[Q] USB Tethering dies off after a while - Nexus 4 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

I'm having a problem with the USB network connection and would appreciate any help to pinpoint the source of this bug.
I've made a similar post here after scanning through endless search results until I noticed the thread dealt about the Samsung Galaxy S III.
So here is the situation:
Enable USB Tethering in your phone
Start some FTP server on your host (in my case Win7 64 and FileZilla freeware FTP server)
Once windows complains it couldn't identify the network, mark it as home network
Start up FolderSync and setup a remote account on your USB-tethered FTP server.
Try to transfer some file to the server via USB tether network
At some point the transfer rate will suddenly stop and no more data is transferred. Both Android and Windows say the connection is still active but no bit can be transferred. After quite a while they say the connection is broken though.
What I tried so far:
Tried with Franco Kernel, Faux Kernel as well as Stock
Other FTP clients like AndFTP have the same problem, but are much slower. FolderSync gives me around 8MB/s.
The transferred test file weighs around 2GB. The most I got so far was 75%, but it always fails at a different position. Sometimes the connection stalls, then it recovers after a few moments, stalls again and then after a while it will die completely.
Any suggestions, ideas, solutions?

I know this thread is really old but... did you find a solution for this? I'm also interested in using the tether interface for file transfer but due to this bug, it's not a feasible method. It's a shame though, I get very good speeds
Btw, I'm on Carbon-rom build 20140629 (KK) with franco kernel r209.

Old thread, but unfortunately without solution.
I'm now running Carbon latest nightly with FauxKernel with recommended tweak settings. It seems to happen not so often with it, but still occurs and the only solution seems to be to unplug and retether.

Problems with PAM disconnecting as soon as it connects

Ok, so I've had issues with vista and pam before, but I have a new one, that I can't find anything about on google, on here, or anywhere else so far. I have a laptop with vista 64 home premium that I can PAM with mogul's ICS using my phone or my wife's (both are on the unlimited PAM plan.) My wife's laptop runs vista 32 home premium, and both of our phones have an identical issue when trying to tether with it, meaning its not an issue with the phones. When connecting to PAM on her laptop, 7/10 time, it will go through the steps, and when the vista networking gets done with identifying, pulling an IP from the phone ICS, and checking for connectivity (which vista does by pinging a server by domain name to determine that the DNS is working in addition to the network being open) it will be up for a split second, then disconnect. Sometimes it will disconnect after Identifying, but before making the connectivity check. The rest of the time, it connects and works fine. We have tested other cables, and recently I tested it under safe mode with networking, and made my first progress.
Under Safe mode with networking, it will connect perfectly every time. The hard part now, is I do not know what program or device conflict could be causing it to disconnect immediately after completing connection. Has anyone had this issue and found any other programs or hardware to interfere?
I haven't had this proble in specific but I did have a problem with using ICS in vista to let my PS3 go online via my laptop using the mogule as my internet connection, in one instant it actually gave me the blue screen of death. I have to say that with Ubuntu and Vista the best way to use the phone as modem is to run ICS (on the phone) and hit connect (I'm speaking about the usb method) the phone will say check cable or something and then hook the cable up. This way has eliminated the quick disconnect witch i experience in Ubuntu a few times.
Hope this help

Bluetooth tethering to OSX

I got my Tilt2 successfully connected to my MacBook Pro and the Bluetooth PAN connection seems fully connected (green light, authenticated, timer running). Connection process was a bit cryptic but I guess I should have expected that... However I can't get a working internet connection (no ability to ping, no web/email).
Also what is the difference between PAN and NAP? I think I know this but not sure. Sometimes the windows on my Tilt say NAP but the connection in the Mac system preferences always says PAN.
Can you also transfer files to/from your Mac to a WinMo device?
Thanks much.
tried some of the guides ?

^ Thanks, indeed I tried many of those links. Many only cover USB connection, many are for Windows PCs only. I got through the very odd set up steps all the way through to the point that everything should just be working yet no data actually flows.
This worked for me: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=531348 . Finally.

WM 6.1, internet connection sharing bug?

Hello everyone,
I have done some research on Google and with the forum search here, but couldnt find out if this is a known issue:
I am using WM pro 6.1 on a Samsung i780. The device has a working internet connection (Internet explorer, connection to exchange server ... all works flawlessly).
When I enable internet connection sharing and surf on the connected laptop this works for about 40 seconds to 10 minutes, then the connection breaks up. I haver to hit "Connect" again on the device and after 10 seconds I am connected again. Of course this is extremely frustrating.
I checked this behaviour with 2 different laptops, one running WinXP, another running Windows7.Same behaviour. So the problem must be with the device and internet connection sharing on the device. The connection is via USB cable, so it ought to be very stable.
Any help would be greatly appreciated. What would be the next steps? What should I try to find out?
I actually know a bit how a computer works (I wrote an even rather successfull computer chess program a long time ago ) but this I can't solve. It is important for me, because I seldome use internet at home and if I can get this to work I dont need another internet connection (saves me 20 Euros a month!)
Thanks again!

to simplify
basically I can imagine the following steps to bugfix:
- is there a debug file in windows mobile 6.1. where it writes info about the internet sharing? then I could check there why it disconnects.
- if not, is there a utility for windows mobile which maybe allows more stable connections opposed to the built in connection sharing?
- should I try updating to 6.5.?
Again: Internet on the device/mobile phone ist stable (!). What disconnects is the "INternet Connections Sharing" even though that is via a USB cable(!).
Thanks.

Problems using remote access to phone

I tried a few different remote access programs to access files on my phone and all of them failed to work properly. Programs I've tried include the following:
http://www.appbrain.com/app/remote-desktop/pl.androiddev.mobiletab
http://www.appbrain.com/app/remote-web-desktop/net.xdevelop.rm
http://www.appbrain.com/app/wireless-file-transfer/com.lextel.transmit
Is there some kind of "firewall" that might be blocking access on my phone? This seems to happen on different ROMs so it doesn't seem to be an isolated issue.
I even tried different browsers on my Windows 7 computer (Firefox and Internet Explorer) both of which failed (page not found).
Anyone else has similar problems or know of a solution?
Thanks.
Does anyone have a similar problem? Stuck with this now. Thanks.
Most of those kind of apps require your phone and computer to be on the same WiFi network, is that the case?
Thanks for the reply. Yes, the last one (Wireless File Transfer) actually won't work unless I'm connected to WiFi. Once I have the connection, the button is not blocked allowing me to enable it. I waited over a minute to see if I can connect from my browsers (Firefox & IE). Both say page not found. I can't even ping it which is weird.
The remote desktop seems to work directly via 3G. It gave me my phone's IP which I tried connecting to and once again, got a page not found.
Can anyone try any of those programs on their HD2 to see if it works? Not sure if it could be the ROM I'm using, but it's the HD2ONE ROM using Clockwork Recovery.
I'm using HyperDroidGBX NAND ROM and still experience this problem. Remote desktop apps (whether it's to connect to a desktop or have a desktop connect to the phone) are not working. I can't enable file sharing apps either (ex: File Expert).
I also want to use the wireless tethering feature. Since I've seen most of the ROMS don't have this working properly, I downloaded the Android Wireless Tether and have the same issue with it working. My computer could connect to the phone without any issues but I can't get any webpage...I could however ping them (ex: google.com). I tried the suggestiongs at that webpage including changing channels and removing the encryption passphrase.
Is there some kind of limitation by the phone or computer? I tried this both using WiFi and on the phone's data service with no luck.
Thanks.

WiFi file transfer apps suddenly don't work anymore on my Samsung Galaxy A20s

I have had my Samsung Galaxy A20s phone for several months. One of the first apps that I usually install is "WiFi File Transfer Pro", which is an older app, but it still works well for transferring files over WiFi. When the app is started, I can just type something like:
http://192.168.0.191:1234
into my laptop's Firefox or Chrome browsers, and I get the complete list of folders on my phone. Then I can download or upload files from and to my phone, by using laptop only. No cable connection is necessary, everything goes over my WiFi router.
Well, this worked normally until today, when I wanted to transfer some files and started the app on the phone, went to my laptop's firefox and when I tried to open the above mentioned address, I got this message in Firefox:
Unable to connect
Firefox can’t establish a connection to the server at 192.168.0.191:1234.
I get a similar message in Chrome on laptop as well:
This site can’t be reached
http://192.168.0.191:1234/ is unreachable.
ERR_ADDRESS_UNREACHABLE
I don't remember that I made any major updates to my phone in the past month (which is when I used the Wifi file transfer app for the last time, and when it worked). I may have installed some new apps in the past few weeks, but, as far as I know, those apps are unlikely to mess with wifi (I could be wrong here, though).
Strangely enough, if I open Firefox or Chrome browsers on my Samsung A20s phone, and go to the above mentioned address, I DO GET the list of folders from Wifi File Transfer Pro app, as if everything is working fine!
However ,on my laptop, it looks as if the phone's web server (I believe that is how it's called) is not reaching it at all.
I had a similar issue before because one app on the phone used to block the web server from being seen on other devices. It was "Open VPN Connect", which I use to access my VPN provider. However, now even when that app is not working, the web server from my phone doesn't reach my laptop over WiFi.
I tried many other similar apps that enable one to transfer files by using the web or ftp server, and none of them now works with my laptop. However, they all DO work on the phone's browsers.
Could someone please help me diagnose and fix this problem? This phone definitely worked well with these file transfer apps, and they worked normally with my laptop.
By the way, on my laptop I have Manjaro XFCE with the latest updates.
I've just found the solution!
It seems I ticked an option in my router settings a few days ago which messes with this file transfer function (and then kinda forgot about it). The setting is called "All the wireless client device is completely isolated". This should be switched off, and I have probably ticked it inadvertently.
