[Q] Can't Enter Recovery Mode to do anything - Acer Iconia A500

Hi,
I need a little help as I am a complete noob and have just crash landed into the world of Rooted Roms.
I recently rooted my stock 4.0.3 ICS rom for my Iconia tab A500, using blackthund3r_ICS_Root_6.0. It worked brilliantly as far as I can tell. The Superuser function is there and I even deleted some of the annoying stock games that are on the stock ROM.
As the next step, I installed the Acer Recovery
However, I am interested in trying a leaner custom ROM in order to improve the performance of my tab, so I downloaded the Acer Recovery Installer from the Play store. I chose the Recovery version CWM rev1.7 by thor2002ro (for ICS Bootloader) and clicked on the install Recovery Image.
When I clicked on the Reboot into recovery mode because I wanted to back up my ROM and eventually install a leaner faster ROM, I got the following error message:
Booting recovery kernel image
Recovery verified failed ...
Anyone have any suggestions to help me out?
Thanks in advance for your help and putting up with my Noobish ways!!!!

sounds like your rooted correctly if u cud install the recovery file, but u should use thors cwm 1.7.3 to flash roms because it supports aroma installer which the newer roms use. did u get message from acer RI saying recovery installed?
u can find cwm 1.7.3 by thor here .
just put the zip from that link on ur sd card
if u can get into the recovery you installed.
choose install zip from sd in your cwm menus and select the zip.
let it finish then reboot.
viola! you have updated your recovery and shud be able to make the backup u need.
it is what i used.
if u cant get into recovery yet try turning off your tab
power it on and hold the volume down button.( the volume rocker side closest to the power button)
hold them to u see the white righting in the upper right corner of your acer screen
if u get in, update.
if u still cant get into recovery. try one of those other recoveries
try to install thors cwm 1.7.3 zip from there.
if u like i cud point u to some roms ive tried, since we have the same tab. happy to help.

Hi shadowmikeshadow;41918411
I will give it a go and tell you if it worked. Thanks for your advice. After all I could use all the help I can get. I am totally new and clueless to this whole rooting thing. I've only had my tablet for about 9 months and I got tired of all the lags and thought it was time to root and get rid of all the bloatware.
I really appreciate all the support you profis out there are offering. In general this whole site is GREAT!!!!!

np man im happy to help. well get u goin for sure

also couldnt hurt to double check your root with root checker(free app) could be making ur AcerRI not work correctly
and if u still cant get it to work and u are rooted correct theres still more we can do. its just more complex so try those first..

Do I have to do anything with this Recovery zip file that you suggested. I put it on my SD card and rebooted in Recovery mode and I still get the same error.
Please keep in mind I am complete Noob at this.
Thanks.

So if u can't get any recovery working install that zip via adb.
u can download this so u won't need android sdk.
follow all the instructions on the platformer page.
If everything went OK and adb sees your device
Follow this guide for adb here
but use the recovery from the zip in earlier reply.

Still desperate

Hi Everyone,
As of posting this original thread above I am still stuck in limbo. I have read, read, and read and am more confused then ever.
There are so many suggestions out there and I dont know what to do.
My problem is this: I have no way to enter the recovery mode to do anything (flash a new ROM or Stock)
If someone out there has the time and patience to help me and can talk me through step by step how to fix this problem, it would be highly appreciated.
Thanks for your understanding and support.

cant update

Hi guys i know this question has been asked several times before but i didnt find that tread but im running stock 3.2 rooted right.
Is there any update of 3.2 fahable with recovery i know there is one way to do it but you have to follow a lot of steps and it seems very risky to me.
Thanks for your help in advance
When Acer pushed the 3.2 update, they pushed a new bootloader along with it. Caused some issues. Mainly, either loss of a previous root, or no root with 3.2
Fortunately, the following thread tells you how to revert it to a previous version. I would advise step 2.
Also, I would download the files you need. 1. Iconia root, 2. Acer Recovery, 3. Download a rom you would like to install. Like Honeylicious (500)
After you follow step 2 on
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1276227
Install your Iconia root.apk
Then Install acer recovery.apk
Then, boot to recovery (vol- and Pwr button till you see the text in the upper lt corner) then release.
Follow the instructions that the Rom gave you;
1. Wipe User Data
2. Wipe cach partition
3. Go to Advanced, wipe Delvik
then go back a screen, and "install zip from sd"
Happy motoring
Then, from the acer recovery app, install the "recovery"

[Q] Clockworkmod Recovery Problem.

I have had my eee pad transformer B70 running custom roms for a while, but yesterday I decided to use rom manage to flash a newer version of clockwork mod. Since then whenever I reboot I am taken straight into clockwork mod recovery. and i am also unable to install anything through it. The only way i can properly boot into android is by holding volume - on boot. I found out that this version of clockwork mod (5.5.0.4) is buggy and that I needed to flash a custom recovery like this one, http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1213723 . The problem is that i'm not very tech savy and I need detailed step by step instructions on how to flash it.(If someone could link a vid or pics that would be great)
Thanks in advance.

Thanks but the problem is that im not sure how to use adb.
Then you should read about ADB.
I managed to find some instructions on how to use adb now. I should be able to fix this finally. Thanks for the link above.
It took me long enough but I finally managed to fix it. Turned out that I was typing something wrong into cmd.

Unable to boot into recovery using "Acer Recovery" from market/playstore

Hello. After updating my A500 to the official ICS rom, I easily rooted my tablet succesfully by downloading a program found on this website:
http://forum.tegraowners.com/viewtopic.php?f=30&t=350
Then, I downloaded an app from the market/play store called "Acer Recovery" wich lets you flash CWM recovery (which is built in into the app). The app said it flashed the recovery succesfully. Now, when I press the "boot into recovery" button I get stuck in the Acer logo and on the top left corner it sais in red: Recovery Failed
I would like to flash custom roms. What am I doing wrong?
Many thanks...

Which version of Bootloader are you running? The recovery installer app should tell you when you start it.
Also, which version of Recovery did you try to install?

Thanks for helping me out.
-Bootloader Version: 0.03.12-ICS
I tried installing the two only recoveries avaliable wich are:
-ClockworkMod Recovery rev1.3.4 by thor2002ro
-Stock USA 1.141.07_COM_GEN1 recovery
After flashing any of the two I click on "Reboot into recovery", it reboots but gets stuck in Acer logo and on the top left corner says:
-Recovery verified failed
I have the same problem too and I still couldn't find a way out
Firmware Specs are same as yours
I wonder if there is a simple way out
Anyone can help ?
Thanks

Ok, both of you need to go to this thread and read over the info.
The reason why your recovery "might have failed" is probably because you didn't delete a certain file from your rom before you flashed your CWM. That is... "recovery.from.boot.p" in the system folder.
If you don't, every time you reboot your will lose your CWM.
Anyhow, read this thread. Everything you need is there.
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1622425
And if you;re going to install some ICS Customs in the future, I advise you install a patched unlocked bootloader.
EDIT: One more important thing. Before you folks go off flashing and everything, PLEASE... Get your UID number now, and write it down in a safe place (like the box your tablet came in . If you tab gets borked up, it's the only thing that'll save it.

As MD stated be sure to read that thread , once down reading it, re-read it , I would try using that method first ,it helps you learn , but if you want to go to this thread and it will be a whole lot easier :http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1675939

I would advise making sure you have at least Version 3 or higher of the unlocked bootloader. Version 4 is better as you can change the boot image. Also, with version 4 (and higher) you can flash any future bootloaders through CWM.
Also, make a system (nand) recovery backup before you go flashing roms. This way you have something to go back to if the flash doesn't go right.
part of the original problem you had was the recovery you tried to flash was an earlier version which doesnt match ICS , You can get the beta copy of Acer Recovery ,but you'll have to search for it , it also has updated ICS recovery listed

THIS IS FROM EAZYTERRYS
The real answer is if you have ICS, to install a custom recover or custom kernel you must have an unlocked bootloader.
The following resources are related to the new bootloader, a quick read of the OPs of the first two are highly recommended, even if you install with the third link. (This is to have a highlevel idea of what you are changing on your device, as it will help you find what you need to look closer at in future if something goes wrong, or possibly prevent a problem in the first case) bootloader thread civato's guide Afterota tool (windows users bootloader install tool)
If you already have the unlocked bootloader installed, but can't boot into recovery:
This is likely because you have a stock ICS rom overwritting recovery with the stock recovery in every boot; either use fastboot or (if you have root) a program such as acer recovery installer to force the install of a recovery and immediately reboot into it. (Most bootloader installers will also install a recovery that you can immediately boot into)
Once in recovery you can backup/restore/or install a rom modified to prevent the overwrite of recovery. (More advanced users can stop this from adb by removing some files)
Personally I use a lightly modified version of the stock rom you are using now: http://forum.xda-developers.com/show....php?t=1661492
it ought to be safe to do a no wipe update to that and receive a more expected environment with a custom recovery, optional custom OC kernel, and busybox support.
However if you explore the dev section, many other (both more and less modified) versions of ICS roms exist. Themed and otherwise. So feel free to explore.

It's serious: I need help... flashing stock A501 rom

Hi,
atm, I have an A501 with CWM-based Recovery v5.5.0.x(thor2002ro rev1.7) and Android 3.2 (EMEA CUS7 - Germany).
My Tab tells me that there is an update, which I downloaded and tried to install. However, after a few seconds an Android with a red exclamation mark appears and the installation of the updates aborts.
So, I want to remove CWM Recovery and root and return to a stock rom. However, that seems impossible. I downloaded the Acer Recovery Installer App but this one offers me a USA A500 stock rom - but I need an A501 rom because of 3g.
When I try to install this one (http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1234039) I decrypted before, CWM tells me
"Installating update...
Installation aborted"
So, this does not work either.
I am really desperate because I have to revert to a stock rom...
Can someone please, please, please help me out?

The update has overwritten yr custom recovery with the Acer stock recovery. It also checks yr system files if it ain't completely stock it will abort. being rooted can also affect the update.

Yes, I did install cwm again from acer recovery installer, but that did not change anything.
Unfortunately none of the roms offered on xda work, they all abort in cwm and I don't know why.

Yeah, you may have difficulties flashing full packages via CWM. Especially if you didn't decrypt the rom first.
I've got a few 501 roms you can try. All HC 3.2.
One of them, is an ATT full package update which will probably work for you. Just pull the update.zip out of it. Put it on your Ext SD card, and boot holding PWR and Vol+. This will force it to install update.zip from the SD card.
Any rom you use, you have to decrypt it first. Some try renaming the rom to update.zip, and some have success using this method.
Like I say, it's an AT&T rom, but is probably really a ComGen 1. So it should have decent language support.
If you're interested, I can throw them up on a server tomorrow.
But I tell you this first, before you go messing around with these things. GET YOUR UID Number first, and write it down. You can get instructions on UID in the Development Forum, 1st page usually. It's easy.

No probs!!
U must use a "update.zip" , decrypted first as Moscow said, and booting into recovery via button combo may help too,
also remember to remove the zip file off the ext. sdcard when you are done!!
....good luck
