Complete return to stock woes - Acer Iconia A500

Hey peeps
Ok so here's what I had:
A500 with ICS unlocked bootloader, CWM 10.1 and Thor recovery.
I've upgraded to a Samsung note and now want to flick off my A500. But before I do that I need to return to complete stock. I followed another websites guide (stupid me XDA all the way!) and now ended up in a pickle!
What the other website recommended was to download the OTA ICS (which I already had) and flash it like a normal ROM. I did that and the bootloader is still unlocked and I am not able to gain root on the custom ROM to repair the recovery (which gives me the little android on his back with red "!").
So here's where things get tricky. I can't regain root because ADB isn't detecting my device. I've tried every tool in blackthunders bag of tricks and they all come back saying "Done" but they don't actually work. I do have ATX mode and fastboot.
Can someone please help me figure out how to:
Get ADB working
Load stock bootloader
Get stock recovery back?
Thanks in advance!
PS: I've tried searching the forums and followed a number of threads and how to's but none seem to work for me

Ok update on this. I'm such a moron! I removed ADB drivers and re-installed. Once I got ADB working I simply used afterota (forgot I had it!) to flash stock and then do the update.zip trick

[Q] Clockworkmod Recovery Problem.

I have had my eee pad transformer B70 running custom roms for a while, but yesterday I decided to use rom manage to flash a newer version of clockwork mod. Since then whenever I reboot I am taken straight into clockwork mod recovery. and i am also unable to install anything through it. The only way i can properly boot into android is by holding volume - on boot. I found out that this version of clockwork mod (5.5.0.4) is buggy and that I needed to flash a custom recovery like this one, http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1213723 . The problem is that i'm not very tech savy and I need detailed step by step instructions on how to flash it.(If someone could link a vid or pics that would be great)
Thanks in advance.

Thanks but the problem is that im not sure how to use adb.
Then you should read about ADB.
I managed to find some instructions on how to use adb now. I should be able to fix this finally. Thanks for the link above.
It took me long enough but I finally managed to fix it. Turned out that I was typing something wrong into cmd.

[Q] Using afterOTA to update bootloader and nothing changed?

I read and re-read the development thread for AfterOTA and I found nothing on this problem. I will outlay the steps I took. I downloaded AfterOTA lite v1.7 and connected my tab to it and saved the txt file. (I can list the full output if needed) the Bootloader was as follows:
bootloader: 0.03.0X-HC
Android Build: FLEXREAPER RF1_rv1_Acer_AV041_A500_1.031_033_041.00_CUS_WW_GEN1
I booted into Recovery and found the version number.
My custom recovery: ClockworkMod Recovery v5.0.0.0(thor2002ro rev1.3.4)
I bought this from a friend and didn't do all the modding myself which I am new to the Iconia a500 (but not new to Rooting, Romming, Recovering) so I am a little in the dark on where to go from here.
I downloaded AfterOTA 1.7 (the Full version) and clicked on the "standard" tab and chose the install "bootloader ICS v 3.14.7 + recovery thor v1.7.3" and clicked the "for 50x"
It shut the tablet down said booting into APX, did the whole thing and at the end it said "complete, you can power down your tablet with the power button and boot back up"
I powered it down it booted up fine but when I reconnected it to afterOTA it dosent read the CPuid (it just says "0") and the bootloader space is blank.
Everything works, I can use it as I normally would but I want to install the new flexreaper and thought I might as well update the Bootloader and recovery to get up to current on everything. Thank you for any help you can give me in understanding what happened and what I may have done wrong. BTW I did disable all antivirus and UAC and rebooted before running AfterOTA.
You're probably ok. You just need to flash a "real" ICS rom like Flexreaper Extreme I would guess.
When you boot your tab, you should see some text in the left corner like "Skirlax_CZ's bootloader version xxxxxx" If you do, then bootloader is probably ok. Boot into your recovery and check your recovery version.
MD
I dont have anything come up when i boot other than a big white acer logo and then it does two smaller acer white logos side by side. Then it does the android boot animation. I booted into recovery and it is thor v5 not the one i had chosen in afterOTA. I just want to know what to do from here. Should i try again or use another method?
I just dont want to flash an ICS Rom without the ICS bootloader.and is there another way other than afterOTA to check the boot loader version?

Well, after ota didn't work then. You should have seen the txt immediately on boot. (the split acer tells me it's a HC modified ICS kernel in the rom).
You could try manually flashing the bootloader with NVFlash.
My theory, is that you should install the OTA/Full version of ICS. This will install the stock bootloader, then, you can run the after OTA app. Reason being, is that my theory is that the real ICS bootloader creates something the HC BL doesn't. And when you try NVFlashing the unlocked bootloader, it just doesn't take. It's been happening several times recently.
Is there a forum guide on installing the OTA/full version of ICS? Would I basically bring it to stock bootloader and ROM then use AfterOTA to flash the new bootloader and recovery? Sorry for the n00bish questions, every device seems to use different methods and when I didn't start with the thing until after someone else did the initial stuff I dont want to mess it up, this is a really nice tablet. Thanks for the help, You guys are the best on here.
Yep, you are basically taking it back to stock then using afterOTA to install the new bootloaders but most importantly get root access and a new open recovery...
Is the best way to go stock by using afterOTA? Or should I just try a different method on the forums?
It clearly states on AfterOTA's first post that it does not work on custom roms and only the OTA so yes, download the ota ruu and install it. Then run afterota and you will be able to install a custom rom after that. Or use blackthunders apx tool to update the bootloader.
yes, that was an over sight on my part, I was excited to update everything so easily. where/what is the OTA RUU ? sorry to be a pain but if you could just point me to a forum guide on going completely stock I would appreciate it. I don't see anywhere to get the OTA update.zip file I need to flash, I found this here http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1113878 is this the post I need? and do I need the update or the full package? does it matter if I use the honeycomb full package if I am just going to use afterOTA to install an ICS bootloader and recovery?

[Q] Can't Enter Recovery Mode to do anything

Hi,
I need a little help as I am a complete noob and have just crash landed into the world of Rooted Roms.
I recently rooted my stock 4.0.3 ICS rom for my Iconia tab A500, using blackthund3r_ICS_Root_6.0. It worked brilliantly as far as I can tell. The Superuser function is there and I even deleted some of the annoying stock games that are on the stock ROM.
As the next step, I installed the Acer Recovery
However, I am interested in trying a leaner custom ROM in order to improve the performance of my tab, so I downloaded the Acer Recovery Installer from the Play store. I chose the Recovery version CWM rev1.7 by thor2002ro (for ICS Bootloader) and clicked on the install Recovery Image.
When I clicked on the Reboot into recovery mode because I wanted to back up my ROM and eventually install a leaner faster ROM, I got the following error message:
Booting recovery kernel image
Recovery verified failed ...
Anyone have any suggestions to help me out?
Thanks in advance for your help and putting up with my Noobish ways!!!!

sounds like your rooted correctly if u cud install the recovery file, but u should use thors cwm 1.7.3 to flash roms because it supports aroma installer which the newer roms use. did u get message from acer RI saying recovery installed?
u can find cwm 1.7.3 by thor here .
just put the zip from that link on ur sd card
if u can get into the recovery you installed.
choose install zip from sd in your cwm menus and select the zip.
let it finish then reboot.
viola! you have updated your recovery and shud be able to make the backup u need.
it is what i used.
if u cant get into recovery yet try turning off your tab
power it on and hold the volume down button.( the volume rocker side closest to the power button)
hold them to u see the white righting in the upper right corner of your acer screen
if u get in, update.
if u still cant get into recovery. try one of those other recoveries
try to install thors cwm 1.7.3 zip from there.
if u like i cud point u to some roms ive tried, since we have the same tab. happy to help.
Hi shadowmikeshadow;41918411
I will give it a go and tell you if it worked. Thanks for your advice. After all I could use all the help I can get. I am totally new and clueless to this whole rooting thing. I've only had my tablet for about 9 months and I got tired of all the lags and thought it was time to root and get rid of all the bloatware.
I really appreciate all the support you profis out there are offering. In general this whole site is GREAT!!!!!
np man im happy to help. well get u goin for sure
also couldnt hurt to double check your root with root checker(free app) could be making ur AcerRI not work correctly
and if u still cant get it to work and u are rooted correct theres still more we can do. its just more complex so try those first..
Do I have to do anything with this Recovery zip file that you suggested. I put it on my SD card and rebooted in Recovery mode and I still get the same error.
Please keep in mind I am complete Noob at this.
Thanks.
So if u can't get any recovery working install that zip via adb.
u can download this so u won't need android sdk.
follow all the instructions on the platformer page.
If everything went OK and adb sees your device
Follow this guide for adb here
but use the recovery from the zip in earlier reply.
Still desperate

Hi Everyone,
As of posting this original thread above I am still stuck in limbo. I have read, read, and read and am more confused then ever.
There are so many suggestions out there and I dont know what to do.
My problem is this: I have no way to enter the recovery mode to do anything (flash a new ROM or Stock)
If someone out there has the time and patience to help me and can talk me through step by step how to fix this problem, it would be highly appreciated.
Thanks for your understanding and support.

[Q] Need help removing CWM from N4

Ok guys, so I'm gonna need some serious help here! (rookie speaking)
My N4 is currently on stock 4.4.4. I got the 5.0 OTA update, downloaded it, but then when it was time to apply it the phone went into clockworkmod fastboot (I never realized it was there, once I asked a friend to root my phone but he just told me he couldn't finish the process).
So, I am currently struggling with trying to remove CWM altogether. I use ubuntu 12.04, have adb access and did successfully order it to go into reboot bootloader, but that was it. Couldn't get past that. I also did try to, through CWM's boot interface do a sideload, which I commanded via terminal with the .zip file I downloaded from the google developer website for my phone, but at the end it just said "installation aborted". How do I even get past that? Or how do I get the flash-all.sh script to run successfully? I'm stuck! (and obviously not very knowledgeable on this).
Any help is welcome, not afraid of bricking (lol, jk, yes I am).
UPDATE: As I was typing the aforementioned post, I tried all the format options within CWB recovery mode and now the phone is forever stuck on the google logo screen. I think I've officially bricked my phone. Any workaround this or is gone forever?
The firmware update to 5.0 will wipe out CWM and remove Root if you had it. Please see [INFO] Nexus 4 OTA Help-Desk
Also for your reference, should you need it Understanding the Android world before rooting your LG Nexus
If you do at all consider rooting again, please see [Guide] Ultimate Nexus 4 Root Guide
If you are still stuck, please post in [HELP THREAD] nexus4 Ask any question. and one of the experts will be happy to help.
FIXED
Was able to wipe everything out and flash a stock recovery image from google after borrowing a friend's computer with Windows and using SkipSoft Unified Android Toolkit v1.2.8.
Now successfully running Lollipop on my N4, relocked bootloader and don't plan on unlocking it ever again! Phew!

a501 - not bricked but can't load bootloader

[EDIT: Solved!]
First post, and many thanks for the wisdom in these forums.
I'm no n00b, I've been an infrastructure admin for 16 years, rooted over a dozen android phones from gingerbread to latest, jailbroken iPhones, in fact I pride myself on rescuing servers from HDD crashes, rebuilding boot records, etc. Point is, I can take the technical heat and I know how to look it up in XDA and TegraOwners.
Got an a501 from a dude real cheap, stock 3.2 HC won't OTA any further.
1. I used the downgrade to 3.01 method. As you all know, it's just an update.zip to regress to some janky 3.01 HC ROM.
2. Then I rooted.
3. Then I installed Acer Recovery Installer (now at v.3.03) which, after a bunch of force-closes, manages to install "CWM rv1.7 by thor2002ro"
I know I need to flash an unlockable bootloader, but there are always partition errors and nvflash always stalls...
- My a501 is not bricked, I can always get back into the half-broken 3.01 rom
- my CWM recovery is fine and in fact I've managed to flash a TWRP 2.10 from in CWM and I'm back on CWM.
- Using volume up and power, I can no longer get the custom acer update mode which accepts update.zip
- I have my CPUID and SBK. I have any number of roms and flash tools at my disposal.
Any thoughts? I read somewhere about an EUU to restore the partitioning... not sure how to proceed.
I just want fastboot so I can sideload a ROM and GAPPS!!!
HAHA! Solved using
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2049778
Talk about RTFM. I was going crazy there!
Still, many thanks to those who worked so hard on all this.
