Hello everyone,
This is my first time posting and I am fairly new to android, ROMS, development, etc.
Please forgive me if I ask any dumb questions or ones that have already been asked before, but so far, I haven't been able to find too much info on this.
I recently flashed the Temasek CM11 WO3 tweaks ROM and it worked amazing, however,as I'm sure everyone knows, there is no support for things like Air Command, air view, air gestures, etc. First, I was wondering if there are any mods/add ons that would be able to make use of this functionality, and second, I was wondering if it would be possible to place stock Samsung apps (snote3, action memo, etc) on the SD card and subsequently install them while running an AOSP ROM like the temasek one mentioned above? Would that work or would it just be a pointless endeavor?

Hello
Stock Samsung apps require samsung frameworks in order to work on your phone. In other words, you can't have samsung and AOSP at the same time. This is why you don't see samsung and HTC apps available for other devices, as they will not work without being excessively hacked to work with other frameworks
In an analogy.. the bonnet on a ferrari will not fit on my mazda3 without being hacked to fit, to work on the different framework

Thanks for the reply poondog and for explaining.
Have been looking for this question everywhere! Thanks
However, do you guys have any alternative apps that have similar functions to spen air command? Thank you all in advance

There are equal alternatives to S-Note and other Samsung s-pen apps.
Try:
https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.tushar.cmspen
Together with:
https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.tushar.spen_helper
Or maybe:
https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.gmd.spencontrol
Been using Samsung along with AOSP based roms for years now and haven't missed Samsung S-Pen apps a sec.
Nice, and what apps do you suggest for jotting notes down using the Spen? I was under the impression that Evernote supported it but I was never able to find this option in the program.
I haven't used Evernote in a while, so things might have changed. And I'm on SlimKat ROM, so I guess I'll need additional software to make Spen work.

You could try Handrite, there's a free and pro version on the Play store.
You can have multiple notebooks in which to save your notes (on the free version you can only have 3 notebooks) and there are multiple options to customise your text (colours, underline, you can mix your writing with regular text input, etc)
evernote. handwriting
I use evernote pretty regularly. When you creat page you can go to the top There is a plus symbol at the top. Press this and gives you drop down menu. May eed to hit more handwriting is there.
They are correct spen features must use touchwiz. You can use a launcher that makes device feel different and aircommands etc will work. I am running a rom based off i317 and n7105 hybrid that have these options. Great thing is that you can sync snote with evernote so can open with aircommands and then will sink to evernote. This way you can view on another device like computer.
The advantage to slim rom is removal bloatware makes cor a smooth runnig device. Oems sometimes push their own without actually working to optimize like they should. Poor battery etc.
If you want something similar to aircommands you could try something like pie controls. Have it set to launch an app.
You might try something like papyrus. I believe it has setting to use finger or active pen in menus.
Enjoy!

Hello. Today I flashed a rom, and there are no S-Pen applications. Is there a possibility to install them afterwards?
You have posted in the wrong forum.
But to answer your question: no I'm sorry. The s pen apps from samsung need samsungs touchwiz to work. You have to find alternatives. I miss them too :/ but with that said some of the alternatives are quite ok.
Next time search before posting.

It really depends on what ROM you flashed. S-Pen apps are not supported with cm9 or any cm based rom. You can search about it.

It may be semantics, but cm9 does not make the s-pen useless. Sure you can't run Samsung's s-pen applications, but there are applications that seem to use at least some of the s-pen features. I recently downloaded "Papyrus". You can write easily with the pen and it knows the difference between the pen and your finger. (You can write with the pen and erase with your finger). I found this quite effective. The pen button is functional as well. I was so impressed I assigned Papyrus to my "Home, Back" key combination. (I haven't used s-note long enough to know where Papyrus falls short however).

S-pen apps, please re-read my statement. I'm on cm9 nightlies right now and I have tried that. The pen was not taken for granted and I have been using it. Thus, you are stating what I've stated, just made it brief.
What S-Pen apps are there that are not done better with 3rd party apps. I am using Clean Note 3 at the moment but have remaoved all Samsung apps including S-Note. Papyrus is just better than S-Note. In fact I can't remember when I last used the S-Pen as I have terrible hand writing and can't draw so it is wasted on me.
No it cant be. I'd try that also when im on Paranoid android rom.
First. I backup s memo when im on stock ICS.
And try to restore when im on paranoid android.
It says "Application not installed" And it stay in it.
I recommend to use MIUI beta 6 or Criskelo v7 rom.
It has a S memo and S note
I only need the calender. is there a good alternative?
No, and frankly you should have read up better before flashing - it is pretty common knowledge that Samsung exclusive apps aren't going to work on a non-Samsung OS. It is like having Internet Explorer on Linux!

Dear All,
I have been using different roms in this forum for my galaxy note n7000 and I would like to thank all the developers and contributors for coming out with innovative ideas to make the best use of the hardware in galaxy note n7000.
I have been using many roms and finally stuck to paranoidandroid 2.+ which in my view is the best jb rom available. Recently utacka has uploaded a beta version with stylus gestures (see post #3150 on this page http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1871713&page=315) and I have been using it. I wanted to give my feadback on this but, I am a newbie at least in writing in the forum so I can write comments in the development section so, I write here.
I have used pa_n7000-2.22-17OKT2012-035657-beta-Utacka.zip and I have configured the spen as follows..
1. spen double tap : open floatnote (just like smemo in touchwiz)
2. and once you note something on floatnote you can share it with memo which is the best alternative to smemo on cm10
3. I also configured some other apps such as swipe left to open sketchbook, swipe right to open gallery, swipe down for weather etc..
It is still work in progress (WIP) but as it is now its quite good.
I found that not many people on that thread have responded and gave their experiences on the beta version with stylus gestures, so, I would like some people to try this rom and give their feedback in that thread so, that utacka will keep updating it.
Ravi
What wow. I had no idea we can now use the s-pen with paranoid. Nice. Thanks for this man. Hope it gets better.
Hello Ravi,
Thanks so much for giving this writeup.
I was wondering if you could comment: on a screenshot I saw, it looked like enabling S pen gestures disabled use of the button in apps which allow alternate-button input, for example in Memo it triggers the erase tool. Is this the case, or did I misunderstand?
Also, is it possible to trigger the S pen to function as the back and menu buttons, as on stock ROM?

No, not yet. Back + menu doesn't work like on stock. What you can do with the features is starting apps. I didn't test out long enough as to know if it interferes with GNote or similar.
But, I would highly recommend to read thoroughly the warnings by Entropy512: it is a work in progress with an "ugly settings hack (IIRC) whose security consequences are unknown".
If you can deal with it, fair enough.

Ya as you said one should read the warnings before flashing this rom. Also, it does conflict with s-button function in memo. But, what I did was to enable all the spen gestures use them to start apps as described earlier. Take screenshot or make a note with floatnote and share it with memo. And in memo I enabled finger to be used as eraser tool, so I can take notes with stylus and erase with finger even as the fucntion of s button conflicts with spen gestures.
I also agree that its still work in progress, but sofar I have been using this rom for litle over 2 days and found it to be very stable. So, I want maximum people to use it and give feedback to utacka and the cm10 team so that they can come up with roms with imroved spen features.

I think AA1973 has answered your question. spen gestures in cm 10 are still work in progress. I just want keep people working on it, not stop its developments because of luke warm response from users. Hope Utacka will soon update the beta version.
I would drop Sammy roms if cm/paranoid roms could equal the smooth accuracy of the spens flow that Sammy roms seem to have. I am constantly going back and forth between utakas nightlys and rocket ROM, absolutely love paranoid roms, but the spen fluidity is just not as nice as on Sammy roms, I use the spen all the time. Really pleased utakas giving it a go with spen gestures.

PA ROM will be a hit once the s pen features is fully working
I read somewhere that Samsung is promising JB for the SGN... This will be good news, as we can then expect a really good, bug free PA!
EDIT:
Nevermind, I found it myself. The new version of floatnote is posted on another thread:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1803284
Hi,
this sounds pretty cool. Haven't tried the beta versions yet, but that would be one reason to do so (and to encourage Utacka to continue with this).
However, I can't find that "floatnote" app that you talk about. On the market (erm, play store) there's only "floating notes", which only allows keyboard and no hand/pen support. And then there an app called "FloatNote" ( see http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1812344 ), however, it doesn't offer any possibility to share the notes ...
Where did you get that app?
Thanks,
Fritz

I have been using 2.56 for over a week now and it's a great rom. It's like having a new phone!
I am having only one issue, my keyboard, Swiftkey, stops working after reboot. The three suggestions appear as blank buttons when i type.
There seems to be some word suggestions that appear when i tap on a word. That is helpful and i think its new in this rom. But i do want my swiftkey back.
In ICS there was always a notification that allowed me to change keyboards as i typed. It is not happening now. I am not sure if this is a jelly bean thing or a paranoid thing.
I love jb and this rom. The keyboard is my only issue.

Latest PA here with latest Swiftkey installed and not a problem with that, that's strange.... but anyways in your case I would go to app manager, clean the data and uninstall the app first, then wipe cache and dalvik cache from within recovery and once rebooted re-install Swiftkey from Google Play again.
If it helped hit THANKS! Cheers!

Some of the key S-Pen features are indeed already implemented on Utacka's PA and so forth ported to some other hybrid ROMs with PA, but will never be exactly the same as you found them on TW framework..... for full usability of S-Pen and S-Apps I recommend you stick with the stock rom or stock based (ICS or JB leaks) ones
Are you using 2.56 or 2.57?
Reinstalling SwiftKey fixes the problem, but it comes back after reboot.
I have been rebooting my phone daily using llama. Maybe I should stop that.
I'm glad to hear it's working fine for you.

Just thought I might share this experience for those who are foolish enough like me. You must understand I am not a developer but I love to tinker.
While most are busy porting apps, wallpapers, ringtones, etc from the Galaxy S4, I thought why don't I port the Galaxy Note 8 instead. So with a bunch of foolishness, I downloaded the Galaxy Note 8 N5100XXBMC9_N5100OXABMC8_DBT Firmware, extracted, deodexed and zipaligned it and copied all the system/apps and the system/frameworks & system/etc/permissions and a lot of system/lib files & /media and /fonts folder, packed it in a pre-made note1 rom, edited the build.prop and set lcd density to 213 (as this is the density that the note 8 is using) and flashed it thru recovery. Luckily it booted and reached the Setup screen showing some errors which I ignored and just went thru the whole setup wizard sometimes rebooting itself and going back to the setup screen again until I finally made it thru the google setup page and eventually the homescreen and greeted with a very nice wallpaper. At this point, the systemui is not working, nor does wifi but telephony works so does mms. Gallery, Video Player, Music Player, File Manager, Splanner with pefect fitting Calendar widget, Email, Alarm, World Clock, airview and some other extra apps - all working fine with few minor bugs. Calculator, Snote, Quick Command, screenshot not working.
So I immediately tried to activate multiwindows which is the feature I am after. Like the note1 and note2, just long pressing the back button activates the multiwindow bar. There are two modes to the multiwindow bar, dual mode and cascade mode. While the note 10.1 uses the systemui traybar to show multiwindow apps, the Note 8 uses the flashbar tray to launch multiwindow apps. There are some differences as you can see in the video.
There are a lot of work to be done for a full port specially the systemui and wifi. I am not sure which framework files or lib files are hardware related so I am not sure if it is worth the effort to make a full port at all. But I learned some things doing this foolish thing and might give others the courage to try things, to learn, to explore even in the face of failure. I am still as noob as when I started learning about android 4 months ago. There is so much to learn and I am having a great time being part of an open system and a great community like xda. I would say there is so much more to learn here than in school. For all the things I have learned in a span of 4 months here in xda, I would like to say THANK YOU.

"IF" and when I have a stable enough port of the Note 8 ROM, I will definitely SHARE it here in xda. At the moment it is pretty unstable and I am having second thoughts about it. Using it for a while, there is nothing really special about it except of course the multiwindow feature. It uses a mostly WHITE theme which is not good for battery life and eyesight. Apart from the new flashbar multiwindow, most Note 8 stock apps can run on stock JB note1 using 213 dpi like TW Launcher, Galllery, VideoPlayer, MMS, Email, Task Manager, Music Player, Splanner, Clock and Weather Widgets, File Manager, Awesome Note, Flipboard, Svoice, Chrome, etc. Gesturepad does not run but there are better alternatives on the PlayStore. Polaris Office tablet runs well on the port but on the stock note1 rom, it doesn't run probably because it is checking some signature. Readers hub now detects whether device is rooted or not and does not run on rooted roms. Snote tablet does not work but the Snote ported by arsaw for GS3 works well enough. As the systemui is not working I could not test the Reading Mode feature - it could be something that can be ported from android.policy. The rest are just minor stuff.
Talking about the multiwindow feature - the default uses the same native multiwindow as the stock multiwindow on the note1 and note2 which is the multiwindow feature shown on commercials and Note 8 review sites. But once you delete the com.sec.feature.multiwindow.phone.xml file in permissions folder, you will get multiwindow just like the one on the video I have shown which is better of course as apps can be maximised and restored to window mode back and forth - which is already available on note1 using my floating multiwindow and tablet ui mods.
What are your thoughts, Guys? What feature do you think is worth porting/using a Note 8 Rom?
P.S. I have uploaded the base ROM and it is very unstable at the moment but it lets you experience first hand what I have been talking about. It is only for those who know what they are doing. So if you are interested to try, send me a PM and I will share the link. But a BIG WARNING, I am not responsible for any damage that may result in flashing it. It uses Philz xxlsz 4.35 kernel which do not have the bootloop fix but it's the one I use because I dont get bootloops with it. As for the Note 8 stock apps for those who are using 213 phablet or tablet ui modes, I will upload them later.

Some updates...
I have managed to port fully working Snote with idea sketch with more features than the note2 snote app. Also comes with S Page widget. A better looking Quick Snote.
I also managed to port the keyboard with three layouts - qwerty, floating, split - and with awesome handwriting recognition using vision objects engine.
So far, Splanner with handwriting mode perfectly working with perfectly fitting widget on Homescreen at 213 dpi.
Polaris Office tablet working with some watermarks but can be hacked with smali edit I guess.
All ported apps will be shared once I finished pinpointing the necessary lib files.

Just noticed it's UI is clipped (undo redo arrows) and possibly other controls. Was not successful changing the DPI for this app, also no problem changing it for others. Any suggestion how to change it?
Also - don't you have additional languages for the hand writing recognition, particularly Czech?
Thanks a lot!

I'm sure some people have figured this out and there might even be a post about it, but I just wanted discuss what I've done to get some S-pen functionality back and to hear about what you've done. I just flashed ParanoidAndroid 3.1 and it's absolutely awesome. I didn't think I'd like not having the Samsung apps but I'm easily getting over that. I'm an avid pen user so naturally I'm doing everything I can to continue using. (Yeah it's like a drug to me.)
So, here's what I have going on:
I use GMD Spen control (found on the market for $$) to retain some gestures and add a few of my own. Unfortunately the frequently used screenshot tap is Samsung only so I'm at a loss there. It works excellent tho.
I use Catch Sketch to replace S-note. So far this app works great. The pen selector seems has a bug on the last pen and looks a lil goofy but it's basically the same as S-note. It seems to lack the color copy feature but it might show up when your coloring on a photo or something.
I use Swype that I downloaded from their actual website to retain the write to text feature.
So that's what I'm working with. If anyone has suggestions or things you've found work better please let me know!

The only thing missing for me is the ability to take snap shots of certain parts of the screen. With the Samsung stock rom I like to be able to circle parts of the screen and cut them out. I have not found any AOSP alternative to this yet. So for now I just take a full screen shot and then crop out the bits I need. Only an extra step but hey ho.
Yeah I completely forgot about that feature. Hopefully someone will be able to make similar applications soon. But they'll probably end up replaced and obsolete soon anyways lol

Hey guys I have an question to you.
Does it happen to you when you write on the screen with the S-Pen and you put it away, that for one to two seconds your screen doesn't react to fingerinput? No matter what app I use this happens but not in Samsung roms.
I don't generally use the s-pen, except to show off the bigger Note's flagship features to awestruck noobs. I moved to 4.2.2 but came back to a Sammy firmware based ROM yesterday, due to some issues. I used to play with the S-pen a lot when I bought the phone. There's one great s-pen app that I like, though - Scribble Racer.

Yep. S-Note isn't the best for anything really. I was a fan of Lecture Notes for quite a time, now I'm using Papyrus which isn't quite as customisable but makes up by being lighter and faster. It's quite adequate for my humble needs.

I just dont have the safe feeling without my samsung apps eventhough I used apex but the feeling of samsung is gone. And im sure you would want a rom build out of a samsung note 2 source rather than a aokp or cm10.1 or even aosp or aospa sources as to me I feel it lacks of a samsung felling.battery life definitely sucks too.and to relate back to the spen well I wouldnt want to remove the spen feature even seldom use it.cuz snote sometimes comes in handy too.
You can use a gesture to take a screenshot with the S-Pen with this app, and edit the screnshots.

But yeah can't do the selection thing.
I wish one of the note apps had floating windows.
This app is interesting, but no way to save or anything (yet).

What about handwriting recognition w/ keyboard? And airview? Handrite looks fine, will have to check it out, but I keep going back to S Notes - funny
because I don't really love it either :/
Awesome Note is great, and doesn't work as seamlessly on AOSP as it does with TW, but the size is too tiny for my liking anyways, on Note II since it's optimized for Note 8.

Great app. Maybye this link should be posted in the Theme's and Apps section.
I use Papyrus, very nice S-pen app
My note 10.1-2012 with cyanogenmod is so much faster for drawing with sketchbook. Zooming and pen tracking are fantastic. I loved it so much that I went for the 2014 model. Disappoint! The whole reason i got this tab was to sketch and the performance just isnt there. Currently using the latest Bindroid and I don't blame the ROM, I blame touch wiz. Users rallied to get DutchDanny (the dev of Bindroid) a tab maybe it could happen again to get CM for us? Anyone want it want it as bad as I do?!

I'm saying it here from the moment i got my Note!
But as far as i know, there is no Developer that knows how to port a Vanilla ROM to our device...
Sad
Edit:
I want it more than you!
No. Almost everyone with Note 2's 3's 2012's uses a touch wiz rom. Wont be any different here. Im not getting rid of software that makes up 90% of the reason I buy Samsung products.

No desire for cyanogenmod here. While some of touch wiz is annoying, if I wanted a vanilla experience I would have bought a nexus.

You can get almost ALL of the TW features in Vanilla! With some Apps and more Devs... It's the meaning of Android - we can always change software!

Most people get a Note for the Spen features and you will lose most all of them and specifically the Air Command if you go with Cyanogen Mod. I had the Nexus 7.2 for a bit and in my opinion AOSP is very boring. A couple of years ago phones and tablets did not have the processing power to deal with TW and Sense so AOSP was very helpful for a better experience but now that is a non issue. The biggest problem with getting AOSP on this device is the cost. Most developers are not going to buy it.

I am quite sure there are lots of developers capable of porting AOSP to this device. The correct way to say it is there is no one willing to port it.

You have to be kidding me. There are plenty of manufactures who give a vanilla or near vanilla experience. The nexus is a great high end vanilla experience. Why are you knowingly buying products you do not like? Like it or not, what sets *most* Android manufacturers apart are the skins they create.
Samsung must be doing something right now selling the lion's share of Android systems. I bought the note for a reason and Cyanogenmod cannot provide that same experience no matter how many 3rd party apps are installed.

I like the Note, cuz it's coming with special pressure screen and s pen. Now I promise you that porting s pen's fetures from TW to CM is possible.
Yes, It wont be EXACLY like TW's features. But Vanilla has another great things to offer that will cover on it.

The Spen features are built into the framework. Cyanogen Mod does not have the feature in its framework. Also the Note devices have a Wacom digitizer along with the standard capacitive touchscreen. Some apps will work in Cyanogen mod but no apps which use the Samsung SDK for pen features will work. While I used the Nexus 7 2013, Cyanogen Mod was the worst of the AOSP based roms as they changed their drivers from AOSP based to CAF based which broke lots of things. The best AOSP roms are AOKP and Paranoid Android. AOSP would change this tablet into a faster Nexus 10 which I had and got the Note 2014 because of the Spen features.
PS Ditch the CAPSLOCK. No need in yelling since you are voicing opinions.
I do want CM on this. I prefer CM to TW, and I can see people who don't use the other TW features extensively benefit from CM. The only TW feature I use extensively is multiwindow, which can sorta be done on CM using Xposed right now (but not as good apparently). The only thing I'm not sure about is how Spen will be affected. I don't really use any of the S-apps, I mainly write on Papyrus and a bunch of other third party apps - which I hope shouldn't be affected?

I completly agree with you.
S Pen Apps are nice, but I don't use them often. I'm using my S Pen to draw, to write things quickly (yeah, an S Pen app but can replaced by an App from the Play Store) and to control easily the Note. That's a lot of good things, but they all can work on CM.
Multi Windows is the problem. Yes, there are few nice apps that can replace it, but far from TW's feature. But i guess that when the developers will want to bring it as an App, they'll to it.

It would probably help you out to go to the Note 3 forums to see how AOSP roms are functioning since they are similar.
Look at that guys:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=diIwfyo4nHQ
I know it's not CM (Omni will probably wont get to our device anytime soon), I just want you to see that it's possible...
Who knows..maybe if CM comes to the TabPro, we might be able to get it since the hardware is practically the same.
Options are always nice. Some people (like me) are considering buy the Note 10.1 instead of the Tab Pro because of the 3gb RAM and because you can get a 32 GB version now. Couldn't care less about the pen! Would very much like some stock ROM options.

Great so find me a software replacement for any app in a floating window, 4 way split screen, a note pad that turns my handwriting into executable information, screen grabs I can easily edit, drag and drop, and a note app and finder that can even search for handwritten text. There is a reason nobody uses aosp or cyanogenmod on the note line up. Because it sucks at replicating touch wiz Very very badly. If all you wanted was a pressure sensitive pen and screen go get a nexus ten and a sketchbook and some pencils. It's the same thing right?

Actually Xposed is fairly close to replicating that multiwindow/floating window situation. The drag and drop screenshot thing is cool, but it is so limited in its use because I can't even paste screenshots on any other apps outside of the S-app world. MAME is strictly a non-profit project. Its main purpose is to be a reference to the inner workings
of the emulated arcade machines. This is done both for educational purposes and for preservation
purposes, in order to prevent many historical games from disappearing forever once the hardware they
run on stops working. Of course, in order to preserve the games and demonstrate that the emulated
behavior matches the original, you must also be able to actually play the games. This is considered
a nice side effect, and is not MAME's primary focus.
Drag and drop text supports any app that uses the android system text copy and paste functions. as for as I can tell. Most text fields take it. And you can share screenshots almost anywhere. And what I meat was that very few people prefer the Hosp roms. Hence the giant number of TW Roms in comparison.
