Hello everyone,
I have done some research on Google and with the forum search here, but couldnt find out if this is a known issue:
I am using WM pro 6.1 on a Samsung i780. The device has a working internet connection (Internet explorer, connection to exchange server ... all works flawlessly).
When I enable internet connection sharing and surf on the connected laptop this works for about 40 seconds to 10 minutes, then the connection breaks up. I haver to hit "Connect" again on the device and after 10 seconds I am connected again. Of course this is extremely frustrating.
I checked this behaviour with 2 different laptops, one running WinXP, another running Windows7.Same behaviour. So the problem must be with the device and internet connection sharing on the device. The connection is via USB cable, so it ought to be very stable.
Any help would be greatly appreciated. What would be the next steps? What should I try to find out?
I actually know a bit how a computer works (I wrote an even rather successfull computer chess program a long time ago ) but this I can't solve. It is important for me, because I seldome use internet at home and if I can get this to work I dont need another internet connection (saves me 20 Euros a month!)
Thanks again!

to simplify
basically I can imagine the following steps to bugfix:
- is there a debug file in windows mobile 6.1. where it writes info about the internet sharing? then I could check there why it disconnects.
- if not, is there a utility for windows mobile which maybe allows more stable connections opposed to the built in connection sharing?
- should I try updating to 6.5.?
Again: Internet on the device/mobile phone ist stable (!). What disconnects is the "INternet Connections Sharing" even though that is via a USB cable(!).
Thanks.

I want to setup my P3600 (English ROM) as a 3.5G modem for my PC but not successful yet. The Telco service staff has no idea too and pass me a manual for dopod 838 pro. The mentioned programs are not there, nor in my dopod D810 CD.
I can:
- Activesync using USB
- Activesync using bluetooth
Question:
- Should I use the same HTC modem dialer on my PC for XDA?
- Should I use the Start->Program->Internet Sharing?. It allows me to choose bluetooth or USB to PC but both not working too after connect.
Anyone successfully connect their PC via P3600 using HSDPA, pls share the steps. Many thanks.
Eventually, I figure it out myself.
Forget all the HTC modem dialer or wireless modem program as in Xda.
1. Start->Program->Internet Sharing on WM5.0
2. Select the connection type: USB or BT
3. Select "Connect"
4. Then connect the USB and done.
For BT, it would have instruction for you to start PAN now. done.
Woo, it's much easier than the HTC dialer. But now my problem is VPN problem with my telco.
Thanks very much for reporting this info back, it will come in useful when I get my trinity!

Sadly, because Internet Sharing is actually a NAT server running on your phone, it could prevent you from using 'classic' VPN. You can find more details by googling for 'VPN over NAT'.
for VPN purposes you can always use old good wireless modem mode. it works well.
I don't think it is related to NAT. As long as the VPN ports are opened, it should work. I am using a Wireless router at home and no trouble at all for using VPN under NAT.
Checked with telco. They can enable it for me with extra charge/month. and also the traffic would be charged as expensive GPRS plan. What kind of service!!!
Think twice before subscribing. I used "WonToFee / 1-1-" . The sales that say it can work for VPN may not even know what a TCP port is.
Anyone has use VPN over HSDPA with another telco? e.g. SMOOTH TONE
Hello,
This thread is a bit old, however I think it is related to my problem: I am trying to use Internet Sharing on my P3600 (ROM 1.23.405.2 / Radio ROM 1.38.00.11). Using BT, it works just fine. However, when connected on USB it works fine only for the first time. When I tap "disconnect", the HSDPA connection is stopped, but the status keeps displaying "Connected". There is now way to use Internet Sharing again before a soft reset (Windows XP wouldn't even recognize the P3600 again). Is this a known issue? I have googled a bit, but I haven't found any similar problems.
Thanks!

Hi shefful,
I have had the same problem. I have come across a possible solution while browsing forums. When you need to disconnect press and hold down the red end call button for a few seconds and this disconnects the modem. I haven't tried this yet but it's worth a shot.
regards
Adam

Hi adamwolfe,
Thanks for your help, unfortunatelly this is not the solution to my problem. The GPRS connection ends (according to the icon on top of the screen), but the status keeps displaying "Connected". The application stops responding and can't be stopped from Settings/Memory/Runnning Programs.
Hi shefful,
Yeah, I have the same problem too. Looks like the program freezes in the Connected status. Even tried terminating Internet Sharing with Start/Settings/.../Memory/Running Programs and relaunching Internet Sharing.
Sometimes I get a popup message saying the remote host has terminated the connection before the program hangs. I think this may be the cause of the problem. Which mobile operator are you on?
Rebooting is the only solution so far. Fortunately the Trinity reboots in 20 seconds - one of the fastest in the PPC market I think.
Hi ayhansan,
For other reasons I needed to hard reset my Trinity and the freezing problem has disappeared. I don't know what had caused this problem, I just hope it won't happen again. If I disconnect the USB cable, the status changes to "disconnected" and I can always reconnect.
same problem here
i am connecting to laptop thru USB
after I disconnect UMTS phone syaing still connected
and want kill Internet Sharing
???
thanks

does this work with Mac as well?
Guys,
I have a Touch HD and I have tried as I might to get it working with Wifi and Data connection perfectly; let me explain.
What I want to happen is this:
Wifi to connect to my home router (which it does) and allow the internet and access to my network (think I have that one sorted)
Data connection to start on all Internet based applications, when Wifi is not turned on
When Wifi is turned on, this connection to be used for all internet based applications
My issue is that I can only ever get some of these working at a time. For instance, my email is set to check every 5 minutes. If my wifi is on, my data connection still fires up and attempts to grab my mail, as opposed to using my already connected wifi connection.
I think I have sorted the Wifi connection issue when connecting to my network...I used to have to switch between "Internet" and "Work" for it to identify my LAN....however Resco Explorer seems to fix this issue.
Can anyone provide a comprehensive guide as to how to achieve the above....just annoys me how shockingly implemented WinMo networking is!
Thanks again - all help appreciated.
Sorry, I have no solution for what you ask.

Lately I do have problems using my WiFi though. I have it all setup with my home router since months and had no problems. Then at some point (don't know when exactly), all programs (like the weather, opera, email) started to not be able to connect anywhere, while at the same time my HD reports it is connected to my home WiFi network.
Everything works fine (internetwise) when connected through Activesync.
I saw this "Internet" and "My Work" options too, and I also have Resco Explorer. Could you please explain what it is you have sorted out in case it helps people ?
Edit: here's the problem thread
I have an unlocked HD2 with Vodafone Internet access.
As long as I use my phone standalone I can browse the Web just fine.
But as soon as I activate WiFi Router or try to establish a BT PAN with my PC, my GPRS Internet goes down and thus my PC can't get onto the Internet eitherm.
Anyone can help with this one?
bump...bump....
so re enable gprs connection in the data manager, then

But it is enabled (all the time). Its just that any browser complains that it can't find the server - until I break the connection to the PC and then it all works again.

Hi,
Could it be that the phone is preventing this as network operators charge extra for using the phone as a modem (tethering)?
I've not got my phone yet but I'm guessing there will be something to prevent you doing this!
Cheers,
Gavin

You are probably right. I tested the router and it works perfectly, so it's not a hardware or a software problem.

Are you folks saying that the phone service provider can actually "sense" if my phone is in "modem mode" and as a result of that drop the Internet connection?
Because I found that the same thing happens if I connect the phone via USB cable to a PC and activate "Internet Sharing via USB".
Its a real pain in the rear, because many web pages just won't load right w/o areal PC browser.
Opera Mobile truly sucks as soon as you have more than 3 tabs open, and Fennec doesn't even display my soft keyboard.
NetFront sometimes works and then it doesn't and then it works again.
And the dreaded Internet Explorer often simply TERMINATES w/o any reason as soon as I switch to another application. Swuuush and its gone and I have to start from scratch again and just keep watching and watching that progress bar crawl on.
I either need a REAL web browser (don't think there is one for Windows Mobile) or to find a way how to activate the router function w/o loosing my Internet connection in the process.
Is your connection dropped as soon as you connect your HD2 to your PC or after you send a first request from the PC browser?
I don't see how your provider could "sense" ,as you said, that your phone is in modem mode (unless they cooked a ROM that does it )
But, when your browser sends a request, along with the page you are requesting, it sends its "user agent" (it identifies itself as IE, Firefox, Opera or whatever browser you're using on your PC) This can be trapped by your provider, who, in turn, could decide to drop the connection, I guess.
If it's what's happening, a possible workaround would be to install on your PC a plugin that will change the "user agent" and impersonate a phone.

The connection goes stone dead as soon as the HD2 has established a (network) connection with the PC, be it via USB, Bluetooth or WiFi.
It happens even when I specifically choose the "Share Internet (use Phone as Modem)" setting.
And as soon as I break the connection with my PC, I can browse the web on the phone again.
For me this is real problem, as there are many web site I need to visit which are just to complex to view on the HD2.
I have a similar problem. When I use my HD 2 as a router and connect my laptop to it, the internet connection sucks hard. Videos on YouTube are loading for ages, web pages are loading very long and eventually I get a connection timeout or a server not found message. Then after some minutes it just works fine again and pages are loading very fast, but only for a brief moment.
I am sure that this is not a provider (I got o2) problem, cause when I put my sim card in my old nokia n95 and use it as a router (I use joikuspot for this), everything works like a charm! I get full HDSPA, everything is loading very fast without any disconnects or something like that. So it has to be a hardware problem or a winmo problem I guess!
This is really annoying!

I would expect that to happen, because using the phone as a modem the phone will wait for the computer to issue the dial command.
using the wifirouter the phone instigates the dial so the computer just gets handed the connection.
I got my Tilt2 successfully connected to my MacBook Pro and the Bluetooth PAN connection seems fully connected (green light, authenticated, timer running). Connection process was a bit cryptic but I guess I should have expected that... However I can't get a working internet connection (no ability to ping, no web/email).
Also what is the difference between PAN and NAP? I think I know this but not sure. Sometimes the windows on my Tilt say NAP but the connection in the Mac system preferences always says PAN.
Can you also transfer files to/from your Mac to a WinMo device?
Thanks much.
tried some of the guides ?

^ Thanks, indeed I tried many of those links. Many only cover USB connection, many are for Windows PCs only. I got through the very odd set up steps all the way through to the point that everything should just be working yet no data actually flows.
This worked for me: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=531348 . Finally.
boss, i am using following
1. device- htc hd2 , win mob6.5
rom- 1.66.415.9 wwe.

i have been using the internet of my computer by active sync in my htc hd2. and everything was working very nicely. my hd2 have been connecting to laptop and the internet of laptop in a second and was very good. suddenly few days ago the htc weather stopped updating.

but i cant use 1.win. my phone, 2.marketplace 3.magic mobile currency converter 4.open market. when ever i try too connect them or start this applications, they replies could not establish a connection. check your internet connection.
i have been trying to fix it. i used all the methods i found in xda website, like active sync config, uninstall-install, active sync>file>connection>this com is connected to internrt. registry tweak to add d-word value allowLPS and all
on device i checked connection setup, kept my work connection in advanced setup, changed them did a lot of things. i updated the connection database of all operator also, but no result.
