Clearing Cache without recovery - Galaxy S 4 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hi All,
I have root and want to try some build.prop tweaks, but am aware that you have to clear cache after you change the file. I usually do this via CWM but, clearly that isn't an option yet for the 9505
I've been poking around Android Tuner Free and notice an option to "Clear all caches" in the App Mgr. Would this do the same as clearing the dalvik cache through CWM? I don't want to try this without having a backup and a working recovery to break out of bootloops.
Thanks for any help you can give,
Mike.

[Q] [CM7RC1] App Installation Issues

A week or so ago, I flashed "CyanogenMod-7.0.0-RC1-Liberty" from Rom Manager.
Ever since then, I've been having some issues when installing apps from the Market. Sometimes, installation will fail, giving me the message "Insufficient Storage Space". I checked my settings, and I have quite a bit of space left.
Has this been an issue for anyone else, and does anybody have a solution?
I wouldn't use rom manger at all. Doesn't sometimes work with the aria. Flash rom using your Clockwork recovery. That's a much trusted way.
Oh, really?
I guess I've been doing it wrong all along.
So should I reflash manually?
Yes, I would wipe and reflash from clockwork. Get to it by holding the down volume button while turning on the phone and selecting recovery.
Sent from my Aria - CM7 Build 2-5
Thanks.
And by "wipe" do you include wiping the delvik cache?
do the wipe data/factory reset in clockwork, then in advanced, wipe dalvik cache.
wiping the cache isn't always required, but it won't hurt you.

[Q] unable to install custom roms / custom screen resolution

I recently had my DX replaced with a new one, and this one seems different, both hardware-wise and software-wise. It is rooted, has CWM and I can back up / restore from cwm fine.
However, when I try to set a smaller screen size (so more shows up on screen), I then cannot use the phone app. It simply exits. Also, I am not able to install any custom roms - just bootloops.
Any help is appreciated.
I recall issues with the blur phone when changing the lcd density.
You can solve this by either not changing the density, or replacing the blur phone with something else.
I'm not sure if you can just pull an aosp phone app from another rom, or if you have to use another rom without the blur phone
Hate to ask what is sometimes the obvious, but when you flash a custom rom, did you format Data and Cache?

Its always good to format Dalvik Cache. I always format System/Data and Dalvik Cache before installing any ROM's.

Am I wrong is saying that if you formated /data, then you already wiped Dalvik cache since it's located in /data/dalvik-cache?
I don't want to start an argument. I'm just wondering about the benefits of wiping the Dalvik Cache after you already wiped/formated /data.
When switching ROMs, I've always just wiped /system, /data, /cache and never had any problems arise.

[Q] Error wiping dalvik cache

So, i am in the process of changing roms on my iconia, i restore factory defaults, wipe the cache, wipe battery status, and then clear the dalvik cache. when I go to wipe the dalvik cache, i get E:unkown volume for path [/sd-ext]. It proceeds to wipe the dalvik cache and i get no errors when reflashing my rom (taboony) or installing villans custom kernel. It flashes everything correctly but when I load my iconia, i get a fc when loading super user. I reinstalled iconia root which temporaroly fixed my fc, but after reboot again i get fc when loading su and no fix. Any idea whats happening and how I can fix it. Sorry about the typos here, using a netbook and have sore wrists.
The Error message you get is no problem because you dont have an ext Partition on you SD card. And if there is no ext Partition the recovery will not find it and gives you this message so dont worry about this.
Because of superuser: Go to Rom Manager and choose "fix permissions" and let it do its thing. Normaly this helps with FCs.
If this does not help. Go to settings - applications - manage applications - search for superuser and delete all Data at superuser app.
I hope it helps.

Sure thing fixed permissions solved my fC issue. Thanks much

[TPT] CM10 Cannot wipe cache

Hi everyone, I recently rooted my 16GB WE TPT and installed cm10 v.0.8.1 and I love the performance and everything, if only there were no reboots. After reading in this forum I wanted to try to reinstall things from scratch wiping everything. For some reason I don't seem to be able to to anything with the data that is on my TPT. Neither can I do a factory reset from settings nor can I wipe data from Recovery. It doesn't display an error but it just doesn't delete anything. Then I tried to restore my backup from my original rom but this doesn't work either: it says error while restoring data (after recovery and system).
Can anyone help me? Could I have accidentally locked the data or anything?
Btw, Google Play has stopped working after my last try to restore stock and then install cm10 again.
In cwm you find under advanced a setting called "fix permissions". Try that

Hi, i had big problems with my Data-Partition. The Partition was read-only. No wipe with CWM was possible. Is that the same problem what you have? Do you have an logcat? Any error-messages?
Wiping was only possible with adb...

I don't have the same error messages you have/had, but I could image that my data partition is also read only since I can neither delete or install anything. What did you do to get rid of that problem?
The solution was to completely format the data permission. This can't be done in CWM directly because CWM tries to keep the folder /data/media, which is your internal sd-card and only deletes the other files (That's obviously not formating). In the link you can find a zip files that you can "flash" in CWM, it will format the data partition and does nothing else. After using it you should also manually wipe the cache using CWM.
Like i said, this will include your internal sdcard! Make backups first if you have important data stored on it!

I need to clear it - if I do "wipe data/factory reset" in stock ICS recovery menu - will it cause deleting ROM (and reboot will make brick) OR just will get it back to clean factory ROM?
I found few threads here about "wipe data"-thing, but it seems to me, that every version of Android / custom ROM / recovery type could behave different.

Stuck at boot 'Launching apps'

Hi all,
Since I tried to update my phone, I'm stuck at boot after updating apps.
Screen displays 'Launching apps' but the phone seams stuck.
I already triedd to wipe cache and dalvik cache.
I also wipe several partitions (including cache, dalvik cache, system, data) and then try again to install and boot the ROM but same result.
Finally I wiped all the partitions (cache, dalvik cache, system, data, internal data) and install ROM again but I'm still facing the problem
Then I found this thread : http://forum.xda-developers.com/galaxy-nexus/help/stuck-android-upgrading-starting-apps-t2825113
So I tried to use 'Fix permissions' option without any success.
After that, I also connected to the device with adb and execute fix_permissions.sh script provided in the thread by it doesn't work better.
Do you have any idea how to fix that?
Thanks by advance.
Have you tried sideloading another ROM and flashing to see if the issue still persists? I assume you get this after it optimizes all the Apps?
I forgot that I have no more access neither to adb nor fastboot...
I read that my last chance is LGNPST.
Do you have any recent pointers to a process to recover my phone, please?
Thanks
