[Q] Access Stock Recovery w/Broken Volume- Button? - Droid X General

I hate to be that guy, but since I'm used to the HTC Inspire device, development, etc... so I made a ridiculous mistake on my girlfriend's DX. I'm on .621, and after flashing CM9 I misread and thought I could only access CWM through Droid 2 Bootstrapper. Now I'm stuck in a bootloop, surprise! Where I really seem to be screwed is I still need to access the stock recovery after SBFing and her volume - button crapped out on me in the process. Is there any other way to access recovery to wipe data and fix this?
Any help is appreciated.
Sent from my Inspire 4G w/CM10.1

How is the button broken?
Remove the button and use a tpothpik or something to emulate the nubs/ and or rocker motion of the button. This button is VERY easily replaced granted you can find one.
Since its already farged try to carefully removevthe button and see if its just the rocker. Like I said you may be able to use some thing to emulate the buttons nub that actuates its function. Idk what else to suggest. Its been a while for me.
If it were me id take it apart.

[Q] Do I have clockwork installed??

Hi everyone,
My Aria was already rooted when I purchased it, I missed out on the learning curve of rooting, flashing and all the other parts related. But I'm catching up on it little by little here at XDA.
Thanks to everyone here who made it possible.
I'm running Liberated Aria R012 on the Aria now. I lost contact with the seller and I don't know who else to turn to.
Anyways, I'm wondering if I have clockwork installed in my phone. I can't find the application anywhere in my phone, but it does have a folder named 'clockworkmod' in my sdcard with the following files:
clockworkmod > backup > 2010-10-20.09.17.53 > 'boot', 'cache', 'data', 'nandroid', 'recovery' and 'system'.
The reason here is that I am learning to make backups, about recoveries and flashing. I may also flash a FroYo after learning more.
Does all this process require any special software in my computer? I am running Mac OS 10.5.8 by the way. I read in the forums that I need clockwork and unrevoked Reflash.dmg (which is downloading as I'm typing this).
I am not learning to develop anything (not in the foreseeable future), I just want to be able to really own this phone and customize with great ROMs. And to understand what you all are talking about!
Thanks for being patient with a noob.
Clockwork is the recovery, not an app. To see if you have it, hold "home" and "power" at the same time when you turn on your phone. Keep holding for about 10 seconds. You are now in recovery mode. If it says "clockwork" at the top, you agave it.

Thanks a lot man! I'll do that when i restart later

No problem. If you have the folder on your SD card, you probably have it, unless it was changed.

Hi Ranger,
I tried doing what you suggested and nothing seem to be happing besides rebooting as usually.
Held both Power and Home for 10seconds (more for a couple times). Thinking I may have read wrong, I also tried just holding only the Home button for longer periods while the phone restarts.
Does this mean I do not have Clockwork? The SD card is inside, with a clockwordmod folder.
What am I doing wrong? Your help is much appreciated.
Thank you.
Try pressing home and while still holding home, press the power button. Hold both down. Phone should go to the white HTC screen then after maybe 10 seconds it should be a black screen with green words (you can now atop pressing the buttons). That is the clockwork recovery screen. If you don't get that screen, clockwork isn't on there, and you need to reroot.

Heh, think people aren't catching that they're saying the wrong name of the button.
Turn your phone off. Hold the "Volume Down" button, then hit "Power" at the same time. Everything else said was accurate.
Different phone To get to recovery on an HTC Hero it is "home" and power.
My bad. Yeah, volume down and power will do it. My apologies to the OP.

lol, you guys showed him the wrong way. ok, you hold the "volume down" for 2 seconds then press "power" on. you will see a white screen with 4 options, 1 of them is "recovery", you select this option by pressing volume down to it and press power to select, if you see a big triangle with a "exclaimation mark" in it then your phone is not rooted, if you see white "clockworkmode..." on top then it's rooted, it's that simple...
Ocswing, you saved me!
Thanks a lot buddy I guess it's cos ranger is running on the Hero instead of the Aria (looking at the sig) —*thus the different combinations.
Anyway I was taken to a white screen with several options:
reboot, recovery, etc.
So I do have clockwork, thanks again guys!

[Q] Most Complicated Brick thus far. A cry for help..

I know I have Few or no posts at all... but I am quite experienced with Android OS... I wish i could have contributed more to this forum before asking for help on such an INTRICATE problem.. Anyways
The rundown is this, in the sequence in which the things occured... Today i set my phone down, (Droid X, Rooted, Running Apex 1.4.1) and it was working perfectly fine. I then pick it up, absolutely nothing had been done to it between me setting it down and picking it up, and the hard buttons (Menu, Home, Back, Search, Volume Rockers, Camera Button) all not working, only the lock button on top. So, I think like I always do, Battery pull time. I preform a pull, and turn the phone back on, then it's stuck on "M", just stays there. I pull again, stuck again, nothing, one more time and it goes to stock recovery mode just the Android and Exclamation triangle, (I have clockworkmod installed) but of course, no hardbuttons are working so it's false hope. I press buttons over and over out of frustration and I bring up the menu, but that's all i can do, and i have to hold the Volume rocker down, and search to even do that, but besides that i can do nothing more. So I'm stuck at what I see as a dead end, can't move through recovery because buttons aren't working for whatever reason, so i can't flash SBF, or stock reset... So I'm asking for help, please.

have you tried getting it into bootloader mode?
hold vol - + camera + search while powering the device on
if you can get into bootloader mode than you can flash an sbf file
If you tried everything you can think of and still can't get it to do anything take it back to verizon. If you can't get it to work I doubt most of the employees at verizon would be able to get it to work either
Did you try a long battery pull. 30 seconds or more?
Sent from my Droid
Pull the battery and then.plug the phone into.the wall charger. Then put the battery back in, and when the phone boots up it should boot to clockwork

[Q] Please help me

As suggested, starting a new thread.
Hello,
Straight to the point, Rooted UK Atrix, running 2.3.4. no other MOD OR rom or anything, i like motoblur.
Stupidly Used Bloatfreezer to freeze 'home' without having another launcher to return to. Can't use the phone now. Trying to reset (hard or soft i do not know the difference) and the phone reads ''fastboot'' then i toggle down using volume - to android recovery and the phone is coming up with starting rsd protocol x2 and nothing else (using the power + & - methods).
If i leave my phone to just boot it resides on a white screen teasing me with noises of logging in but i cannot see anything.
I'm really lost to be honest, i have no idea what to do and i am not good with terminology either (adw, flashboots, cm7 i have no idea what they are).
I know there are sooo many threads with different answer's so that is why i am starting a new thread.
To factory reset using recovery...
1.Power off the phone, press and hold volume down button, press power button.
2.Screen will come up with "Fastboot", press Vol down key to cycle through choices until you get "Android Recovery", press Vol up key
3.Wait for the "triangle ! / Android" screen then release the volume down button
*4.Tap on bottom right corner of the screen (may take a few times). a menu will come up
5.Tap on "wipe data/factory reset", and press OK. Another Confirmation screen will come. Press Yes and OK
6.After userdata is cleared, the "reboot system now" option will be highlighted by Default. Press OK.
7.Phone will reboot to initial setup MOTOBLUR screen.
NOTE/If on Android 2.3.4 then replace step #4 with pressing both Volume buttons at the same time. Also, use the Power button to activate the highlighted option instead of looking for the OK.

Can you get to android market via your computer? If so go to it, log in, find a launcher and install to your phone. Once rebooted to the phone, it *should* give you a choice or just automatically choose the new launcher. What does double tapping your home button bring you too? I was able to find my alternative launcher by moving around via that.
sounds like ya have frozen system files
prolly be easyest to unlock bootloader and push a custom rom to it (they work better than stock anyway
Yes i did freeze the home app.
I really mean thanks to those replied. Unfortunately i have tried the first suggestion but it doesn't let me get to step 3 with the triangle, fast boot - android recovery - can't fast boot 2 etc can't get passed that.
i have just plugged it in the Laptop, taking sim out, and it has started! i thought it was broken!! but unfortunately not 'home' yet...
SO it is at the motoblur login screen, should i log in? press factory reset? Any suggestions?
I'm not sure how to push an app straight to phone so i can install a launcher...
we're nearly there guys!
In addition to what Robkort said a few posts up ^^^ to get into the recovery on 2.3.4 you may have to scroll down once you see fastboot, until you see "Android Recovery" and press vol up - when the android dude comes up, if tapping the bottom right corner doesnt get you into recovery, press BOTH volume buttons at the same time.
It is now up and working with me just simply plugging it in, running moto sync, logging in to market from laptop and sending the launcher app..
Wifi was enabled luckily before i froze home, so when i pressed log in it went 'error' then launcher pro just popped up so now i think i just unfreeze home, turn it off, put my sim in and fingers crossed..
wish me luck!
Yahooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooo!
It's worrying how much happier i am now that i am back on top with my phone working. Pretty dependant we become!
All my widgets, and motoblur have gone, and some writing is in a different language :/ universal inbox is not there either.
Still Thanks for all the suggestions!
I suggest this thread should be 'FROZEN' or just stay open if anyone ever freezes 'home' without having another launcher installed.
I'm glad i didn't need to flash anything, put other ROMS on, hard reset losing everything, solved pretty simple luckily.

Bootloop help

Hello, first off I will say I am a total novice when it comes to messing with my phone as my upgrade is in a month so I took the plunge and all was well at first. I used SuperOneClick to root my Flipside which runs Froyo 2.2.2. I deleted the bloatware as that was my main goal. This all took place about 2 weeks ago, and no problems existed.
Yesterday when I was reading a simple text message my flipside automatically reset itself and became lodged at the Motorola M logo. I've had this issue in the past before rooting so I just removed the battery in hopes all would work well as before, sadly that wasn't the case. My phone then booted up and only the backlight appeared on the screen causing it to become stuck in the infinite bootloop. I've tried all the different hard resets with the x button and power button, the volume down button, etc. None of them work as only the backlight comes up on my screen so I can't see anything. Is there any way to unroot it or flash it back to stock?
If any of my terminology seems out of place then sorry, I honestly have not a slightest idea what to do nor what is occurring other than the bootloop.
Any help is appreciated and can you please dumb down the answer for me if possible. Thanks!

Yup just rsd the sbf back. You will lose everything however so hopefully you've got a backup somehow. Here's the sbf

I've had a similar problem as you with my flipside. Are you sure you're using the right key combination to get into rsd mode? If you can at the very least get it into bootloader mode by holding down the volume + key while holding the power button, I'm sure you can get it into rsd mode.

Theres a post here somewhere that has the combo of keys needed to get into bootloader mode. Sorry dont have it saved. Just do a search for it
Okay well I believe I found the thread you were talking about. It mentioned holding the up arrow on the keyboard combined with the power button for 4 seconds. Still nothing. I've tried the x button and power button, the volume up and power button. The thing is my screen won't work period. Nothing shows up but the backlight. So maybe I can or did get it to rsd or bootloader mode, but I can't really tell. I feel like something isn't right here. So I still can't connect it to my pc to use rsd lite.

Did you by any chance have the stock launcher app frozen and using a different launcher? Just seems if you are seeing the backlight that possibly it is on the home screen but the launcher is corrupt? Not sure.
I'm not entirely sure. I assume it's stuck in the bootloop because when I power it on the backlight changes shades and then vibrates to signal the screen past the motorola M. Then I can touch the screen and feel a vibration to simulate to slide to unlock and if my usb cable is attached my computer makes the noise to signal it sees my device, but moments later my computer dings to signal device disconnected and my phone goes through the above process again.
I feel as if I can get to the factory reset screen and such because if I time it right I can stop it from doing anything mentioned above and it just hangs as if in a menu of some sort. The downfall is I see nothing and the backlight only appears.
I may just have to scrap it and say well done phone. I can't seem to find a similar issue anywhere on the internet. All the other issues can make the bootloader screen appear and that appears to be my number on problem.
I guess I was just being a complete idiot and thought I had removed my SD card when I didn't. Well now it can connect to my pc so I can flash it. I hope all goes well. I flash it then it should be back to factory settings right?

Yes like straight out the box. The backlight issue just seems to me like a launcher problem but that wouldn't explain why you can't get into bootloader mode. Hmmm strange. Here is another way I just thought of. If it connects to the computer (you said you hear the beep) reflash it via Motorola's site. All the instructions should be there (if they still support it)
Well I was able to flash it using RSD Lite. I could hear the start up tone and such (progress), but unfortunately my screen still won't show anything. I'm assuming the worst and maybe say hardware failure as to why the screen won't boot up? It randomly disappeared when it first went into bootloop and has never come back so that is why I assumed no working screen was a software issue.

Yup that sounds like hardware failure. Haven't ever heard of the screen going out on the flipside but the atrix forums are full of them. Maybe you can get your upgrade early. Good luck

Phone wont boot [Goes directly into HBoot]

I woke up this morning and my phone will not boot. It automatically boots into the bootloader (hboot) and the up/down (volume keys) wont move the cursor to allow me to get to the recovery option. Also if I try to boot into recovery using the hard button combo it vibrates 3 times and the led turns to green, then it just sits/never gets to recovery. Since hboot is looking for the PDimg file I figure I could use this file to revert to stock but I was hoping someone here might have a better answer.
If not can someone let me know how to go about flashing with a PD15img file and where I can find a copy?
Thanks guys
Sounds like your volume button is stuck
Sent from my HTC Glacier using xda premium
Nope because it knows when I'm using them to try to go straight to recovery also the power button cannot be used to select either but it works to turn the phone one. They just stop working in hboot.
A constantly pressed button will of course also react when you're trying to boot directly to recovery. The phone doesn't "know" anything.
Another option is a stuck trackpad.
If all else fails you might try to reflash recovery and or Hboot, it never hurts to try from a clean install.

I think you guys are misunderstanding the point. This has nothing to do with the buttons. My issue is when I turn my phone on (by hitting the power button once) the phone will only boot into hboot. Once in hboot none of the keys (power or volume) work. If I try to boot directly into recovery by holding vol up/down + power; the phone will viberate 3 times and the LED lights up green. It then just sits on a blacklit black screen and does nothing else.
I am looking for eirther; Anyone that has ever had this issue and may be able to shed some light onto why it happened. Which by the way was completly random, I shut the phone off before going to sleep and woke up too it viberating like crazy then when I tried to turn it back on; this is what happened.
Or the answer to this question; How do I install a rom from hboot? Can I just install any rom as a "update" by using the method of naming it PD15IMG? Since it does search for this file when I have a sd card in at boot. But if my memory serves me correct it will ask; "Would you like to install this update?" and if my hard buttons do not work and I cannot click yes than what else can I do?
Thanks for all the help guys!!!!

And I think you can't read. You've been told in 3 posts that the phone boots directly to HBOOT because EITHER A VOLUME DOWN BUTTON OR A TRACKPAD BUTTON IS STUCK, ON ELECTRICAL LEVEL - THE CONTACTS ARE ALWAYS CLOSED. And THERE'S NOTHING YOU CAN DO ABOUT IT ON SOFTWARE/FLASHING LEVEL. You need to fix what's broken, and you've been told what's broken. Patience isn't one of my skills. Good luck from here.

I do thank you for your help but you may want to aquire some patience if you plan to continue helping people... since people in need of help are most likely confused.
Thanks though :highfive:
Im my experience Jack_R1's answers are always right and are the answer to your question. If you think otherwise one of two things is happening.
1) You did not explain your problem thoroughly.
2) You need to examine his post(s) more closely.
He has zero tolerance for stupidity or ignorance due to laziness (i.e. not searching). I'm not trying to speak for him or defend him or anything else. He's grown and quite capable of handling all that. The man just knows the answer and gets to the damn point.
I wish we had more people around here like him.
