[Q] Format system,data, boot, Wipe cache, dalvic!!! Please help clarify

I am going from Autonootered 1.1 to the latest nightly CM7 with Dalgrins Kernel using CWM
Please advise
1. Before installing CM7 what all should I wipe / format
2. After installing CM7 and kernel what all should I wipe/format
Also when I update to a newer nightly later
1. Before installing the newer nightly what all should I wipe / format
2. After installing newer nightly what all should I wipe/format
3. When updating to a newer nightly do I nned to install Dalgrins kernel again

Anyone ? would appreciate some help

Whenever I try to install a new nightly I have to wipe everything. If I don't all the apps when I try to open them just flash real quick then close. I have titanium backup so its not very hard restoring sense I can just restore all apps + data which makes it a very painless process.

In the Nook General forum user eyeballer has an excellent step-by-step guide for installing CM7. Follow his directions and you will be fine. In general, you do not need to do a complete wipe of everything to install CM7 or to update between versions of CM7.

Can someone please explain when to do each of the following?
Reformat
Wipe Data
Wipe Cache
Wipe Dalvik
I want to have the cleanest install, so do I do all?

If you look in my tips thread linked in my signature, I explain what you need to wipe in what situation. But I will explain just a little here.
Ordinarily if you are moving from just one nightly to another nightly of the same rom, just wipe dalvik cache.
If you are moving from one type of rom to another, it is best to do just a factory reset. A factory reset wipes /data, /cache and clears any apps you installed to SD. (And a factory reset automatically wipes dalvik cache since it is located in /data and /cache.)
Never wipe /boot and the new rom automatically wipes /system so you should not have to ordinarily wipe that.
But I have found if you are moving from a CM rom back to stock you need to do a full format with my format zip in my tips thread. It formats /system, /data and /cache completely where using CWM does not.

Wipe is the same as formatting.
Factory reset is listed in CWM as 'factory reset/wipe data'. And it is shown on the main menu. It does what I said earlier, it wipes /data, /cache and clears apps installed to SD.
Wipe dalvik is shown in CWM in the 'advanced' menu.
Those wipes or formats that are shown in CWM under 'mounts and storage' should rarely be used.

Quick off-topic question:
I have the rooted STOCK ROM and I deleted/edited some system files. Should I revert back to a nandroid back up with the system files in tact, or should I be ok to flash the new official rooted JB ROM (when it comes out) with some system files missing and/or renamed? thanks =)

If you are going to flash the new JB ROM over the top of stock, you do not have to do anything to the stock ROM first. It will be wiped entirely by the new JB ROM as it is installed. But I would do a factory reset/wipe data first as I said in my earlier post.

Oh ok, thanks! So, just to re-affirm, I don't have to revert back to a STOCK ROM with system files unedited in order to flash JB?
Before flashing JB rom, I will absolutely wipe data, cache, and dalvik prior to flashing! Thanks! :cyclops:

No, no, no. Are you not reading my posts? You do not wipe data, cache, and dalvik when you install a new ROM. Just do a 'factory reset/wipe data'. That wipes everything for you. The other wipes are redundant!
And to re-iterate, you have to do NOTHING to stock before flashing the JB ROM. Leave it exactly as is.

Can I pick your brain a little bit?
I had an odd thing happen to me......I rooted and went all delete-happy and deleted a bunch of stuff from system/app without making a nandroid backup...of course stuff stopped working properly, so I downloaded the stock rom rooted and flashed that (with wiping data, cache, and dalvik---even though wiping cache and davlik is unncessary as you explained), but those files I deleted were still missing
The only way I got them back was to do what is listed here (http://forum.xda-developers.com/show....php?t=1904099) and start all over from a non rooted state
Any idea why? If I would have flashed the rooted stock ROM, wouldn't it have wiped my /system too?
PS: I'm reading your tips thread now....just got off work

You said you downloaded the 'stock rom rooted'. Where did you get that? Also as I explained in my tips thread, sometimes CWM does not wipe things as cleanly as it should. I cannot explain why. In those circumstances I flash my format zip from my tips thread. I suspect that that rom you said you downloaded that you said was rooted was not set up to format the /system.
Also that link you quoted does not work so I can't look at that page.

You flashed Samsung roms to your Nook Color? This is a Nook Color forum. All the stuff I have been telling you applies to the Nook Color and the CWM built for the Nook Color. Are you on another device?

LOL, well I learned something here. If users start asking questions that do not quite jib with having a Nook Color, I had better ask more questions before I start spouting stuff. I am really glad I added assert statements to my zips to make sure the user is on a Nook Color before the flash will attempt to install. It could have been a real disaster for you if you had tried to flash my format partitions zip on your SGIII and it was allowed to install. I am going to make sure I have that assert statement in every zip I make, just to protect users.
But most of what I told you about CWM should apply to the SGIII version of CWM.

Cannot flash any ROM's

Hello, I have recently been unable to flash ROM's succesfully.
I have Clockwork MOD 4.0.0.2 installed as it came with CF-Root, and I am on stock 2.3.5 KI3.
I have tried flashing several roms, and while it says install complete, whenever it restarts, it is on a boot loop, where it won't go past the Galaxy S II bit with the yellow triangle, I have to flash the stock rom again using odin to even use the phone, I have tried to flash other recovery versions, like 4.0.0.14 and 5.1.2.6 (I think it is) but they all come up with errors mounting or getting recovery.log or something, could you please help?

Did you try to do a full wipe?
Most issues can be resolved by this.
In the CWM menu chose the factory reset/full wipe. (Don't worry it won't touch your files on the internal SD card)
Do a cache wipe and in the advanced menu do a dalvik cache wipe.
Some recommend to do this procedure twice, but you should be settled with doing it once

Yeah I did all that, didn't help, the progress bar gets half way and says complete :S I have downloaded the ROMs several times aswell incase they were corrupt, still didn't help.

Take out the battery, wait a bit, put it back in. Do all the wipe and formatting procedures (perhaps twice) and format the internal sd card as well and wipe the battery stats (just to be sure)

[Q] flashing ROM, lost SD card contents

This has been bugging me and I can't seem to find anything on here to explain it.
I have installed custom ROMs on my N7. Problem is most ROM instructions say to do a full wipe/factory reset. When I do that, the downloaded ROM that was sitting on the SDCard gets wiped out as well.
I then have to go back and search for info on how to reset/restore the N7 and start all over, because the recovery (both CWM and TeamWin) don't let me mount the SD card to copy the needed zip over.
How can I do the recommended data wipe without losing the sd card contents?
Failing that, what's easiest way to get the ROM zip back on the N7 when the recovery won't allow it?

just do a 'factory reset' in custom recovery...then flash a rom

I use TWRP & don't wipe everything, just System & Factory (to delete installed apps).
This is after wiping Cache & Dalvik Cache.
Unless I'm missing something a data wipe will wipe everything except recovery.
I don't think we have the option to exempt the media folder like on other devices.
(you type faster than me PG)

I appreciate the suggestions, and I've done the factory wipe. It wiped out the /SDcard folder contents where the zips were.
How do I get zips back on the N7? tried ADB, tried sideload from TWRP, nothing works.
Having many more problems than the last time I did this.

factory reset in TWRP doesnt touch /data/media
are you sure you are on the most recent version of recovery?

updated to latest recovery version, that seemed to be my issue. sd card now untouched.

Pirateghost speaks the truth.
The stock recovery however, wipes everything with it's "factory reset".
It's a little bit unfortunate that the identical terminology is used. No doubt new folks will occasionally get bit by assuming they are the same.
I haven't used cwm yet; not sure what it means by "factory reset" - or even if it uses that terminology.

[Q] Keeps restarting.

I recently did not install or update applications. A few hours ago, i opened phone and when i clicked an app, it gave error "the xx applciaton has stopped". For example twitter whatsapp but not camera but in camera there was no gallery.
I restarted a few times and now i can not beopened, keeps restarting after loading os and when it says "preparinbg sd card" , it restarts.
I can not remember but my rom is aurorasp 4.0.4
I dont want to lose data, how can i backup? My pc doesnot see while phone in pink screen or while power off. What can i do?
(in pink screen, ican only see image file)

Any hlp, i can not open, keeps reastarting

Is not there a way not to lose data and to reset, maybe updating instead of flashing?

Yes, you can save your phone's data using adb:

adb pull /data /path/to/save/data
For example, if I want to save my data in a folder called 'data' on the desktop of my computer, I would use this:

Rom is i guess auror4v4, i installed 2-3 months ago.
Model is i think u8800, in back it is wirtten.

Can you go into recovery? If you can then go into recovery and backup your ROM. After that, get a CyanogenMod JB ROM in you phone from recovery, and install that CyanogenMod on top of aurora. You can wipe cache and dalvik cache. That will not delete your data.

[Q] [Solved] Data not being formatted!

I have installed Ultra Gb revolutionary 1.6 Rom and have been using it for a while. I wanted to remove all content on phone..so i tried to wipe data and reinstall the rom again. Rom flashed correctly and i rebooted the phone..but user apps were not removed, they are still on the phone.
I tried changing kernel, flash another rom, flashed utra gb again, the apps are still there, why?

You can try to conenct your sdcard to your PC and delete .android_secure, it contains sd apps that don't get deleted with /data
If it doesn't work you can use Wipe data option in settings :good:

Well, that may be a kernel issue! Try to install stock kernel/ROM via odin and get it all clean!

I think that's not the kernel, he said he tried to change it, i think he haves a problem because /data is not mounted,
OP use CWM and mount /data, then do wipe data & cache

While selecting Factory reset on cwm, data & cache are automatically mounted and both data, cache and .andtoid_secure is wiped! I'm jst sharing my experience, it happened with me few times while using percy_g2 kernel! The best option for me was odin!

In CWM in general partition is mounted when wiped, I think switching kernel and try again
Flash another CM kernel and wipe data then return to your kernel, or do a factory reset from setting in phone

Try to use odin. Your userdata.img may be Corrupted

Well a simple solution to the problem :
1.Go to CWM,mount all the partitions and flash percy's kernel (CyanogenMod #2)
2.Go back and then go to advanced > reboot recovery
3.Now you'll be in Percy's recovery and from there,under mounts and storage,format data and format cache.
4.Go back and then go to mounts and storage and mount all the partitions.
5.Flash back to bieltv.3's kernel and reboot.

Finally, i had to flash flash stock Rom via Odin and go back to ultra gb.. Thanks for all the help guys
