S5 and SanDisk 64GB UHS-1 problems w/ camera - Galaxy S 5 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

The first few photos went to the SD card then I get error messages saying...
http : // i807.photobucket.com/albums/yy360/sell90254/IMG_9360_zpse1bc05a4.jpg << this is the image but I'm too new to post pics.
"Unable to save file to SD card. Default storage has been changed to device memory."
So, I Googled around it it seems that this problem has popped up before but I haven't yet found a resolution.
I have the latest SanDisk 64GB UHS-1 microSD card. I thought that the problem last night was because I corrupted it by writing to it from my Windows 8 PC but I've since reformatted it with the fat32format.exe utility so that should be good.
Any advice?
I keep switching it back to the SD card but it worked for only a few hours.

My first Android device...
Maybe it's OK? Maybe my answer will help other NOOBs (like me)?
It seems that it depends on which shooting method that you use. And, I knew that because I read the entire manual while patiently waiting for what seemed like FOR-EVER for this thing to come out.
Anyway, I wasn't in one of the special "shot & more" modes so I thought it would be good but 'burst' somehow got checked and that was the problem.
:silly:

did you try formatting it?
it should work...i think its either a formatting issue or a problem with your card

Have you tried to format card in phone - be worried because I ordered the same card

YES. I did reformat the phone but learned a lot more about this.
--- THIS IS NOW A USEFUL POST ---
The problem is the version of this memory card and the exact part # and mislabeled packaging (can't post pics and URLs because I'm still too much of a NOOB to be allowed).
Here's what I wrote to the guy that I bought this from and he agreed to accept my return.
"I am so sorry to do this but the part # that you sent is different from the one you advertised and it therefore doesn't work in my Samsung Galaxy S5.
#1. The ad that I purchased from clearly said that I was buying a SDSDQUA-064G-A11A (Class 10 / UHS-1) but I instead received a SDSDQY-064G-U46A which is actually a class 6.
Regardless it is a different part #.
#2. This is documented on the SanDisk forum.
Question: Is "SDSDQY-064G-U46A" the same as "SDSDQUA-064G-A11A"?
From http://forums.sandisk.com/t5/Mobile...he-same-as-quot-SDSDQUA-064G-A11A/td-p/273971
Answer: SDSDQUA-064G-A11A is a class 10 UHS-I card in US packaging that has the android logo on it. SDSDQY-064G-U46A is a class 6 card in EU packaging #
3. I tried to use it because 64GB is 64GB but the phone requires a certain memory speed in order to support the camera and it automatically switches photos to the internal memory because the memory isn't class 10.
#4. I ran benchmark testing on my phone and confirmed the speed. The package is opened because I did try to use it but I've got all the material. Please let me know where I can send it back in order to receive a full refund."

Google for "SDSDQY-064G-U46A SDSDQUA-064G-A11A" and you will find other articles.
My solution was to buy the 'Extreme version", I know it's 2x the price but not being able to take certain types of photos or videos on my SD card is unacceptable.
Specifically...
SanDisk 64GB 64G Extreme micro SD microSDXC Card 45MB/s 300X UHS-I Class 10 +smal multifunction Case
I have seen this same complaint on forums at Amazon, eBay and NewEgg. All supplied the much slower card which I can confirm does not work in the S5.
PS Here's a picture of what I bought that says Class 10 / UHS-1 but isn't really...
Just make sure the part # ends in A11A because the one ending in U46A won't work properly in your phone.

I have the extreme plus version and it works great

Thanks.
I was pretty sure but that's EXACTLY what I wanted to know myself. I bought "extreme" and not "extreme plus" -- seems that there is a 2x difference here in speed. Hopefully the 'extreme is enough'. The lesser version of the "Ultra" (U46A) clearly is not.
I bought this one from http://www.rakuten.com/prod/sandisk-extreme-64gb-microsdhc-uhs-i-class-10-memory-card/256138497.html
and not this one from www.rakuten.com/prod/sandisk-extreme-plus-64-gb-microsdhc-class-10-uhs-i-memory-card-with/263090059.html
Some part #'s:
Extreme = SDSDQXL-064G-A46A
Extreme Plus = HK092 ???
Seems like most sites don't always list the full part # (example above) and many others list one but sell a different one like when I ordered the non-extreme version.

I have a class 4 16GB card in my S5 right now and have no issues with burst (obviously, because the phone clearly says burst writes to phone storage), 4K video, etc. I suspect your card was defective.

Will this work ok?

I've had a similar problem, it started in my S4 with the 64gb SanDisk but I thought that the camera had gone faulty! Upgraded this week to S5 and put the sd card in it and all the pictures I took were OK for a minute then went corrupt? Also noticed that I couldn't put apps on the sd so process of elimination brought me to the card. Turns out it had gone faulty but had a second one in my gopro so put it in the phone and all is working perfectly but the other card is dead and can't even format it. Not sure if this helps or similar to your experience but thought I'd share

I tried the Ultra and not Ultra-Plus. The Ultra worked for most things for me but not high speed cam/camera functions.
If you tried it please let me know.
From this point on I buy the Extreme Plus and never looked back.

32gb Micro SDHC woes

Hi all,
Apologies for the rambling post below but....
I would like to report major problems I have experienced with 32gb Micro SD cards with a number of Android devices, and most recently my new Desire HD.
The problems occur when I copy across my music library to the 32gb SD. It is a mixture of MP3 and AAC (mp4) files and the initial amount of data is a minimum of 5gb. All the data copies across fine, as I can tell from the available space under settings/SD & phone storage. However, the stock music player app does not recognise roughly half the music, and some of the music it has recognised produces a "cannot play this file format" message if i try and listen to it.
Using Astro File Manager, I then browse to the location on the SD card where I have copied the music and find that the music (that was not recognised) , is not physically on the SD card (despite the available space remaining suggesting the files are there).
If I then copy new music to the Desire HD on the SD card, the music copies over but the same scenario above occurs.
If I keep the SD card in the phone for 24 hrs the phone will crash numerous times and the only way I can turn the phone back on is to remove the battery.
I have tested 4 different 32gb Micro SDHC cards, 2 Class 4 SanDisks and 2 Class 6 Kingstons, same results with both.
Phone-wise, I have tested this on an HTC Wildfire and Samsung Galaxy S (running Android 2.1) and an HTC Desire and HTC Desire HD (running 2.2). I will test on a Samsung Galaxy Tab tonight.
Also, I have tested the above after formatting the SD card in the devices themselves, and from formatting the SD card from Windows 7 using FAT32 and 32kilobytes as the allocation unit size.
Has anyone else experiences issues with 32gb Micro SDHC cards? FYI, the stock 8gb Samsung SD card that comes with the Desire HD works without any issues whatsoever.
regards
Michael
I'm so glad you've posted these findings, I was contemplating buying a 32GB microsd card but could not justify paying more than twice the amount it costs for a 16GB card. I think I'm going to settle with a 16GB card now.
EDIT:-
Just thought about something, where are you doing this from, Windows 7 ? There is a Microsoft Windows update that fixes a problem with Windows 7 not reading 32GB or higher memory cards properly.

Very interesting and useful info for who tend to use 32GB microsd with DHD.
Is there anyone using 32 GB without any problem? We need to find out if DHD has a common problem with 32 GB or not.

I have one I got last week thats working perfect! 32GB class 4 from mymemory.co.uk (their own card, no manufacturer name).
I've copied a bunch of music and some HDTV episodes onto it so it's almost full, all files are definitely there and I've had no issues with playback. Using Astro too.
Copied them over on a Windows 7 system with Android Manager WiFi, I've used the regular USB cable once or twice which works fine too.
I also have a 32gig card.
Initially I had similar problems to you bit sure what fixed it, HTC sync works and I did reboot one or twice, but its all working

No issues with my Integral 32GB Class 4 card.
Try formatting with 32k cluster size...I've read that it helps with stuttering video issue, maybe it also helps with this...
Then nice to know it's a spesific problem not common. Thanks for the feedbacks guys.
I'm having exactly same problems as post 1. Someone suggested it might be a fake 32GB card so I'm currently running h2testw on it to see.

That was the case with my 32GB one. h2testw reported only the first 1.8GB usable.
I suspect these are factory rejects being snatched before being destroyed/recycled.
I've been using a Kingston Class 4 32Gb card for 2-3 months now with absolutely no problems. Almost full of music and Sat Nav maps, and not even a hint of problems. Make sure you buy from a reputable, or at least traceable, supplier!
Sounds like the card is faulty or fake, ALWAYS test with H2TESTW and format it with Panasonic's SD Formatter app BEFORE using it with any device! Too many dodgey cards out there!

Mind if I ask where the hell did you find 32GB class 6 Kingston or other cards.
I can't find anything higher than class 4. Also on their official page there aren't any 32gb microSDHC class 6+.
Ho everybody this is the answer. I have bought over 10 32gb micro SD cards from eBay and amazon.
Some would not even format. Dome would format but while trying to transfer the files half way through the card would fail and would not be able to format or only see the card as 8gb.
Some would format and transfer would be good but by the time I would check for the data on the card the data would have disappeared.
Let me make one thing clear ALL THESE CARDS WERE CHEAP NOCK OFFS AND CHEAP QUALITY FROM CHINA.
I payed from £25 to £80 from eBay and amazon and they all failed.
I bought ONE FROM SCAN.CO.UK and it worked first time and still works with no issues thank God.
IT IS NOT THE DHD IT IS THE CARDS.
The reason they all failed and why its so hard to believe is because not everyone that buys the cards would transfer so much data at the beginning which is why the card failed, the huge amount of data being transferred showed the true defects in the card.
I really hope this helped.
Kind regards
Imran

thanks guys for this discussion it really helped me as i was planing on buying one such card from ebay now would prefer a more reliable vendor and would read more reviews.
I've had a Lexar class 10 32GB I got from Amazon for £70 - works really well. Took a bit longer to 'prepare' when I first put it in, but no problems since.

Ordered my Focus!!! - Micro SDHC Question

I ordered the Samsung Focus with Amazon Wireless for one penny and a two year contract with AT&T! Couldn't be any happier with that.
Anyway, I ordered a case:
http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B00495YF8A/ref=oss_product
And a screen protector (I know it's tough to scratch but eh, why not. Lol)
http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B003F8C1GK/ref=oss_product
So I've been thinking about how much memory is on the phone. 8GB is nice but I will want to put a few of my 720P movies onto the Focus. I figured I could get 8B Micro SDHC (Class 10) and it would make it, 16GB. That's pretty decent, right? I think it will hold me over... Lol.
I did some research and I get the higher the class, the higher the write speeds. Right?
Well, what do ya'll think of this one?

Thanks in advance everyone!!!
8gb is good enough for me....for now! Ill be buying a 16gb card soon enough tho because everytime you change the sd card you have to do a full reset on your phone, so id rather just do it now and get it all over with. So, what im trying to tell you is just get yourself a 16gb card if you going to be adding 720p movies...that way you wont really need to worry about changing the card later. As for the class...class 10 is unnecessary....class 2 has been proven to be VERY sufficient in the focus...even class 4. I had a class 6 and now I have a class 2 and there is NO difference in performance on my focus. Anyways, as for sd cards, be careful because some aren't working properly....I would say your safest bet is buying Sandisk...since thats what Samsung is using in the focus for memory right now.
Hope this helps!

Well, if I put a 720P movie on there, I'll just delete it once I'm finished watching it. Not going to have more than a few gigs of music too. So 8GB is good for me. Obviously once you put a movie on there you can delete it and get your memory back, correct? Sounds nooby but just double checkin... Lol. The higher the class the faster it gets on the card, right?

i got a sandisk 16g class 4 from radio shack cost about $34, had it in since two weeks before christmas.... loaded it almost full, empted most of it out loaded and unloaded stuff, havn't had any problems so far....... been running strong and just as fast as without the card...

correct...once you delete things you get your space back. I didn't notice much difference in transfer speed between my class 6 and class 2. So if you can, just save yourself the money and get class 4. There was an article I read somewhere that a higher class can actually make performance worse on the phone. Don't know how true it is, but class 2 has been perfect for me. No difference anywhere.
You need too spend some time reading this thread before buying a microsd card:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=834144&page=3
Determining whether an SD card is Windows Phone 7 compliant is not a simple matter of judging its speed class. Several other factors, such as the number of random read/write operations per second, play a role in determining how well an SD card performs with Windows Phone 7 devices.

A higher speed class can actually work against you because sometimes the maker sacrifices random operations for speed.
You can either wait for official "windows phone 7 certified" cards or take your chances. Read the first post carefully, especially the most recent posts. I personally have been using a 16gb Samsung card with no problems. Caveat emptor.

If you read the feedback, nothing but positive reviews.
"Pros: Very good price to performance ratio. Works with the Samsung Focus. Good read write speeds.
Cons: None
Other Thoughts: Not sure why some say negatives about the speed of the card. Maybe they got a bad one, but this tested out at just under 4.5gb write speeds. I had been using a Sandisk class 2 card with my Samsung Focus, but it would do some random rebooting and crashing. With this card it has been absoulutly perfect for over a week of use. I have 15gb of music and photos on the phone so I know that I am using the memory card along with the 8gb that is onboard with the phone."
Kinda sold on this... Should I do it?!?!?!?! Buy it right now?!?!! lol
This is pretty much what I was asking in another thread. I want to go with a 32GB card as I don't want to go through hard reset if I ever need more memory later on.
What is a good 32GB tmicroSD card hat works with Focus with no issues? I would like name of manufacturer, class and even the part# so I can source locally (go to store or order online).
Thanks.
No lie, you're going to spend a lot of $ and 32GB is overkill.

After reading the large thread on compatible cards above, it seems the real test is if you've loaded over 8GB of data onto the SDHC card (or over 16GB total in your case) and don't experience any problems. If that's the case then that's awesome (and it also sadly verifies the fact that no one knows which brand of card really works than the Sandisk 8GB Class 2, which is mentioned in the official instruction manual).
To the OP, I've stuck with the 8GB Sandisk. I considered the OEM version for $12 USD available on Amazon but decided against it, and went with the retail packaged version, which I got at Radio Shack for $20 USD. 14 or so GB will be good enough until the official certified ones are announced.
well ill just refer to him as mr arse... but mr arse is partially correct.... mine was stable up to 15gb then after that it went downhill fast.... so give the dude a bit of a break....
Has anyone seen any OFFICIAL announcement that there will be APPROVED cards for WP7. I know that Sandisk tried to pull a fast one and say their's were approved but then pulled them. Is MS even allowing such a program?

Using 64 GB SD

Does anyone has trying to use a 64 SD in the note ? I had tried a Samsung without any luck. It can be read and also save some music and videos but after using 5 GB it start failing.
Yes
I use Samsung 64Gb MicroSD without any problem
I am using a SanDisk Extreme Plus 64gb MicroSD card in my Note Pro. Works great, no complaints.
No problems here either. Look like a bad card maybe. I would try it in a PC to see if you get the same results. If so then it's probably a bad card. There are counterfeit cards out there that also give the results you have.
I agree, a defective card. I'm using a 128 GB card bought from a chinese retailer for 30 € and no problem so far.
I use a 64gb microSD. The first one I tried only lasted a few weeks and then I started getting errors. I replaced the card and all was well for about 6 months. Then I started getting errors saying the card was corrupt whenever the battery would drop below 50% state of charge. I finally sent the tablet in for repair (under warranty). They told me there was a battery terminal connection that was broken and they also update "software". Not sure what that was since I was already on the latest update. The only thing I can figure is it was some form of firmware update. When I got it back it seemed to fine and I have not had a problem in the last few weeks since it was returned.

I recently had a Samsung sdxc evo class 10 fail (suddenly couldn't write anything despite having 80gb of free space left).

I have the same card from Samsung,( it was free with the Note 7). Unfortunately, I'm still having problems playing videos. I've tried VLC and MX, but both only play some of the files from SD. Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.
Definitely have to format. If you'll notice the card is assigned I don't know what to call it and filesystem may have been handled differently. I had to do same. Took time but works proper.

I believe you are right I just popped in a 8gb san disk I had brand new never used and phone doesn't ever register it. But as far as I know regardless of Sd card inserted ir not the phone should show external memory in the menu

That is correct. The phone should detect it regardless of the need to format or not.

I solved this by moving the SIM from the main slot to the side slot (dual SIM model). Weird thing was that anything < 64 gig would read fine, larger SD cards wouldn't. Only thing i can think of is a design flaw whereby the SD card is getting pushed up and not making contact properly due to the SIM underneath it. Try taking the SIM out and seeing if it will read/format/re-read it then?

I have an ATT LG V20 that experienced the same symptom so I tried similar procedure by remove SIM card and insert the micro SD then boot up to see if it would first see the SD card and it did, after that I shutdown and reinsert the SIM card and everything is still working.

S7 & S7E killing my SD Cards....GRR! Any ideas?

I don't know if it's something I'm doing, but this has happened twice now (both with an S7 and now my new S7E).
I bought my S7 with a SanDisk Extreme 64GB Micro SD. After a few months, I kept finding that on taking a photo, it was diverting to internal storage over the SD card. Rebooting sorted it for a while, but it reached a point where it locked itself and could only be read, but not written to. I sent it back to Sandisk and they issued a replacement.
Since then I've now got an S7E (I was part of the N7 scandal). I'm using the replacement Sandisk card I received and today EXACTLY the same thing has happened. The card has become completely locked. I can see the data that was on it from the S7E before it locked up, but I can't write to it. In fact, I can't even format it. If I put it in my PC I can read everything on it but otherwise it's bu**ered.
Where am I going wrong with my S7's and SD cards. Any ideas?
Cheers.
I had the same thing happen. My Sandisk 128gb got corrupted, sent it back for replacement to Sandisk. Then the replacement got effed. Then I bought a Samsung Evo 128gb and it got locked somehow. There are files on it that I can see with a PC, but when in a phone shows as corrupted. Cannot format, cannot do anything with it. I got another 128gb Samsung from Amazon and so far is working. I am worried it will do it again.
Can i ask which version of s7/edge you guys have ? I got the exynos model (n7 scandal as well) I popped in a 128 gb evo card, I'm worried it might do that to me :/

And me. What I've decided to do is just put music on it (i.e. read only)! That's what it's mostly for for me anyway.

Mine is also Exynos!
Well for me, it started when I had the AT&T 935A S7E with the SanDisk, but I now have the Exynos S7E and it is the one that the Samsung micro SD went bad on. So both models caused issues. I do flash custom roms and things and know the risks, but have never had this happen on any of my S2, S3, S4, S5, or S6 phones.
I got the same issue but I think its the card with the HC card I didnt have problems but with the XC card it got corrupted...
Try a different SDCard manufacturer to SanDisk?
Possible the replacement was from a faulty batch of cards the original was also from
Think I'm using Kingston
Did you read my post? It happened to me with a Samsung too.
Same issue here with Silicon power 64gb.
Might be the whole XC thing.... I have an old 32GB Samsung EVO knocking around. I'm gonna see if I can kill it haha! Otherwise I'm going to have to send the dead one back AGAIN.
I had te same issue on 3 SanDisk cards all SDXC, I concluded to stick with SDXC, got for the extreme versions.
I tried everything to recover or format.

For those with locked files on the SD, what did you when sending it back?
Probably connext ur micro sd card to the pc and done diagnostics and correct disk sectors.

Doesn't work. Already tried that.
There is a command you can use on dos that fixes read write or bad partition errors on sd cards . Check this link

Yes that's what's I've run already on my cards. I have tried everything I can find. I do work in the IT field though I'm not a programmer. The closest I've come to getting somewhere is using an application called testdisk. http://www.cgsecurity.org/wiki/TestDisk It will help you recover any files lost but that isn't my problem. The one thing I will say is I'm pretty sure all mine have been formatted as eXfat vs fat. I had one go bad when I was messing around with adoptable storage.

I also used to work in the IT field! I spent about 8 hours last time trying to repair the card the first time around - in the end I just sent it back to Sandisk. You need to request an RAM on their web site.
And yea, no CHKDSK /f, or DISKPART CLEAN will touch it. It's so odd how the phone can render a card useless - yet still be completely readable.
I have an sandisk extreme pro 64Gb sdxc since april. Only use it for photos and downloads, sometimes to listen to music. It still works flaweless *knocks on wood*
Have you guys formated the card in the phone? This cause some really bad performance for me, i formatted it with my pc and SDCardformatter and the performance is better now. But sadly not as good as out of the box. Maybe samsung screw something up while formatting with the phone?

When this happens, the card is locked. If I format the card in the phone it claims to have worked - yet nothing has actually been formatted. If I use SDCardformmatter (or Windows, or any of the 3rd party tools) they all fail. "This disk cannot be formatted"!
Yes I have put them in the phone, and my card says corrupted when in the phone, yet works fine (other than being write protected) in my PC. I did request an RMA on my first 128gb SanDisk, then it happened to the replacement, then it happened to the Samsung 128gb, and I am on my 4th 128GB which is a Samsung EVO Select. I thought it might have had something to do with not doing the full wipe of data in TWRP recovery before switching roms. It does say doing full wipe removes encryption as well as wiping data.
