Cyanogenmod vs Modified Stock FW - which do you use? - Galaxy Note 10.1 General

Hey everyone,
I didn't want to be disrespectful and post in a developers thread specific to a custom firmware, nor CM, so I wanted to start this thread to get some input. There are a lot of great roms out, ARHD among others, which are modifications of the default stock Samsung firmware.
There is also the possibility to run the latest version of Android in stock AOSP by using Cyanogenmod 10.1.
Historically I have always used CM10.1 or AOKP on my devices as I switch frequently, and they have become the "brands" I know, and I like how it is not bloated. However, on buying my Note I thought it might be worth checking out stock based firmwares, especially for the IR blaster which doesn't work in CM10.1.
Has anyone here alternated between them? What made you switch to one or the other? I'm curious to get some input from others on why they made the decision they did specifically for this device.
Thanks!
EDIT: It seems most of the note features work fine in CM10.1 as well - are there any other things I am missing out on if I go CM10.1, other than the IR Blaster? I'm sure it is just a novelty that will get old quick, but still. Given I haven't used stock extensively I am not sure if I am missing out on anything else.

There are plenty of threads like this around.. I prefer stock because of the IR blast and mulit window feature.. also stock is louder with the noozxoide mod.. The reasons for CM10 is More customization, its faster than stock, Themes, and its 4.2...

Thanks - if you have links to the others I would like to give them a read, but I couldn't find any direct comparisons on XDA, especially for this tablet. The most I found was a "what firmware do you use" for the SGS2.

Im not about to look for them but here is 1...
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2226379

Im not sure if cyanogenmod support the small apps ( dual or cascade ) . Im using custom stock fimware on my sgn10.1 such as Android Revolution HD, to fully use the advantage of multitasking.
But for my old handphone, I prefer cyanogenmod. You know why.

I would stick with stock. I think the cm team does agreat job but when it comes to my note 10.1 they lack ,there is something very buggy about them when it comes to 2d and 3d rendering this is the one thing I have noticed that are not based off stock roms. Things like sketch book video playback and gaming seem to fluctuate in fps but try it out and see for your self, other then that cm is a great

Stock ROM (CMC5), only rooted, not even DeOdexed (I'd rather have speed vs. themeing).

same, rooted stock for me. CM10 is nice, but the lack of multi window is the killer for me. For me, modified roms dont have anything special to make me want to switch to them.

This is what makes the Note 10.1 so special... Even the ICS rom it came with out of the box was close to what I wanted and needed. People only started complaining when others were getting JB and they weren't.
Add root access Samsung and it would be (almost) perfect - there's always something you want or need that won't be in the stock rom.
So saying, I'm still gonna play around with custom roms too... Never being satisfied and chasing perfection is part of being human, that's why XDA was created....

Stock is the best... !

With cm10.1 my benchmark is 4700 ish, with stock rom I run about 6200 I think thats is proof enough witch is better not to mention the whole multi Window that I find I use a lot on my tablet unlike my phone the tablet has enough screen space to appreciate it.

I am now running X-Note Zero Edition from http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2236328
I am quite pleased with it once I ran the compatibility pack and battery mod (%). It runs quite well and I have no complaints, other than a rather bulky notification pull-up bar. Performance is pretty good. As another poster indicated, though, there is a slight delay when switching between apps using the pop-up menu. Battery life seems a bit better after a few days usage too.

I own many different tabblets, on this one its perfect out of the box, no wifi, no sod, no market or any other weird problems. when you do get one that runs fine then your battery drains fast. Always a trade off, so I go with stock and no root. Seems root is causing problems and now no root and no problems.

Rooting any device won't ever cause any problems that aren't user error.

You could do a poll to see the usage of both (stock or CM) in numbers
I use stock, Touchwiz get's boring really fast but it's more usable than anything else (ok, almost? )

Yes. This is the only reason i stick with touchwiz. If CM support the same thing, then I'll say goodbye to touchwiz like i did to my ex-Note 1.

I used CM on all of my other devices but have had no reason to use it on the Note 10.1. I just rooted the stock ROM and have not really missed CM much on the Note.

well, i'd rather use the stock rom than the CM, i have tried the CM10.1 but you know, the Multi Windows and hand writing and the IR blaster had been missed, so, after all, i have to go back to stock rom, ít' simply, a bit slower but, well, it come with full features

Three-way ROM comparison - Transformer

All,
I've been trying to decide what rom to use on my transformer, so I took a look at the three roms: Revolver 3.2.1, Revolution HD 1.2.2, and Prime 1.9.
I used the basic information in each of their threads, and looked back through each of their change logs to get the data for this spreadsheet.
Take a look, and if changes need to be made, let me know.
Asus Transformer ROM Comparison (Google Docs)
Thanks for doing this! Been wanting to update, but not sure which to go with.
Googledocs is blocked at my work, but I'll definitely be looking at this tonight.

That's exactly why I gathered the info. It's kind of difficult to assess which ROM is better based on screenshots and manually switching between threads. I'm currently running Revolution, but based on what I've found, Prime may be the way to go.
Are you sure that Revolver 3.5 isn't adfree? Looking at the hosts file you can notice quite a lot addresses being redirected to localhost
Revolver is adfree..
Revolver has an option to automatic battery calibration and mobile data in his Revolver Parts app!
Revolution was updated
Prime too

Revolution is going to join prime and revolver on the new base soon maybe another comparison on the first version of all 3 on the new base would be best ?

No offense to the op but the comparison is useless without actual long term experience with the roms. Revolver is way more stable and smoother than the other two. I dont care what the spec sheets say. I care more for experience and practicality.
I honestly can't tell the difference between prime and revolver on stability. I switch between them after a couples of testing when they release a new one. Gave up on revolution long ago. They are all based of the same asus rom so unless the dev does something really bad then there will not be much different except for looks.
I did more than just test. Ive benen using them in practical situations. I know they all are based on stock but revolver is way smoother.

I think he means instead of benchmarking and stability tests etc he actually uses them in everyday situations where faults and bugs are prone to show.
Atleast i think thats what he meant there both a way of testing but i guess he feels one is better than the other?

ive stuck with Revolver aswell. the Revolver parts is a nice addition and the extra support with the otas.
Prime was similar in running so it was just the extras on Revolver that swayed me.
If anyone of them could fix the browser bugs (blocky page loads in particular) then it would put them clear of the rest. I know Opera doesnt do it but its way to slow to load. Not any of the devs faults but its frustrating.

Opera first load all the data of the site, after that it displays it. That`s why it is behaving slow. Stock browser loads the data while you are viewing it, that are the blocks you are talking about. So, it is not a bug, Opera is not slower than stock browser, it is behaving an other way.
Its not a bug, it's a feature

Benchmarking, stability tests, etc. tells you nothing about how the rom will act in practical situations in everyday life. This is why I generally don't do these tests. I would flash a rom and then use it for a couple weeks, sometimes trying to push it to its limits.
Revolver really is much more stable and runs smoother than the other two roms. In fact, opera seems to be behaving in revolver while it would stop logging me in in the other two roms.
Like I said, I don't care about the list of features comparing the 3 roms. And I don't care about benchmark and stability test results. I care about how the rom acts in everyday situation.
These test results and feature comparisons are little better than those unboxing videos. You can't know a product's full potential after spending 2 minutes with it right after you unbox it. That's for ipad 2 users, where you have to lower your IQ by 50 points to use.
What's worse, I've seen unboxing videos where people actually conclude whether a product is good or bad based on a mere 5 minutes "test runs" with the product. Take most of the reviews by tech websites of the transformer, for example. Almost all of them go through their reviews completely ignoring the huge advantage of having the OPTION to turn your tablet into a notebook for productivity. In at least one review, I ever saw the reviewer say "since the ipad 2 doesn't have a keyboard dock, it's not fair to include the transformer keyboard dock in the review..."
Anyway, the point is in order to really know how good a rom is, just flash it and use it for a week or so. These benchmarks and stability tests are almost useless.
Edit.
But then again, since most people think a "public option" means slavery of the American populace, it doesn't surprise me that most people would see the keyboard dock OPTION as asus' way of enslaving the world population. Probably why they keep ignoring the keyboard dock of the TF.
I've used both Revolver and Prime, but I think I actually crashed more in Revolver... granted, that was like Revolver 2.something, but I think Prime is more stable. However, I do like the Revolver OTA update a lot, and I'm probably gonna flash Revolver once I get my new usd card. Prime is working great, though, so I'm not sure if I really wanna go through the trouble.. haha. If only there was one clear winner! Damn the many options!
nice comparison.. just a question, what does Ad-free mean? Do the Prime or Revolver Roms show some kind of Ad?
About bloatware.. what's exactly treated as bloatware? For example, I don't want most of Asus apps, but the mail client or the note taking app included in the latest update are quite nice apps, also the asus mail widget.
I may try it myself, I know... I really wish my B80 was rootable Hope to have it soon.
Stock untouched ROMs have Ad's
These don't - and there is a program called Ad-Free you can use on a Rooted Stock ROM
----
I've read this thread and decided to go for Revolver based on the comments - so far a nice quick smooth bug free ROM
I used to flash custom Windows Mobile ROMs a while back and found every single one had something broken on it and ended up back on stock -but that was porting 6.5 onto 6.1 Mobiles so ...
Although I am liking this ROM and have found no faults, something makes me want 100% stock TF again
I think maybe because it is still brand new..

OK! I'm sick of it.

After tried alot of roms out there (almost every rom), I'm sick of it. Back home and clean it up is the best idea. Why? Fully function and stable enough. Just back to stock 4.0.4. Feel that it is snappier than before. Clean up the junk file in system. Don't mod it, just make it simple and stock. Change a font to make it less boring. That it! Way faster than CM9.1. Sony didn't do a really bad job!
Edited: I change my mind now. Using CM10 again. Because I love pure Android and it's much smoother.
Tried too, look very fancy. went back to gb for less incompatibilties issue and more free ram after mass clearing stock bloatwares.
I'm with you, back to stock ICS, install only notification toggle and walkman, nothing else. The phone is stable like rock and fully working. I'm happy I went back to stock.
After all, most ROMs are just stock ROMs with modifications that a mildly experienced user can do himself. Android is all about personalisation and half the fun is doing it on your own –IMHO.
Only FXP is providing original development but Cyanogen is not really my taste, Sony firmwares are better looking –again, IMHO!

Free RAM would be an issue only if you could literally take it out and play with it.
Android is filling up RAM in order to be snappier and more responsive. The fact that in some occasions it is not snappy, has little to do with the amount of free RAM and that is a very common misconception among users.

I was impressed when I was on the stock ROM with it's speed but for me modding CM is far simpler and find it to be just as fast after tweaking it to my liking, plus it doesn't come with Carrier IQ.
Ive tried them all and the most stable with customizable features is miui v4 which I tweaked for more space/ram.. Everything works and its fast..

Ah, didn't know that.
Of course, as the name implies, it is the carrier who collects the information after all.
Anyway, I find people posting what they eat, where and who they are with on social media much more disturbing than anonymous data collected by Carrier IQ!
But let's get back on-topic now! Thank you!
Stockroms are cool, i miss in CM Timescape and the great Social features. But Stock GB (or moddet GB) is a way faster than ICS or JB. No load time by opening a email, in ICS or JB 2-3 sec wait time, in GB no waiting time
Not sure what people are doing with custom rom. Tweak for more ram? I found that most custom rom out there have less than 180 mb of free ram. For me stock rom no bloatware. 230 mb of free ram after restart. About 190 mb after using the phone.
If only there's a way to dual boot to choose GB or ICS.
My GB setup in signature. For me it's awesome.
And I deleted 80 system apps, RAM is always around 200mb free .
MIUI V4 stock based is better imho. If you don't mind a bit slower performance that is.

Jelly bean miui

So I have only seen a few jb versions of miui out and they were not very good. I am wondering if anyone would be interested of I was to bring one to the table? If I can get enough interest in it I can try working my magic on it. I have played around with it some already and it is not too bad. Sluggish in some areas but I think with a week or so of work it could be killer.

If you can get it to be stable, it'd be very cool. The only bad thing about GB MIUI is that none of the themes online are for GB anymore
They still have gb themes online. They are not updating as much but they are still there. Also I know that you want jb miui and have already put you into the tally pot even before you said anything. The jelly bean I have on my phone has been rock solid so that is not an issue it just lags sometimes mostly on the lockscreen and that weird second launcher thing they added. Although I am sure I can cure most of those issues with a little work. I was using for a couple of weeks before I started working on these current projects.
I will give you a copy of what I was using if you would like it had tronits first kernel on it. So far the only 4.1.2 rom that could run it that I know of and seeder. I will update the kernel and put in crossbreeder then upload it for you.

I think Tronit just updated his kernel with SBC
Yes he updated yesterday with sbc. What I was using was his first kernel. I now have jb miui up and running and playing with tweaks to see what will give the best bang for the buck. So far it has blackdone 2.1r1 sbc and crossbreeder installed. Tried xlound/bravia2 and that was a no go also MPEngine would not work either. I am checking out build.prop mods now and then init.d scripts afterwards. I want this to run like dirty diablo but right now it is just not there. The lockscreen is the worst. The lag is still there but it is usable unlike before where you never wanted to have the screen lock. Also most of the android keyboard lag is gone so that is a plus. Then last is to try and do something about this darn battery drain. Like most jb roms it sucks the juice like a top fuel dragster.
Keep your eye out there just may be a new jb 4.2.1 MIUI coming to a server near you.

ROM for the GF's phone

I'm looking for opinions on about three different ROM's for my girlfriend. And I'm only posting this in a new thread because most the other ones I see are 2 years old and therefore highly outdated.
TN Elousions 2, the Team No Name ROM, and Thundershock.
Now, she wants to have a UI fairly close to stock. We tried one with ICS and she hated it. Maybe it was the ROM. I'm not sure. It was all blue and white menus and she said it was difficult to navigate. We went back to stock.
Anyway, she is having constant problems with her phone with reboots, apps not working properly, battery life, etc. She wants to switch to an iFail errr iPhone and I'm trying to convince her that Android is the place to be.
She uses the GPS function on her phone for navigation a lot, so GPS MUST work... She uses other apps such as pinterest, facebook, fitness pal, etc... But GPS is the main thing we need..
So I'm looking for opinions on those three roms or even any others that are stable enough and fast enough to show her that an Android can be improved even when it's 2 years old and counting.

MikG 3.11 offers a UI very close to the stock Sprint ROM but also permits quite a bit of user customization. GPS performance on this ROM is solid. Unfortunately, there has not been any development on this ROM since March 2012; but the ROM is solid. You can download MikG 3.11 at http://themikmik.com/showthread.php?10338-MikG-v3-11-3-9-2012 (be sure to get the Full Wipe version).
I also recommend uding ca1ne's Classic Sense Kernel with SBC for improved battry perfomance. You can download the kernel at http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1557248 (be sure to get the SBC version).
Be sure to perform a nandroid backup and wipe the cache, Dalvik cache, and system before flashing the ROM. You can flash the kernel as soon as the ROM flash is completed.

Well if you choose a sense 3.0 there is a nice purple skin I can hook you up with. As nice as tnn roms are I would not suggest it being it is far from stock style. Yet if she is thinking Icrap then it does have that kind of UI.

I have been using Thundershock for about 2 weeks now with very few issues, gps works great (used it quite a bit) .You can always change appearance by using launchers, I use go launcher
I was using InFaMoUs 2.1 (http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1836346) for a while and really liked it. It had a very stock feel to it. I felt like my phone performed faster under most conditions using that rom. The only thing I didnt like about the rom was that i was constantly getting low memory notifications. I think that the sense roms take up a little more space, but i think the real culprit was one of the games that i installed was growing in size every day untill it took up all the room i had left on the phone.

Man if you had that in purple I would be all set (she's a huge fan of purple, not so much on pink)! I'll have to show her and see what she thinks...

Custom roms and lag speed for an artist

Hello, I have a GN10.1 2014 and I was an ex owner of a GN10.1 2012, my question is quite simple, does the custom roms actually get rid of the lag when you draw ? I will be more specific, I didn't had any kind of lag on my old GN and now with the new screen (double the pixels) I have to use the 2x mode to draw smoothly... which mean that it's like drawing with the old one.
That occur with Layerpaint and Layerpaint HD, I own these 2 on the old one and I have to say I barely use them now because of that responsiveness. Sketchbook is cooler but of course (and I guess you noticed) it's zoomed in.
Can anyone confirm that it's getting better by installing a custom rom specifically to draw ? I don't want to lose the warranty (knox), because here now they check if you installed a custom rom or not...
Thanks in advance !

Ive been using both since 4 months, I have to say that I dont see any diference... obviously, if you want your tablet much faster than before, you need to mod your rom, is that why I have a custom rom, modified by me. (Just in a few things)
Is almost like my desktop, I just drawed that faster, without zooming, with my mamboo stylus actually, I prefeer to draw in this tablet than my computer... (just drawing and sketch's)
Greetings!
ROM: xKat 3.0
Kernel: Xluco kernel V1
Nevermind, I found it ~.~ *

if it helps, i am on a custom rom and no lag with snote that i have experienced (have only had this a few weeks). I was recently makin a list of the plugins and various settings for my n64 emulator, for each game i have, and i had both snote and the emulator multiwindowed to make the task easier. Both apps ran well and no lag. Games were still playable and snote very responsive.

yes exactly one in my sig. I use my tab so much that my phone (also in sig) battery life is around 3-4 days. I charge my tab every night though.
For drawing on Note 10.1 2014 edition, I recommend Artflow studio. I get no lag whatsoever using that.

I have just read the posts corresponding to the ROM and Kernel you are using... And I'm convinced! I should install this on my tablet.
But first... Can you please tell me if I should install the kernel first and then the ROM, or is it the other way around?
I don't want to make any mistakes.
Thanks in advance!
You have to turn off the force gpu rendering, ull see a notable change in how smooth it is. Custom rom would help, gets rid of the crapware which eats up system resources and slowing down processor speed overall.

Flash rom see how you like then test out kernels you might want. You want to know the rom is working for you first then you can jump into adding other stuff, you know.
