Front-facing camera quality? - Galaxy S 4 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

We've all debated the quality of the 13 MP rear-shooter and compared it to almost every plausible competitor out there. But how is the front-facing camera? I've yet to see much detail or mention of this. Is it better or the same as the quality of the Galaxy S III at least? It seems that it's usually only Apple's iPhone or HTC's smartphones which put more emphasis and improvements on the optics of their front-facers.

At 2.0 MP its pretty good. Real sharp. Color is nice. Im satisfied

I wasn't talking so much about sharpness, as I was color accuracy, saturation and varying degrees of environmental light performance. The S III was pretty abysmal when it came to image quality, color accuracy and low-light performance on its front-shooter.

Filming with Galaxy S II is awesome!

So I just want to show you filming with my Galaxy S II (my iPod Touch) is awesome.
It focus perfect and I chose to use the torch.
Look at the awesome quality, great for app review like this one.
I never knew a camera with full HD capabilities (1920*1080 resolution) could take such good video. Thanks for sharing.

Indeed it is!
If you are rooted, check Potatoman's awesome work on the camera : http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1104051
I personally use hyperX-'s version of SuperHighBit camera (1080p @ 30MBit ), and it just tops my Sony FHD camera now!
Also, the sound quality is way better with this mod!
Camera with GOOD light is really well. But if there is small light camera SUCKS. Better has Iphone 4S (in dark conditions).
As mentioned above in good light this camera excels in the video department I've had some excellent videos shot in nice bright conditions, in low light conditions you notice the difference as with most cameras.
But as a mobile device it's very good in bright light and the hacked versions are awesome as audio improves compared to stock.
Oh and where's my water is an addictive game!

Look at Iphone 4S night camera test SGS II would have had problems with autofocus and video would be totally blurred. Iphone 4S is crisp here

I heard hacked cameras have worse quality of video (only sound improved). Often they cannot record full hd... don't know it is right or nor but many people complain.

I confirm the complete opposite. The quality is WAY better, namely in night settings. I've been filming Madrid in my trip, at night, and there was nearly no lag, and it was crisp all the time. I recorded at 720p @ 24MBit due to space issues (1080p @ 30MBit eats a LOT of memory).

S3 Camera Quality

Hi everyone. I had the one X but returned it in anticipation for the galaxy s3. I was wondering if anyone that had both phones can comment on the camera quality of both. I've read reviews and it seems like the one X has a better camera with a better aperture of f/2.0, so it has better low light photos.
I wanted to test it out in stores but they are not there yet, so i was wondering if anyone can give impressions of the quality of the s3 camera (and can compare it to the one x shots). I'm still deciding between the 2 phones...
thanks!
I too had the one X but returned and pre-ordered the S3 and got it yesterday.
The two things that I liked better on One X are the camera and the display. IMO camera is noticeably better on One X, especially in low light. Also the camera app on One X is a little bit faster which might be due to the imagesense chip that One X has.
But overall Im happier with S3. Couldnt bare with One X's retarded multi tasking.

S3 vs iPhone
here are 5 comparison shots of the iPhone 4 vs the Galaxy S3. To my eye the samsung lets in more light and it actually sometimes makes the photos contrast too white. But the color reproduction on the samsung is closer to what I see with my eye
Now keep in mind, Samsung/android gives you much greater control over ISO/exposure/etc. These pictures are taken on the default "auto" settings. I think people could make them look a lot better by actually adjusting the iso/exposure/contrast. I'll probably come back on later and compare the iPhone 4, iPhone 4s and the Samsung with adjusted settings later.

It almost looks like the all the iPhone photos were artificially saturated, because it's supposedly better to err on the side of too saturated than "washed out reality", for the average joe.

I'm really interested in your results after the settings. Currently the only thing holding me back from jumping on the galaxy s3 is the camera. But if adjusting the settings can make the camera photos appear better, then i think i'm sold. Please do post them when you do get a chance!
thanks!
Those shots are very helpful... iPhone pics definitely look better on first glance, but the colors are artificial/over-saturated and I think the S3 provides more detail in the shadow. I had a One X, and thought that camera was terrible; everything was overexposed and washed out and if I dropped exposure by one tick it went to far. Definitely more optimistic about trying the camera on my S3 when it comes tomorrow.
Here are some updated shots. I played with the S3 and got the settings I liked. One thing I didn't point out in the first set of pictures is if you zoom in on the pictures you'll notice more detail in the S3 shots, mainly because of the higher pixel count.
I think personally, the s3 camera is quite better. It has more tweaking you can do to get the shots you want. I really love the "Smile Shot" that takes a photo when it detects a smile or the fact you can say "Cheese" and it have take photos.
those are really nice pics
S3 is same sensor as S2 from what I have read. One X is brand new backlit sensor, which is why it does so well in low light conditions. One X camera is best out there right now. And yes the f2.0 wider angle lens is pretty sweet also.
Sent from my HTC One X using XDA
Kind of weird, samsung has a photo relationship with pentax for their SLR's and these comparison pics look a lot like those between pentax and canikon SLR's. On auto settings the pentax/samsung favor darker and less saturated compared to brighter/punchier exposures on auto settings with canon or nikon. All a matter of preference just weird to see the same sort of thing happening here.
Will be fun to play with when I finally upgrade from this cracked captivate

wow i love your shots. THanks so much for doing this. I think in normal conditions from all the reviews and shots i've seen, the galaxy s3's photos look washed out, but it seems like with some settings it can be adjusted for. Does this affect the low light shots? (make them worse?)
I was pretty happy with this one.

Poor Camera performance

Is anyone else disappointed with the camera on the nexus 4? I find I'm getting poorly focused photos for objects at short range.

Hi,
Poor performance, poor quality, poor focus, etc... Maybe a faulty Nexus 4 (I don't know / hardware maybe ).
Take a look here: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2000602 ... Not all the pics are great but... Most are awesome (yeah, it depends mainly of your eyes ).
Seriously not the best cam (software / post-software traitement) but in any case not poor and poor in all circumstance...
Coming from a SGS III (not the best in quality picture but not the last in the course), the Nexus is great! (maybe not in dark place, I agree, besides that it's top!).
And picture quality depends of the photographer (and his eyes) and the subject, the camera settings, etc...
In fact you can try some third apps... I (personnaly) never seen an improvement, on HTC Desire HD, HTC Sensation, Galaxy Nexus, S III, etc... it's not an app which overlay all the post traitement... I mean hardware->software, just some sharpness, colours, effects, etc... it's just in post traitement (you can do the same thing on your computer).
I can understand you're disapointed, but you're coming from what? I mean what smartphone? Real camera? You compare about what?
Post some pics and we'll see if it's poor or not...
And it's a Nexus not an extreme camera-phone, if you just buy a Nexus for his quality pics... You purchased a Nexus for anything other than his camera (or for just that)
we can speak endlessly about the picture quality of the Nexus 4, it depends on too many factors...
Not to be rude but... with no more explanation...

I find the camera on the SGSII to be much better than that on the Nexus 4.
Here is a picture that I took which I'm a bit disappointed with. It is predominantly the focus, though perhaps on this one there's a bit of camera shake.

The info in the link says it's not compatible with the Z5. So, I didn't give it a try.
I'm skeptical about how well it would work given the Z5 only gives 3rd party apps access to 8MP of resolution. I would expect higher detailed results from the higher resolution available to the native app, than the multi-exposure stitching scheme this app is using.
At the moment only for nexus devices I think so....

I'm not so sure - this app definitely does suffer at the hands of Sony's brutal noise reduction. But particularly using the front camera, I noticed an increase in quality using this app. Here is my test (sorry about the selphy images but I noticed more of a marked difference using the front camera!

Lol, your eye is brown in one shot green in the other
I disagree, quality the same, maybe slightly worse due to some interpolation going on (causing slight blurriness in details) this was most noticeable when photographing objects with text in the shot.
Manual mode still produces the best photos on this sensor/Sony camera software combo, but it could be much better without the Sony camera software - jpg algorithm.

Photo quality

Say "cheese", then rate this thread to express how photos taken with the Samsung Galaxy S10 come out. A higher rating indicates that photos offer rich color (without over-saturating), sharp detail (with all subjects in-focus), and appropriate exposure (with even lighting).

Coming from an iphone 8 plus...
The quality is good but disappointing. I cannot believe DXOMARK gave it 109 rating and 114 in photo-shooting...
I understand that HDR+ process is really good, and that the bokeh effect is "realistic"... but the telephoto lens is just awful. On iphone 8 plus the telephoto lens gave me a beautiful sense of profundity and natural colors, here the bokeh is non existent and I find the image "cold".
Also, there is a lack of fine detail and sharpness noticeable in almost all pics.
Can't believe that iPhone 8 plus makes better photos....
All friends Said that iPhone pics are not good... Since series 8
The tele lens is not that advanced or given a thought about, they were mostly focused on the regular and the UW lens...the pics from those 2 lenses are a tid bit over exposed but I rather have them over exposed than under and get noise in post.

Coming from a Pixel 3 I'm very happy with the S10+. The color accuracy is much better in my experience so far and I find the three lenses much more useful than a single lens. Coming from pixel 3 XL an iPhone X's max the front camera is the worse camera on any phone super soft and colours are very flat. I can't wait for the pixel camera mod for the s10 plus and least the front camera can be usable

Coming from the m20p I'm devided. For bokeh and portrait i miss the p20p...the monochrome really did some wonders.
HDR is not bad at all, but HONESTLY overall I don't get the DXO result, and I was expecting something much better. Curious to see what the p30p is going to to go for. Huawei doesn't really sleep these years ( I've read the specs of the new p30p, but everyday usage is what its all about ..)

Pixel 3 was so good in low light. There is no match right now. Specially that night sight mode. Maybe we are dissappointed by s10 because all the reviewers were saying so many good things and DXO mark gave very good score. The hype was good. Now i think reviewers were paid by Samsung.
I really expect Samsung to release software update for the camera. However video recording is on par with pixel. Screen is just superb.

Honestly I don't miss my 3XL or the camera at all but that's my preference. As for reviews the ones I saw pretty much said it was a draw between the two for the rear cameras with the Samsung being more versatile. I do agree with that however I like the color accuracy more with the S10. The Pixel went to the cool side too much for me and made the whites look blueish and the blacks having that crushed look from too much contrast. That I wasn't happy with and that was with three new units. Yes the night sight is miles ahead on the Pixel but I take far better photos of the moon and stars with the Samsung. The front camera is good enough for my use, I rarely use it. I don't take much video but the ones I did look great. Again this is my experience and preference out of the 125 or so photos I've taken so far.
Front camera is actually surprisingly bad (even compared to the Note 9). Any bright background colors cause blooming issues.
Good examples shown here (when he's getting out of the car at the beginning, and inside the café at 2:00).
I noticed it on mine when taking a selfie with a light behind me. Picture was definitely worse than the Note 9

So far I love the cameras, all of them. The clarity, especially on the back cameras, are super amazing.
I would like to know more about pictures of people/animals on the move. I remember that the S7 did not leave my daughter's hands static while capturing her, causing those blurred hands. Already on the iPhone 8 or XR I can easily do. How is the performance of Samsung in this question today? Child and dog are never stopped for photos
