Phone wont boot [Goes directly into HBoot] - myTouch 4G Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

I woke up this morning and my phone will not boot. It automatically boots into the bootloader (hboot) and the up/down (volume keys) wont move the cursor to allow me to get to the recovery option. Also if I try to boot into recovery using the hard button combo it vibrates 3 times and the led turns to green, then it just sits/never gets to recovery. Since hboot is looking for the PDimg file I figure I could use this file to revert to stock but I was hoping someone here might have a better answer.
If not can someone let me know how to go about flashing with a PD15img file and where I can find a copy?
Thanks guys

Sounds like your volume button is stuck
Sent from my HTC Glacier using xda premium

Nope because it knows when I'm using them to try to go straight to recovery also the power button cannot be used to select either but it works to turn the phone one. They just stop working in hboot.

A constantly pressed button will of course also react when you're trying to boot directly to recovery. The phone doesn't "know" anything.
Another option is a stuck trackpad.

If all else fails you might try to reflash recovery and or Hboot, it never hurts to try from a clean install.

I think you guys are misunderstanding the point. This has nothing to do with the buttons. My issue is when I turn my phone on (by hitting the power button once) the phone will only boot into hboot. Once in hboot none of the keys (power or volume) work. If I try to boot directly into recovery by holding vol up/down + power; the phone will viberate 3 times and the LED lights up green. It then just sits on a blacklit black screen and does nothing else.
I am looking for eirther; Anyone that has ever had this issue and may be able to shed some light onto why it happened. Which by the way was completly random, I shut the phone off before going to sleep and woke up too it viberating like crazy then when I tried to turn it back on; this is what happened.
Or the answer to this question; How do I install a rom from hboot? Can I just install any rom as a "update" by using the method of naming it PD15IMG? Since it does search for this file when I have a sd card in at boot. But if my memory serves me correct it will ask; "Would you like to install this update?" and if my hard buttons do not work and I cannot click yes than what else can I do?
Thanks for all the help guys!!!!

And I think you can't read. You've been told in 3 posts that the phone boots directly to HBOOT because EITHER A VOLUME DOWN BUTTON OR A TRACKPAD BUTTON IS STUCK, ON ELECTRICAL LEVEL - THE CONTACTS ARE ALWAYS CLOSED. And THERE'S NOTHING YOU CAN DO ABOUT IT ON SOFTWARE/FLASHING LEVEL. You need to fix what's broken, and you've been told what's broken. Patience isn't one of my skills. Good luck from here.

I do thank you for your help but you may want to aquire some patience if you plan to continue helping people... since people in need of help are most likely confused.
Thanks though :highfive:

Im my experience Jack_R1's answers are always right and are the answer to your question. If you think otherwise one of two things is happening.
1) You did not explain your problem thoroughly.
2) You need to examine his post(s) more closely.
He has zero tolerance for stupidity or ignorance due to laziness (i.e. not searching). I'm not trying to speak for him or defend him or anything else. He's grown and quite capable of handling all that. The man just knows the answer and gets to the damn point.
I wish we had more people around here like him.

trackball stuck

so... this morning i noticed that trackball isn't functioning... i could move it in any direction and press it, but nothing happened... so i tried to reboot and now it keeps going into fastboot (as it's always pressed)
now, since i'm not anywhere near any of "supported" countries, sending it to back to htc is not an option... is there anything i can do to override going into fastboot and to boot it normally (i don't usually use trackball, i don't really care if it's working, i just want to boot)
can you select to boot normally from fastboot? or hboot
nope...i can't move selection while in fastboot... i'm pressing vol+- but nothing happens... probably because it thinks trackball is pressed all the time...
I had the same thing happen with my power button. I had to send the phone back to be repaired and it took almost two weeks.
I don't know if anything has been posted yet but I remember someone saying the N1 has the same trackball as one of the blackberries. Maybe there is a guide on swapping them or even just disassembling it to clean.
well... sending it back (from serbia to usa) is definitely not an option, partly because it would probably take at least month to get it back, partly because i don't want to risk having to pay duty&tax when it comes back.
disassembling, however, is an option, and i will do it if no one has better idea
thanks for replies anyway...

When you press it does it make the clicking noise? if it doesn't, replacing the trackball wont fix your issue. The trackball popple that registers the click when a short is made is depressed fully and is always making a short. you either have to rebend this popple or replace it entirely. You need something similar to this

yes it does... click, feedback... everything is exactly the same as it was...
btw... i'm at home now, so i connected it to usb and managed to boot with "fastboot reboot"... problem is that it boots into safe mode (i guess it does it if you hold trackball during whole boot process) so i cant open any 3rd party apps which makes it kinda unusable...
btw2... scrolling with trackball is working normally.. clicking does not
i guess ill take it apart and try to disconnect trackball completely..
any last thoughts before disassembling?
some witchcraft happened today, and my trackball is kinda working now, but phone keeps booting to safe mode...
taking battery out for 2 minutes, as some suggested, didn't help, and neither did holding trackball while booting... any other idea?
did you try factory reset?
yes... no luck...

New method for Vibrant Recovery mode

Hey!
First I have to say Thank You for all the contributions you have made to the forums. My girlfriend and I both just bought Vibrants 2 weeks ago, and being the techy I am, have been reading all sorts of stuff in the forums. I actually have been visiting the XDA forums since last year when I got my MyTouch 3G. I haven't posted anything, because usually by the time I have a question, I come to the forums and find an answers then in the moments of happiness, fail to say thank you to the community.
So it's time to start contributing.
I've been reading about the numerous processes on how to get into the Recovery mode for the Vibrant, and the possibility of the Hardware Locked phones.
After exhausting all options, I decided to call Tmo and see if they could help. Well long story short I went back to the store, and they gave me a new procedure (at least one that I have not seen on the forums so far) to test out. And it works!!
I've been doing it over and over for the last hour and each time I've been able to get into recovery mode.
Here it is...
Start with the phone ON and NOT plugged into the computer OR wall for charging.
1. Power down the phone as usual. Wait until the "Goodbye" disappears and then wait a few more seconds. DO NOT TOUCH ANYTHING DURING THIS TIME.
2. Press and hold Vol+,Vol-, & Power.
3. Wait for the Vibrant logo to appear.
4. Wait for the Vibrant logo to disappear.
5. Wait for the Vibrant logo to appear again.
6. Release ONLY Vol+, & Power, and continue to hold Vol -.
RECOVERY MODE!!!
Most of the process I have seen tell you to hold down and keep holding both Vol+ and Vol-, but I could never get it to work.
Please let me know if this works for you.
And I also want to say that I"m sorry if I have posted this in the wrong spot, or this procedure is some where that I haven't read yet. But I finally found something that worked and wanted to share.
Good Luck!
Reg.
Didn't work for me. Lemme try again.
EDIT: Works! Awesome. I never heard of this way to enter recovery, but it's good. +1.
But I don't have a hardware locked Vibrant so maybe it's different for me.
I get in every time with every VIbrant i have used.
Power off phone
Power on holding power, vol up and vol down
When the Samsung logo appears let go of power and continue to hold vol up and vol down.
Works everytime for me..... *Shrugs*

Granted. But this procedure does not work for all vibrants.
I think OP is saying this method would work with hardware locked phones, where the normal recovery mode method doesn't work.
I'm trying this on my hardware locked phone right now. Third time's a charm?
*Edit* Nothing, 10 times unlucky.
Tested on Hardware Locked Vibrant, doesn't work.
The Vibrant screen disappearing and coming back is nothing but the phone powering on and off, because you are holding down the power key.
I had already tried this in the T-Mo store (the CSR walked usthrough it on the phone - we tried it about 50 times, mind you), and I just tried it again about 30 seconds ago.
I wish these threads would stop.
If you get locked out of your phone, brick it, whatever, and it's hardware locked.
Just get a damn replacement.
You're not going to get into recovery or download mode on it.
Seriously.
You won't.
I've been waiting for a replacement for like 5 days now, and I've been basically living on this forum. I've tried everything there is to try. Making new threads is not going to do anything but frustrate more people, because none of these magic methods will allow them to get into recovery/download via the hardware keys on a boot-up.
Edit: Exception is if you root and can disable the lockout via adb, of course. Most consumers who find this site via Google will already have this issue, and will likely not be rooted with USB debugging enabled. The phone makes it way too easy to disabled USB debugging that even if it came enabled by default, most people who charge with a laptop will see the notification and click it ignorantly (ignorant of the benefits it can provide in the event of a catastrophe like mine).

I actually saw someone in a reply mention something like this, but nothing ever came of it. They were looking for boot.bin and another file, which I can't remember at the moment.
Do you have any other info regarding a method to do this?

I think this is the latest fad for trolls. Post some crazy key combination that is supposed to work for hardware locked phones, claim it "WORKS 100%"! Bottom line, don't get your hopes up, it didn't work for me either.

it will only help you look like a troll, because the hardware locked phones domt evem attempt to read those key states on boot. The only way to fix it is with a firmware update.
there is no magic method to gettimg these phones in dlm/recovery.
so stop making threads about it.
to the person above: if u have usb debugging on u can use adb to disengage the lock, but in that case why even have a lock. the main issue is the android bug not allowimg legit owners to unlock their owm phones using their own google cred en tials.
if tjat didn't exist we wouldnt have to worry about these patt er n lockout threads.
a legit owner who gets the phone replaced would never sell the locked phone, unless they wanma pay t-mo or asurion an extra $300+ USD

Well why did you click on the post, read it, then try the stated method? Did you have any hope? Or, were you looking forward to being frustrated? Really man? Really?
Bottom line: I don't think the OP promised any "magic" fix or claimed it would certainly help all Vibrant users. I took it as he/she was hopeful to be able to contribute something to the community believing it might help. I wish the posts where people are complaining about other people's posts (hardware locks, Froyo, etc.) would stop. Stop clicking.

[Q] Most Complicated Brick thus far. A cry for help..

I know I have Few or no posts at all... but I am quite experienced with Android OS... I wish i could have contributed more to this forum before asking for help on such an INTRICATE problem.. Anyways
The rundown is this, in the sequence in which the things occured... Today i set my phone down, (Droid X, Rooted, Running Apex 1.4.1) and it was working perfectly fine. I then pick it up, absolutely nothing had been done to it between me setting it down and picking it up, and the hard buttons (Menu, Home, Back, Search, Volume Rockers, Camera Button) all not working, only the lock button on top. So, I think like I always do, Battery pull time. I preform a pull, and turn the phone back on, then it's stuck on "M", just stays there. I pull again, stuck again, nothing, one more time and it goes to stock recovery mode just the Android and Exclamation triangle, (I have clockworkmod installed) but of course, no hardbuttons are working so it's false hope. I press buttons over and over out of frustration and I bring up the menu, but that's all i can do, and i have to hold the Volume rocker down, and search to even do that, but besides that i can do nothing more. So I'm stuck at what I see as a dead end, can't move through recovery because buttons aren't working for whatever reason, so i can't flash SBF, or stock reset... So I'm asking for help, please.

have you tried getting it into bootloader mode?
hold vol - + camera + search while powering the device on
if you can get into bootloader mode than you can flash an sbf file
If you tried everything you can think of and still can't get it to do anything take it back to verizon. If you can't get it to work I doubt most of the employees at verizon would be able to get it to work either
Did you try a long battery pull. 30 seconds or more?

Check SPL problems

Awesome guides! No doubt about that. I'm not a complete noob but I am new to the HD2 and I feel stupid bc I can't get past the first step I am frustrated cuz I have been looking all over for ways to check SPL my trio screen that everyone talks about is not coming up. Idk what to do. I've done the volume down with power button and also tried pressing the reset button in the back just to see if it works. I boot into Windows to make sure the volume down works and it does.
I have the tmobile version Leo 1024. Any suggestions.

Like everyone says. Volume down + end key.
Hold the volume down until the tri-color screen shows up.
I know you've said that.. just make sure you continue to hold volume down
Maybe that will help.
thank you guys but idk why it is not working but i finally managed to get it to bootloader by trying to install hspl3 it automatically sent me to the bootloader screen. After it said "we hacked it" i rebooted and tried to see if it would work with the typical hardware button
voldwn + power button and then let go and it still does not work.? :/
ps . i let go of power button but kept holding the voldwn and still did not work.

Yes and so I started following your guide to install clk since I know that I at least now have hspl3 installed and in the part where you task29 I followed instructions successfully flashed. Everything is going well until you say to reboot into boot loader mode by removing battery and voldwn + power. I try it hoping it would finally work and it doesn't.
Make story short my phone is stuck at the "stick together" screen. I tried getting into boot loader mode by running the hspl install program but bc is stuck on the screen comp is not able to recognize phone. Am I bricked?

Nice, real slick move,, you can't get into bootloader, yet you still decide to go ahead and wipe the OS, so now you have a non booting phone and no access to bootloader.
That's a handsome if totally useless lump of glass and plastic you have there!
JTAG, or sell for spares. (Well, after trying everything you can think of, but all I can think of is freezer trick, but its a loooooong shot. )

what is jtag and whats the freezer trick? is there any other way to get into bootloader mode maybe with sd?
Im willing to open the phone and remove or unplug a strip to completely erase any stored data and hope that it boots into bootloader?
SOLVED!! hope this helps someone else
i got it to work. My god there are soo many ppl with this phone soo many threads and post not sure if thats a good or bad thing lol anyways out of all the searching I found this guy to have had the same as me and he solved it. It was impossible for me to ever i mean EVER boot in to the trio color screen or bootloader what ever its called using the hardware buttons even tho the hardware buttons do work. I was able to get into bootloader when comp and phone sync and I used the hspl3 program to boot the phone when it was fully on the win mo stock.
Anyways I just followed this :
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=10644926&postcount=4
I opened up my hd2 (unscrew and removed the back panel) and disconnected the connector flex rigid board (A board) of the hardware keypad from the mainboard….and pushed the battery in and pressed reset (sometime u need to plugin the usb cable to wall charged/pc to wake up the phone) and held volume down key and hopped for some miracle.
Viola saw the tricolor screen after eternity – since the back panel (not backcover) was open I help the battery to the pins and didn’t even move my fingers …run the stock rom installation and held the battery tight in place and waited to get the rom completed…the moment its 100% relaxed my fingers and reconnected the flexboard connector, re-assembled my phone and everything was back to normal.
I also used these pages for reference on parts:
http://www.ifixit.com/pdf/ifixit/guide_5919_en.pdf
http://pocketnow.com/hardware-1/official-htc-hd2-disassembly-assembly-training-videos-leaked
ps. no need to take the whole phone apart. I believe you are disconecting the AP FPC from main board which is connected to your hardware buttons if I am correct.
Edit: I want to give credit to kylew1212 for walking me through the rest of the installation of my android.
Interesting, good job.
i have a lot of sympathy for his viewson peace

Bootloop help

Hello, first off I will say I am a total novice when it comes to messing with my phone as my upgrade is in a month so I took the plunge and all was well at first. I used SuperOneClick to root my Flipside which runs Froyo 2.2.2. I deleted the bloatware as that was my main goal. This all took place about 2 weeks ago, and no problems existed.
Yesterday when I was reading a simple text message my flipside automatically reset itself and became lodged at the Motorola M logo. I've had this issue in the past before rooting so I just removed the battery in hopes all would work well as before, sadly that wasn't the case. My phone then booted up and only the backlight appeared on the screen causing it to become stuck in the infinite bootloop. I've tried all the different hard resets with the x button and power button, the volume down button, etc. None of them work as only the backlight comes up on my screen so I can't see anything. Is there any way to unroot it or flash it back to stock?
If any of my terminology seems out of place then sorry, I honestly have not a slightest idea what to do nor what is occurring other than the bootloop.
Any help is appreciated and can you please dumb down the answer for me if possible. Thanks!

I've had a similar problem as you with my flipside. Are you sure you're using the right key combination to get into rsd mode? If you can at the very least get it into bootloader mode by holding down the volume + key while holding the power button, I'm sure you can get it into rsd mode.

Okay well I believe I found the thread you were talking about. It mentioned holding the up arrow on the keyboard combined with the power button for 4 seconds. Still nothing. I've tried the x button and power button, the volume up and power button. The thing is my screen won't work period. Nothing shows up but the backlight. So maybe I can or did get it to rsd or bootloader mode, but I can't really tell. I feel like something isn't right here. So I still can't connect it to my pc to use rsd lite.

Did you by any chance have the stock launcher app frozen and using a different launcher? Just seems if you are seeing the backlight that possibly it is on the home screen but the launcher is corrupt? Not sure.
I'm not entirely sure. I assume it's stuck in the bootloop because when I power it on the backlight changes shades and then vibrates to signal the screen past the motorola M. Then I can touch the screen and feel a vibration to simulate to slide to unlock and if my usb cable is attached my computer makes the noise to signal it sees my device, but moments later my computer dings to signal device disconnected and my phone goes through the above process again.
I feel as if I can get to the factory reset screen and such because if I time it right I can stop it from doing anything mentioned above and it just hangs as if in a menu of some sort. The downfall is I see nothing and the backlight only appears.
I may just have to scrap it and say well done phone. I can't seem to find a similar issue anywhere on the internet. All the other issues can make the bootloader screen appear and that appears to be my number on problem.
I guess I was just being a complete idiot and thought I had removed my SD card when I didn't. Well now it can connect to my pc so I can flash it. I hope all goes well. I flash it then it should be back to factory settings right?

Yes like straight out the box. The backlight issue just seems to me like a launcher problem but that wouldn't explain why you can't get into bootloader mode. Hmmm strange. Here is another way I just thought of. If it connects to the computer (you said you hear the beep) reflash it via Motorola's site. All the instructions should be there (if they still support it)
Well I was able to flash it using RSD Lite. I could hear the start up tone and such (progress), but unfortunately my screen still won't show anything. I'm assuming the worst and maybe say hardware failure as to why the screen won't boot up? It randomly disappeared when it first went into bootloop and has never come back so that is why I assumed no working screen was a software issue.

Yup that sounds like hardware failure. Haven't ever heard of the screen going out on the flipside but the atrix forums are full of them. Maybe you can get your upgrade early. Good luck
