4.2.2 Root Issue - Nexus 7 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Has anyone got a fool proof method to root nexus 7 on 4.2.2?
I have tried all the different methods, toolkits etc suggested but my laptop will not connect and sits there waiting for a connection.
When when I enable USB debugging I don't get the RSA authentication. I believe this is the root cause.
Any help would be greatly appreciated.
Cheers

Its not the toolkits or the methods that are the problem its the tablet. Try factory reset on the tablet, you're going to lose all the data when you boot loader unlock anyway
Sent from my Galaxy Nexus using xda app-developers app

Drivers are installed?
Sent from XDA app

factory reset did nothing, same issue
Which drivers are required? download the asus ones but said they are already up to date

I used Wug's toolkit to get the drivers

Hi, pda...
I'm not sure there is a 'foolproof' way to do anything, when it comes to matters of tech...
In my experience, technology often behaves capriciously and bloody awkwardly at times (as though it was demonically possessed by the 'imp of of the perverse') - and oft-times, some trivial, COMPLETELY NON-OBVIOUS reason will be the cause of much consternation and many hours of crying, cursing and swearing:crying:.
------------------------------
Still, having said all of that...
... are you sure you have the latest version of ADB installed?; this was updated by Google a few months ago and incorporates the new security/RSA measures you refer to.
You can get it from here...(along with Fastboot, ADB is part of the Android SDK)...
http://developer.android.com/sdk/index.html
...your need the ADT-bundle for your computer type, either Windows or Linux (click on 'Download for other Platforms' for a full list).
Download, unzip and install.
------------------------------
This is also worth a look...
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2233852
As rooting methods go, this is about as 'foolproof' as you're ever likely to get.
Good luck.
Rgrds,
Ged.

Thanks for the help guys.
Went through all the manual options for driver installation using WUG Root Toolkit.
Finally got it working using the PdaNet drivers and setting usb to use PTP.
Cheers

My nexus won't root!

I've tried eveything, the Nexus toolbox, ADB, and even Chainfire's auto root. I've managed to unlock my bootloader, but whenever it comes to rooting (depending on which way I try to root) the command prompt will stay at "Downloading boot.img" or "Sending Recovery (7806 kb)" until i either reboot my Nexus or close cmd. How can i root this damn device? I'm going insane! Thank you!

Thank you. But it still sticks on "Booting modified boot.img to enable running privileged commands..."
I've just noticed that My Computer/Windows Explorer isn't showing my Nexus when its connected as MTP. Could that be the problem? And if so, do you know how to fix it? thanks.

Try doing the whole process again from step one using the toolkit and install that will guide you step by step in installing the proper drivers and such. I usually do everything manually but I went into lazy mode and did everything just fine and with little time as well. :good:

Go to androidrootz.com and try his method. Worked for me on a Mac and I am not very computer savy. He also has windows version for rooting.

It's a long process but i ended up having to use a Linux virtual machine (luckily i had one for work anyway).
No matter what toolkit or manual step to install drivers, i couldn't get Win7 to detect the phone, however, attaching it in VmWare to an Ubuntu guest system worked straight away. I got the adb/fastboot files by following instructions in a thread here on XDA and was rooted in minutes
May be worth a shot
Toolkits are a waste of space. Do it manually, it's only like four steps and you will see exactly what is happening and where (if anywhere) you're going wrong.

I'm on my last legs

I've been trying to root my nexus for a few days and have had no luck i tried mskips tool kit and get this "rm failed for /system/bin/su no such file or directory" i have tried the [Guide] Ultimate Nexus 4 Root Guide and the win zip i have wont read the recovery-clockwork-6.0.3.1-mako.img says some thing about an iso and ive tried the zedomax youtube video way and my command window doesn't find the nexus root folder if anyone can help me i would appreciate it because i have given up all hope of getting this damn thing rooted
Why are you trying to open the recovery IMG with WinZip???
Step E from the first post in this thread, but read the entire first post to make sure you have the prerequisites, i.e. adb and the drivers, etc...

You'll have no problem figuring the rest out.

Could also just flash a custom ROM (most, if not all of them come pre-rooted with no effort). This isn't the first time this has happened either, but it's been a long time since it has happened...

+1 Follow this link wugs toolkit is 2nd2none!!!!!!! The hardest part is making sure the drivers are installed correctly(Just plug in your N4 with Debugging on and checked plug in to your computer and windows should install the ADB drivers). After making sure the ADB drivers are installed and USB debugging is on and checked, you might need to toggle "MTP" to "PTP" for Wugs toolkit to see it. I have an issue with my win7 PC not installing the drivers for MTP I don't know if that will be your case just a heads up. I can pull and push using ADB no problem I just need to check PTP for it to show up under ADB. Search YouTube for "Root Nexus 4 Wugfresh toolkit" GL

I agree,
Thou this one works.
do you have the android sdk installed? thats a must if you have a nexus you plan on modding. then follow the guide posted above to do it manually. it is really not hard and its good to know how to do some of the stuff if your rooted

Bought google nexus 4 lg, an error

When I try to install busybox, i get this..
there was a problem opening a shell with root access. this is either being caused by superuser/supersu or by a device that is inproperly rooted.
try removing superuser/supersu permissions, uninstalling this application reinstalling this application and then regranting superuser/supersu permissions for this application.
you can check your device to see if it is properly rooted b y downloading rootcheck from the android market.

More on this
I downloaded an app bootunlocker from store, i get bootloader status no root access..both lock and unlock buttons disabled.
I downloaded supersu from store..i get there is no su binary installed and supersu cannot install it. this is a problem!
if u just upgraed to android 4.3 you need to manually re-reoot- consult the relevant forums for your device.
For one, don't complain that you're too lazy to read through a post. People on here aren't here to babysit you, we're here to assist you in fixing your device, not fix it for you. I'll help you this time, but don't do this again, because this is ridiculous. If people always tell you step by step, you're never going to learn anything. Anyway, what you'll need to do is download Wug's Nexus 4 Toolkit (its a sticky in android development) and then click unlock boot loader + root, if the root part fails, go to chainfire.EU and download the latest flashable supersu zip and flash it.

for wug's nexus root toolkit..where i download it from? and question what different if i download quickly to my android or usb my android to my pc and i download thru my pc and add it to my android ?
You shouldn't need a terminal, if you go to the android development forum for the nexus 4, you should see Wug's Nexus Root Toolkit, it should have a link in it. Click it and follow the instructions to download. Install that then start it. It should have a button that says unlock device + root

[Q] Bricked Help Please!

Hi - I have had my Nexus for several months and its been great, using nightlies from CM and nothing too exotic.
Anyway - the latest nightly completely messed up my phone, can't make calls etc, so I tried to flash it back to a stable release - the problems were still there.
Then I tried another CM - and I entered the CM symbol on loop - so I knew something was wrong.
So I try for the complete factory image reinstall, I wipe EVERYTHING from the phone so all I have now is a blank phone.
So I can get into bootloader - I can get into recovery - but I can't do anything as there are no files on the phone (so recovery doesn't help).
I downloaded the Google Nexus 4 Toolkit - and when I try and connect the phone via USB - it can't even locate it - the program says "Waiting for device".
I'm a bit lost here lads! Any help would be greatly appreciated!!
I'm not sure but similar thing happened to me with my S3, I was bricked for days, something I tried was UNrooting the device, completely wiping it clean with stock firmware and doing few other specific things for my device, maybe try flashing a stock Rom to get it alive again and once your into your device then you can flash whatever else you want, another good thing to do is always make a backup of your rom Inc efs files, but try this now you may be able to get the stock firmware from here or online, hope it helps

I had the same issue I installed the latest Samsung drivers onto the pc still had no joy and I'm sure I found a stock firmware from a site saved it to my external card n tried flashing it via recovery, it was ok after that, mine was an md5 file, try that also if it doesn't work with the drives, try using Odin, hopefully it should work, sorry I can't be more precise as my experience was with a different device, hopefully you'll get it working, gather as much information you can about unbricking, there's some videos on YouTube you may find one for your same device

Nexus 4 No OS Installed TWRP

Guys I need your help.
I have Nexus 4 16GB pre owned. Bought it with Cyanogenmod 10.2 installed already and rooted. Then CM11 nightlies came and I installed it OTA but it seems that it has a lot of bugs so I rolled back to CM10. When I rolled back and rebooted, it does not come up (Google and Cyanogenmod logo only). I rebooted it to bootload mode, then recovery (TWRP) and accidentally wiped out everything including ROM/OS. I don't have that much knowledge in restoring my phone. I tried connecting it to PC (WinXP) and it does not recognize the device. Tried everything posted in different forums on how to connect my device to PC but to no avail. Cannot do USB debugging thing 'cause I can only utilize device's recovery mode (TWRP). I'm thinking now on having this device repaired by cellphone repair shop just to install OS.Anyone can help? Other forums look like too technical for me. Noob here, really.
