Brand new Nexus 4 and great trouble :/ - Nexus 4 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

hello guys i just bought my nexus and then started playing with it like rooting and stuff ,,
i was using the toolkit as i don't know the commands method
First i Unlocked the bootloader and then root and install recovery and then Installed Paranoid android from the recovery , all was working fine and suddenly the phone got too hot while i was on 3G browsing the internet i thought i should return to stock it may fix it .
i went into toolkit and pressed number 9 for factory image to download after downloading i flashed the factory image through it and then here was no cellular network and the X logo boot took alot of time to load now its restarting all the time after i tried to flash franco kernel again after rooting..
feeling tensed and crying :/

Get stock
https://developers.google.com/android/nexus/images
Then use the flash-all.bat file to wipe it clean, then boot into recovery, and factory reset it and wipe the cache.

i m a total noob can u please tell how to use these command ??

okay
download this
https://dl.google.com/dl/android/aosp/occam-jdq39-factory-345dc199.tgz
Am guessing you know how to extract stuff? If not don't worry install this
http://www.softpedia.com/get/Compression-tools/Universal-Extractor.shtml
right click on the file you've downloaded, and click extract with uniextract and wait till it's finished.
After that go into the folder thats just been extracted. A file there will be called flash-all.bat. Double click on it, and then put your phone into bootloader mode, if you don't know how to do that, turn it off. hold both the volume buttons down and press the power till it turns on, then let go off the power button, you should get to a start screen, then it'll start flashing, don't touch your phone.

Spend a few hours reading up on what you are doing before you brick your device and are not able to return it.

i actually used to flash stuff in galaxy note and used to download mode used in that to flash stock , i dont know how to use commands
i already tried flashing the stock image but the toolkit said that the md5 checksum dont match ...........

I dont recommend using tools, just my opinion, not that we dont appreciate their hard work but its probably better if you learn commands first. What a better time than right now
Follow this guide to get you back to stock, I actually did it this afternoon as I wanted to see if it would help my battery life out of curiosity. It isnt as bad as it looks honest

connect phone in fastbook or simply ?? before doing that

bro that i read earlier ... but right now its 5 am in my country .......coulnt sleep all night now having headaches but still ann a correct my phone

have you got an instant messenger?
how to get into fastboot mode
turn it off. hold both the volume buttons down and press the power till it turns on, then let go off the power button, you should get to a start screen, then it'll start flashing, don't touch your phone.

Jesus.. Toolkits, the "noob excuse", guilt trips, and hand holding requests. If you arent sure what you are doing you should have never done it. There is a library worth of tutorials if you just take the time to actually look, read and learn something.

lol I can actually call myself lucky for flashing a ROM & kernel on my Nexus 7 without reading anything but the threads they're from. Haha.
Good luck on that, maybe you can try downloading Skype so you two could get in touch.

Looks great. Care if I add it to my boot screen page on the site?
Go ahead!!
Added it...
Just attempted this and it went terribly wrong
everything was okay until it tried pushing the logo to my sdcard (which failed with "permission denied") - it then said it couldn't copy the file from sdcard because it didn't exist.
I proceeded to unmount the sdcard from the phone and try it again which seemed to work. I shut the phone down and when I attempted to turn it back on it just remained off... I was able to get into download mode with odin 1-click and flash to stock (thank God).
- Serendipity 5.7
- I9000 .rar package
- logo_ATNT.jpg < 20K
was it the unmounting that did the trick? and can I just manually move the file onto /mnt/sdcard/ and edit the .bat file to skip the push?
Worked perfectly for me I love the nexus boot screen with my nexus boot animation Thank you connexion

I'm not sure but it sounds like you didn't make sure that busy box was installed. As for not turning back on, I'm surprised at that. I soft bricked a vibrant building the vibrant files and got out of it but that was my fault pulling the usb cable out accidentally before ODIN was done. The answer to your question is yes, you can just flash the param.lfs tar file, verify busy box apk is installed and so is busy box, then just manually move the file. The script is built for simplicity. I'm sorry you had trouble.

Also, you did let the phone try to boot for a sec right? In some cases when you don't have a boot screen after the flash you won't get a dirty pixel screen but it will be black for the 5-10 seconds it attempts to show you whats there. I just want to make sure you were not prematurely turning the phone off.

yeah, i attempted to turn back on twice (hold power for about 3-4 seconds, wait about 10) after it seemingly succeeded - I pulled battery in between jic.
the .bat file said busybox install failed because it was already installed... how else can I verify that bb is installed?
I'm going to try again once I get another ROM back on my phone because I really want to get at&t off my phone

That will install the application on the phone. But, before you finish the rest of the batch script, you must open the app on the phone and make sure it's installed. It will look and tell you. If it's not click install busybox. When it's done, continue with the batch script. I'd start fresh also btw. Reflash with ODIN on the tar package then launch the script.

[Q] How bricked is my I9505? (reward offered for successful salvage!)

Hello friends.
I installed Xposed (http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1574401) and now my shiny new S4 won't boot (stuck at Samsung logo).
According to the docs, I need only copy /system/bin/app_process.orig back to /system/bin/app_process but alas I cannot because my stock recovery is not letting me adb shell, reporting the device is offline. Note that adb devices shows the device as connected but offline.
Since there's no working TWRP or CWM (yet!!) I think I'm stuck.
If someone else can unlock me in the mean time. I'll buy you a beer or TWENTY. That's a promise.
Don't know whether it still works, but other SS phones have a save mode boot.
To enter it, you have to power off your phone first. Next, turn it on while holding the menu button and keep menu pressed until you see your homescreen.
hope it works.
Thanks for the reply! Nope. Tried the home button and the menu button. No cigar.
can you enter download mode?
Try and find something like the nexus root tool kit.....maybe there is one like it for Galaxy phones.
Its a great tool for such a thing, it helps you root, un root, lock, unlock, flash and re flash stock, it aslo lets you pick if phone is working as normal or is it soft bricked., and thats what saved my nexus 7 and 10 lol was stuck with bootloops and not able to get into recovery mode.
Anyway have a look see if there is something like that but for Samsung Galaxy.
Have a look at this, used it to flash s3 in the past, unsure what it can do s4 way though. http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1703488
Thanks for replies.
Yes! I can get into download mode.
There is an S4 toolkit but it's early days and apparently doesn't actually work. I figure with time, a custom recovery will emerge and that will save the day. I'm sure I don't need to explain that I would like this fixed NOW without waiting tho!

Download firmware for Odin from Samsung-Updates or use Pre-Rooted OFFICIAL Rom from here
Turn OFF your phone, press&hold POWER+HOME+VOL_DOWN to enter Odin/Download Mode.
Connect your phone to the computer, use Odin3 v3.04 , load firmware as PDA, make sure that ONLY AutoReboot&F.Reset Time is ticked and click START.
After 5 minutes, all done, it should be back to life...

Just flash a Official stock firmware and you will boot normally again.
Download a stock firmware
Download odin
Enter download mode in you unit by pressing power and volume down and home button.
Connect the device to your pc, wait for drivers to install.
Select your unzipped firmware (yeah the .md5 file) in the PDA section
Now start flashing and wait...your phone should boot as normal.
That is about it
no donation required btw...
download mode is great news. now get odin + stock firmware and flash your s4 back to life be aware, that all your data is most likely to be lost in the process.
a small price to pay if you ask me.
As others said, if you can get to download mode then be ready to have babies and fall in love with Odin, another life saver.

You just got a donation my friend!
Didn't try the prerooted... didn't see it for I9505XXUAMDF. Still, I'm used Chainfire's root and I'm back in business. No apps or data were wiped after the flash either, much to my surprise.
Waiting now for a working recovery and a decent ROM, like a Paranoid Android or CM10.1 port. In the mean time, I'm putting up with the TouchWiz jank + 320 DPI in spite of the odd scaling of some apps.
Cheers.

There's XXUAMDF on the list but it will give you just basic root permissions, no access to the system... In your case better use CF as it will give you full access..
Anyway, be more careful in future and enjoy it
S4 i9500 (I9500XXUAMDK with root) has soft brick
Dear friends. I would like your help, if possible! Please!
I did the actualization on my S4 i9500 (I9500XXUAMDK, with root) and after this, I was trying to put more space in sdcard (editing vold fstab files to try to change extSdCard into sdcard).
During this process, appeared a message on the phone about one error there is in sdcard and it suggested me to unmount the sdcard to try solve the problem. So, when I click yes, the phone froze and then I turned it off, but it stock now in Sangung Logo and go to recovery mode. In recovery mode I tryed to clear/mount/unmount any file, but it returns with error to mount any directories.
I think the phone has the files or some partition corrupted!!! . I can access it through ODIN and adb shell as well. There is (in adb commands) a command to fix the partition? How can I do?
With ODIN, I tried to re-install the original FW. It did well (complete the re-install perfectly), but the phone cant finish the instalation after this, because it cant mount anything, and goes to recovery mode with many messages about that it cant mount directories (list a vary directories that wasnt mounted correct).
Everything I try to do, the phones (in recovery mode) returns "cant mount... or error to mount something". I cant too clear cache, format /sdcard or other directory, or reset it to the factory data as well (because I think, the system cant mount any directories).
Somebody had this problem? or could help me to solve it, please!!!
Tks in advance!
Barros

[Q] New Problem! Need help!

Hey guys,
So I tried to take my phone to the Samsung experience store today to try and fix my previous issues. the person tried to reset the firmware on it because I am not getting a baseband or IMEI at all (shows baseband unkwon and IMEI null/null). I may have caused this myself by the way when i was playing around with different firmwares and did not back up EFS ever.
Anyway, Now i am stuck with this:
SGH-I337 galaxy S4
Version: 4.4.4
Build: I337UCUFNJ4
Baseband Unknown....
I am not sure what I need to do in order force IMEI back onto phone I tried rooting and playing with EFS, but the phone seems to not get rooted either via motochopper.
WHAT CAN I DO NEXT ?!? Need some if your brilliant minds here please.
By the way, the person at Samsung checked by IMEI to make sure it wasnt blacklisted or reported stolen or anything so that is not the issue.

Okay well everyone else is saying never flash a pit file but I ran into the same problem and I actually had to flash a pit file BUT you're only able to fo it on MK2 SO FIRST odin back to a fresh install of NB1 uncheck the reboot option in odin after the firmware finishes and says reset on odin unplug youre cable remove youre battery and stick it back in then use the VOLUME UP HOME AND POWER KEY you will see an android with a progress bar GET READY after its done the phone will reboot hold up the volume and home it will reboot into android recovery and then use you're volume keys scroll down to wipe data/factory reset and wipe cache partition after that hit reboot system now we're done with that part this is the second part PART 2 after the phone fully boots up and youre at the welcome screen power off the device go into download mode volume down home and power this is where we are able to DOWNGRADE TO MK2 ITS ONLY POSSIBLE FROM NB1 TO MK2 ONLY HEAD OVER TO THIS THREAD http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2663545 and download two files JFLTE_USA_ATT_16G.pit that's going to be youre pit file and then you need the MK2 firmware AP_I337UCUEMK2_.tar.md5 I'll give you some time to download them it takes a little time........Okay we ready? Good now load up the two files the pit file in the PIT and the Firmware in the AP NOTE you will see now the repartition box checked LEAVE IT its because of the pit file that its checked! Now we are going to uncheck the auto reboot like we did earlier after Odin says phone reset unplug cable remove battery stick it back in and same thing volume up home power then wipe data factory reset and cache partition then reboot phone should boot up to MK2 now the only thing thats not working at this point is the wifi dont worry about that go through the setup process dont worry about any of youre information we dont care at this point go into settings and check and see if all of youre stuff is back baseband imei everything if it is then great thats what we wanted now we can go back into download mode and use odin and upgrade back to NB1 WE'RE DONE! I will def. try this! For the first part, I am already on NB1, so I need to do it again? OR can I skip straight to step 2? (P.s, when i flashed NB1, I didnt follow this whole procedure ( flashing, then resetting etc.) i simply jus flashed it as per Odin.
You can try as-is
You may not have to re-do it, you could probably go ahead and just skip to part two I just always recommend doing a clean flash but if it doesn't work then just simply go back and try that

Thank you for your post. I soft bricked my S5 (bootloop) and will keep this in mind. For now I am at home and want to see if I can figure it myself. I need help to push a working ROM to my device SD card. I found a toolkit on root page http://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=64744448&postcount=2
***Is there a tutorial that can help me know how to use the toolkit?

check that out if you werent previously rooted if you were previously rooted then try this
Use Odin to flash the lollipop kernel you were using. Then go into the stock recovery (hold Home + Vol UP and Power) and clear the cache and reboot. If that doesn't work, go back into the stock recovery, clear cache and select factory reset, then reboot. That should allow MOAR (whatever rom you want i stole this post from one of my other topics about when i softbricked mine) to boot, then you can reinstall SafeStrap Lollipop.
If you're getting any kind of logo screen showing up on boot, you are only "soft" bricked (not "hard" or permanently bricked) and you can fix it easily.
If you're only getting a logo, try what Veid71 said in the post above mine. If that doesn't work, then worst case you just need to flash a factory restore image with Odin and start over.
A word of caution, though: if your firmware version was updated to BOE1, BOG5, BOK3, do NOT flash an earlier factory image or you will brick because after BOD the bootloader was locked and you can't downgrade it.

I get the logo screen like it is turning on then it goes to recovery mode options. I can get to Download mode and Odin has a blue port connection but my Win8 and Win7 PCs do not see the device at all, so I cant' flash in Odin. Background - I attempted to root using jrkruse method and got stuck and never rooted. Anyone know a way around this maybe using the external SD card?

When it boots into the recovery mode options, try clearing cache and then reboot. If that doesn't work, do it again, clearing cache and also factory reset. That may allow your phone to boot back up normally.
The SDcard Unbrick method is only needed if your phone cannot boot into Download mode. In this case, it wouldn't help you because your phone is functioning in that regard.
When you have the phone in Download mode, your computer won't show it as a device in "My Computer" because it's not connected as a media device., but software that knows how to look for it can see it. If Odin is lighting up blue in the first ID:COM box, it IS seeing the phone and you will be able to flash to it.
If you're to a point where you need to flash a factory restore image, click the "AP" button in Odin to select it. The image needs to be one that ends with a file extension "tar.md5", or Odin can't see it. If what you've downloaded is a zip archive, the image is inside that and you need to extract it first. Use the image in "step 2" of the root thread
I figured out what went wrong from your response thanks! I had saved the .tar.md5 on the external SD card rather than pc. Now attempting to re-root, .bat sees device but doesn't root.

yeah its really annoying youll have to unplug and plug it back in and x out of the thing like 20 times before it acutually does it

Tried FlashFire twice , no good...

I have a S4, I337 AT&T device and I think I bricked it by trying to install TWRP, it didn't work... I was trying Muniz_ri's "Update to i337 ok2 5.0.1 and keep root", I couldn't get the Flashfire to load, lots of stuff about rooting and no Supersu something... Any help..?
If you i337 is not on mdl or mdb bootloader you can not install TWRP.
If you phone is brick how could you install the flash fire?
Flashfire works well with stock rom. Are you on custom rom?
In note section of the muniz_is post , the #4 stated that "4. If you are not already rooted (or to unbrick) you must first flash the I337UCUFNB1_Rootable_Full_Odin.tar (use Odin's PDA slot (AP in Odin v3.09+), root with Towelroot, then proceed with the above process." . Did you follow that step?

I'm on 5.0.1 Lollipop, the second one From Aug 11 OTA by the seller I bought it from.... I was new to android and didn't know there was a download mode....
The baseband version is: I think it is called I337OCOG0C4... It is the stock rom that came on the phone.... I can't find the stock ROM to redo it( try to at least...) It's on 0C4... I AM rooted , by Kingroot... Verification says so.... Two different versifiers... When I go to flash..., it comes up with that message... I tried removing Busy box and reinstalling it... it was ok... I reinstalled Safestrap .... It loaded fine...
When I got to NC1 flash..., it says it can't see busy box or safestrap, either one might have a problem... They both loaded fine..... I tried flashing the Tar from above... Odin just sat there and finally said fail... twice.... I think the corruption is hurting the ability to enter recovery on the phone.... I can't enter "Recovery Mode" on the phone... It is damaged.... I thought flashing could do it...

If you followed Muniz_is instruction step by step I don't think you should have a problem.
I used SS (safestrap) when I was in kit-kat alot but not anymore. It is tricky to use SS in lollipop. So I can not give you any comment on using SS. I use flashfire app instead.
So every time I want to install the custom rom, I followed Muniz_is instructions. Odin the NB1, use towelroot to root, install flashfire and flash the rooted OC4, install flashfire again and then flash the custom rom.
Muniz_is post is updated to OK2 but I am still using the OC4 files that posted previously. If you want to stay on OC4 do let me know.
What do you mean you can not enter recovery mode? I am sure you know the key sequence (press power+home+volume up) for recovery mode. If your phone is bricked, then you need to press the same keys for at least 10 sec and then let the power button go but keep pressing the home+volume-up until you felt the phone vibrate and see the small blue label at the top of the screen.
To use the odin you have to be in the download mode. To get to the download mode you need to press power+home+volume-down.

Your recovery mode probably works fine.... Mine is corrupt... You must use Recovery mode in Odin... I tried... Failed twice... Tried 4 other .tar's.... No good... A FAIL for each... I guess you have to have Recovery Mode just to allow the device to do anything... I DO appreciate you guys and ALL of your efforts ...... Maybe we could put my device on Android Studio and look at what is hurting it... I'd love that....
I had got myself into same mess in early January 2016 but I got out and all is working perfectly fine with me. Can you successfully get your i337 into download mode? if YES contact me via PM and I can tell you exact steps I performed to get myself back into fully working condition. Believe me it's simple steps not rocket science - just that one needs to perform very carefully.
To get to the download mode you need to press power+home+volume-down.

Neither device will boot into Recovery mode... It gives 5 or 6 lines of stuff..., then freezes up... I can release it to use the phone... I'd like to try using Android Studio to see what can be done...
Isn't there a "Format" system and re-installation plan I can use..., like doing a computers hard drive..?
Recovery mode is different - it is WAY different - it will never boot into that mode as memory is messed up with wrong code.
I AM ASKING YOU TO GET IT INTO DOWNLOAD MODE - to get into download mode - the messed code is not executed....Try to get into DOWNLOAD MODE - i am 100% sure - it will go into download mode....It should....

I have told you....." I pressed up vol, home and start at the same time... That should have started Recovery Mode... It didn't... It froze up at the little green man screen...."
MY DOWNLOAD MODE IS CORRUPT..... I can't figure another way around this....
If someone knew how to view the devices program on Android Studio..., MAYBE something could be done with the programming.... I'm not sure if a "Cut and Paste " would work on there... I guess I need to get a book on Android Studio... I already have it ( Android Studio SDK ) on my computer....
Any one here can tell me how to run it..?
Ok.
can you tell me what exactly happens when you press power+home+volume-down?
How did u arrive to conclusion that your download mode is corrupted?

It froze up.... It stopped moving foward to the lower potion of the Recovery program.... At the bottom..., you can choose the different ways to manipulate the program... Mine, both phone stop at the processing sign in....
It will require something more than a few buttons being pressed.... I'll have to learn to use the Android Studio and either rebuild the program from within or to reprogram it from outside..., like with a .tar flash....

I reflashed an At&t .pit file ( using Odin) and it rebuilt my file ( partition) for Recovery mode... Not sure how it did it... Now when I CAN get into recovery mode..., it doesn't recognize the SD card so I can't use the tools in Recovery mode to change the rom to something earlier, like Muniz_ri did in one of his wonderful fixes... (Double thanks Muniz_ri..)
Once Odin sees my device..., I set it up yo start a Muniz_ri renewing rom ( I337UCUFNB1_TWROOTABLE_FULL_ODIN.tar.md5 ) and it gets to "system.img.ext4" about 10% into it and then it freezes up....
Anyone have any ideas..?
If u are able to get to download mode - I strongly recommend first you flash ONLY Stock Partition file.
Then again reboot in download mode and then try the FNB1 file....this may work...but before all this flash proper pit file - refer to http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2496517
stock partition file(s) are available on xda - search and download....
