Is it me or has this so called lag been blown completely out of proportion with the SGS? I used to have a HTC Hero, I tell you, it's like going from riding a snail to a rocket fuselage. That phone was so slow, a phone may I add which only a year ago was seen as the 'iPhone killer'.
Please are there any previous HTC Hero users who now own a SGS? You have to speak out!
I mean sure, I've used a HTC Desire, it's very fast. But the only difference I have noticed is that on the SGS sometimes Apps take around 3secs longer to open than they should. That's it!! I mean, why are you all complaining so much! It's just as fast as the Desire except that point.
I have now had the SGS for 2 weeks, I haven't noticed any considerable slowdown. It works great! Why are you all complaining like babies? Have you installed Crysis 2 on your SGS or something, obviously your phone would never work again if you did that. Before anybody asks, I have made no changes to my SGS. I have an unlocked SGS, still on Touchwiz, no flash, no root. I don't even use task killer for God's sake. Please would someone explain to me what the big deal is?
What you have to realise is that it's not an always persistent problem. The phone in general is extremely fast, however with earlier firmwares the phone does not free up memory effectively. 3 seconds is nothing, but I recall sometimes waiting 10-15 seconds for the Dialer to launch. And when the memory is really really clogged up, it's a complete pain even pressing the home screen button (waiting 10 seconds to go to home isn't pretty either). For a phone with so much power, do you really think this is normal?
The difference must just be that I'm not a heavy app user. I still have the stock firmware the phone came with. Never had a 10 second delay with anything. Never noticed any sort of build up of lag. It works great! Do you guys install like 50 apps on your phones or something? Clearly that must be your problem.
I have never had any problems either (other than with flaky GPS).
Someone told me how to replicate the lag issue, and it boiled down to having 8-odd apps running in the background at once. I would expect the same on my multi-core 4GB RAM iMac, let alone a phone with 256MB RAM.
Not saying others are only having problems with the above situation, but it does seem like there are specific factors that cause it, which is why a lot of people have had no problems.
The phone has 512mb ram.
Just that currently, HiMem is not available (will be in froyo as a default, and if we're lucky, in the JF6 firmware as well)

I know, but until we can actually use it, we are limited to 256MB (or was it 232MB?)

And although I am not a really heavy app user, I am a heavy user, and it wasn't hard to make the phone lag quite heavily at times, so I'd say no, it has not been blown out of proportion.

More serious in some applications like mails, RSS reader. It's so slow that I don't even use my SGS for my mails, or to read news anymore.

Tachikoma_kun,
Please understand that Android does not work like the Mac OSX on an iMac, and that, if you open 8 odd apps in a row, you should _not_ have them all running in the background at once.
Android's memory management should close applications and free memory as needed. Processes will start if needed, be set to inactive as long as possible and killed if necessary. This works fine with other Android devices and obviously not with the Galaxy S.
You can read about the life cycle of Android Components at
http://developer.android.com/guide/topics/fundamentals.html
Using a task killer to free up memory might make your Galaxy S faster than not using one, but this is still a lot less efficient than it should be. In a working Android system you should use the most out of your available memory and the system should stay fast as you open and switch between applications. You should never have to think about which applications are running or not running.
Again, this works just fine with other devices. If it does not work with the Galaxy S then this is a serious flaw in the system. The flaw might be related to the slow I/O on the internal SD, or maybe there is a firmware bug besides the I/O. But it is currently not working correctly.
If you have access to 256mb memory of RAM, and you use a task killer to always keep 100MB free, then you use your device like it only had 156MB.
I also do not believe that the average customer without a technical background is able to use a task killer without shooting himself in the foot. Without knowledge about what each application and service does, and how android manages background processes, how should a normal user know what he can kill and which services he should keep running?
lag problem blown out of proportion. May be froyo update will satisfy the hunger of these power hungary geeks.

Perhaps whether a person thinks it's slow or not depends on what that person was used to?
That is exactly what i was telling people.
I come from the HTC Athena, and OMG... that thing is like crawling on sand, even with its super duper 625 Mhz CPU which by then was supposed to be the state of the art.
yet everything i did was sloooooooooooooooooooooooooooooow, using the SGS was like smooth flowing water, everything is perfect in this phone out of the box.

Im not a SGS owner but i keep noticing the reference to the desire. I did own a snapdragon device until about a week ago. (Droid Incredible). Switched to droid x. The only real reason i believe there is lag on the samsung is the touchwiz. The cpu&gpu in the SGS IS FAR SUPERIOR to that of the desire. Htc just has the most polished custom ui. If u get launcher pro id be willing to bet that lag is gonzola in a hurry. Maybe give this a try? Just trying to help my fellow androiders out. Goodluck fellas

what made you choose a Droid X vs. a SGS i9000?
the 2 phones are almost identical, except for the camera.
the lag is very real.
try opening Dolphin HD and then closing it again .....about 8+ seconds to do either, and that's with nothing else open.
instantaneous on the nexus with 2.2.
some apps are much slower than others, some there is no difference, but even the default samsung apps such as phonebook have a good lag when switching between tabs.

I agree. I'm guessing you haven't used/owned a HTC Hero? If so, you haven't experienced the PAIN!! lol.
On my side I don't have any heavy app, I don't do games, or HD stuff what I expect from my phone is to be able to show me my mail ... and that's where I have plenty of lag ( not all the time but everyday for sure).
Lag to open the mail, lag to delete the mail, lag to come back on the homescreen.
Up to 15 sec to come back from the settings menu.
My benchmark is the iphone 3GS but also the HTC P3600 and the HTC diamond which are not that fast
I have never been waiting so long in front of my phone.
Excuse me if I am working with my phone and I don't want to wait 10 sec all the time.
And stop insulting people who complains please
Oh and the comment about installing 50 apps .... please learn how android is supposed to work. I should be able to install 1000 app without any problem. Who care about the number of app installed ???
By the way, when I have a lot of lag I go in systempanel to see what it my amount of memory and it's around 30-50 Mb so it should not be a problem.
The stock messaging app seems to be laggy as all hell. Typing is sometimes painfully slow or just not responsive. Samsung told me to reset the cache but that didn't do anything.
Is there a message limit that hurts it? Is there something else that could potentially be causing this? Or is this just a problem with Touchwiz messaging app itself?

Honestly its terribly laggy. I had to resort purchasing an app. Enhanced Email and Touchdown work well if you need MS Exchange Support.
MS Exhcange Support isn't a big deal for me but thank you for the suggestion.
The gallery app has been giving me fits today too. I mean what's the point if making this super advanced phone if I have to reboot it more than I do my Windows machine.

I think he meant SMS while you are talking about Email.
This phone's screen is beautiful but the laggy performance is really bad. The SMS app is horrible.
I am terribly disappointed in this phone. The more I use it the more annoyed I get. I might just return it tomorrow and get another iPhone cause I can't stand the Lag anymore. Especially in a phone as speced out as this.

Concern Samsung and Android devices have a bad habit of not updating their devices and leaving their customers stranded. They pop out new model phones very frequently and once that happens they forget about older models and could care less about our problems.

I realize that which is part of the reason I got the S4, my S2 was no longer supported on here and battery was running dead all the damn time.
All this **** is enough to make me want to get an iPhone.
I to hated the laggy messaging. Even with 3rd party apps like SMS PRo and such it was still laggy and buggy.
Flashed CM10.1. AOSP stock Messaging app on CM10.1 is MUCH MUCH MUCH more responsive. I had the same frustrations coming from a iPhone 4S (Had 3G, 4, 4S prior for years).

I really don't understand. Samsung must realize that they are first and foremost manufacturing a phone. That's supposed to be used for calling and texting. They needed to pay 100 percent attention to these primary functions and make sure that they all worked properly. Instead of putting useless gestures and infrared they needed to insure the phone send and received texts properly. Major ball drop by samsung here. Very disappointed.

Agreed. This is why I have never used a Samsung device in the past and have stuck with iPhones since iPhone 3G before Android was even out there. Got tired of the small screen, wanted larger screen and higher resolution so jumped ****.
Really, try CM10.1. Its so much better without Samsung's bloatware. It's a whole different phone with it.
I also returned my Samsung Galaxy Tab 2 7.0" because of its laggyness last year until I tried CM9/CM10/CM10.1 on it. Totally made me think diferently. Also got me into the world of CM and flashing stuff so I knew what I was doing for my S4.

My first android phone was an HTC Aria/Liberty and I put CM7 on it so I'm sort of familiar with the process and if it comes down to it and this lagginess continues I'll install CM10.1 on the S4. I didn't realize they had a stable build for the S4 yet though.

gosmspro lags less, but with s-voice disabled/frozen and touchwizUI frozen (as well as other google services i dont use) on stock kernel/rom phone is lightning quick. i even have it severely underclocked most of the time with setCPU (486-1132 screen on, 386-386 with screen off). no issues in any app, even tried some 3d games to test performance with CPU limited to 1.1Ghz. no difference.

Picked up the Note 3 yesterday and so far I'm loving it, however, there have been a handful of times where the device has lagged or momentarily froze. Not only does it hang, but the app crashes too. This has happened with the built-in Samsung apps.
If I remember correctly, I was bouncing around my home screen and app drawer (TouchWiz). I specifically remember swiping up from the bottom to open Flipboard, it hung, then I got a message stating My Magazine has crashed and stopped..
This is not what I was expecting from my new Note 3 :crying:
EDIT: Also, the screen doesn't come on instantly when I click the lock button. There's usually a slight delay.
yeah i get minor lag every now and then but i find that normal as i have ALOT of apps running... i was haing tw home FC, i think it FCed 3 or 4 times didnt happen again but i still uninstalled it via tibu cuz i am using nova instead... as for the waking lag yeah i get that sometimes as well but not all the time.... some widgets like the clock widget i have on my homscreen/lockscreen take 5-10 secs to load...
PS- btw this question belongs in the Q&A section, not the general section

It all depends on your definition of "lag." There's the occasional stutter or drag working with or within certain apps or combination of apps but for the most part the N3's incredibly fluid. Everyone here uses a different combination of apps with some varying in quality from outdated crap to highly polished. So everyone's experiences are going to be different. That, along with different wireless and sync environments, is why people’s battery stats are all over the place.
I have 131 apps on my device and haven't experienced a FC or any strange behavior and I've been using the phone for almost two weeks.

I know "lag" is a very subjective term, so I'll try to give you a specific example I just experienced:
Browsing in Facebook, I open someone's photostream. I click a photo and nothing happens. I click an album and it highlights, but doesn't open. Click another picture.. nothing. So I lock the screen and unlock it and it works.
This has also happened when browsing through Google Play and trying to download apps. I search, click the app, but it doesn't open. It just highlights the item I clicked.

very occasionally touch barely works , only spen works. reboot clears it.
very rarely also I get an app hang or Fc, not even rooted yet. but overall runs like a dream.
I know if this was a custom or ASOP ROM, I wouldnt have those issues.

letsgophilly, do you have the octa version?

The Snapdragon 800 is super fluid for me.
You might need to wait until Samsung brings the HMP update to the octa variant if you have it.
---------- Post added at 01:55 PM ---------- Previous post was at 01:52 PM ----------
PS: the item highlight issue in the PlayStore is a playstore bug and is not "lag".
The fix is clicking another item, going back and reselecting what you originally wanted.
This happens occasionally.

You have the S800 version.
Bugs it is then, Google will have to fix the playstore, also Samsung has to fix that "My Magazine" thing, I mean it runs fast but the first load and the updating is quite slow and buggy.
Other than that, It's fast everywhere I noticed, and it should be with that hardware.

There's no such thing as a "SM-900" or "SM-9005" ROM. Each regional ROM is different and can have different versions of Samsung's own apps and third party apps that are bundled with it. So one region could have force closes out-of-the-box while another doesn't.
I'll give you an example. When the N10.1 came out people were complaining they couldn't import PDFs in to S Note. After researching it, based on region, there were almost a dozen different versions of S Note used in the various ROMs Samsung deployed worldwide. Two of those versions were borked and couldn’t import PDFs. And that was within 90 days of the N10.1's release. So it's very possible that the strange behavior people are reporting could be regional. OP and I both have U.S. versions of the SM-9005 but are on two different carriers. So if he's experiencing the behavior he described after a hard reset it's probably something unique to his carrier's (Verizon) version of the s/w.
Well then, poor exynos buyers, I was tempted to get one for that lone reason, no I don't regret passing it at all and getting the 9005.

Can you confirm a wake lag?
This was an issue on the Note II as well. Even when disabling S-Wake and all that stuff, it still had a delay.
I was always led to believe it was a "feature" of the exynos with the way it handled sleeping. I was hoping that the Qualcomm processor would not have this issue???

I definitely see wake lag. I just clicked my home button and the display turned on almost a full second later.
I have power button lag. Takes a full second after pressing the power button to sleep sometimes. Clearing processes from RAM usually solves this.

I have the snapdragon I am getting FC in Lots of apps. Also getting the occasional unresponsive touch. My note 2 firmly in my wife's hands never hiccuped in the 12 months I used it. Loving the N3 but to be honest the N2 was the best phone I ever owned it's still like new and flies. I remember lots of similar stories with the early N2 having problems. Maybe there are hood and bad ones. The N2 is the first phone I haven't rooted or used a launcher on. Tried, next. Apex. Nova, Themer, and aviate so far on the N3. My brain tells me everything on the N3 is better, but my heart says different. I have had the N3 since launch here in Europe on the 25th so had plenty of time with it. Factory reset I think. Must say the stock video player with good headphones is amazing. Watch a movie streaming last night with surround sound, amazing.

Incredibly annoying why Samsung chose to persist with this.

i have had music force close a few times but nothing else. why dont u try a factory reset? i would wipe dalvik cache too but i dont know if u can do it without root.
give the n3 a chance to receive a few updates before you make up your mind. also could be initial hardware that is faulty, the very first note 2 i got had quite a few issues. sold and bought a new one few months later and that one lasted me until n3.
Just as a thought maybe a 4.3 android thing, I know when my old N7 got 4.3 it was not as stable as the previous version, also my note 8.0 and note 2 are fast more stable than my Note 3. Unloaded a load of app today and it seems better, it is fast and I am sure Samsung will issue updates. Be interesting to see how the N2 and S4 deal with version 4.3

I don't have a good first impression of my S6.
The stock rom eats 8G of the internal storage.
It has a terrible lag, and jitters all over the place. Even just scrolling up and down in the settings screen is laggy. The lag in Chrome gets very frustrating very quickly
Too much bloatware. A whole microsoft suite (among other things) that I will never use and cannot uninstall
Touchwiz launcher, its not really great
On the plus side
the finger scanner is good.
The screen is really nice, but I suppose rendering all those pixels is whats causing it to lag like crazy.
Pleased that samsung made a theme chooser. At last we can remove the awful default turquoise colours.
But I immediately know I'm going to have to root and put a custom rom on here to get it working to my satisfaction .... is there any ROM recommendations to remove all lags, stutters and bloatware?
Is it just me? I am surprised I don't see a ton of people complaining about this
Im on xtrestolite deo mod and have no of the problem i had with stock u could always get titanium backup and freeze all that bloat might help. I know that when i ran stock it would often run out of ram. Now i have betwewn 1 and 1.4gb free.
Wait for the Marshmallow update and judge it again then. Samsung redesigned the whole TouchWiz thing launcher, icons, performance everything. From what I read from the beta is really promising and fast.
Never saw any lag, stock or otherwise. I did occasionally have some low ram redraws on stock, but on roms those are long gone. Maybe take a look in your application manager at what's running and see if there's any unnecessary junk running that's eating your ram. Did it start or persist from any old software, or show up from new software ie updates?

Me too, no lag at all, with stock BUT... if you run MM BETA and then go back to 5.1.1 you will see a very "slow device"
This phone does lag like hell, I had one about 7 months a go and that wasn't too bad.
Picked one up last week and the difference is shocking now, have tried different launchers and no difference.
Makes me laugh how Samsung can't seem to make a phone that is smooth. I have even swapped this out for another one.
All this guff about no more lag in the press conference.
Never had any issues even before I rooted and put a stock modified rom, only thing I would have liked better is battery life, but I get a days use out of it atleast
No offense, but anyone saying the S6 doesn't lag or stutter must either not know what we're talking about or have low fps eyes ?. This phone is an absolute lagfest on stock firmware.
Try scrolling in Google+ or even Tapatalk and you'll see dropped frames all over the place.
Just about the only thing that helps is flashing a custom kernel and enabling enforced mode (try Unikernel for size). That makes a world of difference.
yes I have the s6 since 4 months now. before I had a oneplus one. this was fast. but the s6 is very Laggy. however it has the best benchmarks but the Ui it's definitely Laggy on every edge. so I had a lot of other devices before. for me the most qualcom devices are running smoother. but there are some other positive aspects on the s6

Lag?? U sure, mate? I'm using the S6 for more than a few months now and there is no lag in the UI. Maybe some minor frame drops occasionally (I'm sensitive to those , most people don't notice them), but no lag. It's not normal.
Mine is stock with some native apps disabled. Also I jave turned off the smart manager protection. And I can compare it with Nexus 5. I'v had many Android devices and I know what I'm talking about.

I've also owned countless Android devices (including Nexus). Most recently I came from an OPO and a Z3C before the S6. GUI lag/stutter is a pet peeve of mine with Android, and while the OPO was almost perfect after some optimization and the Z3C turned out OK, the S6 is frankly a joke in comparison. Especially considering its theoretically superior performance.

I think I'll try the Samsung marshmallow firmware, cheers for the tip @Riardon ... if its just the same I'll try some custom roms.
I'm kinda glad others confirm the lag/stuttering and its not just me.
For comparison, the phone I am replacing is a S5 running Exodus rom, there is absolutely zero lag or frames dropped in any scrolling or animations. It really makes the S6 look bad. Not what I expected as the S5 is like 18 months old now.
Here is a quick video I made for the non-believers out there. S6 is on the left. It doesn't matter that the video is not in focus (because of my finger getting in the way), the point I am trying to make is scrolling should be smooth on a new, expensive Android phone, I am astonished at how bad it is on the S6. Other places in the phone are also bad, Chrome is the worst though.

Keep in mind, however, if you do root you will most likely trip the knox counter on your device. This could cause some problems with warranty, and you would not be able to use Samsung pay on the device. If these things don't matter to you. Rooting is okay.

Rooting/flashing ROMs/kernels can be done without tripping knox by using the engineering bootloader. You'll find great tutorials here on xda.
My S6 has never lagged, not even on stock. I found it to be smooth in generally and I am someone who looks at framedrops and any other possible slowdowns.
Also guys don't forget to check your apps. It may sound weird but some well known apps causing some extra lag on top of what TouchWiz has. For example I found out that SwiftKey on my devices creates some extra lag and it's slower than other keyboards. Some apps are just not optimized well and this the reason some guys see worse lags and stutters than others. This one is tricky to determine those apps but you have to experiment. TouchWiz as it is now yes it's laggy but not worse than older TouchWin on S5 for example. Still needs work but Marshmallow is promising. Wait until then guys you may surprised pleasantly. Unfortunately some apps on Android running like sh***t and we blame the phone sometimes. And remember to always keep your phone at minimal. Disable all extra stuff you don't use and use only the apps you actually use often or truly need. This is for all phones not only for this one.

If I understand correctly using the engineering bootloader results in the loss of use of the fingerprint scanner.

Correct. So worth it imho though.
Can anyone please report if they are seeing lots of crazy frame drops on this phone? I'm running rooted Xxx No Limits, but have observed the same on Elemental OS too. When you turn on 'Profile GPU Rendering' in the Developer Settings to 'On screen bars', I see a crazy amount of frame drops every where. I bought this phone because it is suppose to offer the best smoothness and performance rivaling only the Pixel, specially after the fantastic 3T. Attached are some images showing the frame drops on even mundane tasks like scrolling Settings menu. Is anyone else seeing this behavior?
I use Action Launcher, but can anyone report if they see this on their stock launcher or other launchers?
PS: The phone 'seems' smooth and fast when doing these tasks. It doesn't seem to slow down and drop frames like crazy like an S8 or G6, which can be seen with the naked eye. It's only when I turn on GPU profiling that I can detect these frame drops. Is the GPU profiling reporting 'broken' and incorrectly reporting lots of frame drops? I'm confused.
Hey, I just checked and I got the exact same results, maybe even a bit more drops than you do. I'm using the stock launcher. Phone is absolutely smooth aside from that. I'm not sure, but this may be in correspondence with the jelly-scrolling issue? I'm not sure if I'm affected though, if yes, the jelly effect is minimal.
Are you affected by the jelly scrolling?

I don't see the jelly scrolling effect on my phone. I'm not sure if this frame drop issue and the jelly scrolling effect are related. Its interesting to know that you see a lot more frame drops in the rendering.
i agreed with you, for this phone having the latest 835 which is suppose to give a straight line of performance (no frame drops) yet i see a lot of those
what the hell is going on with this phone ...
i dont know if its the phone or the softwere but im so returning, the only reason i bought was because of the 835 and because its was the latest and will give you continues performance, its all a lie
Probably because the screen is upside down!

Just tested on a Galaxy S8 and that graph looks even worst!!!!
What's happening?!?! Snap 835 is the culprit?
But I've seen a review with the HTC U11 and it doesn't do this.
Yeah mine is far from smooth as well, dunno,it just does not scroll smooth, my Nexus 5 on MIUI is soooo much smoother, way less frame drops.. I suppose theissue will vanish with the right ROM / Optmization, perhaps changing to a different CPU governor could help already..
Is this really a big deal if you can't see it until you run this log that shows you its happening?

People are like: "I didn't know I had a problem until I ran this app now I'm like O..M..G!". These people can't be for real. They should try standing on there heads, looking in a mirror, with the phone upside down.. see how it scores.

Its like the Jelly scrolling thing. I bet 85% of the people *****ing about it haven't even held a OP5. I watched those videos and then paid close attention to my 6P, guess what? It does the same damn thing!
About the only real issues I have seen are the WiFi and autobrightness issues, and camera performance. The WiFi seems to have been fixed and the camera could and most likely will be improved... I hope.
And from what I have seen out of the camera isn't bad, but it is very average for a phone bought 2 years ago. I just believe the hardware is much more capable of better results.

I'm right there with you brother.. The auto brightness has been a "real" issue for me. I have not had the jelly thing but then again I didn't go looking for it. The camera? Well I took what I though were some really nice looking photos over the 4th.

Thank god I am not the only one, reading through some of the threads I am starting to feel like I am the crazy here. People are like "The phone is smooth but this tool is showing frame drops, **** Oneplus, I am returning this phone."
So they will return a 500€ flagship which runs smooth and they dont notice lags without a tool? They expect that the CPU is the cause of frame drops?
Seriously, this must be a joke. Its just looking for a problem when you dont have one.
I do notice the jelly scrolling, but its minimal, so its kinda cool, like a subtle animation.
Camera could be better but nobody can say its bad, they just overhyped it and didn't meet expectation.
Battery life is like out of this world, I got 8h of SoT, good luck on other phones with that.
No other issues were encountered in the meantime. Perfect phone.
I get drops with the launcher, inc app drawer but it's not significant. I'm currently using a custom kernel as well.
