unlock symbol means, your bootloader is not sbk locked. you dont have fastboot capability on the retail. you get nvflash.
power + vol up , hold till you get past the battery icon, when it turns black, you are in APX mode.

thanks pershoot

Wait, I am confused because I saw this posted in the root thread:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=14917274&postcount=144
I have a 10.1 Retail 32 GB and I see the unlock symbol when it boots. However, after reading the post I linked to above, I checked mine and I see the Android jumping out of a box on the left and the Android downloading on the right. I am assuming these correlate to Recovery and Update which would mean I'm locked.
So which is it? I just wanted to know since I am contemplating rooting this thing.

means your unlocked... mine is locked and i dono if i should try and return it to get an unlocked one or if i should hold out and hope the devs find a way to unlock it. i am rooted right now but i would like to be able to flash a kernel

Can a mod lock/close this thread?
I don't see a point in this thread as it have been know for a long time how to get in to download mode.

I guess the 5 Galaxy S that you tested do have a proper bootloader.
Your steps of 3 button are exactly what everyone uses to access download mode.
For those without 3 button recovery, you can press all day long and nothing happens.

access download mode in without 3br fix
I mean if you have galaxy s i9000 without 3br.
Is what you can still have access to download mode without flashing a new bootloader.
You didn't get it. Not all device have broken 3br feature.
I think that he want to tell us, that you need to pressing those buttons and not just hold them. Pressing 3 buttons at once repeatedly for some time. I can't test that, i flashed fix for 3br.
Or i'm totally wrong and he is too..

My friend, my SGS was bootloader locked. I pressed the sh*t out of the three buttons in all conceivable ways, and no Download mode. Nothing. Nil. Zero.
All your 5 phones were bootloader unlocked, if 3BR is not working the only solution is flashing a new bootloader.

No, he is Samsung's owner.
Some "newer" Indian Samsung Galaxy S devices don't have the three button recovery. That's what I think he's trying to refer to.

OKay
Here a Breaf
i have Two Galaxy S.
One is 8Gb GT-i9000 purchased from O2 UK. This model has correct boot loader with no 3 Button combo Issue.
Then i purchased a another galaxy S i9000 16GB from India it's Running DDJG4 MODEM, PDA, AND csc. In this model i tried running 3 button combo but nothing happes as it's turns on and showing Galaxy Boot Screen. Insted of Download mode. Same appiled for recover.
So Today i take a risk and applied a update with Odin 1.3.
XXJPM. It got stucked on Sutep connection. And last option i have to disconnect. I decided not to flast boot loader. So means there's no 3 button combo Fix.
After reset removing battery. i turend it on and it showed MOBILE then computer (SCREEN OF DEATH) Then i keep pressing VOL DOWN + HOME + POWER and then mobile went off then Again on showed the logo. and again restart and come in download mode. So i got it. Yes i tried it on other Broken bootloader galaxy s and it worked.
I guss this is enough and you all got what i want to say.
Thank-you

you know, download mode is not the same as recovery, just like "volume down" is not the same as "volume up"..

[Q] Bricked?

I have a a501, it was on alexandria III and it was taking forever to boot so I figured i'd update the firmware with ICS out.
I installed http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1619913 via CWM/recovery menu ver 5.5 or so and rebooted, power + volume up didn't give me a menu so I tried to reinstall the ICS bootloader, it installed like the time before except I got messages from my recovery menu like it couldn't write logs to disk (thought that was fine - thought it was being overwrote) so restarted my tablet and... nothing was unresponsive (black screen no blacklight) so I held the power button down until it shut down.
I've tried power/volume up, tried using the reset button to get into APX mode - didn't see the tablet on my computer(But I may have been impatient), tried power/volume down repeatedly, unplugged the battery and rebooted - nothing.
After I shut it down it's responsive like it's functioning somewhat, it'll turn on and off but no blacklight and nothing on the screen or vibrations.
USB debugging is on, I don't know my id
Anyone with similar problem? How did you fix it? :\
edit: apx mode is indeed working

Patience and following instructions to the letter!!! You must use nvFlash to fix this - I have given you enough info for you to recover your tab BUT you cannot do anything without your cpuid - so I suggest you begin by reading the cpuid guide thoroughly first - everything you need is in there...
As Dibbs informed, when you update your bootloader to V8, you can only do this via NVFlash.
For those of us who installed all Skirlax_CZ bootloaders, the CWM function did not arrive till Version 4 of the bootloader. Only then could you CWM the bootloaders. But..... you had to be on a version 4 bootloader "First", before you could CWM the subsequent versions of the bootloader.
If you are just starting out, then you must use NVFlash to initially install any version of the bootloader.

How to restore bricked A501?

Hello everyone, i have a Iconia Tab A501 and i can't get it to work.
When i power it up it just hangs on the Acer logo. I can enter in recovery, but any rom (i tried 3 of them) that i try to flash doesn't work. The green android with the rotating 3d-thing is there but after a few seconds it's gone and at his place there is another android with the open belly and the red warning symbol.
I can't flash it because i don't have the cpuid. The bootloader is locked. What can i do?

Sorry if this is a bit late. I'm not sure if this will work for a Iconia A501(I have A500), but you can try a hard reset.
To do this, power off, hold down volume UP(not down like to enter recovery), power up, then toggle the screen lock switch back and forth (I believe you can release the power button while doing this, just keep holding to volume control) This should equate to a factory reset(I've never done it, so I'm not sure). If it doesn't work try it again(apparently it takes a few tries)
Hope this helps!

It doesn't work. It turns on showing the acer logo and hangs.
It's probably done the same as mine, died permanently. Nothing you can do about it. It's most likely that the mmc is broken or has become unsoldered. Sorry but I suspect it's toast.

How long did you wait? It takes some time to boot up first time. If you still have issues you can try force it into APX mode and flash the bootloader and recovery again, then reflash the stock ROM in recovery. http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1619913
Or it could be completely dead like zardoz99 says. That would seriously suck.
EDIT:
Read again. Y U HAVE NO CPUID!?

You can't choose the OEM lock until you re-lock the bootloader. You do that the same way you unlocked it. But be warned, it does a factory reset also, which means you have to go through the whole setup proceedure again. BTW, it is unlocking the bootloader that causes the message, not the OEM lock. Also, do you know that you don't have to wait for that message to disappear on it own. If you tap the power button when it appears, it goes away without the delay.

Did you actually read my post. OEM and bootloader locks are two entirely different things. When you first unlocked your tablet, there were two steps involved. FIRST, you had to enable developer mode and turn on OEM enable. THEN, you had to unlock the bootloader by holding the proper buttons when powering up. To relock, you have to do that in reverse. First relock the bootloader, using the same buttons you did to unlock, and then, and only then, you can disable OEM. And the second step is optional. You don't have to disable OEM to get rid of the message.
Edit: And "reversing the procedure" does work if you do it right. It is the ONLY way to relock the bootloader and I have done it. So I know it works.
reedit: OK, I just did it again on my T510. Turn the tablet off. Plug the cable into the PC but NOT the tablet. Hold both the vol up and down buttons and then plugin the cable from the PC. When the green screen appears, release the buttons and then press and hold the vol up till the next screen appears. IT WORKS!

No I do NOT mean download/fastboot mode. Go back and research how to UNLOCK the bootloader. IT DOES NOT USE FASTBOOT. You DO NOT use fastboot to unlock Samsung devices. And "factory reset" via Odin is meaningless. You don't use Odin to unlock the bootloader either. BTW, Samsung and most other reputable tablet makers, intentionally make it hard to unlock their devices because it is a serious security risk if you don't know what you are doing. Do you know what you are doing?

Just wanted to pop on and say thanks lewmur, I was getting sick of not being able to update and singe I bought a Galaxy S9+ I cant root that, might as well keep them both stock and use "altered" apk install files. Brah its so easy to unlock oem!
I'm so shocked and surprised that you guys haven't figured out how to unlock bootloader. Aren't you guys like the smartest computer wizards alive? Anywho... Ok kid this is how you unlock oem and will allow you to install any os you want.
Step one: power off your phone.
Step two: when you power off your phone and at the moment that your screen turns black press down and hold:
Step 3: Press both volume buttons at the same time, then after you feel the phone vibrate one time immediately...
"without lifting your fingers off of the two volume buttons" press and hold the power button.
Step 4: As you continue to hold down all three buttons at the same time.
The phone will vibrate, then it will take you to a green screen that states that installing a new operating system will erase your data, or void your warranty, or something like that.
Step 5: press the Volume Up Key to accept the consequences.
When you restart the phone will download an update which will allow oem unlock option to appear in Developer Mode Options.
Step 6
Go to about phone, then scroll down to Software Information, then click on Build Number 7 times. Go back to Settings and scroll all the way to the bottom and access developer options. Then scroll down until you see oem unlock. Check for notification of the update finishing.
Do all of this by the way with the phone connected to your computer. There's like a couple of tutorials online that you can find on youtube and on Library.
TADA! It worked for me just fine; ya sheee?!

Disregarding official methods of rooting your phone, is there any way of manually or forcibly patching or modifying the bootloader without permissions given by the manufacturer? Such as doing so by an outside terminal on a computer.
I understand the risks of bricking a phone device.

It's a 50/50 chance for rooting. Samsung may remove the rmm lock on the a20 series once our 2 year update period is over.
Or it may be like the Verizon samsung galaxy S4 which has still never been fully rooted.

Yeah. If not, we may get lucky with 11 anyway, google was talking about user signed gsi images being flashed through standard recovery, but I haven't heard much about it in a while.
