can't seem to flash rome - Nexus 4 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hey guys, I've been having some trouble trying out the cm 10.1.0 RC2 rom on my nexus 4.I have it rooted and currently run stock rom with franco kernel. I have all the files needed, transferred it to the partition, then go into cwm recovery and when I try to flash the zip, it aborts at installation with the dead android and at the top it always says "apply update from .zip fil on SD". I've tried many times but I'm stuck atm. I am hoping someone with experience can help me and hopefully my the morning I can get it working. Thanks for your help, I'm learning as I go along.
Edit: I'm running ClockworkMod Recovery v6.0.3.1

Bad download?

In recovery are you choosing "Apply update.zip from sdcard" ?
If thats the case you are flashing it incorrectly. You must choose "Install zip from sd card".

Sounds like the problem to me.

Rome wasn't built in a day, thus it will not be flashed in a day.
No but seriously, don't choose apply update.zip from sdcard. Unless you rename your rom to update.zip.

I apologize for the title typo. But to the others responding thanks for your help. I've downloaded the ROM straight off get.cm and in recovery I only select install from SD not apply update, so I'm not sure why it's saying that... I'll give it another shot
Sent from my Nexus 4 using xda app-developers app
EDIT: So I've tried re-downloading and its still not working somehow. I am choosing to install zip from sd card. But after aborting the installation, it'll always say apply update from zip at the top.
I even tried doing an auto-flash with the roms found on rom manager and once in recovery it still aborts installation. I don't understand what could be the problem, can anyone help?

Well that's strange. Do you have any place ai can contact you directly to help you? Like google plus or something?

Try TWRP instead of cwm and see if that allows you to correctly flash the rom.

Hey thanks a lot for your concern, I actually managed to get it to work however, this time I used my phone directly to download the zip files. Before I would get the zip files from the computer and transfer the file by drag and drop using android file transfer. I'm guessing the problem must be around there because I have downloaded and transfered the file many times through my computer.
But either way, at least I know I can download it directly onto my phone and have it work. I'm loving the CM 10.1.0 RC2 now. Though I can't seem to change the cpu freq. they keeping going back to their default values.

Need Help on Manual Recovery Screens Clockwork Mod

Got Rom Premium, CWM, and AmonRa on N1.
Playing and trying to learn about the manual (green) recovery screens.
Q1: What is the Apply Update:Update.Zip for?
Q2: When in those screens, no buttons I try can take me back to previous screen, like vol- does in AmonRa.
Thanks for any help and I read dozens of search results without really understanding Apply Update and no luck on going back on screens.
I am not expert yet, so please keep replies at a for dummy level.
Ken
If your using Clockword Recovery then Ill help ya out.
1: Thats used if you have the rom or update on the root of your sd card and have it named update.zip. This is how we used to flash roms on the old recovery menus on the G1, they just left it in. Now you can just search your sd card for the rom you want.
2: The power buttom will go back, and if your on the main screen the power button will turn off the display to save power.
What do you mean when you say manual recovery screen? Do you mean the stock recovery or are you talking about a custom? With the stock recovery it will only install files named update.zip signed with google keys. If you are talking about a custom recovery that means that it will search for a file named update.zip and flash that.
Thanks a lot,
1. I thought the zip wasn't needed anymore based on my research.
2. Got it, I swore I tried that.
When on main screen how do you exit it?

1: It isn't, they kind of just left it in as a fast way of flashing without having to look for it.
2: Just hit the reboot option at the top.
One more question, at least for now.
Is going back and forth between recoveries, as easy as just "flashing alternate recovery" from that selection. I.E. CWM to AmonRa and vice versa?
Your help is greatly appreciated

Yup. Tho id recommend Clockwork, since im a little bias.
And no prob, I was an android noob at one time.
Ninja Edit:
A warning tho, if you use nandroid, the 2 recoveries don't play nice with each others nandroids.
Thanks McFroger3,
I like what CWM offers just heard some problems with it and AmonRa is rock solid, but more manual and doesn't allow for quick flashes of the CM6 nightlies I am on.

I am just talking about the green screens where you do your backup/restores, flash roms etc. Bad semantics on my part. It's where you go when you select Reboot into Recovery on the CWM main screen.
I think I am good to go,
Thanks,

Right, I am assuming you are talking about Backup with CWM, restore with CWM and same for AmonRa.

Yea, if you back up with CWM, and try to restore with Amon, you will run into issues lol.
Thanks Again for the heads up,
I read that during my research to solve these issues which you quickly helped me with. I won't mix the two. If CWM works well for me, I will use it most if not all of the time. I got into this helping new rooters on the Nexus One forum when most used 1 click to root and started using Rom Mangager and CWM.
Got to call it a day!
Thanks,
Ken
OK,
I want CWM Recovery to work for me. I flashed the latest nightly from the list in ROM Manager. Followed all prompts and allowed the Google Addons to be downloaded also. OK'd backup. The backup and nightly went fined. But, the gapps hung on installing. Had to pull battery, reboot, and restore to previous backup. All Ok now, but it bothers me and not sure if I want to try again. Have been flashing roms, gapps etc with AmomRa for awhile.
Did I miss something? CWM did all the choosing of what to dl and flash. Something different on gapps? It was hdpi-frf91-2-signed.zip. I know that is not the latest. Latest is frf91-UP. Don't know if that matters.
If I have to copy that to sd and flash, what is the procedure? If I select the latest nightly, I have to tell CWM I don't want the gapps, then does it give me that opportunity to grab the gapps zip from sd card before it flashes the nightly. If not, I have no market on phone to dl anything like Titanium to get phone running.
What am I mising?
I copied latest gapps zip to sd card, did not rename. It has .zip on end. Playing around I selected Install Rom from SD Card and found the zip. Clicked on it. Options under Install Queue screen: Ok or Add Zip. Do I zip since it has one. And this allowing me to queue it and go back and add another rom. Didn't see those choices when I did the procedure from the Download Rom choice on Rom manager main screen.
Easier question may be:
If I want to flash latest nightly and a gapps zip I copied to sd card, the latest. What is the procedure?
It seems CWM won't let me install latest nightly without installing gapps, not the latest. Don't know if that is my problem.
Seems I would need to flash latest nightly again and if ok, just flash latest gapps, no wipe, over the just installed nightly.
And if gapps don't install, I can go back and flash my latest gapps from the sd card.
Any thoughts.
Had to flash my latest .zip fromsd card after the gapps attached to lastest nightly failed to install again.

Fresh Start

So i had to Odin back to stock because in whatever rom i used i wouldnt get vibration for text messages. This worked fine and i flashed back to eugenes stock jk2 that was prerooted. Now i need to install new roms again and im having trouble. I have rom manager installed and superuser was already there. I got the rom on the sd card (tried with multiple roms), but when i go to flash the roms it fails because it can't verify the signature. Even when i go to fix permissions and reboot my phone like rommanager tells me to it cant flash a new rom. On the other roms i had i would just go to advanced options in recovery and disable verification checks but with the stock recovery i cant do this. So my main question is why isnt this option in cwm recovery and how can i get it there so i can start getting roms again. Thanks for anyone who takes the time to read this...
Make sure that you have CWM recovery flashed onto your phone using odin. Also make sure that whatever rom you install is on agreement with your software version.

yea maybe i need to try one of eugenes roms because its his froyo version? i have cwm because i installed it through rom manager (well at least i think i have it)

Are you putting the rom on the internal memory?
Yea i copied it to the iternal sd, i see it on the internal sd, but the only way to reflash it is to rename it update.zip becauae all i can do is reinstall system packages
You have to download cwmrecovery, plug your phone in while in download mode and put cwmrecovery onto your phone. Just installing rom manager doesn't cut it and trying to flash anything will give the exact errors you're talking about.

You put the rom Just on the internal sd card not any folders right?
its doesent matter at least for me if the rom is right there or in a folder no difference just file called update.zip need to be there (not in the folder )
and no ! u cant flash clockwork recovry thru odin ! loL both of these program u mentioned are intended to flash roms not to be flashed as rom p u can flash in clockwork recovery if the rome is made for it which would be packed with .zip file if its odin file it would be .tar not every rom is flashable thru odin or clockwork depends how devs made it

Yea it was on the internal sd, i mean iv probably flashed 20 different roms and i know how to move them between different file folders and how to access them ect... The only problem is basically that im stuck in stock which has a different recovery

Here is the update.zip that will flash you into clockwork from stock recovery. Put this on your phone's internal sd, reboot to recovery, and hit "reinstall packages". If your phone reboots to stock recovery again, hit reinstall packages again and the second time it should put you right into Clockwork Recovery. Good Luck.

What rom are you currently running, still on Eugene's JK2? If you Odin'd a stock file, you may have 2e recovery, not the modded 3e. Check this thread, it may help you out with the stock recovery issue. In fact untermensch mentions this kind of issue specifically in the OP. http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=833423

Your wording is pretty hard to understand, but I seem to detect a hint of sarcasm. You really can't get angry for not receiving a response in only 13 minutes. There are plenty of people here who would have helped you out, but when you post at 1:19am EDT, there isn't a lot of traffic on the forum...
You don't need to rename anything. Please download the latest version of ROM manager from market and then download this CWM from here and follow the instructions well. After that, when you flash something, anything, do not do 'apply update from sdcard', instead directly select the zip files from sdcard by rebooting into recovery and then look for the zip file by going to 'install zip from sdcard - choose zip from sdcard' and then look for specific zip file and then select/install it.

It was my understanding that with CWM 3.0.2.4, the method you linked to was no longer necessary and considered outdated. The newest version can flash both Gingerbread and Froyo ROMs, and doesn't have the charging bug.

[Q] Continuum Kernal Issues - I think

So I got my continuum 3 weeks ago, first Droid phone. Decided to root, took me about 5 hours finally figured it out using SuperOneClick.
Wanted to check out some custom ROM's so I plugged my USB cable in and transfered the .zip file to my sd card and booted into cwr and tried to install the .zip from the sd card and rebooted, nothing was different or had changed. Did that a few times and realized that I hadn't wiped user data or cache or delvik so I did that all in the cwr and installed to .zip rom and rebooted.
This time when I rebooted a few things were different. All of my apps were in alphabetical order, the home screen was back to stock except for my background was one I had just installed. My contacts were gone (thank God I backed them up).
So I rebooted again.... hung at Samsung logo....
I had also put the Peanut Butter Jelly time kernal on my sd card out of luck I installed that and rebooted. This time everything was the same as my previous horror boot except all of my apps that were set to run on boot fc'ed and all of the other apps that I have are just icons. None of them open or they do and fc. Market will not open. My phone is a phone and a camera and the browser works.
I am very new to droid but learn quickly. I cannot post on the continuum dev threads because I am a noob. Hopefully one of the continuum devs will see this and know what to do to help.
Thanks a ton, I do not mind donating for help.
You said that you wiped user data?
That would remove all of your data, including your applications...
Your apps are toast, but your phone is not...
If you made a backup before you flashed (which you are supposed to xP) , then you can easily restore your apps then...
But if you didn't, then go back into recovery and do a full wipe... When you boot up, you should be back to the original state..
If not, then i am going to have to have you flash one of our rom zips... But i really dont think it'll come to that xP

I made a backup and when I try to load it it says checking for md5 sums then gives me an error that it can't mount (unmount) the "/system".
So if I go back to recovery and wipe everything and reboot that should return me back to stock??
I don't care about the apps I dled I can always get those back but I can't even open market it fc everytime, no way to re-dl it.
1. what rom have you/are trying to install?
2. how are you installing the rom? you can't just go into cwr and click "apply sdcard:update.zip". you have to go to "install zip from sdcard", then go to "choose zip from sdcard", and then find the rom you put on your sdcard and select it. make sure you're flashing the rom file, not the cwr file because they are both named "update.zip". to make sure you're flashing the right file i would put cwr in the root of your sdcard and the rom file in some random folder.
3. did you install voodoo or novoodoo? and if you correctly installed either, the boot up video should be messed up when you turn on your phone. did you make sure the peanutbutta jelly time kernel was exclusively for the continuum, and you didn't accidently flash a kernel for some other phone?
4. if you truly did install the correct peanutbutta jelly time kernel, i would recommend flashing back to the original kernel (let me know if you need it). if you installed voodoo, you'll need to put a blank file in /sdcard/voodoo/ named "disable-lagfix"

1. I was trying to install the super clean
2. I was trying to install from zip on sd card then selecting the sc_cont.zip I believe it is called
3. I had both voodoo and no voodoo, with no voodoo I had no bootani's with voodoo it was the factory bootani but distorted.
4. I just tried the original kernal and system from http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=967165 and now my phone's bootani is stock stock but after the verizon screen my phone turns off.
So now my phone is bricked again. I tried going back to pbj (peanut butta jelly) voodoo kernal and the same distorted bootani comes up then the phone turns off. I can get into crm but that appears to be all I can do.
Is there a different place to get the stock kernal or is the link I posted the right one.
I would really like my phone back to stock and root again. But first things first... get it to boot to a phone.
Forgot something, when I attempt to boot into crm the lady comes on and says "Convert system partition, system is not available" Then it sits and the weird lines from voodoo and the bootani from voodoo. If i could get into "phone" I could create the file you are saying but the phone turns off after that. Back to boot like a loop.
Instead of creating a super large thread, how about you just hop into the IRC, and i will try my best... i have a couple ideas to try...

[Q] Can't seem to install ZIPs from CWM Recovery Anymore

Hi All,
I have been trying a few different ROMs out over the last day, as I've found CM11 to be brutally unstable, and I had settled on FoxHound, except it decided to completely lock out my mobile data, so I had to try something else.
I went to install Infamous to give it a whirl, and when I click on Install Zip > Install Zip from /extsdcard > picked .zip from the list, CWM Recovery just flashes a black screen, and returns to the main menu.
This happens regardless of which zip file I use, I've rebooted several times including pulling the battery, and had no success.
I was able to restore a rooted stock backup and get my phone at least working again, but I'm curious to know if anyone has an idea why CWM is suddenly acting so strange?
Thanks,
MC

Also match up md5s with the developers download site.
