cant update - Acer Iconia A500

Hi guys i know this question has been asked several times before but i didnt find that tread but im running stock 3.2 rooted right.
Is there any update of 3.2 fahable with recovery i know there is one way to do it but you have to follow a lot of steps and it seems very risky to me.
Thanks for your help in advance

When Acer pushed the 3.2 update, they pushed a new bootloader along with it. Caused some issues. Mainly, either loss of a previous root, or no root with 3.2
Fortunately, the following thread tells you how to revert it to a previous version. I would advise step 2.
Also, I would download the files you need. 1. Iconia root, 2. Acer Recovery, 3. Download a rom you would like to install. Like Honeylicious (500)
After you follow step 2 on
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1276227
Install your Iconia root.apk
Then Install acer recovery.apk
Then, boot to recovery (vol- and Pwr button till you see the text in the upper lt corner) then release.
Follow the instructions that the Rom gave you;
1. Wipe User Data
2. Wipe cach partition
3. Go to Advanced, wipe Delvik
then go back a screen, and "install zip from sd"
Happy motoring
Then, from the acer recovery app, install the "recovery"

[ROM][A501][HC 3.2] Rooted Stock HC 3.2 for CWM only

hi guys,
i'm usually into stock ROMs and since i got my Iconia A501 i tried to find a 3.2 Stock ROM but rooted.
since i didn't find any i did one myself with the help of kekinash's thread.
[ROM] Rooted Stock HC 3.2 US Rom for CWM only (5-oct-11)
it's based on Acer_A501_1.309.02_4.031.24_COM_GEN1 and all i did was to add su and superuser.
Here's the link:
took it down to retest it myself from scratch
i'm not a very "linuxy" person and i'm not sure if i can help with any kind of problems.
Steps to install:
Update from 3.0.1
1. Root using Initial Root for A500
2. Install Acer Recovery Install from market
3. (optional) update recovery to 1.5 from Here which i got from thor2002ro thread Here.
4. Flash the ROM
5. Clear cache and davlik-cache
6. reboot and enjoy
if you're on Custom 3.2 go from step 3.
Thanks to:
- kekinash for your thread.
- thor2002ro for CWM recovery
I tried it but unfortunatly it doesn't work for me...
During the initial setup, the com.google.android.gsf.login process FC. It impossible to connect to the market for the same reason.
Superuser also FC... and many other apps!
I'll have to revert to stock rom.
do not work built-in 3g modem
3G was working on mine... but nearly nothing else. And as I did not have market access, it was difficult to even get a logcat.
i went from scratch to flash this.
reverted to 3.0.1, wipe, rooted, CWM, flashed the ROM and i got some FC in browser and clear.fi. not sure why. i wiped again and it was the same. i replaced the update script with the one i got in the superuser.zip and everything works now.
i really have no idea what happened but i'm sorry guys.
No problem!
Thank you for your work. Your next release will be easier to install anyway as CWM is installed on my a501 now.
I will give you some feedback when I have installed it. Not before tomorrow however...
you can try also this and see if it works.
after flashing the ROM
flash the superuser zip from CWM
I can flash this on my non-rooted stock ROM isn't it?
yeap. as long as you flash it from CWM.
Still does not work. Same problem!
I downgraded again, rooted, flashed, updates with superuser and still no luck.
I tried to make my own rooted rom but it doesn't flash. I don't know why...
this sucks then.
at least i tried. sorry man.
I finally managed to get the latest A501 rom with root. For this:
- I took the latest A501 ROM (Acer_A501_0.000.00_4.037.01_EMEA)
- I applied the steps to insert su into the update.zip (copy su, remove bootloader, edit update-script) directly in the zip using 7zip
- I downgraded, rooted, installes CWM, flashed my zip, wiped caches etc.
- I installed SuperUser from the market
That's it!
Now i reinstalled acer recovery to reinstall CWM (which was overwritten) and everything seems to be ok.
YES!
glad it worked for you.

Can you post your rom vax?
I'll try to do it this evening... But I'm not used to this kind of post!
Can I upload it to megaupload and post the link or is there an "official" way of doing it?
i did the same thing for a different version.
the one i posted in the first post.
it's the official Acer_A501_1.309.02_4.031.24_COM_GEN1
and i added the update script from the superuser zip.

My ROM is here : http://www.megaupload.com/?d=ZNZ1L5WB
Working for me... But don't forget to install SuperUser from the market!

The difference with my rom are:
- the version of su - I used 3.0.3 because there seemed to be a problem with 3.0.7
- the updater-script - I started with the script from the ROM and added/deleted the relevant lines.
The updater script for A501 is more complex than the one for the A500 : there's a whole section about flashing the 3G firmware and the required libs.
The best would be to modify the script a little further to remove the flashing of the bootloader. It should not be very complicated but my first try did not work : CWM did not want to flaseh the resulting zip.
Any suggestion is welcome.

Would you consider doing it for a GEN1 ROM? I tried another "stock" ROM on the forums and it isn't actually stock at all.
Why not... but it is quite simple. Did you try it yourself?

[Q] Need help with unroot and return to stock

I need some help unrooting and returning to stock. I rooted the device using the method of returning back to 3.1 and flashing the unstable rom then installing iconia root then acer recovery to install CWM. After rooting I did not make a backup of my device so I have lost the original rom. This is an Acer Iconia A500 with 8gb internal storage bought from Best Buy on black friday. I've read through many forums in the development area but since I have not posted enough times I can not ask a question there. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Basically, when you run a full package stock rom, it should put your tablet back into stock condition. This will remove the custom recovery, just like it did when you downgraded.
You can find a list of the stock roms based on region at this link.
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1113878
Vache put some instructions there, and it's pretty simple.
Sorry, I'm new, and have the same question.
I am confused, for clarification ....
If you are unrooting and have Clock Work Mod Recovery what do you have to do?
I used Acer Recovery Installer from the market to install clock work mod. If I am unrooting and returning to sock, should I use the option to install "Stock USA 1.41.07_COM_GEN1 recovery" before flashing and then use the power/up button combination? Is it Ok to use Clock Work Mod to install one of the stock roms from the SD card or will Clock Work Mod cause a mess?

Vache has simple instructions on that page. As you read, it says to extract the update.zip file, put it to sd, then hold vol- and pwr. It should flash the rom, That's for the update zip..
However, I would use one of the full set roms.
When the stock rom runs, it should overwrite the CWM recovery, and re-instate the factory bootloader.
Here are the instructions direct from Vache's page for full rom.
"Here are some full packages, updates and EUU firmware from Acer OTA server and from some magical sources.
Full package and updates should be flash via the recovery.
EUU version are working in APX mode with nvflash. (you can enter in APX mode by booting the tablet with Reset / Power pressed)"
Now, what other recovery do you have to flash a full rom?
NOTE: I have not and have no plans to revert to stock. So I've never done this. You may want to post a question also in that thread to see if you can get any extra info.

You could also use the Downgrade tool with the original downgrade images. The original downgrade tool will put back factory recovery and factory stock. This would be everything you need to be totally stock. Once you get to stock, then you can just apply the OTA's if that's what you want. Or are you trying to get to stock and then root?

Yeah, I keep forgetting about your tool.
I think they just want to get back to a stock condition without cwm and root.
You may want to post a link to the tool.
Finally got it. Used the Acer recovery tool to flash Acer stock recovery image and then extracted the update zip from the full package and put it on my SD card (made sure it was the only zip on the card) then redooted into recovery by holding down the volume up key and the power button. Update flashed and all is back to stock. Reasons for doing this were that I could not find a ROM that seemed like it was a real improvement over stock. My favorite would have been Thor's ROM mostly due to the ice cream sandwich tweaks and the ability to clear the recent apps drawer. May go back to root but wanted to know how to get back if necessary. Thanks for all the help.

Glad it worked for you!
Vache should be a touch more clear on "which" recovery to use for the full package
Although it seems people used both CWM and Acer Recovery. (he just states "recovery")
Glad you cleared that up

@sydeu, you probably want to run Acer_A501_4.037.01_EMEA_TMPL. Note this is for the 501 so not sure if you are looking for a 501 or 500 stock rom.
I run it on my 501, and it has svetski lauguage support.
I think you can use any of the EMEA roms. You can unpack or decrypt the roms before flashing, and check the ldb files (system\usr\xt9\databases\ldb\) You should see an ldb that usually starts or contains "Sv". I think these are related to the keyboard, but it will have system support for the language.
Not all roms and updates are listed there, those are just the ones people were able to find. So get the one that's closest to your needs.

Help returning my A500 to stock

I downgraded my unrooted A500 on 3.2 to the "unstable" 3.0.1
I then rooted it and installed CWM.
Then I made a back up on CWM before flashing another rom.
It worked really well except a couple of bugs (No audio on HDMI and reduced battery life)
I know beggars can't be choosers but I would prefer if EVERYTHING worked.
So....I restored my A500 from the backup of 3.0.1 via CWM with a hope to just returning it back to factory settings and returning to an unrooted 3.2
However, when it tries to do the system update it fails.
I have tried the factory reset and then tried again to update via system update but still fails (I get the blue honeycomb bee with exclamation mark)
Can anyone point me in the direction of a stock 3.2 rom that I can flash via CWM?
or even better, one that means I wont lose root???

Thank you but that was the original method I used to downgrade and is the rom that CWm restores to from my back up.
The problem I have is upgrading via the system update.
I am currently trying to do it via a different SD card.....
there are some roms around, but you'll need a good knowledge of search button
Here's one, there are more but keep in mind they are near stock rooted roms: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1313757&highlight=stock+rom+rooted&page=1
cheers
This happened to me.
You need to install Acer Recovery from Market and flash the Stock recovery before it will let you update with system updates.
Here is a link to stock rom using cwm but it says its not rooted:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1429199
Since this looks like it keeps cwm in place you should be able to download the flashable version of super user and root your device through recovery.
Just do this http://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=20680452&postcount=137
It will fix your issues, guarantee it. Just read the instructions in the readme.

It's serious: I need help... flashing stock A501 rom

Hi,
atm, I have an A501 with CWM-based Recovery v5.5.0.x(thor2002ro rev1.7) and Android 3.2 (EMEA CUS7 - Germany).
My Tab tells me that there is an update, which I downloaded and tried to install. However, after a few seconds an Android with a red exclamation mark appears and the installation of the updates aborts.
So, I want to remove CWM Recovery and root and return to a stock rom. However, that seems impossible. I downloaded the Acer Recovery Installer App but this one offers me a USA A500 stock rom - but I need an A501 rom because of 3g.
When I try to install this one (http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1234039) I decrypted before, CWM tells me
"Installating update...
Installation aborted"
So, this does not work either.
I am really desperate because I have to revert to a stock rom...
Can someone please, please, please help me out?

Yes, I did install cwm again from acer recovery installer, but that did not change anything.
Unfortunately none of the roms offered on xda work, they all abort in cwm and I don't know why.

Yeah, you may have difficulties flashing full packages via CWM. Especially if you didn't decrypt the rom first.
I've got a few 501 roms you can try. All HC 3.2.
One of them, is an ATT full package update which will probably work for you. Just pull the update.zip out of it. Put it on your Ext SD card, and boot holding PWR and Vol+. This will force it to install update.zip from the SD card.
Any rom you use, you have to decrypt it first. Some try renaming the rom to update.zip, and some have success using this method.
Like I say, it's an AT&T rom, but is probably really a ComGen 1. So it should have decent language support.
If you're interested, I can throw them up on a server tomorrow.
But I tell you this first, before you go messing around with these things. GET YOUR UID Number first, and write it down. You can get instructions on UID in the Development Forum, 1st page usually. It's easy.

U must use a "update.zip" , decrypted first as Moscow said, and booting into recovery via button combo may help too,
also remember to remove the zip file off the ext. sdcard when you are done!!

[Q] Can't Enter Recovery Mode to do anything

Hi,
I need a little help as I am a complete noob and have just crash landed into the world of Rooted Roms.
I recently rooted my stock 4.0.3 ICS rom for my Iconia tab A500, using blackthund3r_ICS_Root_6.0. It worked brilliantly as far as I can tell. The Superuser function is there and I even deleted some of the annoying stock games that are on the stock ROM.
As the next step, I installed the Acer Recovery
However, I am interested in trying a leaner custom ROM in order to improve the performance of my tab, so I downloaded the Acer Recovery Installer from the Play store. I chose the Recovery version CWM rev1.7 by thor2002ro (for ICS Bootloader) and clicked on the install Recovery Image.
When I clicked on the Reboot into recovery mode because I wanted to back up my ROM and eventually install a leaner faster ROM, I got the following error message:
Booting recovery kernel image
Recovery verified failed ...
Anyone have any suggestions to help me out?
Thanks in advance for your help and putting up with my Noobish ways!!!!

sounds like your rooted correctly if u cud install the recovery file, but u should use thors cwm 1.7.3 to flash roms because it supports aroma installer which the newer roms use. did u get message from acer RI saying recovery installed?
u can find cwm 1.7.3 by thor here .
just put the zip from that link on ur sd card
if u can get into the recovery you installed.
choose install zip from sd in your cwm menus and select the zip.
let it finish then reboot.
viola! you have updated your recovery and shud be able to make the backup u need.
it is what i used.
if u cant get into recovery yet try turning off your tab
power it on and hold the volume down button.( the volume rocker side closest to the power button)
hold them to u see the white righting in the upper right corner of your acer screen
if u get in, update.
if u still cant get into recovery. try one of those other recoveries
try to install thors cwm 1.7.3 zip from there.
if u like i cud point u to some roms ive tried, since we have the same tab. happy to help.
Hi shadowmikeshadow;41918411
I will give it a go and tell you if it worked. Thanks for your advice. After all I could use all the help I can get. I am totally new and clueless to this whole rooting thing. I've only had my tablet for about 9 months and I got tired of all the lags and thought it was time to root and get rid of all the bloatware.
I really appreciate all the support you profis out there are offering. In general this whole site is GREAT!!!!!
np man im happy to help. well get u goin for sure
also couldnt hurt to double check your root with root checker(free app) could be making ur AcerRI not work correctly
and if u still cant get it to work and u are rooted correct theres still more we can do. its just more complex so try those first..
Do I have to do anything with this Recovery zip file that you suggested. I put it on my SD card and rebooted in Recovery mode and I still get the same error.
Please keep in mind I am complete Noob at this.
Thanks.
So if u can't get any recovery working install that zip via adb.
u can download this so u won't need android sdk.
follow all the instructions on the platformer page.
If everything went OK and adb sees your device
Follow this guide for adb here
but use the recovery from the zip in earlier reply.
Still desperate

Hi Everyone,
As of posting this original thread above I am still stuck in limbo. I have read, read, and read and am more confused then ever.
There are so many suggestions out there and I dont know what to do.
My problem is this: I have no way to enter the recovery mode to do anything (flash a new ROM or Stock)
If someone out there has the time and patience to help me and can talk me through step by step how to fix this problem, it would be highly appreciated.
Thanks for your understanding and support.
