[Q] Question for you Galaxy S4 owners - Galaxy S 4 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

I currently have the Droid DNA, and I'm thinking about selling it and upgrading to the Galaxy S4 once Verizon releases it. The last Samsung phone I had was the Galaxy S II on Sprint. (epic 4g touch) and it used to do one thing that REALLY irritated me. I like having my phone's brightness all the way up. It just looks better imo. Especially on an LED screen. But the S II would ALWAYS turn the brightness down to avoid "overheating". It did this all the time, whether or not the phone was actually hot.
I was wondering if the S4 does the same thing? If so, is there a way to turn it off with or without rooting it? That could be the deciding factor for me...

[Q] Selling my Galaxy Tab 7.7 for a Galaxy Note

I am selling my Galaxy Tab 7.7.
1. Its a little too big to fit nicely in my pockets (that extra .7 was the difference as the original Tab 7 fit better.
2. There is very little development going on for the 7.7
3. I have the international version bought off of Negri that does not have an IR blaster. This was actually a big selling point for me as I have a smart home system that is compatible with this.
I am going to switch to the Galaxy Note.
1. It will fit nicely in my pocket.
2. There are already several ICS Roms available for it.
3. No IR Blaster :-(
My question is how much is the International 7.7 selling for? More importantly what carriers is it compatible with? That is the most important question which carriers can use the 7.7 that I bought off of Negri?
You want some galaxy Note? Where do you live? Country?

That's funny. I just bought a new 7.7 to go along WITH my Note. I love them both. I guess I'm just a sucker for AMOLED displays.
Sent from my GT-P6810 using XDA Premium HD app
I also have both, and if someone made me choose I'd lean towards keeping the Note over the 7.7. But, that's mainly because I have a new iPad at home.
Me too, i also have New ipad, Note and Thema 7.7
The only thing i found **** is The horryble scrolling in Facebook and dolphin Browser:-(

The Galaxy Note is perfect for those people who just want or can only afford one device. The combination of the large high resolution screen and S-Pen allows it to work well as Tablet and it is portable enough to be used as a mobile phone. If I had to choose between the Note and 7.7 for my only device then I would get the Note.
I bought both and returned the note
This topic caught my eye as just today I returned the note after using it only for a week. I have had the galaxy tab 7.7 for 2 months now. I have the galaxy nexus as my phone.
The reason I decided to purchase the galaxy note:
1) Note taking
2) More portable yet bigger screen than most phones
What I liked during my trial:
1) Ability to write out my notes in the pen memo app
2) More portable than any other tablet
3) Display was quite good (yet not without fault, see below).
4) It was super fast in use. Apps seemed to install and launch much faster than any android device I have ever owned. The browser was silky smooth (apparently stick browser was optimized by samsung). No stutter or lag anywhere. Even with the same CPU, GPU and RAM specs galaxy tab 7.7 feels slower by a bit for the same tasks (due to honeycomb).
The reason I decided to return the galaxy note:
1) Black wallpaper when viewed in dark shows grey banding. This ruins the perception of the Super AMOLED display which is supposed to especially shine for black color due to infinite contrast. This has been widely reported. However I won't say that just this reason should sway you away from it, as the display otherwise is on par with the galaxy tab 7.7 although slightly less bright.
Galaxy tab 7.7 doesn't have this issue.
2) Galaxy note screen is big but not that much bigger than my galaxy nexus screen (5.3" vs. 4.65"). Screen feels small when compared to other tablets. Can't install tablet format of apps, so that negates the slightly larger screen.(There are ROMs available to make it act like a tablet, but you end up with faulty pen support and really small icons).
3) The micro-SD card slot access requires you to take out the battery. Galaxy tab 7.7 has an exposed slot which is very convenient.
I used galaxy note as a tablet (no SIM card) and decided that it didn't offer much beyond what my galaxy nexus already did screen space and app-wise although the pen functionality was extremely appealing. The smoothness and maturity of ICS was lacking and I didn't want to even risk losing the pen functionality by installing some custom ROMs.
Hope this helps with your decision.

I have an iPad as well which is my primary tablet. The Note is going to be my primary phone.
I've had both the 7.7 and Note (both International versions before their US counterparts were released).
I long for the day Samsung and VZW reach a deal on the Note or Note2.
I used straight talk for my Int'l Note and it was good, but I missed 4G speeds.
The thing I find with all my devices is I like development. I really should learn how b/c if a device doesn't have development I get bored quickly.
My razr is amazing so far even with it's locked bootloaders, but OMG the dev work on the Note is second to none it seems. (At least for the international version).
The Note, the longer I haven't had it the more I miss it. It was speedy, great support/development, and could double up as both a phone and tablet.
The 7.7 I haven't missed one bit since I sold it. It was a 6810 (wi-fi) and virtually no development going on at all for the 7.7, especially the wi-fi version. Secondly, it just didn't impress me the way the original Galaxy Tab or 10.1 did. <<<I contribute a lot of that to lack of development and being stuck with stock crappy honeycomb.
OP, I think you will be much happier with the Note than the 7.7, but that's just my opinion. I really miss mine but I just can't bring myself to give up two grandfathered unlimited data plans on VZW.
UPDATE: Verizon will be discontinuing the unlimitted plan for all

Verzion will be cancelling the grandfathered unlimitted plans. The only way you will b e ablet to keep it is if you pay full price for all your phone upgrades or stay with the phone you currently have.
I have your same exact problem!!!
Galaxy tab 7 fits in back pockets while 7.7 dont... but i just think im not putting that in my pockets... that tab is really good! I love it.

Should i buy this phone?

hey all, im thinking of getting either a galaxy s3, the htc one x or the galaxy note.
now iv read that the htc one x has serious overheating issues so im not going to bother with that now. so that leaves me with either the galaxy s3 or the galaxy note.
some reports are saying the galaxy s3 has heat issues too but nothing certain.
question is, does the galaxy note have any issues that i should be aware off? if its prone to overheat or failures of other kinds then please let me know and i will not bother to purchase it.
thanks all.

Well there is the emmc issue, which basiccly means if your wipe/factory reset your devices while on a stock ICS rom it can brick your device, other than that no issues really
S3 has the best hardware, fastest CPU and probably the biggest life span since it's newest.
Note has big, amazing screen, great hardware and amazing battery life.
One X has terrible battery life, can't replace battery, no sd card and not that great performance for a quad-core device.
I just got my s3 and have to say speed wise it leaves the note well behind no lag and very smooth overall.
However.
It feels like a toy compared to the note the screen is not all that on the s3 and the note feels a better quality device.
Ive played with the s3 for a bit and now its just sittig there for work duties. the note deffo jas the edge in my books

I'd get the s3. Who knows if Samsung is going to update the note anymore beyond ics... also the s3 has a better processor, it also has a better camera and is certainly more future proof. I'm actually thinking of dumping my own note for the s3, buying two. One for me and one for my partner. I played with it in the store and boy does that device fly. It's just so fast and it seems like it's a lagless device. The note isn't a bad device. But we're talking about a 2011 device vs a 2012 device. Also the new flagship device. I really hope Samsung does keep updating the note because this device is awesome as it has an awesome screen and the pen which originally I found useless but then I started to use it and it's grown on me to the point where I'm not sure I'll be able to survive without it. Haha. How about that? Lol.

really it depends if the s-pen matters to you or not.
if it doesn't, then just go for the latest and greatest device.

Yes I agree about the lag and smoothness; but only if we're talking about stock roms. Flash your note with a custom rom (CM9), and you won't find a difference plus you will have a wonderful big screen:good:
very tempted with the note, the s3 does seem like the logical choice since its newer has faster tech in it but the s3 forums seem to be complaining about overheating issues. im just not sure if i want to risk going with the s3 for those reasons. iv used the s3 in tescos and it is truly a fast device. im also considering getting a google nexus 7 so not sure if the galaxy note is ideal for me. although it does look amazing since the screen is so big.
main thing is that im worried about the reliability of these devices. if there were no reports of overheating of the galaxy s3 then that would have been my first choice.

Skipping the gs4 , keeping the Note II

So after having a good look at the specs and reviews of the gs4 ive come to the conclusion that in many ways moving to the gs4 would be a downgrade from what I already have. After all, the note 2 has a bigger battery, bigger screen, SPen the things that really matter.
I have a 4200mah battery which keeps my note II operational for 2 days heavy usage, everything on, screen on full brightness. 4g isnt really cheap enough to be worthwhile in the UK, and if im not mistaken , there is a 4g version of the note II anyway which will be cheaper than the s4. Ive read that the s4 has dissapointing battery life, something which is crucial to busy men should as myself.
In a way in think that the note II is the pinnacle of perfection for current samsung smartphones ( and all other smartphones period) This is somewhat a double edged sword for samsung as it seems the note line is going canabilise their s line ( reviews of the gs4 seem quite luke warm)

Ive got the Note II myself in titanium grey and absolutely love it and let me be honest here I'll rather it over a S4 any day, I'm not saying the S4 is a bad phone definitely not and I'm sure alot will prefer it over the Note II and vice versa. Ok the S4 has the 1080 p display but to me the screen on the Note II is just as good if not better due to its gorgeous size which I love. Plus the functionality of the S pen like what you said. Ohh and battery life on this thing is purely amazing

Yup. S4 is a nice phone but it can't even offer much to anyone who already has an s3, let alone a note 2. It's really getting to the same point as personal computers - advancements are still happening but they aren't as frequent and drastic as they once were. Heck even the venerable s2 is still a solid performer when you stack it up against the latest phones and it's two years old now.

I still have a s2 lying around somewhere as a back up, runs jellybean beatifully. Its true raw computing specs are becoming more and more irrelevant , and I heard the note II will get some s4 features anyway.
Very interested in what the note III has to offer however.

For me personally, S4 is a downgrade in every respect. I have perfectly adequate specs even if I plant to underclock my N2, the battery life is the best etc. And unless I'm going crazy, I find N2 screen significantly better to S4 (I don't put my screen under my microscope anyways )
Personal preference, but as I've said countless time before, if you bought Note 2 like I did for the size, battery life and S Pen, no way in hell is S4 an upgrade. Like S4 though, would love to just play with one
Its lke the note 2 is the improvement of galaxy s3 so it will be note 3 for s4

I won't buy S4 over note 2 either. For someone owning S3, it might be an upgrade, though not a significant one. I am looking forward to note 3 though. I hope they won't increase the dimensions significantly. Am not a fan of aluminium body either, which is rumored for note 3. It increases weight. I buy a case for my device, so looks doesn't matter to me. I am fine with plastic. And rumor has it that screen will be plastic instead of glass. So it will thinner (more space for battery) and lighter. I hope the later is true, but its likely to be the other way round.
Totally I agree not buying s4 either

Yeah those are just rumors. Won't happen. Samsung has clarified that aluminium is not practical for them with mass production and everything. And that's a good thing IMO - although not a dealbreaker, I don't like metal phones at all. Your hands get hot like crazy leaving you with sweaty palms, or you'll have freezing cold phone. Above all, easy to dent/scratch than plastic and hard to remove too. Regardless of their motive, thank god that Samsung isn't falling for the "cheap plastic" criticism and switching to metal.
I would not 'upgrade' to a S4 over my N2...N2 is just to awesome. The N3...maybe depending on what it has to offer, but that is my next possible upgrade.
The Note 2 It Is
I am not the least interested in the SGS4.
My Note 2 stays with me at least till the Note 3 comes out in 6-7 months. Also, the Note series are better specced phones compared with the S series.
I like the S4, but not enough to get rid of my Note 2. I do believe though that the S4 is a VERY good phone! I'd recommend it to anyone else who doesn't have an S3 or Note 2. Anyone with an S2 or any other device would fall in love with it! Heck, it made me even think about trading in my Note 2 for it ^.^ But it's not going to happen hehe. I love my Note 2. But that doesn't make the S4 any worse though! It's still a GREAT phone!
I'm waiting for the note 3. Hopefully it'll have a new design!

I won't be getting the S4 either. The ONLY reason though, is because of screen size. Everything else on the S4 is a definite upgrade! Had an S4 for 3 days and I loved it. Amazing screen.
The device I have considered switching for though, is the LG Optimus G Pro.

[Q] Nexus 5 vs LG G2 vs Galaxy S4?

Hello
What i care about most is music (earphones) quality, ability to theme, good camera and beautiful screen. I am not a gamer. Willing to use custom roms.
So, if you were me, whitch phone you'd choose?
Bump
Personally I'd have the S4 due to the AMOLED screen. I prefer the deep blacks over the LCD/IPS screens. S4 has a micro SD card over the 2 you mentioned. S4 is the oldest though. Nexus 5 will continue to receive the latest Android updates and runs AOSP which in return is much smoother and faster than the S4. G2 is a lovely phone too. All 3 would serve you well to be honest.
Out of those 3?... Galaxy S4 every time.
Hi,
Out of those three it' quite a hard choose. I'd go for Nexus 5, due to easiness to install Custom ROM, root, etc. Not only this, but this device is good looking and has a good screen. LG G2 is a nice phone and has, probably, the best screen among the three (not sure though, using N5 and G2 on a store and owning a S4 I can tell it), also has one of the thinnest bezels over there and is one of the thinnest phones.
For headphone quality it's obviously Sony, the best headphone I used was a Sony Noise Reduction owned by my cousin and the second best was the headphone that came with my Xperia Z1. If I were you I'd choose between Nexus 5 and Z1 actually... But that isn't the case now. Keeping in mind what you want to do, then I think S4 is the most suitable, while it's uglier than N5, is harder to customize and is not as thin or have a screen as good as G2, you have everything good with it, not great, but good, if you can understand me. I liked Galaxy S4 headphones, but mine broke in a shot time span.
All in all, any of them would suit you quite goodly. The best thing I'd recommend you doing is going to a nearby store and trying each of them, so check which you like better .
~Lord
PS.: If you get S4, make sure you get the Snapdragon variant (GT-I9505), otherwise it'll be harder to install custom ROMs.

I had a S3 i747 and I was pretty satisfied with it, I had it with CM11 and just love it badly and think that an S4 upgrade will be unnecesary because I didn't see why the people get excited when it was first launched.
Recently I had the oportunity of hold a S4 in my hands and I see that is not larger than a S3 and I liked so much its design, the size of the LED button, its screen size and the quadcore procesosr improvement also was good so I decide to go for a S4. I bought a second hand i337m S4 for about US 300 after sold my i747 in about US 250 so it was a no thinking situation for me. I haven't noticed any annoying bug on stock rom, the camera app was pretty cool with plenty of effects and WatchOn app was great to control your TV. I'm a hardened CM fan so I can't wait to see it on my cellphone so I installed it and so far (I have CM for about 5 days now) the only bug I have see is that while the phone is charging, you can't power on the cellphone (you just have to disconnect it and power on, not a big deal), for TV control I use Peel Smart Remote App and it works just as good as Samsung's app
In conclusion: I would say that if you feel good with your S3 you have no particular need for buy a S4 (probably get the same experience with some improvements) but if you have the oportunity of upgrade at a good price, then go for it

Hi,
some users have problems with Kitkat and some don't.
In general custom roms are running better than the original system. My guess. I'm very satisfied with S4 developed custom roms
It is your choice. There aren't any big hardware changes except full HD screen and camera quality.

I had S3 and I have now S4 (i9500) with Kitkat update, S4 have 2 GB Memory (S3 only 1 GB) & it is more smooth than S3, S4 also doesn't lag as much as S3 do.
in general S4 is a nice update for your current S3, but if you want my advice try to get S5, the screen in S5 is way more accurate and better than S4 screen, the battery also is more powerful.
it depends on how much you are ready to pay $.
Hi i also upgraded from s3 to s4 last October, i would. Recommend You to upgrade to s4 as it is a really good and compact device with 1080p display and thin bezels, unlike the ugly s5 which isn't compact.
