unlock symbol means, your bootloader is not sbk locked. you dont have fastboot capability on the retail. you get nvflash.
power + vol up , hold till you get past the battery icon, when it turns black, you are in APX mode.
thanks pershoot

Wait, I am confused because I saw this posted in the root thread:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=14917274&postcount=144
I have a 10.1 Retail 32 GB and I see the unlock symbol when it boots. However, after reading the post I linked to above, I checked mine and I see the Android jumping out of a box on the left and the Android downloading on the right. I am assuming these correlate to Recovery and Update which would mean I'm locked.
So which is it? I just wanted to know since I am contemplating rooting this thing.
means your unlocked... mine is locked and i dono if i should try and return it to get an unlocked one or if i should hold out and hope the devs find a way to unlock it. i am rooted right now but i would like to be able to flash a kernel
I have a Google nexus 7 and i wanna root this. I use fedora 18 and universal nexus Linux toolkit V2.1.2 to do this. when nexus go to recovery mode, show and sleep android logo and a danger sign on his stomach and said, "no command" what can I do? please help

I guess you don't need to boot into recovery to root, you simply need to boot into bootloader
If there's the "no command" message, press power and volume up (or down?) to bypass that

I can`t bypass that. I don`t know why but when I press power and volume up, technically I reboot device. which part I do wrong?
I wanna root my nexus with Universal Nexus Linux Toolkit and it says I can root my nexus without unlock bootloader. so I can use warranty.

I guess it's impossible to root without unlocking bootloader... But it could be I'm wrong

I have same problem with myt Nexus 7 except that mine is rooted (with Nexus 7 Toolkit v1.5). Recovery mode has the dreaded "No Command" message and no combination of button presses will take it past that screen - except into normal reboot.
I've got the same no command message and no combination of buttons with the power & volume rocker will get me out of it. looking for suggestions.

Motochopper exploit has been out and about for a while, although your mileage may vary. KhoC, it's generally better practice to go through fastboot first. Reboot by holding power and both volume buttons (up and down). You should get to a black screen with an android in the center, and a tab at the top that will say things like Reboot bootloader, Recovery, Power Off, and other such things. Scroll with the volume buttons, select with power.

Care to tell us what combinations you've tried? Saying that none of them work is generally unhelpful, since it's possible you're just forgetting one/slightly malforming the correct sequence.

Yea sorry. I've tried power + volume up, power + volume down & power + both volume up/down at both powering it it on and while the device is actually on. while the device is on, if I press power + volume up, all it does is dim/brighten the screen. power + volume down does nothing. When I'm pressing the buttons, I'm holding them down, which will eventually reboot the device. I get the Google logo and the unlocked padlock, then the android laying down with no command below it.
Edit: I started my own thread this morning about it titled "Need help recovering my Nexus 7" a few posts down so not to hijack this one that has a little more info as well.

It was rooted, and the tech never asked. To be honest, I'm not sure how one would tell if it won't even boot. I'll find out I guess.

xt907 ships with a locked bootloader.
if it was unlock, you should see a
warning bootloader is unlocked
screen, every time its rebooted.
if you power off
hold volume button down, and power on.
it should boot in to AP Fastboot mode
it will either say locked or unlocked along with other bootloader info
to exit AP Fastboot, press power button.
it will power off, then you can power on normally.

Theres no toggle when I get to the AP fastboot flash mode screen and the status code is a zero. The boot loader had to be available at some point before or it wouldn't have been able to be rooted and have 4.1.2 installed. How can I access the boo loader ?

If bootloader is unlocked, you see a unlocked bootloader warning every time the device is booted up.
It is possible that spash screen could have been replaced though.
The bootloader screen does say Locked or Unlocked
From powered off,
hold the volume down button,
press and release the power button,
release the volume button when you see the bootloader info.
see attached screenshots

also rooting does not require an Unlocked bootloader.
The fastboot screen says LOCKED with a status of "0"
I def don't have that boot loader screen you posted there. Am I dealing with an impossible to unlock boot loader syndrome?

I would like to know how to do this as well after flashing stock firmware in Odin, the option to toggle off OEM unlocking is grayed out. Any help would be awesome!

You can't choose the OEM lock until you re-lock the bootloader. You do that the same way you unlocked it. But be warned, it does a factory reset also, which means you have to go through the whole setup proceedure again. BTW, it is unlocking the bootloader that causes the message, not the OEM lock. Also, do you know that you don't have to wait for that message to disappear on it own. If you tap the power button when it appears, it goes away without the delay.

The OEM lock is grayed out. I have factory reset everything. Through Odin and device. I just want the bootloader locked again and reversing this procedure does not work. Not worried about erasing the device I've already downloaded the 2 to 3 hour 2.3GB file I pushed through Odin

Did you actually read my post. OEM and bootloader locks are two entirely different things. When you first unlocked your tablet, there were two steps involved. FIRST, you had to enable developer mode and turn on OEM enable. THEN, you had to unlock the bootloader by holding the proper buttons when powering up. To relock, you have to do that in reverse. First relock the bootloader, using the same buttons you did to unlock, and then, and only then, you can disable OEM. And the second step is optional. You don't have to disable OEM to get rid of the message.
Edit: And "reversing the procedure" does work if you do it right. It is the ONLY way to relock the bootloader and I have done it. So I know it works.
reedit: OK, I just did it again on my T510. Turn the tablet off. Plug the cable into the PC but NOT the tablet. Hold both the vol up and down buttons and then plugin the cable from the PC. When the green screen appears, release the buttons and then press and hold the vol up till the next screen appears. IT WORKS!

No I do NOT mean download/fastboot mode. Go back and research how to UNLOCK the bootloader. IT DOES NOT USE FASTBOOT. You DO NOT use fastboot to unlock Samsung devices. And "factory reset" via Odin is meaningless. You don't use Odin to unlock the bootloader either. BTW, Samsung and most other reputable tablet makers, intentionally make it hard to unlock their devices because it is a serious security risk if you don't know what you are doing. Do you know what you are doing?

I actually do know what I am doing as a matter of fact. I rooted all of our devices in this household including friends and family. Some of them are in my signature. I got it finally so I guess thanks for all of your generous replies to point me in the right direction. Have a nice day!

I apologise for getting snappy but I was starting to get frustrated trying to point out that the OEM lock wasn't the problem and that the "buttons" did work.
Thanks Lewmur
Just wanted to pop on and say thanks lewmur, I was getting sick of not being able to update and singe I bought a Galaxy S9+ I cant root that, might as well keep them both stock and use "altered" apk install files. I was not sure if it was possible to relock the bootloader, now I know lol, so thanks.
I have a TAB S6 running Android 10. Bootloader is unlocked and OEM switch IS NOT grayed out. I went into DL mode and all I saw was the same thing as when I unlocked the TAB in the first place. Anything special I need to do to re-lock this baby.

..."When the green screen appears, release the buttons and then press and hold the vol up till the next screen appears. IT WORKS!"
with the term " 'hold' the vol up" you use - instead of 'Long Press' the middle Volume button option on the screen!
This method by Long Pressing Volume Up button will get you to the three options screen which asks if you want to lock your Tab...
