SMASHED SCREEN!!! doh - Galaxy S 4 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Right, I got me s4 on release day in UK (well 27th noth 26th), all was good until tonight, I just got me s3 back from a mate today who put a new front glass on it (broke in my pocket a couple a months ago but was usable, cost me £12 for glass and £20 to get fitted)
Sat down on sofa tonight and heard a cracking noise, took my s4 outta me pocket and the bottom 3/4 of the screen was black. Samsung phones build quality is s****, don't get me wrong I'm the biggest Samsung fan there is, it's the only tv or phones in my house but to break in my pocket after 2 weeks. NOT ON.
The good news is I contacted O2 uk straight away and they have a new phone on the way since its insided the 28 days from purchase. You can guess I've ordered a few cases to protect it but if its gonna break with a bit of stress in your pocket no case will save it.
I know your bound to be thinking "this mad man must haved a screw driver or sum other sharp instrument in his pockets" but I don't, just my wallet and maybe a few loose coins.
Anyone else have any issues like me or am I the only one.
Cheers,
Glynn

lol, yeah gonna have te shed a few pound way thed help of s health lol. Naw but seriously, if I didn't love me sammy gadgets so much I'd be sitting her with a working xperia z / htc one. Was gonna say iphone 5 but naw I wouldn't go that far.
Thank god it happened within the first 28 days, at least now I know how vulnerable it is to fat b**tards and can get the biggest rubberised case I can find. Sort of defeats the purpose of having a slim sleek phone but I don't wani be landed with a £2 or £300 bill to fix it the second time round

You are not the first one to mention your screen cracked simply from having the phone in your pocket. A few pages back you find this topic http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2260083
Note they mention it's the LCD itself that shattered, not the Gorilla Glass. At this point I could not buy an S4 without constantly worrying about my device. I will see what phones the late summer/fall will bring.

Too much surface glass on this device for a pocket. That 5" display and a small bezel is a fragile combination.

IMHO.

I'm one of the others who's LCD cracked while phone was in pocket, but three said they would charge me just to look at it, then charge me again as is physical damage and was fine for the first week!
I've now sent it back to Samsung, who have said they will charge me to fix it, still waiting on the quote!
So your very lucky O2 are shipping you a new phone.
As probably 80% of phone owners carry their phones in their pockets, it's very worrying that Samsung seem to have made a phone that can easily break if carried that way!

Quick update I phoned Samsung this morning was told their service center has informed them that my phone is fine! I guess they had a quick look saw the glass wasn't cracked and decided its fine without even turning it on or looking at it from different angles! I'll find out more on Monday when I the service center is open

That's quite odd
Was there anything else in the pocket? Or just the phone?
Not doubting what you're saying, just trying to think of what could have caused it and what to try and avoid when I get mine

This is kind of worrisome since I'm planning on getting an S4 soon and always keep my phone in my pocket.

They told me 130, but it is a matter of worth is it worth it to you to maybe save 20-30 bucks on a screen when they will most likely just give you a new phone? Not really worth it to me.
there was someone that posted either in this forum or the i9000 forum that he had found a display screen for his vibrant at a vendor in texas for $65
i'll look for the thread and come back and post if i find it but you might look for it as well -
found it - was in the captivate forum - you might check with the OP to see if he got what he paid for
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=745467&highlight=screen
I would like to have 2 working vibrants. That would be nice it would give me a test phone and a normal use phone. I will probably just do the insurance and be done. And worry about this screen later on. The screen being cracked has minimal effects on viewing the screen and zero effect to the responsiveness of the the touch screen but it does get annoying to look at after a while. And I do have this one running a 1741 quadrant score with little effort but will work great on the insurance claim phone
Sent from my SGH-T959 using XDA App
Here is the link that has the captivate screen, you might call them and see if they can get the Vibrant. The price on the 'Cap' is really cheap in compirson to what i thought it would be. Only like $75.

Goodbye my beloved x10

Today is a very dark day! A doomsday in retrospect as I have by no fault of my own dropped my X10i down the toilet! It doesn't turn on and I don't even get a light. I
Have had it since 2010 and not a scratch on it but all is lost due to the monster in the loo!
I have had many good memories and have met a lot of friends but my insurance have assured me that I would not get another x10i due to Sony erriccson not existing so I must say goodbye to the x10
I would like to thank oodie for his awesome miui, wolfbreak for his gaming rom and free xperia team and all other devs for there awesome work and all the fixes which has enabled the x10 to still be living on

I dropped my first x10 down the toilet too, it must be a common problem, it didn't work either so I rang the insurance up for a new one but it had dried out and started working by the time it'd been delivered. I still got the new one because I didn't really fancy a phone that'd been down the toilet though.
The next phone I lost walking my dog in the snow, so I rang up the insurance company to get a new one and, by some sort of miracle, I found it again about 2 weeks later, so I took it home, dried it out because the snow had melted by then and it still worked!
So you never know, all hope might not be lost.
It's never goodbye, it's just until we meet again.
Xperia X10 Disassembly Guide
I've pulled my XPERIA X10i apart to repair( I do have correct tools) a 'stuck' microSIM and it's SIM card adapter and it's not to hard and gives better access to dry out parts.
This should NOT be attempted if you have no experience in disassembling and reassembly of a cell phone and/or the phone is under warranty or has insurance.
How to Save a Wet Cell Phone
Thank you so much to you all for your advice but its definitely caput! Its been out for a day now and it still has water between the screen and digitiser and as it was there for half an hour so its a lost cause! The worst thing is I kept it immaculate condition it no scuffs scratches and my Mrs actually called it my second woman as i looked after it better than her and after 3 years it was still like new. Anyway I am not leaving xda I have a nexus 7 and I will soon have a new android 'wife' I just hope it will keep me as happy as my x10 did
However if the insurance offer a cash settlement I might go for another x10

build it into the single parts. there are many instructions on this on youtube. then you can dry the screen and let it be for a week or better more in rice and afterwards build it together again.

Should I get this phone?

I no I no....this post is gonna receive lots of bias info but I still wanna give it a try and I hope people r honest. I have read all over in these forums, there are lots of threads like this but at points it seemed people were overly sarcastic about everything.
My contract ends in a couple of weeks. I'm gonna be switching to tmobile as its hella cheaper. Now putting specs aside, I no they are great, how is everything else in the phone.
My primary concern is the glass back. It seems like everyone is split among the issues-some have already shattered it and others haven't.
Anything else I should no before setting my mind on which phone I should get?
Thanks
Sent from my HTC PH39100 using xda app-developers app
Hardware is great, price is great. It appears that build quality is VERY inconsistent seeing as most of my friends and myself have seemingly perfect units, but there are still a billion new RMA threads every day. To protect the glass back it's safest to get yourself a case. If, like me, you don't like using the phone with a case on then try a pouch case to protect it in your pocket but which allows you to use it 'naked' when you want to. Mine hasn't shattered yet although there are some minute and unnoticeable scratches on the back glass; they can't be seen unless in the perfect light.
I have this phone for a few months now and I absolutely love it! It's fast it's super handsome ... it is very unique!!!
Personally I didn't have any problem with the glass... except a little scratch which I don't know what happened!! My problem with the glass is that it's super slippery! It sometimes moves even on flat surfaces like coffee table...! 2 week ago I ordered some skins for back of my phone from here:
http://dbrand.com/submodels/nexus-4/
My phone looks even better with this, looks very luxury! It has a better grip now and doesn't slip away like fish! I'm using screen protection on gorrila glass also just to avoid taking any scratch...
I didn't drop my phone on a hard floor but I did drop it on carpet and one time I kicked it and it hit the wall! Nothing happened thou
If you like taking pictures with your phone I have to say the Camera isn't the best specially in low light situations but it's not the worst either...
I like the screen better than Super Amoled cause colors are more natural but I gotta say it looks a little washed out sometimes! It could be more colorful, you can improve it with custom kernels if you are planning to root...
Everything else about this phone is 10/10... battery life, smoothness, update support, appearance and ..... I'd give this phone 9 out of 10
I was seriously considering this phone also a couple of weeks ago. Posted my thoughts on XDA and the guys convinced me to buy it. One of the best decisions ever. The phone looks stunning and the build quality is excellent on mine. So far I managed to avoid scratches by keeping the back screen protector on and putting a case on it straight away.I haven't rooted mine yet because you will get the fastest updates from Google straight. However if you do want to root it there will be a variety of alternatives available (maybe an Ubuntu OS later). So trust me it is a good phone I will give it a 9.5/10 minimum.
Don't mean to troll..still with vzw. And hella jelly of u assholes...DNA is Aiight tho...on topic was I'd buy it if I could... Might anyway!!!!

I waited to buy my n4 for a while, I mean the shortage helped but still I waited. Expandable storage being the biggest reason and the geek in me wanted to see what else would come to the market to rival the n4.....I wish I had pulled the trigger earlier. The phone is phenomenal! Best phone I've owned by far, still wish storage was expandable....I'm annoyed with Google for that and their dumb explanation, but other than that I love my phone! I got myself a heavy duty case just in case....so far so good!
Did I mention that I love this phone with all my heart lol

Sent from my HTC PH39100 using xda app-developers app
Check out this video, sound isn't the best but it's still quite loud. The quality can be a bit tinny at times but normally it's OK. The biggest issue with the speakers for me is the placement as when you put the phone down on a flat surface the sound is entirely muffled (and I mean entirely, there's almost nothing coming out).
Its the best phone for the value of any smart phone and if you are going TMobile pre-paid check out Straight Talk, its basically the same service but $15 a month cheaper.

Just a comment on this, there is an idea of a "self-selection" bias. This is a forum to discuss the phone and when are people most likely to discuss something? When they have a complaint. There are likely millions of perfectly good Nexus 4s out there with owners who are blissfully unaware of what XDA is (or even what RMA means).
If you go into any forum and base your picture on complaints in a product forum youd think everything was garbage. Look at Apple forums, youd think Iphones and Ipads are nothing but terrible batteries, rattles and light bleed.
The reason your phone is good is the same reason my phone is good. The vast majority of Nexus 4s are quality.

Dunno what they mean but its still always a better value to get it from the play store, then you are not locked into the contract. You can use ST as an MNVO and get the same signal you would with T-Mobile but for $25 less (comparing to the contract plan) a month. Tell them your phone is scratched and you need a new one. -.-
Sent from my Nexus 4 using Tapatalk 2
Go ahead and lie and tell them a bunch of other reasons why you want to return the phone. You are only returning it because you scratched it. Quote from your first post...
"Recently my Nexus 4 got scuffed but I'm not sure how. Should I return the phone as it also rattles with minimal shaking and was made in January despite it being bought just around 4 days ago. This is the first phone I've scratched and I am horrified. It wasn't even me who did it, my mother dropped it while I was showing her it but no damage occured . The scuff then happened later for no apparent reason.
I love the phone and hate to lie and send the phone back but I could say it was also down to the rattling I was returning it?
What should I do?"
Your post admits you are only returning it because of the scratches and that maybe you can use the fact that it rattles to justify the return. You stated you "hate to lie" and "What should I do" in an attempt to get the RMA justified by the users of this forum becuase you KNOW it's wrong. All the users told you it was wrong but you're going to lie anyways. You already heard that many of the phones rattle a bit...that's the way it was designed and not a valid reason for a return. When Google gets it back and examines it, they will see it's more than normal wear and tear and charge you credit card...and rightfully so.
I would just tell them that you accidentally damaged the phone and you want them to pay for it. And tell them its all their fault because they made it too fragile.
Tell them you like to RMA your mother for dropping your phone and scratching it.

Actually this is the OP's second thread about this same subject, he damaged the phone and wants Google to replace it for free. For the life of me I don't know why people start these threads, if you damaged your phone and want a free replacement then just do it and keep your mouth shut about it. No one here is going to give you absolution for your sins. Get your free replacement and then go to a priest and admit your sins, he'll make you say 10 Hail Mary's and then you can feel good about what your doing.

HTC still cant iron out those build issues.

My misses just got her HTC ONE for her upgrade as she likes mine.
She got the black one and i noticed they still have issues with the speaker grills not sitting right.
Love my phone and its been great ( performance wise and no issues technically ) and she likes hers, but I'd have thought by now they'd have ironed out these silly issues.
She hasn't noticed it and it's gone straight into a case so she isn't bothered, I'm just surprised about this.
They're only issues if you allow them to be issues. Seriously, it's only a issue if the grill is hanging off lol
Quality control is quality control. Don't get me wrong. I love HTC. But they should get their **** together if they want to be world beaters.

When you pay for a phone that's this expensive, you should be allowed to ask for perfection.
Although i don't let it bother me, i still sometimes see the grill and wish they had fixed it.
I just got my second One and it's in worse shape than the first One. The first was actually pretty good, build wise, I exchanged it for the camera issue. Now I have a phone with a couple of build issues and the camera issue is still there. I shouldn't have returned my first One

Although I do understand where you are coming from, people put these phones together. Unless the people are perfect, there's no way the phone is gonna be perfect.
TBH, though, they're not that far off. They really aren't. I wouldnt mind but they done the hard part spot on, carve the aluminium etc etc.
It woudn't take all that much to fix the grill issue.
My phone does have a slightly rough edge to the screen and the speaker grill a the top has the gap a bit. I just think to myself, let them dry longer or, use better glue, or a bit more of it and apply some even pressure around the edges lol.
For a company that has build a damn good phone, it aint rocket science.

TBH, though, they're not that far off. They really aren't. I wouldnt mind but they done the hard part spot on, carve the aluminium etc etc.
It woudn't take all that much to fix the grill issue.

The one is designed and manufactured to be as thin as possible. On top of that they also implemented their 'zero gap' design. If you read some of the teardown threads, it's assembled in a way that allows zero room for error. Taking into account the fact that most people who receive a One that they consider to be perfect don't usually post about it at all, I'd say the actual defects of the one are a much smaller percentage than they appear to be on XDA.
Where HTC really impresses me is the fact that they seem to be 100% willing to warranty any device with any build quality issue. Obviously they should, after advertising a premium device with no gap and superior build quality to plastic phones. However, what major companies should do, and what they really do are not always the same. They can not promise you a perfect phone, but they are willing to replace it until you receive on that satisfies you.
Where they fail, is with that replacement device. Any mass produced product is going to have defects, and some will make it past quality control, this is inevitable. But devices going to customers who have already sent in devices due to build quality issues should have added levels of quality control, to ensure no one gets two bad phone. That would save them a lot of negative publicity.

Just thought I'd update here. So far I'm going to be on my fourth warranty exchange in less than 3 weeks. The second I got had USB port issues. The one ingot today had this weird glue around the top speaker grill and the grill looked like it wasn't even on straight. And the top speaker didnt even work. The build quality was sub par. Not acceptable. Called right away and they are overnighting me another tomorrow. Hopefully this one is accetable. If not I'm done with HTC. Has anyone had some kind of glue type substance around the grills or where the gaps are. I mean why do they think they can send me this and call is acceptable. ?? Sorry I didn't like spending hours on the phone. Most of it was correcting and issue the first rep made by not even processing the order. Tmobile USA. Come on.

Dude I'm dealing with the same issue with tmobile, it's not htc it's tmobile sending out bad refurbished models I'm waiting on my third one and then I'm giving up. They don't seem to get it that the speaker grills have glue sticking out or it looks chipped inbetween the grill and plastic. If the new one I get is the same I'm going to take pictures and post all over tmobile support advising to people thats what tmobile calls acceptable. They suggested me going eip for a new phone, they just want money and don't seem to care that I paid in full for a faulty device, my defects didn't start showing up till after the first 30 days passed, and I bet they are going to lag on the update as well, situations like this make me hate these companies and there policies, they try to sound so cheerful over the phone but they don't understand that we don't deserve to be given broken devices over things we didn't break but sadly we can't do much to over power them they will just be like "again we are sorry for the inconvenience can we send you another" they make me sick

That sucks man. When I first opened the package I saw what at first looked like a scuff. Then I noticed it on both sides of the top speaker grill. I'd say that was the worst built phone I've ever seen. The grills didn't line up, the screen wasn't flush and it looked beat up around the sides. I've never had build issues with other phones. I agree with you. If this one today is bad I'll call customer loyalty and see what else they can get me. I'm not particularly picky but I'd have to be something within the same price range. I know they've offered alternative exchanges before. I think they try not yo as much anymore. 5$ every time you exchange adds up plus they charged me 7.99 for shipping of my charger that was defective. At the end of it all I'm going to see if they'll credit me.

Customer loyalty are the reps that you get transfered to when you want to cancel . they will do almost anything to keep you with the company. They are traditionally called retention but Tmobile calls then customer loyalty. I've had them send me a brand new phone just to keep my business. Although it depends on how long you've been a customer, and I've you have credits given in the past. I used to work for Tmobile years and years ago and used to shadow these guys from time to time.

I haven't had any credits, and I've been a customer for two years but yea I've heard of retention, well I will try them if the next one is faulty again, I really don't want a different device but this stuff is just ridiculous, I have screen lift and a tiny screen leak that htc told me to be dangerous plus the camera issue

Im supposed to get mine today. Hopefully its acceptable enough for me to keep. Yeah I'd hate a different device also. There was a reason I chose this over sgs4.

Update: finally got my replacement in the mail. I'd have to say they really worked on getting me a zero gap device. Everything is aligned. No glue stocking out of the grills. No problems with the buttons. No gaps at all. Software is also running great. I was gonna call right away again if there were issues but I'm actually shocked they came through. Now to see how fast they can get 4.3 out.
