[Q] Selling my Galaxy Tab 7.7 for a Galaxy Note - Galaxy Tab 7.7 General

I am selling my Galaxy Tab 7.7.
1. Its a little too big to fit nicely in my pockets (that extra .7 was the difference as the original Tab 7 fit better.
2. There is very little development going on for the 7.7
3. I have the international version bought off of Negri that does not have an IR blaster. This was actually a big selling point for me as I have a smart home system that is compatible with this.
I am going to switch to the Galaxy Note.
1. It will fit nicely in my pocket.
2. There are already several ICS Roms available for it.
3. No IR Blaster :-(
My question is how much is the International 7.7 selling for? More importantly what carriers is it compatible with? That is the most important question which carriers can use the 7.7 that I bought off of Negri?

You want some galaxy Note? Where do you live? Country?

That's funny. I just bought a new 7.7 to go along WITH my Note. I love them both. I guess I'm just a sucker for AMOLED displays.
Sent from my GT-P6810 using XDA Premium HD app

I also have both, and if someone made me choose I'd lean towards keeping the Note over the 7.7. But, that's mainly because I have a new iPad at home.

Me too, i also have New ipad, Note and Thema 7.7
The only thing i found **** is The horryble scrolling in Facebook and dolphin Browser:-(

The Galaxy Note is perfect for those people who just want or can only afford one device. The combination of the large high resolution screen and S-Pen allows it to work well as Tablet and it is portable enough to be used as a mobile phone. If I had to choose between the Note and 7.7 for my only device then I would get the Note.

I bought both and returned the note
This topic caught my eye as just today I returned the note after using it only for a week. I have had the galaxy tab 7.7 for 2 months now. I have the galaxy nexus as my phone.
The reason I decided to purchase the galaxy note:
1) Note taking
2) More portable yet bigger screen than most phones
What I liked during my trial:
1) Ability to write out my notes in the pen memo app
2) More portable than any other tablet
3) Display was quite good (yet not without fault, see below).
4) It was super fast in use. Apps seemed to install and launch much faster than any android device I have ever owned. The browser was silky smooth (apparently stick browser was optimized by samsung). No stutter or lag anywhere. Even with the same CPU, GPU and RAM specs galaxy tab 7.7 feels slower by a bit for the same tasks (due to honeycomb).
The reason I decided to return the galaxy note:
1) Black wallpaper when viewed in dark shows grey banding. This ruins the perception of the Super AMOLED display which is supposed to especially shine for black color due to infinite contrast. This has been widely reported. However I won't say that just this reason should sway you away from it, as the display otherwise is on par with the galaxy tab 7.7 although slightly less bright.
Galaxy tab 7.7 doesn't have this issue.
2) Galaxy note screen is big but not that much bigger than my galaxy nexus screen (5.3" vs. 4.65"). Screen feels small when compared to other tablets. Can't install tablet format of apps, so that negates the slightly larger screen.(There are ROMs available to make it act like a tablet, but you end up with faulty pen support and really small icons).
3) The micro-SD card slot access requires you to take out the battery. Galaxy tab 7.7 has an exposed slot which is very convenient.
I used galaxy note as a tablet (no SIM card) and decided that it didn't offer much beyond what my galaxy nexus already did screen space and app-wise although the pen functionality was extremely appealing. The smoothness and maturity of ICS was lacking and I didn't want to even risk losing the pen functionality by installing some custom ROMs.
Hope this helps with your decision.

I have an iPad as well which is my primary tablet. The Note is going to be my primary phone.

I've had both the 7.7 and Note (both International versions before their US counterparts were released).
I long for the day Samsung and VZW reach a deal on the Note or Note2.
I used straight talk for my Int'l Note and it was good, but I missed 4G speeds.
The thing I find with all my devices is I like development. I really should learn how b/c if a device doesn't have development I get bored quickly.
My razr is amazing so far even with it's locked bootloaders, but OMG the dev work on the Note is second to none it seems. (At least for the international version).
The Note, the longer I haven't had it the more I miss it. It was speedy, great support/development, and could double up as both a phone and tablet.
The 7.7 I haven't missed one bit since I sold it. It was a 6810 (wi-fi) and virtually no development going on at all for the 7.7, especially the wi-fi version. Secondly, it just didn't impress me the way the original Galaxy Tab or 10.1 did. <<<I contribute a lot of that to lack of development and being stuck with stock crappy honeycomb.
OP, I think you will be much happier with the Note than the 7.7, but that's just my opinion. I really miss mine but I just can't bring myself to give up two grandfathered unlimited data plans on VZW.

UPDATE: Verizon will be discontinuing the unlimitted plan for all

I guess this news will change your plans:
http://bits.blogs.nytimes.com/2012/05/17/verizon-clarifies-shared-data-plans/
Verzion will be cancelling the grandfathered unlimitted plans. The only way you will b e ablet to keep it is if you pay full price for all your phone upgrades or stay with the phone you currently have.

I have your same exact problem!!!
Galaxy tab 7 fits in back pockets while 7.7 dont... but i just think im not putting that in my pockets... that tab is really good! I love it.

Anyone got a note too? What's your opinion between that and 7.7?

I have a galaxy s2 and a tab 7.7 but I'm debating whether to shift them both and get a note.
I also have an iPad which is great for longer web sessions but no way near as portable as the 77 which is why I got the 7.7.
The note and 77 share the same resolution even though the note is smaller but is it too big as a phone?
The note also already has ICS roms , I'm slightly worried the 7.7 is going to get lost in the ever growing tab range and be slow for updates .
3 devices seems excessive even though I do use them all.
Help lol
I use both, well... I use Note and my wife use tab 7.7. Don't think you want to replace tab 7.7 with Note. Note is great for portability, I simply love it, but tab 7.7 is better for media / magazine / web consumption.
Stick with your S2 and tab 7.7. Or switch your S2 to Note and keep the tab.

I like the Note a lot, and there is a fair amount of overlap between it and the 7.7. But, reading books on the 7.7 is much better, as is watching videos. The Note is great to pop in my car dock and use for Google Music streaming and nav apps. I have the luxury of both since my company pays for my wireless service.
As far as ICS ROMs for the Note, that's only for the N7000 international version, and so far it's pretty unsatisfactory. ICS is not a panacea, and I actually quite like most of Samsung's TouchWiz apps on the stock Gingerbread ROM (although I ditched the launcher in favor of ADW EX).
The 7.7 is on Samsung's list of "promised" updates for ICS, and since they just started updating the GS2, I think they're going to hold true to their word. I'm guessing it will be May for the 7.7.
I have both the Note and the 7.7. They are both great in their area. The note is great as a phone especially with the invlusion of the s pen. The 7.7 is excellent for ebook reading , browsing, and portibility. They both compliment each other
i have them both as well..
Id perferr the 7.7 for not being at work..
When i get home.. I switch my sim from the note to the 6800
I find as the months go by, i wouldn't have it any other way.
Very pleased with both, though only carry one at a time.
Good luck

Would you trade n7 for galaxy tab 10.1?

Would u trade ur n7 for a galaxy tab 10.1. My friend wants to trade me strait up. I like the bigger tab but I love the n7 tho.
Sent from my Samsung Cyanogenmodded S III
Nope. Sammy can go take a hike with their 10.1.
You get a bigger screen, but that's the only major benefit. The Nexus 7 has a better CPU (Tegra 3 vs Tegra 2, quad core vs dual), and is probably going to have a better development scene (however, I have no idea on the current state of development on the GT 10.1).
Edit: Hmm, it also seems to get cellular and rear camera. If you want cellular, and have a want for a rear camera, I don't see it as that bad of a deal.
No, I've never liked 10" tablets, iPads or otherwise. The N7 is the perfect size for me.
Don't need the cellular since I can tether to my HOX, and taking pictures or video with a tablet makes you look like an idiot.
Yeah I like that it has a rear can but do t really need it I have an s3. But I really like the bigger screen and as fas as the development I already feel too caught up with my s3 that I just flashed paranoid android to my n7 and left it alone.
I guess I just wanna feel good about giving up a newer product for an older model

If you can sell the Tab for more than the cost of the Nexus 7, then it might be worth it to make the trade, sell the Tab, and then buy a new Nexus 7.
True but If I trade id just keep it. But thanks guys for ur input

The Tab 10.1 is a nice device. Its a generation behind in specs. I liked my 10" Transformer but it had a micro SD card and HDMI out. I found it tedious to lug around and eventually stopped using it because of such. Everytime I wanted to use it, it was dead.
I sold my transformer for $200. The N7 was $250+tax. Not sure what the Tab sells for but they are probably being flooded in the market since the 10" Note is out.
Sammy stopped updating the Tab a long time ago. I'm not sure if it even officially got ICS let alone jelly bean. The N7 has JB and will get KeyLime Pie when its released and probably LoliPop.
Tell him to sell it over in the Market and pick up a N7.
Sent from my Nexus 7 using xda premium
I've always hated larger tablets... once you hit 10" tablets I find little reason to not just get a laptop and be done with it. While the N7 is smaller, it's very workable. We're remodeling some areas of our house, and I keep a few pictures and measurement notes down in my N7. When I'm at Lowes, it's nice to pull out the N7 and get a better idea of what I'm facing at home. Since the N7 fits in my back pocket, it's only another +1 to that court.
That's just my 2c though. I've talked to some people who love 10" tablets. I personally don't, and on that premise alone I wouldn't do the trade. That being said, you're also swapping out for slightly older hardware too. Nothing wrong with that if it's worth it, but I see no compelling reason that I personally would do that trade.
Heavy tab 10.1,I like my N7
NNNNOOOOOOO!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
thats the first thing i want to say to you.
i am ex tab 10.1 owner.
the performance is TERRIBLE!!!!
i started using from stock honeycomb 3.1
its laggy beyond words, and i was forced to learn to root and flash custom roms that are 3.2
things got SLIGHTLY better but it was still laggy.
simple things like typing on keyboard, bringing up on screen keyboard, scrolling are still choppy.
then ICS came, and i flash various customs like AOKP and CM9
things got better again, overall UI is acceptable, no where near buttery smooth but still ok.
however only the UI smoothness improved in ICS, apps, games, any slightly 3D games will play in "slow motion" or "stop frame" style.
the tegra2 just dont cut it. its a dissapointment.
i sold my tab10,1 the moment i saw google IO announce nexus 7.
nexus 7 is superior in every way then that tab10.1 in terms of performance, responsiveness.
the only weakness is the small screen, but that gives it another benefit which is better portability.
the tab 10,1 browser crashes on a daily basis.
memory management is terrible even on ics.
try load FB desktop page on tab 10,1 stock browser, keep scrolling down,
as the FB page loads more newsfeeds, the scrolling becomes soo laggy, and it will start FC eventually.
NEVER trade your nexus 7 for tab10.1. you will surely regret it.
I actually did the opposite, sold my Galaxy Tab 2 10.1 and got the N7. Main reason was the weight and portability, I lasted 30 minutes with the 10.1 in the bath and my arms got tired. With the N7, I can watch movies anywhere, holding anyway I want and it feels great. Plus it's much more snappier (I did install a CM10 nightly on the 10.1 which was much better than its stock ICS but wasn't as great).
Nexus 7 is the best Android tablet out there in my opinion. Not just the best 7 inch, the best. I'm somewhat of a perfectionist when it comes to tech. I've had an Acer Iconia 10" and 7", Transformer prime, Galaxy tab 2, and now this. Not quite every tablet on the market but a pretty decent cross section. I've also had a close look at a few other tabs.
The only thing that comes close is the transformer prime. That thing is ok but it's harder to hold, much heavier and the dock seems like a nice idea but ends up being a pita in practice.
This thing is a little pocket rocket, very powerful whilst being very easy to hold even for long periods and extremely portable.
By the way the galaxy tab is ****. Samsung don't even bother to support it so it was still on honeycomb when I last checked two weeks ago.

Galaxy note 8.0

Officially announced on their Facebook page, with pix...
Looks like a giant Note II
And here on their home page.
What you guys think? I want one!
Spec wise it's almost identical, so i don't think i would get one. Note 10.1 is enough for me

I WILL have one.. Oh yes, I will...
It's got the home button from the phone though. That was one of the things that people hated about the Note 2 compared to the Note 1: having to push a mechanical button instead of a capacitive home button meant having to change to a finger push instead of a stylus poke.
The design, at least to me, is kind of stupid. Android on a tablet doesn't do well in portrait and widgets end up squished to fit. Using the Note 8 in landscape is going to be challenging because of the button placement and types of buttons Samsung decided to use. And having what appears to be a single front-facing speaker is a step back from the Note 10.1. It's just my opinion but having less than a 10" tablet kind of defeats the purpose especially with S Note and multiview. I'm sure it'll sell well though.
I just hope we get some of the new features like Awesome Note (Samsung has a one year Android exclusive) and the addition of TV Discovery to Peal to pull in Netflix and Hulu content.
I waited for Note 8.0 thinking it would be just like Note 10.1 but smaller. But it is more like a bigger version of Note 2 but with poorer camera. Meh.
Samsung - this is an enlarged phone, not a proper tablet.
I don't have a Note 10.1, since I really don't want to drop 400-500 on a tablet anytime soon as I did with the Thinkpad Tablet, and that was a huge mistake. As far as I've seen, this tablet is a lot better, but I think the price point of this 8.0 tablet might be appealing. We'll see, I guess.
Anyone think a second version of the 10.1 tablet is due as well, in the near future at least?
im still thinking if this will be a good backup phone from the Note 10.1 or i might settle for the Nexus 4. but ever since the rumors about the Note 8 came out, i am so into it.
we will see when it is out in stores.
=)

Well the Note 8.0 solves THE big knock on the Note 10.1 - lousy PPI. Because of the smaller form factor the PPI goes up by almost 50 points. That's enough to make a real difference. Also thumb typing in portrait will be much more comfortable. It will also have a large enough screen to handwrite in portrait (unlike the Note 2).
One side benefit of this is that the Note 10.1 will get cheaper. BestBuy has it for $449 today. First time I've seen it on sale there.
Last point. Note 10.1 will now get better software.
I expect the Note 8.0 to be wildly popular and honestly the tablet the Note 10.1 was meant to be.
MWC is on so keep your favorite tech sites bookmarked and check them frequently for all the mobile news out of Spain this week. 7-inch tablets will be big this year. Today, Engadget is reporting on 3 new 7-inchers being shown at MWC--1 by HP that will be priced at $169 USD (not breathtaking specs on it) and 2 by Lenovo. It will be interesting to see if a 3G international version of the note 8 with dialing capabilities will be announced at the official unveiling at MWC. As many have noted, the speaker placement looks similar to the note 2, leading to speculation that some models might have phone capabilities.
I don't see a point why a Note 10.1 user should consider buying this tablet. Of course, dpi is lousy and i won't deny it, it just sucks. But that's one point - the Note 10.1 is a full-fledged android tablet. Landscape oriented, great software, enough power to maintain the upcoming years and some great features like stereo frontfacing speakers.
The Note 8.0 is a LOT more specified and in my opinion it wants to appeal a bit more professional users than most who bought the Note 10.1. I bought it for studying, it'll do a great job then. But i also wanted a multimedia tablet i can use at home, i think the Note 8.0 will have difficulties in that. It's too much different from standard android tablets.
I hoped for the Note 10.1 to get cheaper before i bought it (i waited for almost 2 months) but finally couldn't resist it anymore. I wouldn't buy the Note 8.0 anyway.

Alright I didn't read Engadet yesterday afternoon and noe see that they've got a preview if the note 8 up and the internaltional 3G version will be able to make phone calls. The article contains a video, too. http://www.engadget.com/2013/02/23/samsung-galaxy-note-8-preview/

The Wi-Fi version won't and the U.S. and Canada won't be offered a 3G version. And probably in the countries that offer both more than half sold will be Wi-Fi only because people don’t want to have to buy 3G data. The N8000's a phone too but still survives without looking like a giant Note II including hard and soft buttons that are difficult to use in landscape and a single speaker. Do you honestly see anyone with a Note 8 holding it to their ear for phone calls?

It's just the classic comparison of a 7/8" tablet vs. a 10" tablet. It's no different than comparing the N7 and N10; they are meant for two different market segments. The Note 8's going after the iPad Mini, not the Note 10.1. I agree about the better PPI between the Note 8 and 10 but because of the extra screen real estate you'd typically hold the Note 10 further away minimizing the impact. 10" high-end Android tablets have never sold particularly well because their price points are too close to the iPad and with that the masses tend to go for the original. If I was shopping for a tablet today I'd still buy the Note 10.1 in spite of its PPI because of its features. I like that it's designed to be used in landscape and the extra display space makes productivity stuff tons easier than working with a 7/8" tablet. But, to your point, based on size, price, and volume in the 7/8" space the Note 8 will easily outsell the Note 10.1. And I don't think Samsung cares one way or the other. The only thing I'll give my Note 10.1 up for is a Note the same size or larger with a FHD display. Purely my personal opinion of course.
Its pretty much the same tablet. Ill wait another year or atleast until tech advances enough to justify dropping another 500+ for a tablet. And when that happens, it will probably be a nexus
I also find the resolution on the Samsung devices pretty poor :crying: I wish Samsung would bump them up!

higher dpi sounds great, just remember it means more work for the battery and cpu, I believe the wacom digitizer and resolution need to match also. personally I cannot sacrifice screen real estate, annotating blue prints requires a large screen for me. would love something in the 11.6 range. but I do believe they have different audiences, (I never believe in a one size fits all approach) probably get the little lady one, call it the " lady note"
I only want one cuz it's sexy. That and I'm a sucker for ads lol.
Realistically this could never replace my Note 10.1.

[Q] Change the Galaxy Tab for a Galaxy Note?

Hi! I'm new at this forum and recently bought a Samsung Galaxy Tab 3 10.1 tablet and I'm not really sure what to think of it yet. I was looking for a tablet I could use exceptionally for college purposes: to write essays, to take notes, to browse the web and essentially manage my college life (and of course watching a couple of movies from time to time ). I found the Galaxy Note 10.1 on the internet and fell in love with it, but the Galaxy Tab 3 was on sale on a local store and I read some good reviews about it so I bought it. I found out that it lags so much it becomes irritating and reboots at least once per day. I eventually installed Nova Launcher and the lag almost disapparead but it still happens when I'm browsing the web from time to time, and the reboots still continue , so I may return it or ask for another one. I read a couple threads saying you could root the Tab and use it for note taking too, but I'm not sure about rooting it now, since I will lose my warranty and I need it now because I'm in my first year in college. The display resolution really doesn't bother me that much, of course a better resolution screen wouldn't hurt a thing, but what I really want is something portable and productive so I don't have to carry around my laptop which is very heavy...
Should I buy the Galaxy Note or stay with the Tab?
Hi.
I make the same brainstorm in every new gadget i want to buy.
Better performance vs more expensive.
The key is value for money. Your valuation vs you money.
If the Tab doesnt meet your expectations, its has low value for you and turns out to be more expensive in the end comparing to the investment on a Note (2012 is cheap now).
Got a 10.1 and for note taking in meeting, net surfing emails etc its the BEST.
Take my following advice with salt and pepper:
I think you have already made the decision for swap it for a note and need some moral support
So here it is: Go for it
Regards
Nuno

Note 10.1 2012 is not worth to buy, imho. If you really want Note, buy newer one. Samsung hasnt upgraded this device and I have already problems with that. You cannot share SNote files. Apps for smart-devices are nowadays often developed for Android 4.2/4.3 because those give much more opportunities to develope functions in apps. So if you are thinking to keep that device for somentime and buy smart-accessories, you will have problems. But if you are looking a cheap tablet with a pen, notngoing to share SNotes or not going to buy smart-accessories, then you might want to get this tablet. Otherwise, stay away from it!

Samsung Galaxy Note 10.1 (GT-N8000) is the CHOICE!
Don't listen people that you say 2014 is better and blabla...
I should have possibility to compare Samsung Galaxy Note 10.1 (GT-N8000) and Samsung Galaxy Note 10.1 2014 (GT-P6050).
Even the 2014 has better HW, GT-N8000 has more followers and even official Samsung doesn't update GT-N8000 firmware from 4.1.2 to higher one, firmware on 2014 is Android 4.3 (by my oppinion worst Android ever!).:crying: But never mind. When I compare this two devices 2014 had lags, problems with Wi-Fi and even with S-Pen.
Antutu benchmark (after customization ROMS in both devices) show mi score Samsung Galaxy Note 10.1 (GT-N8000) = 20976 and Samsung Galaxy Note 10.1 2014 (P6050) = 31500. Really big difference. :good: But even 2014 is most high-perfomace tablet on the market, I felt GT-N8000 more efective than 2014. Strange, isn't it? But it's only my oppinion.
PRO's 2012 (GT-N8000)
-Big users support
-A lot of tuned apps
-User friendly
-Great work with S-Pen
-Price = $249
CON's
-Old firmware (but after customizitation you can have even KitKat 4.4.2)
-IPS resolution only 1280x800
-Less memory (16GB) but i Saw 32 GB version too!
PRO's
-One of big perfomance tablet ever!
-Great display resolution 2560*1600
-to future best tablet ever
CON's
-Unwanted apps, a lot of bloatware (but you can unistall it as you want)
-still new device, untuned apps
-A lot od lags
-New S-Pen do what should't be
-Price = $499
Thank you so much for all your replies! After reading a lot of reviews I decided to buy the galaxy note 10.1. (2012 version) and so far i'm very happy with it! I hadn't browsed a lot about the android version problem so i didn't know that it was so far late in the android version but in my case i don't find it a very big issue and i'm very happy with it, there is no lag at all (even when running a ton of apps). The only problem that i encountered was changing the wallpaper so it fits perfectly on the screen, because everytime i tried to change it im forced to crop the picture and turns the oicture to a crappy resolution... I was a little afraid since I hated the tab but so far so good. Of course I hope they update it in the future. I've been searching the web about roms and roots but I understood nothing... can someone enlight me or direct me to a topic where it is explained? My note is the gt-n8010. All I need is a shiny new cover for my note and i'm a very happy costumer! And maybe in a few years i will buy the next version

(you might want to update the firmware first before doing this)
If you want to use any pic for a wallpaper do this:
Install simple image wallpaper live wallpaper. It lets you select sny pic you want for your wall and it works great and is free.
Go do it now.

I would prefer N8013 over Tab 3 10.1 because:
More RAM (2GB vs 1GB)
Quad-core CPU (ARM vs X86)
S Pen
100% virtual buttons on the bottom (true tablet operation)
Flash (it does not work with X86 Android)
I prefer the note 10.1 over the tablet.
More functionally and productively.

New Galaxy tab s better than note 10.1 2014?

i was wondering if we leave alone the s pen feature , whether the newly launched galaxy tab s be a better option than the note 10.1 2014. ? in terms of screen , battery , performance etc.
I always prefer SuperAMOLED screen. (oversaturate color)
I think next Note Pro series will use SuperAMOLED display soon.
(CPU /RAM / GPU / Battery may be not much different) :silly:

People who "leave alone" S Pen probably shouldn't have bought a Note-series in the first place.

As a consumption device? Yes. Its display alone makes it a better consumption device. As a productivity device? Highly doubtful because of the many S Pen-related features unique to the Note-series. It comes with a pretty cool keyboard accessory which will be intriguing to people but also (as of now) only comes in a 16GB version which is a fail with 4.4's external SD card limitations (for the unrooted).

The Tab S' aren't using S-801 (like the SGS5 they're patterned after) so it's highly likely their using the same h/w all Samsung's tablets starting with the N10.1-14 are using which mean S-800/Exynos 5420 (with HMP disabled) .That means outside whatever the display impacts it'll perform exactly the same as our device and the Pro's. Energy usage wise, AMOLED does better on blacks and LCD does better on whites. Our battery is larger at 8,220mAh vs. the Tab S' at 7,900mAh. For people that watch a lot of video the Tab S should last longer than the N10.1-14 with the opposite occuring on web browsing.
As for dimensions the Tab S is thinner and lighter. It's also bigger but you get a 1/2 inch more display area in the process. It has a lower PPI but it may not be PenTile so we'll have to see after it's reviewed how, outside being AMOLED, it holds up in comparison. I have a N3 and am constantly bouncing back-and-forth between its AMOLED display and my N10.1-14's LCD display. I'm fine with either.
Is it worth moving from a N10.1-14 to a Tab S? I guess that's an individual determination. I'd never give up S Pen so I have no interest in it. The 16GB limitation is also a turn-off. I do like everything else about it but wouldn't pay the difference on what I'd be able to sell my N10.1-14 for against it's purchase price for the display and other new features. To each their own.

Samsung - Galaxy Tab S 10.5 - 32GB
I love my Note tablet and rarely use the pen!
Spec wise its a top android tablet, that you can also write on
...Although I do want to check this new out.

Well leaving out the S-pen seems to make the question of "which is better" kind of an obvious answer. But regardless if you already own the N10.1 it's definitely not worth the upgrade. The specs are superior, but ever so slightly. And seriously what is with Samsung releasing a new line of tablets like every goddamn month? Weren't the Tab PROs supposed the be the flagship tablets of he first half of 2014? Now we have a summer line of flagships in the "S" line before we get the new Notes in the Fall? Not to mention the plethora of budget tablets they have too. This is starting to get ridiculous. Speaking of the Note though, that's the one you'll want to wait for if you're considering upgrading IMO. The next Note 4 phablet is rumored to have beastly specs (including the snapdragon 805) and since the Note version of the tablets are basically blown up versions of the phone, you can expect similar specs on those too.
If it's for a 2.7ghz SD805, 3-4gigs of RAM, a SuperAMOLED (possibly 4k?) display, and the small things like the charging port on the side, and the micro USB 3.0 port that our 2014 version is stupidly missing then it's worth the upgrade I guess.

S-pen is the reason we bought Notes. Otherwise the Tab Pro would have been the way to go, and the S is just a slicker version of that with a better screen.

Welllll ... that, like so many other things, is answered by "it depends".
I bought the OG Note 10.1 (N8000) grey-market 'cause of the features: AT&T-capable 3G WAN, 4 Exynos cores, 2GB RAM, Micro-SD expansion and a bright, 10" screen; in my case to get those features (that nobody else had at the time on any tablet easy to get in the US) I also got this "S-Pen" thing- which I used once or twice when I bought to try out, and never used it again.
So now comes the 2014 version, with a faster Snapdragon CPU, 3GB RAM, LTE on nearly every US carrier's band, 32GB of internal storage and expandable storage- couple that with T-Mobile US giving it to me for $0 down and 0% financing and a discount on data, and it was again a great deal for me- except this time I don't think I've even pulled the S-Pen out once
But I do know people with OG Note 10.1s that use their S-Pens quite often, even as an extension of their touch finger.

Those are great niche examples where other features drove the decision. I'm getting a SM-P605M the next time I'm in Latin America to replace my 3G N10.1-14 so I can get LTE data and the phone features you gave up when you got a carrier N10.1-14. Just goes to show everyone has different needs and priorities.
The subject of this thread is about choosing between the Tab S and N10.1-14. For those without unique needs (like ours) and who have no need for S Pen it's pretty much a no brainer decision. It's only a matter of time before the U.S. carriers start selling the LTE version(s) so, without the dialer, folks wanting LTE without S Pen will have the same no brainer decision.
Once you start to use S-Pen and its very hard to change others devices without S-Pen. Even I rarely use S-Pen, but still I want a device with it and it can be very handy whenever I need it. :victory:

I can see where that could be a deal-breaker for some, but I ended up going from Straight Talk for my OG Note's service (which has talk and text) to an AT&T iPad data-only plan; while it was good to know that I had the ability to make calls, I just never used it (even when abroad- all my handsets are unlocked, and I'd just used those).
But I have hope that someone's going to find a way to allow the bootloader to modem down/side-grade the flash, then I'm all good, mostly so's I can say I have the feature, even if I don't use it

No one could figure it out on previous gen 3/4G G-Tabs with unlocked bootloaders so it's a long shot.

I had a 3G N10.1-12 too and am kind of hooked. Not that most here will care but here's some benefits I've found...
Talk time is like a month. I use my N10.1-14 for all my multi-hour conference calls just for battery security and to keep my phone alive for other routine calls.
It's great being able to have the phone function and S Note on one device when you're in a call. You don't have to fumble around with different devices to mute or conference other's in. In Pen Window the dialer can be made a pinhead so it's always available quickly.
Action memo works the same way it does on my N3 and the extra screen area of the N10.1-14 makes it more useful.
MMS is great with a keyboard and mouse; especially when setting up and sending group messages.
This stuff doesn't work without MMS and the dialer...
