[Q] Apps Ok to Remove - Sprint Samsung Galaxy S 4 Q&A, Help & Troubleshoot

Currently running ForceRom 1.1 with MDL and custom kernel without any problems or nagging notifications. Just curious if its safe to remove Google Play Music and Voicemail. I see that both are always running but I never will use. I use instead and heavily rely on GoogleVoice and use default Music Player. Thanks.

[Q] Google music force close issues

I have been having a hard time with the google music app. It will not stream music, and force closes when I attempt to start streaming. I have tried many reboot options, as well as the uninstall reinstall trick. The funny thing is that after the uninstall, it streamed a single song before force closing. I am also running liberty .9. So basically I am asking if anyone else has this problem, a solution, or input. Thanks.

I had the same problem on stock gingerbread. I ended up wiping phone and reloading entire os last night to fix it. Nothing else I tried cured it. I thought I had read that the problem on liberty was that it was blocking ads and that prevented music from working, there was a setting that would turn them back on and fix the issue. But since I dint use liberty, I'm not positive.
google music crashed a lot on me at first but I was running gingerbread.596 and using equalizer.
now I'm running google music with
cyanogenmod and dsp manager with no more fc issues.
DX+CM7
As the other guy said, reenable adds and see if it works.
I run ad free and it works fine

so i found this while having the same issue on my nexus s 4g with bugless beast gpa19.
i use rom toolbox to block ads. I also have rom toolbox blocking 'casinos'. disabling this function fixed force close problems with google music.
I had same issue on liberty gb .9 nothing you can do to fix it, doesnt seem to work well with .596
I sbf to .602/.605 and flashed liberty x 3 and it works flawlessly. Need to be on .602, thats what solved my issue
same issue fixed on Droid Razr RazrX V1.2
had the same issue as you guys, i uninstalled all apps that android market split into (google play, music, books and movies). the apps i could not uninstall i removed the updates after forcing them to close in app manager. i rebooted the device, logged into marketplace and let it reinstall the new apps again, had to manually reinstall the music app because it didn't do it on it's own, i reinstalled it by going to my apps in Google play, it was at the bottom of the list. i'm rockin' a safe-strapped Motorola Droid Razr rooted with RazrX V1.2. Everything is working properly now. BTW this is my first post on XDA! hope it helps someone

always running service: Media > DownloadService

hi guys, I always see Media > DownloadService in running apps.. why it is running all the time? and, being running all the time, is it supposed to drain my battery faster?
I have always lived with that, but if it drains my battery faster I would like to get rid of it..
EDIT: it seems to me it is related to GMAIL.. in fact, after a reinstall, download service process was not there until I started gmail for the first time.. now it is always there again..
can you guys using gmail confirm you have media download service always running?
and people who has not gmail installed can confirm they don't see that process always running? thanks!

hi guys, just a question.. is that normal that I always see maps in running apps? I use maps once per month or even less, so why it should be running all the time? (maps > PrefetcherService)
and, being running all the time, is it supposed to drain my battery faster?
I have always lived with that, but if it drains my battery faster I would like to get rid of it..
the same happens also for "media" (media > DownlodService..... what is that? can I remove it?) and google play music (MusicPlaybackService)
it is really annoying for me to see them always running even when I am not using them....
any suggestion? thanks in advance!!

It happens with me too. I used Greenify and it stopped appearing until the 4.1.6 play store update. Now maps opens automatically almost every 2 minutes. You might not get a significant change in battery life. You can remove google play music though. I don't know about the media download service, might be related to browser or google play music (I recommend not removing it).
thanks for the answer. I tried greenify too and it seems to correctly remove maps here.. (I too have play store 4.1.6, will update to 4.1.10 in a short time btw )
about play music.. I use it, so I can't remove it! btw I greenified it too, so it shouldn't bother anymore
so the only pending problems are media service and also play store (pendingnotification service) that is appearing sometimes in running apps.. unfortunately they are system apps so I can not greenify them
The pendingnotification service might have appeared because of the option to notify you of an update. And yes, the pro version has that feature of hibernating system apps (but its experimental) and god knows what might happen if you do.
of course I disabled the notification and auto update via WiFi options and rebooted but the service kept appearing in running apps sometimes..
as x the media running service, it seems I fixed it removing mediauploader.apk it has not appeared again so far after removing that package!
so all seems good now thanks all!

EDIT: media downloadservice is back again so it was not related to mediauploader... what the hell can be that??
it seems to me it appeared after running gmail for the first time.. but I will have to confirm that after some more investigations..
after some more attempts, i found out the process: media > DownlodService is related to both gapps and Downloadprovider.apk
if I remove Downloadprovider.apk, that process doesn't appear anymore, but I get gapps FC's (and very probably will not be possible to download anymore things from the browser and/or play store)
so in conclusion it seems to me we have to live with that process running, and that is not possible to really get rid of it safely..
Yup, made that mistake of deleting Downloadservice.apk... Drove me nuts with FCs
so nobody could get rid of that process? you too have it always running?

:silly: Strangely, no, its not always running for me.
It seems to run when I download something in a browser and then disappears after 15 minutes or so

thanks
it seems to me after I installed latest maps 7.x the media > download process is not appearing anymore in running processes.. maybe it was related to sh*tty maps??? :fingers-crossed: :fingers-crossed:

Stock 4.3 without gapps?

Hey guys was just wondering if theres any images of the stock 4.3 rom without gapps. I only use play store everything else like G+, Hangouts, Google Books, Music, Magazines, Chrome, Keep, Maps etc i dont use so was wondering if theres a stock image about without the gapps to save me uninstalling the apps each time. If not is it best just to remove them from system/apps or just use Titanium and uninstall, cheers.
No, and you're actually better off freezing those apps rather than uninstalling. The end result of both is exactly the same, but you at least have the option of defrosting them later down the road.
Ah thanks and yea its probs for the best could always unfreeze if i run into problems. Is disabling them the same as freezing them with titanium?.

For all practical intents and purposes, yes. I've personally never had problems flat out uninstalling the apps, but if you ever want to take an OTA, it'll cause a realm of hurt.

[Q] installing talk

i pretty much rooted my fone and installed jellybeans almost exclusevely so i could get rid of hangouts and get back gtalk. after uninstalling hangouts in jellybeans and installing talk it refuses to sign in, Is there anything im missing?
sorry to bump but this is driving me crazy. anyone go through this?
I thought they killed gtalk altogether. Not sure if there's any way of making that work anymore. Maybe a third party app? That would be your best bet.

Least bloated ROM

I want to use my Nexus 7 as an e-reader only, running Aldiko. I've rooted it & removed some bloat. The only things I want are
1. Aldiko
2. Battery app
3. ES File Explorer
4. Chrome (for emergencies)
4. Play Store (for updating Aldiko/battery/ES Explorer apps easily)
Will putting a a custom ROM on it remove more bloat? I want to get rid of as many stock apps as I can.
Thank You
Mrs Hedgehog
I would suggest Chroma ^^ quite barebones even with minimal gapps
CM11

why not CM11. Also use Servicely and disable whatever you don't want!

I tried a few over the last 48hrs now including CM11 & I really don't like them to much junk.
Only one I liked was SlimRom's SlimBean based on the 4.1.2 build but I can't get/don't know how to get google play store running with it. It's the only thing I don't like about it & means I can't use it. Otherwise it's perfect. I think not getting play store on it is a 'me' problem rather than a Slimbean problem. Because I never even knew how to put a ROM on my device before I posted this thread.
You're welcome! The battery life is pretty good as well ^^
