[Q] Opening up Samsung features to developers - Galaxy S 4 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Do you think Samsung will allow developers to have access to their special features and sensors such as Air View, Air Gestures, IR Blaster, Temperature Sensor, etc... If not, do you think these features can be accessed and ported over to different roms in the future?

Crud, I didn't see there was a questions page. Mod please move this thread to that page. Thank you.

Slimkat ROM w/stock spen apps?

Hello everyone,
This is my first time posting and I am fairly new to android, ROMS, development, etc.
Please forgive me if I ask any dumb questions or ones that have already been asked before, but so far, I haven't been able to find too much info on this.
I recently flashed the Temasek CM11 WO3 tweaks ROM and it worked amazing, however,as I'm sure everyone knows, there is no support for things like Air Command, air view, air gestures, etc. First, I was wondering if there are any mods/add ons that would be able to make use of this functionality, and second, I was wondering if it would be possible to place stock Samsung apps (snote3, action memo, etc) on the SD card and subsequently install them while running an AOSP ROM like the temasek one mentioned above? Would that work or would it just be a pointless endeavor?

Hello
Stock Samsung apps require samsung frameworks in order to work on your phone. In other words, you can't have samsung and AOSP at the same time. This is why you don't see samsung and HTC apps available for other devices, as they will not work without being excessively hacked to work with other frameworks
In an analogy.. the bonnet on a ferrari will not fit on my mazda3 without being hacked to fit, to work on the different framework

Ahhh, that makes sense...
Thanks for the reply poondog and for explaining.
Have been looking for this question everywhere! Thanks
However, do you guys have any alternative apps that have similar functions to spen air command? Thank you all in advance

There are equal alternatives to S-Note and other Samsung s-pen apps.
Try:
https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.tushar.cmspen
Together with:
https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.tushar.spen_helper
Or maybe:

Been using Samsung along with AOSP based roms for years now and haven't missed Samsung S-Pen apps a sec.
Nice, and what apps do you suggest for jotting notes down using the Spen? I was under the impression that Evernote supported it but I was never able to find this option in the program.
I haven't used Evernote in a while, so things might have changed. And I'm on SlimKat ROM, so I guess I'll need additional software to make Spen work.

You could try Handrite, there's a free and pro version on the Play store.
You can have multiple notebooks in which to save your notes (on the free version you can only have 3 notebooks) and there are multiple options to customise your text (colours, underline, you can mix your writing with regular text input, etc)
evernote. handwriting
I use evernote pretty regularly. When you creat page you can go to the top There is a plus symbol at the top. Press this and gives you drop down menu. May eed to hit more handwriting is there.
They are correct spen features must use touchwiz. You can use a launcher that makes device feel different and aircommands etc will work. I am running a rom based off i317 and n7105 hybrid that have these options. Great thing is that you can sync snote with evernote so can open with aircommands and then will sink to evernote. This way you can view on another device like computer.
The advantage to slim rom is removal bloatware makes cor a smooth runnig device. Oems sometimes push their own without actually working to optimize like they should. Poor battery etc.
If you want something similar to aircommands you could try something like pie controls. Have it set to launch an app.
You might try something like papyrus. I believe it has setting to use finger or active pen in menus.
Enjoy!

What software features will I lose if I flash CM11?

I know there's much to be gained from using a custom rom but I'm just wondering what I will lose if go for an AOSP based rom like CyanogenMod?
I'm presuming things like the Samsung Camera app (is image quality affected?), Smart stay etc. What about Multi-Window, can I get that back?
No multiwindow, no camera (not last time I saw anyway), GPS issues I think, no smart stay, scroll, air view, air gesture, ultra power saving, smart pause, ripple lockscreen, finger print, toolbox and pretty much everything non hardware that makes your s5 an s5 and not a nexus.

Thanks for the info. Hopefully they'll get CM11 fully working soon. I was under the impression that you could sideload some apps like Multi-Window, is this not true?

A question about features on AOSP based roms for Note4

I'd like to ask what would be the state of each of the next features on Note 4 (any of its models) when moving to an AOSP based rom (like CM, Omni, PA, ...) :
1. MHL/HDMI
2. Screen recording.
3. S-Pen
4. Calls recording
5. hovering with the fingers.
6. touching with gloves
7. sensors
8. IR
9. Any TW app (camera, keyboard, etc...)
By state, I mean, how well would it function, if at all.
For the S-Pen, of course some features won't be available, but maybe it could function in its basic way.
Also, I'd like to ask (as I don't really own the device) : what would you miss the most in case you moved from stock-Samsung rom to AOSP-based rom?
Any feature I didn't mention ?
Well coming from the Note 2 and Note 3 that had AOSP roms, no.
None of the special TouchWiz features will work once you're on pure Android.

Basic things like the screen recording, call recording, ir blaster and sensors will will work. Mostly, s pen features will all be gone. You won't have a need to use it once on AOSP.
AOSP experience from Note 3.
Recently coming from the Note 3 running CM 11 Nightlies and other more customizable AOSP rom. Ive noticed that the S Pen works at its most basic capacity. That being said, there was no cursor like there is on TW and the option to add one adds the traditional pc mouse cursor with is way too big for my taste. Features like screen recording were built in to some or could be with Xposed. Call recording also came built in as well or could be added as well. Hdmi ive never tried although chrome cast would work better. Touch sensitivity was in one of the AOSP roms ive used so its duable depending on what dev makes the rom with contributing features in mind. IR was a no go since i dont really use the feature although i do see it usability to others so it would be a keen addition. I currently own the T-Mobile Note 4 and got it on day one and i CANNOT wait to get my hands on a note 4 rom already but, gotta be patiant. I know that was all out of place but, hopefully you understood and it helped!!
IR Worked fine on CyanogenMod on my Note 3.

Getting Motion and Gestures features working

Is there any way of getting all of the Motion and Gestures and Air View features to work? Through most of the awesome ROM's that our Devs have made for us, most of the features don't work when they're selected. I didn't know if there's a 'modded' apk or what not to get them to work. I know that Samsung had pulled those features due to battery drain but regardless of that, I pretty much liked the features. Plus, they're in the ROM's, so why are they unusable? Any help or direction to get them to work would be great. Thank you in advance.
