Cannot flash any ROM's - Galaxy S II General

Hello, I have recently been unable to flash ROM's succesfully.
I have Clockwork MOD 4.0.0.2 installed as it came with CF-Root, and I am on stock 2.3.5 KI3.
I have tried flashing several roms, and while it says install complete, whenever it restarts, it is on a boot loop, where it won't go past the Galaxy S II bit with the yellow triangle, I have to flash the stock rom again using odin to even use the phone, I have tried to flash other recovery versions, like 4.0.0.14 and 5.1.2.6 (I think it is) but they all come up with errors mounting or getting recovery.log or something, could you please help?

Did you try to do a full wipe?
Most issues can be resolved by this.
In the CWM menu chose the factory reset/full wipe. (Don't worry it won't touch your files on the internal SD card)
Do a cache wipe and in the advanced menu do a dalvik cache wipe.
Some recommend to do this procedure twice, but you should be settled with doing it once
Let me know if it helped?

Yeah I did all that, didn't help, the progress bar gets half way and says complete :S I have downloaded the ROMs several times aswell incase they were corrupt, still didn't help.

Take out the battery, wait a bit, put it back in. Do all the wipe and formatting procedures (perhaps twice) and format the internal sd card as well and wipe the battery stats (just to be sure)

*solved* /data/data/com.google.videos/cache/-1755362040.cacheError while fo

ok im freaking out a little, hopping that you fine ppl here at xda can help me agian.
i had a working rom on my tab, md's alaxandra III witch was my first rom it was great but i decided to check out another with a lil more customization. i did a backup and flashed the new rom.
it was a little twichey didnt run smooth so i decided to revert back to md's rom.
the first backup had an eror, i cant remember exactly what it said something about android media, so i tried an older one.... same thing. it was able to boot after the restore, i could see my custom live wallpaper so the restore somewhat worked but there was a force close window up that would not go away.
so i decided to just whipe and flash original zip for md's ROM. that did not work now im stuck in a bootloop.
HELP ME PLEASE!!!
how can i fix this my wife will kill me if i brick this lol
this isnt looking good... usually i get a fast response
when trying to restore i get
error removing /data/data/com.google.videos/cache/-1755362040.cacheError while formatting/ data
then when it boots i get the application launcher (process com.android.launcher) has stopped unexpectedly. please try again.
this will not leave the screen
Can you get into recovery? Try wiping everything and flashing a fresh ROM like Epiphany
yes i tried puting alaxandra III fresh and got stuck in boot loop
Dont panic YOU ARE NOT BRICKED..
oK FIRST OF STOP THE PANIC ATTACK.. this will likely cause you to miss a step..
1st .. Can you boot into recovery.
if so ..
i suggest .. start from the beginning.. TALK ALL VERIABLES OUT..
Format your SD CARD with a android phone or a sd format utility.. i use the one from pnys website..
re download the rom you wish to flash . To the SD CARD WHILE its in your computer i believe is best..
put the sd card in your computer..
boot into cwm or ra
wipe as usual
format partitions NOT THE sd card
Flash the newly downloaded rom..
reboot recovery .. go back to wipe menu
re wipe. as usual..
Reboot the tablet and set your google account back up. the above will KILL ALL OF YOUR DATA...
THIS IS HOW I Get out of trouble when i toast something.. I ALSO not only backup everytime i take a backup. i try to restore it to be sure its working correctly.. and i push it to my personal ftp site .
good luck...
ok i will try this thx ill get back....
also why did my backup not work? there would not be an issue if they had worked?

This is something i always do..it insures that the rom is clean and Fresh. sometimes if you do not take this step you will have ghost directories in /sdcard. directories that did not get deleted. why this happens i have NO IDEA..
Im just a average user that follows what i read.
ok it happens so fast i cant read what come after but when i wipedata/factory i get the same
error removing /data/data/com.google.videos/cache/-1755362040.cacheError while formatting/ data
then it says something else 2 lines i think then it says done, not sure what that means ill try and keep going and see what happens
and wipe cache says e:unknwn volume for path [/sd-ext]
nope it did not work.
back to the forceclose pop up
i didnt get the set up stuff.straight to the rom. im getting notifications in bottem left like new email and wifi availible. shouldnt i get the set up ie. google account time zones and such?????
what ever that error is, its stuck in the system somehow
and one more thing i noticed.... there was a volume error i mentioned in a past post. well when im sitting here stuck with force close pop up, the volume is the only thing i can get access to. i can mute, vol up and down.
everything else is behind the pop up
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=20680452&postcount=137
im kinda lost with the sd/ext error.. you might try the above.. i think this is how you rooted to begin with... via your computer thru adb.. or you could ask in the recovery thread . the ra recovery thread talks about a similar issue not sure its the same..
wish i could do more but i would get some clarification before you proceed .
so sorry i cant do more..
oh no............. i feel that panic

Hey, trying to put Alex III back in?
Ok, you need to tell me which Recovery are you Using? Thor's CWM? Or RA Revamped?
If you're using CWM, you should go to wipes, and do all the wipes (data, Cache, Dalvik,System if it has it also, not sure if his new version has it or not) Then goto Mounts and format;
1. Format System
2. Format Cache
3. Format Dalvik
4. Format Flexrom
Install Rom.
If you get stuck in animation loop, reboot back to recovery and do wipes only, then reinstall the rom.
If using RA Revamped 3.15,
Wipe;
Data/factory reset (you shouldn't lose any data)
Dalvik
System
If boot animation, go back to RA Recovery
Data/factory reset
Dalvik
I have RA Recovery down to a fine art with this rom.
Should get you hooked up.
thanks moscow
im past boot loop.

"wipe cache says e:unknwn volume for path [/sd-ext]" is normal, don;t worry about it. But the other error, is corrupted data I believe.
Are you using Thor's CWM Recovery? What version?
or Do you use RA Revamped? What version
It sounds like you have some very corrupted data in there.
If you are using Thor's CWM. And his recovery only;
Here are the steps to completely wipe all internal data. And give it a clean internal system (according to Thor)
Note: Optional Formatting.
If you really want to remove EVERYTHING in Internal Memory, at this point, go to Backup and Restore. Select "Toggle backup and restore of internal storage (/data/media). Enable this setting by selecting it. By default, it is disabled. Then proceed to the formatting steps. This will format the Entire Internal Memory when you proceed.
Note, this will format EVERYTHING in internal memory (not ext sd card)
Select Go Back, Goto Mounts and Storage
1. Format System
2. Format Cache
3. Format Dalvik
4. Format Flexrom
After you reboot, I believe it resets back to the defaults.
---------- Post added at 11:52 PM ---------- Previous post was at 11:41 PM ----------
Oh, and once you are done, try to install the rom with the normal procedures. It's quite possible the rom on the sd was corrupted, so you may want to re-download it again if you have the same error.
IF you are running RA Revamped Recovery, then you may want to contact Drellisdee at his thread;
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1459821
He knows the procedures to do the same. I would tell you, but it's a tricky process, and he knows more about his recovery than I do.
One more note, if you have an extra SD card, even a 2gb, I would format that to FAT 32, and also copy a rom to it and use it. (remove all doubt)

[Q] Update Paranoidandroid from 1.1a to newest version

Is there a way to make an update from V1.1a to the newest version without a full flash? I wish to avoid a reinstallation of all Apps and settings
I installed 1.2 straight over the top of 1.1 and it worked no problem, all apps and data unaffected.
Otherwise, do a cwm backup, then clean install, then cwm - advanced restore - restore data.
So you have copied the V1.2 Zip-File on the SD card and flashed the version with 'AD recovery' in MAGLDR?
I have flashed v1.4a, from v1.1a .
I did this:
Copied the ROM to my SDCARD, Backed up current ROM (Just in case), wiped dalvik cache, installed ROM, fixed permissions ('cause I installed an a2sd script), rebooted into ROM.
(Took about 17 minutes) at first.
just done a 1.2a to 1.4a dirty upgrade, no backup/restore, just straight over the top, no fix permissions, nothing, , no problems (well, not in first 4 hours anyway)

In cwm choose advanced and you will see wipe dalvik
Yes, i found it, thanks for your help.
Do you think additional work is to do to erase dalvik because i'm using Link2SD? If you display an app in this program the part 'Dex' seems linked to dalvik and has moved for apps which are stored on the sd card.

Yep, they never left the system, there was no wipe,,,phone running fine, on 1.2, downloaded 1.4 using phone, restarted into cwm, ran the flash, rebooted, done. I wasn't even at home, I was on the train.
Admittedly there isn't a huge amount,, maybe 10 apps, and some data, but there was no setting up to do except for the PAD /PAL stuff,, contccts, wallpaper, shortcuts, loclscreen shortcuts, all exactly as it had been 4 minutes before.

Ok, let me clarify a few things for you:
1- I backed up my ROM (Because I was expecting a bootloop, so I did a BU just in case, it's not necessary if you know your ROM's going to boot.)
2- I wiped dalvik/fixed permissions because I use (amarullz d2ext) which requires a clean dalvik & fixing permission, if you don't use that script, you don't need them.
3- Other than that, you can do just like sam, install the update on top of your current rom and you should be good to go.

Is amarullz comparable with Link2SD, then i must do it in the same manner?
I have tried it before a few minutes, but it fails in a bootscreen with the HTC logo. Android doesn't start.
What i have done:
1) Copied the file paranoidandroid_hd2_v1.4a.zip to the SD card,
2) Enter MAGLDR
3) AD Recovery
4) Wipe Dalvik, fix permissions
5) Install Zip from SD card
6) choose Zip from SD card
7) choose the Zip and confirmed it
I have made a backup so i could restore the system and everything is like before.
Fix permissions AFTER installing the rom. There's nothing to fix until then.

Thanks man for this. When i flash new rom, i did these steps:
Task29
Install Magldr
Partition
Wipe all data/factory reset
Wipe partition cache
Wipe Dalvik cache
Flash ROM
Flash update, addons if nessessary (Do i need reboot before do this step?)
Now i know when use wipe dalvik cache.
I read somewhere about task29 many times make the phone "bad blocks". I did it hundred time when flash new ROM
May i flash new ROM without task29 & install madglr, just do from step 3 above?
Thanks all.

[TPT] CM10 Cannot wipe cache

Hi everyone, I recently rooted my 16GB WE TPT and installed cm10 v.0.8.1 and I love the performance and everything, if only there were no reboots. After reading in this forum I wanted to try to reinstall things from scratch wiping everything. For some reason I don't seem to be able to to anything with the data that is on my TPT. Neither can I do a factory reset from settings nor can I wipe data from Recovery. It doesn't display an error but it just doesn't delete anything. Then I tried to restore my backup from my original rom but this doesn't work either: it says error while restoring data (after recovery and system).
Can anyone help me? Could I have accidentally locked the data or anything?
Btw, Google Play has stopped working after my last try to restore stock and then install cm10 again.

I don't have the same error messages you have/had, but I could image that my data partition is also read only since I can neither delete or install anything. What did you do to get rid of that problem?
The solution was to completely format the data permission. This can't be done in CWM directly because CWM tries to keep the folder /data/media, which is your internal sd-card and only deletes the other files (That's obviously not formating). In the link you can find a zip files that you can "flash" in CWM, it will format the data partition and does nothing else. After using it you should also manually wipe the cache using CWM.
Like i said, this will include your internal sdcard! Make backups first if you have important data stored on it!
http://ubuntuone.com/4zKT1jqeqhR8qdGh2y4TaM
I need to clear it - if I do "wipe data/factory reset" in stock ICS recovery menu - will it cause deleting ROM (and reboot will make brick) OR just will get it back to clean factory ROM?
I found few threads here about "wipe data"-thing, but it seems to me, that every version of Android / custom ROM / recovery type could behave different.

[Q] flashing ROM, lost SD card contents

This has been bugging me and I can't seem to find anything on here to explain it.
I have installed custom ROMs on my N7. Problem is most ROM instructions say to do a full wipe/factory reset. When I do that, the downloaded ROM that was sitting on the SDCard gets wiped out as well.
I then have to go back and search for info on how to reset/restore the N7 and start all over, because the recovery (both CWM and TeamWin) don't let me mount the SD card to copy the needed zip over.
How can I do the recommended data wipe without losing the sd card contents?
Failing that, what's easiest way to get the ROM zip back on the N7 when the recovery won't allow it?
Thanks
dont wipe data...
just do a 'factory reset' in custom recovery...then flash a rom
I use TWRP & don't wipe everything, just System & Factory (to delete installed apps).
This is after wiping Cache & Dalvik Cache.
Unless I'm missing something a data wipe will wipe everything except recovery.
I don't think we have the option to exempt the media folder like on other devices.
(you type faster than me PG)
I appreciate the suggestions, and I've done the factory wipe. It wiped out the /SDcard folder contents where the zips were.
How do I get zips back on the N7? tried ADB, tried sideload from TWRP, nothing works.
Having many more problems than the last time I did this.

factory reset in TWRP doesnt touch /data/media

Pirateghost speaks the truth.
The stock recovery however, wipes everything with it's "factory reset".
It's a little bit unfortunate that the identical terminology is used. No doubt new folks will occasionally get bit by assuming they are the same.
I haven't used cwm yet; not sure what it means by "factory reset" - or even if it uses that terminology.

Did full wipe/reset to install new ROM and got frozen on Formatting /cache

Trying install this rom:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2494756
Went to CWM and started full wipe/reset and it got stuck on:
Formatting /cache
had to hard reboot with long press on power button then my stock room booted up, so means nothing formatted...
What to do next guys?
Thanks!
Install twrp, and in preferences check format method -r, fs. Somthing like this. Or wait longer, with standart formating it takes up to 20-30min!

Why does the cache take forever to format on the G2?
ditto
same thing happened to me during a rom install
as i have only had the phone a week i was a bit flustered
i did what they recommended
went into twrp settings and checked <<use rm - rt>>
and then reinstalled the rom, reboot was ok this time
so far so good
yeah i have the same question about wiping cache - on my samsung note 2 using twrp it was so fast
This is a problem in twrp i think, i was using twrp on many devices before, but didn't have any problems with wipe.
