I saw a youtube-clip where a guy demonstrated that u could use a pen (or other objects) to control the screen. Was going to try this in a meeting today, but the function seems to be deactivated. I have browsed through the settings and can't find the option to active this.
I have tried the setting enabling the use of phone with a glow, but it wont recognize any of my pens.
Anyone know?

Any chance of a link of the YouTube clip to see? I'm pretty sure those pens would've been a capacitive type for it to work on the screen. There are even some that look like a ball point pen, but is actually capacitive.

Under display settings all the way dow youll see a box for high touch sensitivity. Maybe that one will make it work
I have tested some more now and it seems to be able to recognize objects of metal. Dont understand how the guy could control it with a bottle then

Wow! I stand corrected and humbled! He definitely mentioned "conductive", but all the objects he used were everyday objects! I even tried with a pen and it worked! Didn't even have to enable the extra sensitive function. Gonna get a milk bottle next to try, haha!
Are you using any screen protectors (film or glass)?
I know on mine, it's a matte finish, but they say that gloves and capacitive pens would still work.

So I bought one of the cases recommended over in the accessories forum, which holds the tab propped up at an angle. It really helps with typing and all around use when you set the Tab on a desk or table. The way the case works, the camera is on the side closest to the user. Whenever I open any game (Angry Birds, Vendetta Online, etc) it flips the orientation so that the camera side is on top, instead of on the bottom. This has made it unusable! The case designer had the right idea, since putting the tab in the other way would expose the charging port (It's a folio style case). I've tried turning off the automatic screen orientation setting, but it didn't help. Any ideas?

Here is a link to the case I bought.
Pics here & here of how the case folds.
Regardless of all that, the real question is... How do I run games and such with the bottom of the screen being the camera side? I thought the whole point of doing away with all the physical buttons was so that it could be rotated any which way?!?

Total guess here, but maybe it has something to do with applications that need to track orientation (like Vendetta) and/or programming decisions by the developers (Angry Birds?).
If its a programming thing, maybe theres a way to send a bug report to the developers about the orientation issue and they could roll it into a future update.
Or ... just learn to play Vendetta with the thumb controls and Angry Birds must be a whole new experience upside down ;-)
Thought it would be interesting to make a thread on how people are using the S-pen. Give people some new ideas or whatever.
I rarely use it. My handwriting sucks so the Note has no idea what I'm writing. Although normal people can't read my writing when I write with pen/paper anyway, so no surprise there.
I mostly use the S-pen to play Nemo picross actually, ha ha ha! It sure is nice to shrink the grid to a tiny size (20x20 visible) and use the pen to play. When I used my fingers on my mytouch 4g, I'd have to use a 9x9 visible grid, and I'd have to scroll all over the place.

Japanese handwriting recognition.
Faster typing with Swype.
Handwritting with Graffiti Pro recognition method. Works way better than inbuilt one as you use simplified characters.
Also drawing and photo masking/editing.
i use it for swypeing - i rly like it.
GTD. Any time something comes up that I have to do, I do a quick memo and send to evernote inbox. each day I open evernote inbox and process all items. I make a handwritten lists of the task for that day and save the other ones to a next actions folder in evernote.
I use the stylus for Swyping and everything else, any time my fingers are a little damp and not sliding smoothly over the screen.

I use the pen for selecting small items on web pages where zooming is not allowed and where a laptop and mouse would be needed e.g. in charting packages. I also find it useful for selecting text during editing where you need to be precise.
removing earwax, my finger is much more accurate than the s-pen to draw with
I figure it's a tool that needs to be learned like a musical instrument.
A little bit every day, until you get to the point where you're fluid, expressive, and extremely efficient.
Right now, I'm practicing here and there. Here's what I hope to be able to do very quickly with the S-pen in a couple months:
-- pull up S memo, jot down a quick note or 5, save in a "pile"; convert to text to be scheduled/organized later; shared to Evernote/Skitch/class notebook
-- screen capture pages and images, then edit/crop them to share later (like in the fancy demos)
-- sketch quick ideas, like charts and graphs, to import into a presentation form (ppt, email to group, into a video tutorial)
-- learn to draw (How to Draw app), to make quick flyers, invites, and ads
-- be very familiar with photo editing, exporting
-- be very familiar with video editing, exporting
-- annotate PDFs, whiteboards
-- be fluent enough to demonstrate all this to gawkers
As of now, I'm just dipping my toes in the all these pools. So much to learn, so little time...
I will say that I'm finding the tiny stylus and the inconveniently placed button difficult. I think the larger Samsung pen accessory into which the stylus can be inserted is somewhere in my future...
-
I use it to use the note when the temperatures are very low and I have my gloves on.
I love drawing and sketching with the s pen...
I also use it to write out messages quickly. Once you get used to using the s pen, handwriting input can be pretty fast - I manage to fit 4-6 words even on the portrait version of handwriting input for msgs and that works out pretty well; it's even better in landscape..
I use the pen for selecting small items on web pages too and also some games are much easier to play using the pen.
In the winter I imagine not having to take gloves off to use my phone (except to get the pen out of the slot of course!)
If you're asking though "Is it a gimmick?" then I will say NO. It is genuinely useful.
Nothing
My 9 year old daughter used it once to draw and keep herself busy whilst waiting for the main course to arrive
show off in front of my freinds it serves no other purpose.
I was so impressed by this I'm pseudo bumping it:

Hi,
Is there a way to have the screen off while playing back through hdmi to TV?
Cheers
MJ-12
There isn't (at least not on android). The HDMI output is an exact mirror of your tab's screen (though it's clipped by about 15px on the top and bottom, not counting the button bar). What you can do is set up a VNC server on your tab, then use that for output to your display (via a laptop or something like that)... though I guess that kind of defeats the purpose of using your tab.

I do not know if it's what you need, but maybe can help you the app "RootDim", with that you can lower the bright of the screen to zero, is not off, the touch panel still works, help to save some battery, also you can use a mouse with the TV screen to use the tablet.

Thanks for this man!
If you mean while playing a video, you can accomplish kind of the same thing if the brightness on your player can be turned all the way down.
The two video players I use the most are MXPlayer and VPlayer.
MXPlayer can dim the screen, but not all the way to black. VPlayer on the other hand will dim all the way down so that the screen looks like it's off. Changing the screen brightness in this way does not seem to affect output to the TV.
So you can try VPlayer. Likely others as well may do the same thing.
Good luck to you...

BS Player will let you dim the screen completely, and it also has the best playback of any free video player for Tegra 2.
Mobo also lets you dim the screen completely, but it can not smoothly playback many videos for me.

I have persistent issues with the touch screen.. it is unresponsive and inaccurate (I touch one part on the screen.. it "ghost" touch another region instead)... I am getting really annoyed by that... It's due to dirt around the sensors I think (cuz when i clean it, it's better) but I can't prevent dirt from getting on the sensors! Are all ebook touch screens like that?

You are correct, this problem is happening due to buildup of substances (dirt, sand, dust, etc.) around your Nook's screen sensors. If you cannot prevent these substances from getting on your screen, try putting your Nook in a case with a pocket cover. You can carry a microfiber cloth in the pocket to clean the screen when needed.

Actually most newer e-readers have a capacitive layer for the touch screen instead of the infrared sensors along the edge. I would recommend that anyone experiencing these issues search for and download Renate's app for testing your NST screen, It'll show you exactly what sensor is having problems and allow you to try and correct them.

EDIT - Nevermind, after a fair bit of searching I found it. Here's the post with the latest .apk, and here's the post with instructions.
Download Touch.apk in the signature.
Also UsbMode.apk now shows touch coordinates too for a quick check.
It will also work with non-Nook-specific stuff on any Android devices (up to Lollipop).
The screenshot below was with a Nexus 9 using 10 fingers.
The number of points your device can follow may be anywhere from 1 to 10.

Here's a screenshot of what my NTG displays when using 2 fingers - strange that it still displays coord's instead of "2 points" like the Nexus 9 shot you attached does (except with 10, of course).
EDIT - By the way, @Renate NST, don't you think it's probably time to put com.temblast.reader.apk into your signature?
I didn't think there was enough room to show 10 sets of coordinates.
That's why you only see the first two sets.
After that, it only shows the number of touches.
Um, about the Reader, I have to see what the latest version is.
The development has gone off in a direction that probably is not useful for most users.

Is there any way to increase the screen sensitivity on the T280? I've only found one mention of the issue after thoroughly searching Google, with no suggested fix.
I'm comfortable with modifying system files such as build.prop and such, I just have no idea where to start!
The issue:
This screen is really slow to pick up touches, especially from a stylus.
When swiping (eg for pattern unlock) contact is often broken.
Even using my finger, when selecting text it's difficult to move just one letter at a time.
In handwriting/drawing apps, resulting text is extremely angular and jagged.
Here's what I've tried:
Changed "mouse sensitivity" in the settings (minor improvement)
Used 2 different screen calibration apps (minor improvement)
Installed debloated ROM (only one available; no improvement)
Removed some unnecessary system apps (will be removing more to free up space....)
Disabled settings that affect device speed such as animations
Several different stylus types (the most expensive work worst )
So, is anyone else finding this an issue? Is there a fix I don't know about? Is/are there a kernel tweak or something that will speed up screen response time?
I bought this tablet in part so I could use it for handwriting input using a stylus on a larger screen than my teeny S5. Unfortunately, the screen response is far too inconsistent and ...well, slow than I'd expected.

Unfortunately the drivers or the touchscreen hardware itself for the T280/T285 is not that good. I have a drawing app that I created myself and the touch event update rate is so slow it creates jagged lines. Best case is that it is a driver issue and we can fix it in the kernel, worst case the hardware just sucks and it is what it is. On my OMNIRom 6.0.1 SM-T285 device touch response is actually ok, it is the update rate and precision of the touch which is a problem.
Thank you so much for the quick reply, and for understanding what I mean.

Hooray for drivers being a possibility! There's something can be done about that!!
Do you find that the lines aren't quite as jagged running OMNIRom as with stock?
How would someone find out whether it's the hardware or the drivers?
Are the differences between 280/85 so extreme that I can't try anything on my own?
Is there anywhere I can "sign up" for testing any new tweaks or ROMs or kernels?
(Update on the issue: I ran the "screen calibration" test again and it says it's taken another 10ms off the response time. Not sure if I'm imagining it but it feels as if it's actually faster...)
I was also thinking, would the DPI have anything to do with the jagged appearance? Between this tablet and the 2 others I was looking at (both Galaxy - previous 7-inch and 9-inch) those had much better DPI ...or am I thinking of resolution? Those aren't the same thing, are they? In any case, it's worth checking into whether fiddling with the DPI might do any damage.

Based on the software codepath, DPI shouldn't really affect touch performance.
I wound up returning it and picking up the 7" Galaxy Tab E Lite (SM-113), which seems to suit my needs much better. While it's much more limited in some ways - no custom ROMs, limited to KK4.4.4, same small internal storage issue - the screen response is WAY better and I can get around the annoyances (largely - no, SOLELY - due to all the things this forum has taught me over the years. :highfive:

Similar issue
Hi,
Was wondering if anyone with these issues also experienced this: While the tablet is on, when watching something for instance, if the touch screen isn't used for a bit (say over 30 seconds) when I first press it it doesn't respond at all, to get it to wake up I have to press quite firmly, usually several times, before it starts working. Once it does respond I can use a much lighter touch so it doesn't seem like a screen protector or overall sensitivity problem, it's as if the screen goes into some kind of sleep mode becoming much less sensitive.
Anyone know about this/how to fix it?
Much love,
Tom
