Is there a update zip to root

so you don't need a pc to root? My vibrant has a update zip to root so there is no need for a pc...
I want to root a friends fascinate but can't find a update zip for the fascinate..
Weird cause not everyone has a pc so you would think someone made one just like they did the vibrant...
Anyone know if a way? I searched and etc but could find anything...thanks
Just flash the cloxkwork recovery in odin it is essentially root

Yeah, unlike the Vibrant or Captivate the signing keys aren't accessible out of the box. You need to install Clockwork to flash any zips. (And once you do, the zips won't be called update.zip anyway- that file is where the Clockwork launcher goes. You can install from any zip name within Clockwork though.)

So basically I can't rooy without a pc? Instal clockwork using pc then flash through recovery..
Installing clockwork is not the same as root... here is some suggested tutorials:

You can install root manually with adb etc that is platform independent. Or use the one click root method which is a dos script solution.

Are you on stock ka6?
If yes, you won't be able to reinstall packages without modding the recovery first. Or the method I prefer is flashing another kernal.
If you're not on ka6, sometimes you have to reinstall packages twice in a row for it to work.
yeah, stock froyo came with the 3e recovery, which needs to be modified to install the CWR zip. There is a link in my noob guide for this on rooting stock froyo... or you could try searching the dev section..... or you could use the ALT METHOD in the noob guide. lots of choices.
went to the dev section and it was already on the first page: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=833423
Yea I have tried that method and I am running into the same problem that the last person posted. It says it is booting into cwr then reloads just to come back to the stock recovery

then use my ALT METHOD in the noob guide.
Just flash ka6 stock + voodoo with odin.
Sounds scary, but trust me it's the easiest way.

You need to learn to use odin anyways if you want cm7
Thanks for all the ideas, somehow after just messing around I got it to work, no clue how lol

[q] help please...

hi all,
I have recently got a samsung galaxy s GT-I9000.
firmware version is 2.2 stock.
now here's what i did.
1. i rooted the phone.
2. downloaded rom manager.
3. via rom manager, i flashed clockworkmod recovery.
now, when i restart in recovery mode, it starts in stock recovery, i.e.. does not enter the CWM recovery menu. i selected the option, install update.zip from internal memory, i get error.
i want to flash a custom rom but cant get CWM on my phone. can someone point out what am i missing. any help would be greatly appreciated.
thanks.
Read an educate yourself.
Try search.. it's really easy!
As to the why:
The original recovery won't allow the use of unsigned zips in recovery..
The very quick how..
Copied from another thread on this page:
use Odin to flash this Speedmod kernel if you are on Froyo. If you are on Gingerbread flash the TalonDev kernel using the v2.2 tar
(Thanks @rschenk)
How to use Odin???
Trust me, if you don't know, you should really educate yourself a bit. You can find many tutorials in q&a.. most of the time as sticky post. (As 10000 or so have asked the exact same question.)

How did you do it through Goomanager? Are you going to menu and then hitting InstallOpenRecoveryScript (correct method) or trying to manually search for the right one?

Strange that doesn't work. Try either adb or odin install: http://www.teamw.in/project/twrp2/178
I recommend flashing 2.5.0.2 using Odin 3.07. Seems to be much more stable than 2.6.

Flashing IMG file

Hi..
Trying to flash cwm touch.. Its an IMG file. I know there are tools like flash image gui but it doesn't support my i337m phone. I know pdin can be used but Odin scares me
Is there a way to flash the IMG file from phone terminal or any other way.. Too bad ROM manager doesn't do IMG files...
All Google searches uses Odin or other tools when don't work for my phone.
Thx.

Odin won't use an .img file either. You'd have to convert it to a tar. Have you tried having rom manager install the recovery. It's an option within it.
Problem with ROM manager for cwm touch is that I already paid for the touch version 2 times on previous phonew This is a new phone and its wants me to pay for the third time. That is why I want to use .IMG file to flash it and get it done.

Really, I looked at the unpaid version and it gave me the option to install a recovery. I already have one so I didn't test it but assume it would have worked. The method wolverine gave should work too. But heimdall has a steep learning curve, at least when I've tried it.
Edit, I took the install recovery one step further and you're right, it wants me to pay for it. F that
Screw cwm. Download goo manager and user twrp. It's what I use and I like it better anyway.
