MDC was the release build. MDL is the OTA updated build.

MDL has different radio and kernel. Couple system apps are updated. Seems to make the interface a bit smoother and some peeps are saying their WiFi connections got stronger but I have yet to see that on mine.

I am trying to decide whether or not it is worth the effort to update to MJA without updating the bootloader per http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2277480. I am now running 4.2.2 pretty much stock with root. I would like to run the same way on MJA, but don't want to have the wifi problem and would like the option of running stock kernel. I have not been able to find what is causing the wifi problem. Are people taking the OTA experiencing the wifi problem? If I were to install the update as described in the link above without the KT kernel, what is the difference between that and the OTA, other than the bootloader? Why would it experience the wifi problem and not the OTA?
From what I have read you should be fine. I am trying to make the same decision. I'm basically stock mf9 rooted and tweaked.
My understanding is that we could Odin the mja with root and be like we are currently with all the new goodness. The disadvantage, if it is one, is that we could not go back to a mf9 rom due to now having the mja bootloader. I am trying to wait for one of these amazing devs to get a tar or zip together that would be a one flash setup allowing us have all of the new stuff minus the mja bootloader. I don't think I would ever go backwards but I don't want to destroy that option. I probably won't be able to wait much longer and wind up jumping through all the hoops to get the mja modem, 4.3, and keep the mf9 bootloader.
I am in no way a developer and please someone correct me if I am mistaken. I hope this helps you in some way.

I just did what you're thinking about doing and my experience has been great. I have the full MJA with out the bootloader. The phone runs stable and fast. No Wifi issues, LTE works, and clear phone calls.
It was more time-consuming than flashing a tar but I'm liking MJA a lot right now.

The KT kernel with the wifi fix. I didn't mess with the KTweaker settings.
I'm currently running MDC rooted stock with stock kernal. if i update using the thread posted by the OP. Will i be using MJA or MF9 bootloader...i've read throught the instructions and don't see anything about flashing the MF9 bootloader, or would that be the step which removes Knox

Before I started on the guide, I was on stock, rooted MF9. After the guide, I was MJA everything except the bootloader, which is MF9. As a result, Knox isn't triggered.
Since you're currently on MDC, perhaps you should start by flashing the OEM MF9 tar first through PC Odin.

Hi all,
My Google-fu is failing me and I'm not certain of the best route to take a Galaxy S4 SGH-I337 AT&T 4.2.2 MF3 (Rooted with Motochopper) up to the new AT&T 4.3 firmware.
Can anyone point me in the direction of a guide for doing this? Everything I'm reading seems like I'll have to sacrifice my root, flash to stock with Odin, and then wait for AT&T to re-release the OTA update to 4.3. Am I off base?
Motochopper cannot root MF3. We're you able to hold root when you upgraded and are hoping to keep root again?
At the moment yes you will have to sacrifice root. I did. Root keeper does not support android 4.3 and keeping with SuperSU does not work either.

My phone is still rooted at this moment, though I'm on 4.2.2. I haven't upgraded anything yet. I was hoping there was a custom rom or something I could flash to get to 4.3 and retain root.
I'm just gonna wait until a stock 4.3 rom comes out that supports safestrap so I can keep root

Since you are rooted with a custom recovery you CAN flash 4.3 now without losing root. Just use ShoStock-i MJ9 4.3http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2468860
Or VisionX MJ9 4.3 http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2391142
Or Deadly Venom MJ9 4.3 http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2503692
and POSSIBLY a couple other 4.3 Touchwiz firmwares that are found in the Android Development Section
These are all from he International MJ9 firmwares but to me are better than the ATT firmwares for 4.3. The ATT 4.3 removed the Data Toggle completely from the pulldown menu and now you have to go into settings each time to turn it on or off. Plus other changes that are solely LACKING compared to the international firmwares. I have tried two of the above and they are both great and the third from what I have read works great as well. They are all great devs. Try them out and I suggest using the Jeboo 3.0 kernel for best results.

I concur with RockRatt. Shostock-I is smooth. It is bundled with jeboos 3.0 kernel. Love it. Biased, though. I've been using Sho's roms since my/his s2 days..

If "mrpeters" is MF3 he can't and shouldn't try flashing a 4.3 rom cause our MF3 Safestrap don't support it at the moment.

I only gave the advice above because he said he is ROOTED WITH MOTOCHOPPER ON MF3. As we know MF3 cannot be rooted with motochopper. So I was guessing that he rooted while on MDL or MDB with motochopper and used a ROM to upgrade to MF3.
So unless he is/was mistaken with those comments and he meant to say rooted on MF3 with safestrap then I would of told him to look at the safestrap threads.
Hopefully he clears things up with that as I WON'T want to give him Bad Advice.

My phone was not MF3 stock. It got upgraded sometime after I rooted. To be completely honest, I'm not sure how. Kies maybe?
All I know is I still have root If I have to wait where I'm at, no big deal!

well my touch screen has stopped working, so now this phone gets to go back to AT&T for repairs.
whats the best way to remove root and factory default it?
sorry to bump an old thread, but I wanted to see if anything had changed so I could upgrade from my rooted 4.2.2 I337UCUAMF3 to one of the newer OS versions that are out. This phone was a warranty replacement, but I had no trouble rooting it with Motochopper when I got it so I don't think it came stock with MF3, but its been 6 months so I can't say for certain.

You could flash the md3 tar and return it to stock. Then let out update itself. You'll lose root and you'll want to read some of the threads on the general section dealing with mk2 and nb1 before you do so so you know what you're getting in to

10-4. I don't want to lose root, so that's key. I should have clarified that. I use too many apps (LightFlow, NoBloat, Titanium, etc.) that I wouldn't want to give up.

You could flash 4.3 MK2 with odin then root with saferoot.
The 4.3 tar can be found here http://d-h.st/wH3 The pit here http://d-h.st/5gz

My MDL updated itself when I went back to stock and forgot to disable OTA. Now that I'm locked into TW, is there a reason NOT to update to MK2? I know that it will install KNOX but with saferoot and safestrap, I'll have the same functionality of my rooted MF3?

Where can I find a Pre-rooted Deodexed MJ7 Rom for N9005 ?
DeJemBeY had MJ6, - Haven't seen one for MJ7 yet(?) However, there are one or two ways to root - I used CF-AutoRoot after I had some issues with MJ6 - I updated via KIES and just ran it. I was KNOX'd when I ran the modded MJ6 firmware.

Actually Its not the Root I'm after. I need an untouched Stock DEODEXED Rom.
Have a peek here > http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2461929
While it may not be on OP, there may be some links further in the thread, I lost track a while ago I'm afraid.
DeJemBey is uploading it right now. Check his thread in the development section.

Most Roms are MJA or MK2 now as devs always stay on top of the latest updates. Download stock rooted MF9 and debloat it yourself. I can't remember which ROM might still be on MF9,

i have done the domestic lock so i thought it was good to stay on mf9 with mdc modem. thought about flashing modem back to mf9 as the modem will still stay unlocked but if i goto mja or mk2 i think i loose the unlock carrier mod and plus how do you all deal with knox?
figured most people would still want to stay on a firmware you could downgrade when you want and flash what you want without to much trouble
you think i should stay on mf9 considering my needs or is mja and mk2 ok to upgrade to now?
Hello everyone! I have been checking this forum for quite some time now and I wanted to update my phone to NAE. Right now I am on MDC bootloader and I wanted to know if there is any advantage in updating to MF9. Should I leave it on MDC?
I am using a MJA Rom with MDC bootloader.
Thanks in advance and great community btw!

Thanks bro, I actually read all that and downloaded everything I need to update to NAE. I just wanted to know if there was any difference or benefits between MDC and MF9 bootloaders before updating.
Same boat here. I'm actually on mf9 but wanted to make sure before I do anything. I can keep mf9 bl and then update everything else. I don't want to assume there's no downfall to doing this as well... You know the saying about assuming and all that. Otherwise I'd just as well stay on mf9 everything which is working perfectly.

My bootloader = MF9
Baseband = NAE
ROM/PDA = MK2
I'm on an MF9 bootloader with NAE baseband/modem and run some 4.4.x AOSP/CM ROMs and have tried a couple TW 4.4s too. Usually try and give them a good workout, but just find, for me only mind you, that they are not ready for prime time.
The nature of my phone use takes me back to my rocksolid MK2 based TW ROM for daily driver.
If you follow the OPs instuctions AND read through the entire follow-up posts for a particular ROM you will get an uderstanding of issues and fixes or resolutions. I think it's completely inane to flash something, then complain about an issue that has been already brought up multiple times.
If you try something and KNOW what you're getting into you might find something that works for you.
Good luck.
