64GB Card - Removed Unexpectedly - Galaxy S 4 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hi There!
I took my Sandisk 64GB Card out of my S3 and put it in my S4, and it's not happy. I took it out and formatted it ExFat in Windows and then copied the data back, pretty much does the same thing. Is there a straight forward way to determine if it's buggered?

There's been at least one other report of this happening here, and I'm seeing it too. There are some defective Sandisk cards out there, but it's infrequent enough that I can't reproduce the problem on demand. I'm just getting the card replaced to see if the problem goes away, if not the S4 will have to be replaced.

I've been having an issue with mine it tells me my sd card is damaged.
It has given me the messaged 3 times in the last 2 days mounting it again in settings or restarting phone solves it.
It's a SanDisk ultra 64gb u1 was in my note 2 before not never had an issue with it.

Hi,
I've had the same proble with my 32GB card.formatted properly, started to use in my S4 and couple of days later the card stopped working
It's definately got damaged somehow.I had to throw it away,as I wasn't able to formatting again.
soo it's dead
neither the computer nor the phone not recognized anymore.
I've purchased it from amazon uk,tried to contact them but they replied and said the card is now out of warranty

Worrying close to a pattern, ISTR a similar Samsung/SanDisk incompatibility a few years back, anyone having problems with any card other than SanDisk?
Edit: I'm running a test with today's firmware update to see if it's something that's been addressed in that.

Please report back as soon as you have some info, I used my SD card for all my music and it's a pain when it gets corrupted every time I want to listen to music

Reformat it to Fat32 and see if that works.
Sent from Spaceball One.

I have same problem with SanDisk microSDXC 64GB Class 10 UHS-I Ultra Android formated on FAT32.
Now I am using the oldes one Sandisk 64GB, from my SG3 and i looks good. Will see, if the newes card will work in SG3

Well, thus far it's been playing MP3s for five hours from the same card that yesterday caused the player to stop when the "removed..." dialogue popped up. So it doesn't seem to have occurred yet with today's revised firmware. Not knowing exactly what Samsung have done in the new firmware, it's hard to say definitively that the problem's resolved, but I'm cautiously optimistic.

A less scrupulous person might say, buy the exact same card from Amazon, put the new one in your phone, and return the defective card to Amazon on the new order, asking for a refund for a dead-on-arrival card. Hypothetically.

Same isssue here: Sandisk Ultra 64gb, Samsung s4 (I9505) after a while I started receiving message about Damaged SD. Solved Switching off. After 4 days the SD is death ...

I've been playing music and video off the card continuously for seven hours without the problem recurring, so the new firmware may have resolved this. Edit: Nuts, another unmount, problem not solved.

Strange as I've been using a SanDisk ultra 64gb card since Tuesday for photos and music and not had a single issue with it.

I had the same issue with the s3. We had 3 s3's in our household and 2 of them killed 3 32gb SanDisk cards between them. The one s3 that didn't kill cards was fine with a 32gb card for a year so to test a theory, I took out the card and tried it in one of the "card killer" ones... It was dead within 2 days. Strangely though, they worked fine with 16gb cards. I reached the conclusion that it was to do with the higher speed (class) of the 32gb cards.
All in all it seemed to be a phone fault and not a card fault. I always test my cards with h2testw, never buy cheap and all have appeared to be genuine. This is an alarmingly common issue too (just Google it!) but Samsung won't admit any fault. It's not exclusive to SanDisk cards either. I was hoping to find that this issue had been addressed and fixed in the s4 (whether samsung admit fault or not).
Seeing these same issues surfacing on the s4 within days of launch, I decided to leave samsung after having an s, s2 and 3 s3's over the last few years. I can't afford to keep replacing sd cards and keeping my fingers crossed. I wish you all good luck in convincing samsung that they have a serious fault on their devices... We got nowhere with the s3.

How is the speed of this card type (UHS-1)? I don't know if S4 has the HW to use at full speed these type of cards.
Thank you.

SanDisk faults!

SanDisk have a fault in some of there 32gb and 64 gb micro sd cards.
The fault seems to affect only the S2, S3 and our Note 2.
My phone just could not see the external card, and when it could it wanted to format the card.
I emailed sandisk support, and a new one is in the post.
More info here:

Hope it stops a few of you throwing you card in the bin, remember the card has a 5 year warranty, or lifetime warranty.
Hope it helps.

Yup my 32gb ultra took a dump a week ago woke my phone up and I see ready to format card in the notifications going on by itself. Deleted everything. Then would not read it at all. Could not mount it on my laptop either. Sandisk was good about it they sent me a prepaid label amd shipped me a new one. Now I dont keep any pics on there just music. And with isyncer I upload all my pics when I sync. Bought mine from amazon by the way.
I was lucky, they just asked me to send them a picture of it broken in half. And they sent me a new one, with then fault corrected.
Had an issue with my 32GB card too. Sent it back to MyMemory guys and they have sent a new card out to me today.

I've got my 64gb card returned to sandisk and I'm waiting for a replacement. While I've been waiting I got a 32gb sandisk ultra and didn't reformat to fat 32 as so many people have suggested. I just left it as it is and it's been ok for the last 3 weeks, but I should add that my 64gb card was ok for several months before it crapped out.

Mine crapped out last night, is it the heat thats causing the problem? Coz my phone seems to be heating quite a bit lately on HSPA+. I got the notification of scanning the card every time I woke up my phone, and late last night I got a Format the card issue. I was sleepy so I didn't bother. Today morning while I was leaving for my jog, I tried playing some music when it just died. I will be calling them soon to ask about it. My luck that I transferred my photos out just a couple of days back. But I might have lost some of my music.

I have a Samsung microsdhc plus 16gb. No problems so far.
I've been using a SanDisk 32Gb ultra class 10 for about 6 months, originally with my galaxy s3. In March, my S3 kept trying to repair the card, wouldn't read the information. Even when it finished repairing it will unmount. After restarting the phone, same thing.. Repair and unmount. Brought it to my laptop and it could barely read the information on the drive.
All My info was there but it took forever to load anything. I format the card on my Pc and it's been working ever since. Everything is backed up, so it wasn't that big of deal. Though I did lose some pictures from that day due to my sync schedule.
Using the same card now in my s4. No problems yet.
Edit* I have antivirus on my phone and computer.. Scan showed up clean on both. So I have to assume either just a bad/corrupt file or the sdcard itself had an issue. But I did find others having issues regarding the same card I have, but I read mostly 'fried' or dead cards. Mine didn't die.

Note 2 killed my Lexar 32gb Card AGAIN!

I've read loads of internet threads and other reports about Samsung phones (GS3, Note 2 etc) killing SD Cards from various manufacturers, so when my Lexar 32GB card (that I had used previously in my Note 1 since I bought it!) died unexpectedly I thought maybe it was the card.
Luckily Lexar are guaranteed for 10 years so I sent it back and they sent me a brand new one in return. But....
JUST THREE WEEKS LATER my Note 2 reported, after a reset, that the card was damaged and needed formatting - losing all the data on it AGAIN!
I can't see two cards both being faulty to be honest - it MUST be my Note 2 suddenly killing them. There seems to be no answer from Samsung about this - they just keep quiet. So I thought I'd post this and also a poll here to see how many cards have been killed/data lost by the Note 2 on XDA.
Sandisk. 'Nuff said.
Haven't tried a Samsung card but seem to get great reviews mostly. I haven't had a lexar fail me yet but on the other hand haven't used one enough to really push it. Tried lexar because they're usually the fastest or close to it.

I have been using lots of MMC/SD/microSD cards since they came out and I got several from various makes and price brackets (top-end Sandisk and Kingston included) failing on me over the years. Since I got my OG Note, almost 2.5 years ago, I have been using high-end microSD cards from Samsung only, class 10 32GB ones at first and then UHS-1 64GB ones since I got my Note II 6-7 months ago. I have yet to have a problem with them.
I have read that certain Sandisk cards had a manufacturing problem (admitted by them) which got them failing on some devices like the Note II, you may search for it.
Anyway, the only smartphone that I would buy (again) *today* is the Note II and the only microSDs that I buy today are Samsung's top-end ones.
I don't think your note killed anything, simply the card died - it probably would have died in any device; or maybe not if the device that is not i.e. heating as much as note etc. But I really can't believe there's an error in note that kills cards.
I.e. my 32gb died in my GPS, what should I have said "my Mio killed SD card!"? No, the card simply died, end of story. They manufacture them in such quantities that it's normal.... Remember when the CD-Rs first appeared? I still have some like 10-15 years old and they work just fine. Nowdays I burn a DVD and in a week I try to read it and it is unreadable! And I'm not using some crap brand. So I wouldn't blame your Note Simply mass production....

hello Londres guy, I hope you can understand my french.
So, my Note 2 have killed once my sd card, and I found something intéressant, that day I have download a pic of dogs from reddit, but I did't finish that, It was cancel by myself,
BUT I found the server was still working, the server which made from download, so my phone has been hot, and the batterie has gone very rapide, and the day after, my sd card is dead.
I took a look the server which is named multimédias have took 60% my batterie, it si why my note2 is hot, and i think is him, who writes alway in the sd card For a day and half, who make the sd dead fastly.
So maybe it is reason for the Sudden Death too, I mean if this server writes in the eMMC without stop, he can make the eMMC dead.
---------- Post added at 10:44 AM ---------- Previous post was at 10:40 AM ----------
for now I use my note2 very careful, I take a look the tasks, or the page de la batterie, if the server be here, I must make this server to default, and if i will download something, make sure it in the sd card, i dont want my emmc be broken.
I dont think the phone is responsible for killing sd. Might be a specific sd card problem.
Im Using a 32gb Samsung class 10, they are not very expensive in amazon. I used to have Sandisk cards with no problems.

I also lost a SanDisk Class 4 32 GB card in my Note II, but it's interesting that I can still use the card as a USB memory through an adapter. Meaning, Windows recognises it without a problem as soon as I stick the memory in and check disk doesn't show any errors or bad sectors. On the other hand, no phone is able to recognise the memory anymore, no matter the phone manufacturer.
I did not want to risk again so I bought a 64GB Samsung UHS-1 card, factory exFAT formated. No problems so far, I've been using it for couple of months now. The only thing I noticed is that the write / read speeds are far below the specified ones, although these cards should be very fast.

Did you try to repair the file system via CheckDisk utility?
File system gets corrupted if there is some error writing or power loss during file operations, or you disconnect the card.
Usually all the data is there, only the partition table gets corrupted.
Go to command prompt and type:
chkdsk /X /F <SD card drive letter on your system:>
my device has killed 3 (yes three!) 64gb class10 sandisk cards 2 got replaced and the third one.. i m still trying to make it work. Last measure, i did was formatted the factory formatted empty card with a prog called sdcardformatter and reformatted same in twrp recovery. For somedays its working but still getting 2-3 sdremoval error messages
now i will try mrlo suggested chdsk method

It does - look into the Accessories subforum and see that there is a very, very long thread about the 128GB Sandisk microSD, and towards March 2014 you will see a number of people that finally got their 128GB microSD and posted results and impressions.
Superb cheers

I'm not sure if this applies to 128GB Sandisk cards, but I've read reports on Sandisk's forum, numerous Googled sites and have been told at several computer stalls in Hong Kong (where I live) of 64GB cards failing on 'some Samsung devices', most notably S4 and Note 3. I have a Note 3 and, until recently, a 64GB Sandisk Ultra UHS I [1]. After the KitKat update it stopped writing, deleting, it wouldn't even format. My storage was 'frozen'. I've since contacted Sandisk and while waiting for the replacement I've purchased a Samsung 64GB as I don't trust Sandisk right now :highfive:

Well done, you did your homework. But talk about a knee-jerk reaction
Ok, let me clarify something here.
My phone is rooted. That's why I'm here at XDA. I've also fixed the RW permissions for external storage in platform.xml, which would've allowed me to continue using my card pre-KitKat. Note also that I'd tried other SD cards and they worked fine.
On my Sandisk I could not write, delete or format my SD card. What you mentioned only pertains to applications writing to the external storage.
I'd tried through my phone and PC, to no avail. Had I failed to provide enough analysis, don't you think Sandisk would've questioned me on this before agreeing to send me a replacement? Think, man!
They also queried what Samsung I was using, what kernel and build.
What would that have to do with anything? It's a hardware fault, but they were keen to know anyway.
See attached a screenshot of my nuked card, for your information. Consider what your next post on XDA will be, unless you wish to alienate yourself from more people who are only trying to help.
EDIT: In case you're wondering, no the card didn't split into two by some nano-nuclear explosion, I cut the card purposely at Sandisk's request in order to receive the new one.

That is not an issue with your card. That is a "feature" of KitKat. They disabled the ability to write to it.
Requires root to fix for now.

Apps that are updated can still write and read from their own folder on a sdcard

An update to the thread. My 16GB Sandisk SD card failed just few days ago. It was working perfectly on Note 2 for 12 months , until I moved it Note 3 6 months ago. Soon after an update to 4.4.2, the card simply stopped working. No formatting ( on phone or PC) has made any difference.
I've stopped using SD card now.
BTW, Is Android slowly becoming the half-eaten fruit? Restrictions, locked-down ROMS, no SD card?? I might just bite the bullet to become an I-Muppet!.

This does in some part support the information I received about SanDisk cards failing on some particular Samsung devices. I have since given my 64gb SanDisk replacement to my sister for her S3, so far no issues. I now use Samsung 64gb.
If you want to talk about half-eaten fruit, look no further than Apple!

Really goes to show how much you know about everything....I've already had 3 of the damn things fail exactly as he described from ScamDicks! Purchased a Samsung 64GB MicroSD, absolutely no fails or issues when switching between devices! Stop hating on people because you don't know what you're talking about.

S5 and SanDisk 64GB UHS-1 problems w/ camera

The first few photos went to the SD card then I get error messages saying...
http : // i807.photobucket.com/albums/yy360/sell90254/IMG_9360_zpse1bc05a4.jpg << this is the image but I'm too new to post pics.
"Unable to save file to SD card. Default storage has been changed to device memory."
So, I Googled around it it seems that this problem has popped up before but I haven't yet found a resolution.
I have the latest SanDisk 64GB UHS-1 microSD card. I thought that the problem last night was because I corrupted it by writing to it from my Windows 8 PC but I've since reformatted it with the fat32format.exe utility so that should be good.
Any advice?
I keep switching it back to the SD card but it worked for only a few hours.
My first Android device...
Maybe it's OK? Maybe my answer will help other NOOBs (like me)?
It seems that it depends on which shooting method that you use. And, I knew that because I read the entire manual while patiently waiting for what seemed like FOR-EVER for this thing to come out.
Anyway, I wasn't in one of the special "shot & more" modes so I thought it would be good but 'burst' somehow got checked and that was the problem.
:silly:
did you try formatting it?
it should work...i think its either a formatting issue or a problem with your card
Have you tried to format card in phone - be worried because I ordered the same card

YES. I did reformat the phone but learned a lot more about this.
--- THIS IS NOW A USEFUL POST ---
The problem is the version of this memory card and the exact part # and mislabeled packaging (can't post pics and URLs because I'm still too much of a NOOB to be allowed).
Here's what I wrote to the guy that I bought this from and he agreed to accept my return.
"I am so sorry to do this but the part # that you sent is different from the one you advertised and it therefore doesn't work in my Samsung Galaxy S5.
#1. The ad that I purchased from clearly said that I was buying a SDSDQUA-064G-A11A (Class 10 / UHS-1) but I instead received a SDSDQY-064G-U46A which is actually a class 6.
Regardless it is a different part #.
#2. This is documented on the SanDisk forum.
Question: Is "SDSDQY-064G-U46A" the same as "SDSDQUA-064G-A11A"?
From http://forums.sandisk.com/t5/Mobile...he-same-as-quot-SDSDQUA-064G-A11A/td-p/273971
Answer: SDSDQUA-064G-A11A is a class 10 UHS-I card in US packaging that has the android logo on it. SDSDQY-064G-U46A is a class 6 card in EU packaging #
3. I tried to use it because 64GB is 64GB but the phone requires a certain memory speed in order to support the camera and it automatically switches photos to the internal memory because the memory isn't class 10.
#4. I ran benchmark testing on my phone and confirmed the speed. The package is opened because I did try to use it but I've got all the material. Please let me know where I can send it back in order to receive a full refund."

Google for "SDSDQY-064G-U46A SDSDQUA-064G-A11A" and you will find other articles.
My solution was to buy the 'Extreme version", I know it's 2x the price but not being able to take certain types of photos or videos on my SD card is unacceptable.
Specifically...
SanDisk 64GB 64G Extreme micro SD microSDXC Card 45MB/s 300X UHS-I Class 10 +smal multifunction Case
I have seen this same complaint on forums at Amazon, eBay and NewEgg. All supplied the much slower card which I can confirm does not work in the S5.
PS Here's a picture of what I bought that says Class 10 / UHS-1 but isn't really...
Just make sure the part # ends in A11A because the one ending in U46A won't work properly in your phone.
I have the extreme plus version and it works great

Thanks.
I was pretty sure but that's EXACTLY what I wanted to know myself. I bought "extreme" and not "extreme plus" -- seems that there is a 2x difference here in speed. Hopefully the 'extreme is enough'. The lesser version of the "Ultra" (U46A) clearly is not.
I bought this one from http://www.rakuten.com/prod/sandisk-extreme-64gb-microsdhc-uhs-i-class-10-memory-card/256138497.html
and not this one from www.rakuten.com/prod/sandisk-extreme-plus-64-gb-microsdhc-class-10-uhs-i-memory-card-with/263090059.html
Some part #'s:
Extreme = SDSDQXL-064G-A46A
Extreme Plus = HK092 ???
Seems like most sites don't always list the full part # (example above) and many others list one but sell a different one like when I ordered the non-extreme version.

I have a class 4 16GB card in my S5 right now and have no issues with burst (obviously, because the phone clearly says burst writes to phone storage), 4K video, etc. I suspect your card was defective.
Will this work ok?

Im using the samsung evo 64gb micro sd card and so far no problems. Its been in the phone from day of release so maybe have a look at purchasing this card.

I've had a similar problem, it started in my S4 with the 64gb SanDisk but I thought that the camera had gone faulty! Upgraded this week to S5 and put the sd card in it and all the pictures I took were OK for a minute then went corrupt? Also noticed that I couldn't put apps on the sd so process of elimination brought me to the card. Turns out it had gone faulty but had a second one in my gopro so put it in the phone and all is working perfectly but the other card is dead and can't even format it. Not sure if this helps or similar to your experience but thought I'd share

I tried the Ultra and not Ultra-Plus. The Ultra worked for most things for me but not high speed cam/camera functions.
If you tried it please let me know.
From this point on I buy the Extreme Plus and never looked back.
