around my home, upstairs, downstairs and outside though the signal is pretty poor.
Must be a short or overly shielded antenna. My Droid X cellphone has excellent reception and three laptops have excellent reception albeit with multiple internal antennas.
Need to find an A500 tear-down online to see what it looks like inside to see what the antenna arrangement is. If it's somehow modifiable then it can likely be improved though you'll have to take it apart
Or search for a USB Wi-Fi that is usable with Android and this device!
Sounds like a design flaw to me.

That's what I was thinking.
Here's a teardown...

I think this is where the Antenna is located...

I can't post links yet, so just replace the xxx with www
Yeah, that looks like it and it looks like it's strung out along the top in landscape (or right in portrait). It's a bit away from the edge of the case but not buried too deep. It looks like a standard antenna length as compared to a laptop. Interesting that it's weak. Maybe the WLAN card is just a crappy performer. I'll have to look up that part number and see what its specs are.
Seems someone found a fix.....

I just tested my a500 and HTC Rezound with wifi analyzer to compare and in the same location my rezound was at -40db and the a500 was at -65db so this is obviously a signicant issue.
Try setting the 11G channel number on your wireless router to something different. I had big problems with mine when the router was set to auto. I changed it to channel 6 and it started working great.
Not sure if the antenna is more sensitive to certain channels than others.

I doubt that is the issue since the channels are so close in frequency. Either way, neither my router nor access point are broadcasting on channel 11.
Things like the Fitbit Flex only work with Bluetooth 4.0 - Low Energy, so it was unavailable to Nexus 4 users to my knowledge. Anything else like this that people are going to pick up? I know there are other new Bluetooth features that were introduced or fixed, so feel free to piggyback on my statement.
Do you know what the new features are? I didn't think it was any more than the low energy aspect, but not sure about the new stuff that comes with it.
I ordered a bunch of Wimoto BLE sensors to monitor and instrument my house, car, and a few other things: http://igg.me/at/motes/x/1655370

fitbit needs to update their app so we can sync or someone needs to come up with a way to spoof the app to make the app access our BLE

Ordered one for my garage! LOL Also there's Button Trackr, little bigger than a quarter here in the states, utilizes BT4.0 and that is coming out in a few months as well. :good:
So being me ive done took my g2 apart To see how its built. Seeing as im right there with the antennas for the mobile radio, the wifi radio is the any way to make a mod to get better reception? Here at the house i have 0 to 1 bars signal but great lte speeds but where i work i have 2 to 5 bars but only get 3 g which all face it sprint has the meanest 3 g network may extend the wires out. More im pretty technical so it sounds like an expierment coming on i would apreciate any input on thiis one

interesting...
1.) an antenna with better gain than the one currently being used.
2.) Some type of signal amplifier between antenna and receiver with a filter to help cut out interference that may be amplified as well ( would also need an amp for transmitter as well )
With this one it would interesting if there would be a way to utilize the original hardware in the phone and via software, tweak it in order to push a stronger signal, as far as receiving goes not sure if that would be possible if there isn't some type of amp in there already. This may also raise issues though with starting to interfere with other mobile/wireless devices depending on how much the transmission signal was amplified.
3 Signal booster.
Probably the easiest route to go, simply acts like a tower, just on a smaller scale,
Well the antenna is in the back of the phone. Hypothetically the battery Cover. But what about a repeater but on a smaller scale of coarse. I built one to.do wifi in high school had about. 400 ft range though. Bu this was back in 02
That's basically what a signal booster Is doing for you. Completely external from the phone. Most use some type of directional antenna for comms back and forth with the tower, which feeds an amp. That amp has an Omni directional antenna on the backside in order to communicate with your device. Depending on what type of coverage you want(3g/lte) and what coverage area you are looking for depends on the price.
