Hi all,
Choose your favorite ROM and Kernel !!!!
I have created the GRAND ROM Survey for the N7100 and N7105, using both the ROM and Kernel list from sunny2303's pinned [INDEX] ROM and Kernel Repository N7100 thread, and my own review of the N7105 Android Development thread, and published it here:
I have sunny2303 to thank for the effort in compiling the N7100 list. Please visit his thread in the link above to get your ROMs and Kernels, and don't forget to thank him as well.

CHANGELOG:
2013-06-03
Posted v3.0 of Survey, providing fully integrated ROM & Kernel selection with versions and selectable dates for Nightlies ROM & Kernels. Includes a ranking for Screen on Time (SOT) to evaluate overall Battery Life.
Similar statistic as v2.0, but provides insight into a match of ROM+Kernel and its corresponding expected battery life.
2013-05-01
Posted v2.0 of Survey, providing Version selection and quantitative results. The selection grid provides a value of 0 to 5 per feature, and this is summed to give a value for each response.
2013-04-28
I finally completed the master index containing 55 ROMs with all their versions, and correlated to their release dates.
A total of 400 versions were logged, with 202 unique version numbers. This will be used to maintain stacked data selection for the new survey version.

Highest Ranked ROMs based on Feature Score (lowest = 0, highest =45)
This chart shows the SCORE GIVEN by all submissions for the feature ranking, which in effect allows the ranking of "Best"ness of a ROM.
This gives a more ACCURATE representation of what users REALLY THINK of a ROM.
The score is the AVERAGE of all scores for any given ROM Version, so you may see multiple points per ROM. This means users have rated multiple versions of the ROM
You may rollover your mouse on the score points to see score by version on the live chart link:
Link: Live score chart with rollover values display
This Chart shows the TOTAL ENTRIES per ROM, and does not consider the feature score.
This chart simply shows all submissions per ROM without considering version number or the Features Score.
For example, if there were 10 entries for ROM-A v1 and 5 entries for ROM-A v2, total entries are counted as 15.
Sortable Individual Features Score Table
This table allows drill down by ROM for any of the scores in the survey.

2013-06-03
This summary is planned for monthly updates. Since it is currently beta, I will update more frequently for testing.
Current Top 3 for Kernels (May 2013):
1. Perseus
2. Redpill
3. N.E.A.K Note II
Current Top 3 for ROMs (May 2013 result)
1. Assassin
2. BoBCaTROM
3. PhoeniX
267 responses for May 2013.
Methodology
Description of Features for Scoring:
Default Look - the default themes, wallpapers etc that come with the ROM. This is a subjective measure but you can give your rating
Installation - feature richness of the installation process. Full selection with Aroma should be rated a "5"
Included Kernel(s) - if the ROM comes only with Stock kernel, it will be a "1". For each additional Kernel included, add 1, for a max score of 5.
Slimness - AOSP based ROMs should be either "4" or "5". ROMs which are close to Stock should be rated based on how you think the chef removed bloatware
Stability - does the ROM FC a lot?
Battery Life - If you can get at least 3.5 hrs Screen On Time, it will be a "3"
Speedy Updates - If the ROM is updated at least once a month, it should get a "3". Nightlies should get a "5"
Developer Responsiveness - is the dev friendly and responds quickly? Daily responses from the dev should get a "5".
Overall Impression - Your overall impression and rating of the ROM
There are 2 presentations of results list:

Most Popular
The first one, used by the Most Popular ROMs bar charts, are a simple count of all entries of a particular ROM. Ie, Column E "Choose Your ROM from dropdown list". It does not distinguish between different versions of a ROM. More entries means the count gets higher.
Features Score
The second one, used by the ROM Features score Table and Graph, is the average of all scores per ROM Version. Ie Columns G to O are summed, result displayed in Column Q "Summary Score". Due to the nature of how Google Forms inputs entries into the sheet, I need to manually update the formula for every entry. I do it several times daily, so by day's end, all submissions should have the Summary Score available.
NOTE: My timezone is +8 UTC (Kuala Lumpur) so please consider this if you are looking for the score update for your submission.
This score is a better indicator of the "quality" of a ROM, as it is the aggregated quantitative feedback from all users.
A pivot table sorts by ROM Name as Row1, Version as Column 1 and Summary Score as values. The Summary Score values are displayed by the AVERAGE pivot table function in Google Sheets.
This is then displayed in 2 ways.
The first is simply a Table display of the same pivot table. This is done to allow faster sort and view of the pivot data.
The second one is where it is displayed as a chart with the AVERAGE score on left axis, ROM Name on bottom axis, and data points of the Value are plotted.
ROMs which have data for different versions will have multiple dots along the same axis but at different score points.
Hope that clarifies how the results were obtained.
NOTE: My timezone is +8 UTC (Kuala Lumpur) so please consider this if you are looking for the score update for your submission.

But that is probably due to duration of the thread as well, since earlier threads usually have more responses. This aims to provide an easy to read statistic, with also a "I like x feature" list.
Reading 100k replies is no fun and this is a concise summary.
Give it a try.
Is there one for launchers?
I know I saw one on the general section but this kind of things would be great.

All ICS ROMs Benchmarked
Any regular visitors to this thread can't have failed to notice the big changes in the spreadsheet. In particular I've been studying the effect of the kernel the ROM developer includes. If you look at column H, you will see whether I recommend flashing another kernel to improve performance at stock speeds.
REMEMBER: Performance is not everything! Many custom kernels provide extra features!
If you do decide to switch kernels, and only desire stock speeds and a reduced feature set, I recommend two kernels in this post.
If you are new to this stuff read this.
SUMMARY OF RESULTS
#1st place: Pixel ROM 1.72
#2nd place: CyberGR-MOD|NS.NGN ICS v10 HYBRID
#3rd place: MIUI Catalyst 2.4.6
#4th place: AOSP+ N.5
#5th place: [MIUI][2.4.6] Oodie pRiMe rOcket fUeled

Thanks to all the developers.
Testing Methodology
Each ROM is clean installed, allowed its own default settings, then all benchmark software is installed and run once the system is settled. I also perform one screen off screen on, just out of habbit (this used to resolve a graphics bug in gingerbread, which I'm not even sure exists in ICS). All results are recorded in the spreadsheet. Then I restart in recovery, wipe cache and dalvic (thanks morfic for dalvic wiper) and install morfic's T132-I kernel. Reboot, use nstools to select performance (default I/O scheduler for morfic's kernel is deadline). Reperform all benchmarks, recording them in the spreadsheet. The calculation for the overall CPU RAM I/O and GRAPHICS scores is identical to the one I use in my kernel benchmarking spreadsheet. Please refer to that thread for more detail. However, there is one difference. Quadrant behaves very differently in different ROMs depending on what graphics tweaks they incorporate. As such, no Quadrant scores are used in this ROM benchmarking study. For more details, see under 'Graphics' below.
The final step was to average out the results of both kernel scores, and ranking on that basis. Some would say that they are best ranked by looking at T132 scores only. I would say that is a fair point, and definitely worth consideration.
There are two reasons I incorporate the default kernel score:
1) Overall scores have a worst case scenario accuracy of within 2% of the true mean due to variability in the benchmarks (more detail on how I obtain this figure is available in my kernel benchmarking thread). For normally distributed data (which we can safely assume these benchmarks produce) averaging two sets of results will result in doubling the accuracy to within 1% of the true mean, making the ranking more reliable.
2) Combining the default kernel Scores for ROMs that used a poor performing kernel, or selected bad governor/scheduler combinations by default will suffer as a consequence. These problems can be solved if the user flashes their own preferred kernel and/or adjusts the kernel settings. However, many new users will not perform this step. For that reason, I want to give a score that at least somewhat reflects the performance as the developer intended.
-Graphics
One of the early findings is selecting force GPU rendering in the developer options improves 2D performance, in Quadrant only. Also, and only in Quadrant, 3D performance can be improved by deleting or moving /system/lib/egl/libGLES_android.so using root explorer or equivalent. These tweaks/hacks do not seem to affect other benchmarks in the slightest.
Because of the bizarre effects of these tweaks on Quadrant scores, I have removed them from the formula that calculates the overall GFX score, and this in turn impacts the overall average score. In short, it makes comparing each ROM's score fairer.
You can see evidence of how the graphics tweaks make Quadrant behave differently at the bottom of the spreadsheet, highlighted in light red. The host ROM for this particular comparison was DianXin or DX ROM for short. This is a reference to a post I make in DX ROMs thread, where I first decide that removing Quadrant is the best option: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=22323688&postcount=194
-Android 4.0.1
These ROMs (at the bottom of the spreadsheet, highlighted in light red) were based on early maguro ports provided by koush. I have left them in, because although they are difficult to compare to 4.0.3 builds with the correct drivers and whatnot, they do compare to each other in one important respect: the kernel. One is stock, the other is built by eugene373 (galaxy nexus/nexus s dev.) Using eugene373's kernel, CPU, I/O, and Graphics were all raised to a high standard that is on a par, or above some of the current ROMs. This goes to show that a customised kernel can offer great benefits, even on a ported ROM.
-Android 4.0.4
As of the 5th of February, my table contains all the ICS ROMs that are listed in the XDA forums. There was only one 4.0.4 version at the time, and this was the best performing in the benchmarks. When the source code is released, I'm sure many ROMs will update. At this point they will benefit from increased RAM scores and javascript performance. If all the ROMs scores improve by the same proportion, the rankings will not be affected. I will attempt to included major releases, but I will not reperform these tests every time there is a new nightly.

Don't you think "popularity" is going a little too far? It will definitely lead to fights...all the devs are good and I don't think prominence is a good indicator of a good rom
But it's up to you

Personally, benchmarks are very misleading... Some of the most stable and well developed roms don't get the greatest scores because they weren't made with benchmarks in mind.

just remember, popular doesnt mean better. but to get angry at the truth(whatever it might be) is just silly. its lies that you should be upset with.
Where's Peter Alfonso's ROM? Bugless Beast is a mainstream rom, second only to Cyanogenmod in scope and breadth.. The ROM thread is in the General forum, because he links to his page at Rootzwiki, but it's a more prominent ROM than many you've listed.

What base rom is that miui v4 based on?
First of all, wonderfull kernel. It rocks on stock rom LRK. Really the best kernel I've ever tested. Thank you very much g.lewarne for sharing your work with us.
But I have one question, maybe someone can explain this:
I don't really understand what does Voltgroups are used for. I mean what is the difference between groups ? Is there a better group for overclocking, such things...
Thanks

From what I recall in the original thread, Gavin explained there are three voltage groups A, B and C. There is only one on your Note, and it is dependent on the hardware of the phone. I have B which seems to be relatively stable (hope I don't jinx myself). You cannot change the voltage group.
Gavin used this information to set voltages for each CPU by gathering info from many users in each group. Some groups require higher minimum voltage than others.
If you search the HydraCore development thread and look at the first three or four posts that match you should find Gavin's very good explanation - he is a great explainer. :good:

precisely correct!
Each Note seems to contain one of 3 motherboard / cpu revisions. The kernel is able to detect which version is present, and selects the appropriate cpu voltage table for it. As Tempus said, you cannot change voltage groups, the information is there simply to aid myself in voltage adjustments.
Originally it was implemented so I could gather stability reports from many users with different versions. Since I have a Group B i was only ever able to test voltages for Group B phones. Once we knew thow the groups worked, other users were then able to experiment with Tegrak overclock is finding the lowest stable voltages, and over time i built up a pretty good spreadsheet of voltage groups / frequencies and stable minimum voltages.
I then simply increased the average minimum voltages a little (for stability) and put the tables in the kernel.
Since then, there isnt an awful lot of need for knowing the voltage groups, but its a neat little feature so i kept it
:good:
It does have perhaps one useful feature for the users, if you do as stated in my Kernel thread OP and install STD first (as this will work for everyone) you can determine the likelyhood of you being able to run the OC/UV kernel
If you have a Group A it is unlikely the OC kernel will work stably for you (but it does for some)
If you have a Group B it is highly likely that the OC kernel will work for you without stablilty issues
If you have a Group C is is almost guranteed than you can run OC without any problems
anagin, each phone is different and ymmv

Thansk for the answer.
In fact, I've searched the Hydracore thread and even the whole forum but I didn't manage to find something really clear about these volt groups.
I figure that the lower voltage the hardware needs, the better it will be for overclocking but I don't know wich group needs less or higher voltage. In fact is it worth or not to use the OC version with for example group A, or it isn't because the CPU overheat and slow down frequency by itself.
Edit: just saw you response Gavin, thanks for the explanation. So, to conclude, for common user like me, if the kernel is working without problems or FC, I don't really have to bother much about these groups

To answer your question the best governors and schedulers are the kernel defaults
OnDemand and Noop.
OnDemand is a tuned version, and for me gives the best battery life and real world performance
I would also rate governors as such
OnDemand > PegasusQ > Adaptive > Everything else
and schedulers
Noop > SIO > Deadline > Everything else

[quote name="JellyKitkatLoli" post=60504903]Since there's so much kernel talk on this thread I am just going to sum this for once and all at least of today.
Disclaimer : The organization Performance>Battery goes by how it is right from the box, No kernel APPs, no anything, just defult settings the kernels come with and what you should expect from those, however they are also a great guideline to know what you're going to get primarily, even after tweaking, This is based on My experience along with other User's from the Kernel's respective threads and from different ROM threads.
Best performance : https://www.androidfilehost.com/?fid=95916177934546156 And in case you're doubting here's a little peek from AnTuTu, Remember no tweaks
[Just for Reference, Stock is around 45k~46k.] , Daily usage is a bit faster too along with gaming, I suggest to add gboost and usbfast charge. However the battery life is like I've said down below IS lower than what it normally COULD be under the right tweaks [Compared to STOCK] but it still is a monstrous battery life (Compared to the other devices on the market hehe ), and if you LOVE [every other Kernel will only be less by what? 0.1 MS? This is for the powerusers] foresaid stuff such as gaming and multitasking this is the right choice .

Pick what you think is best for YOU, I have sorted it out based on performance > battery life (Furthermore all have great performance, SD Exceeds at that though.
My favorite Kernels Would be; Skydragon as I like squeezing my performance to the limit,Lyapota's kernel as it's working great overall but it can be iffy, BeyondStock since it's just the best solution for a roadwarrior and back2basic.
I would do the amount of bugs user's find and encounter however it's very user specific and mileage may vary, So sorting the kernels and organizing them by battery and performance is the best. [/QUOTE]

Battery saving tips....
for those wanted to squeeze as much juice as they can out of our m8's.
In accounts and sync go to google and uncheck any syncs you don't need,
In developer options uncheck show animations and allow mock locations,
In display and gestures uncheck ambient display you can also turn off motion gestures if you don't need them and then of auto brightness,
set your brightness manually and try to keep it below 30%
Set screen off time out to 30 seconds or less.
In sound settings uncheck pocket mode, sounds and vibrate.
Turn off auto sync and auto rotate.
use HTC power saver, most of the time performance is perfectly adequate unless playing high end games in which case to can turn it off,
Set GPS to device only not battery saving google messed that up lol.
You can use app ops to deny wake up on syncing apps like google play services facebook and google + ect.
And of course use greenify to hibernate games and apps that are not in constant use,
it's not wise to hibernate sync apps like google+ and facebook and google services this leads to excessive wakelocks,
It's also not wise to hibernate system apps unless it's apps you can download from the playstore and they're not important.

Hello and welcome!
This morning I began wandering the XDA ZUK Z2 forums, looking at all these new threads and posts. I'm really impressed with all the progress for the Z2 that developers have been making lately. So I decided to try a few new ROMs.
I have always found really interesting to test new ROMs, set them up, install everything back and then use the ROM for a few days to see how everything goes... Only to find out that a new feature has been released or a new version of the ROM I'm currently using and the process begins again, it's really cool :victory:
So today I picked a few ROMs, and decided to try them all, run a few benchs and write down the results. At the end I thought I could share the data gathered and perhaps we could get some idea of how these ROMs perform.
So the general process was the next:
Wipe everything but internal.
Flash ROM and ROM alone, no GAPPs, Magisk or MODs.
Wipe Dalvik and Cache (dev recommendation).
Shutdown from recovery, boot, install benchmark apps and restart.
Clear recents and begin benchmarks.
Notes:
TWRP used was latest official version.
Baseband is the latest official baseband for the chinese Z2.
ROM version was the latest as of yesterday.
Kept the phone above 40% battery, so battery charging was needed between ROM flashing from time to time.
Cooled phone between benchmarks, as to prevent throttling from affecting the benchmarks, however didn't add cooling when benchmarking.
Alright then! Let's get down to it!

SSE: Sling Shot Extreme.
SSE scores: Overall scrore, graphics score, physics score. Ditto for Vulkan.
Geekbench 4 scores: Single core, multi core.
Geekbench 4 COM: Compute benchmark.
Now let's talk a bit about these numbers. As you can see Oreo ROMs get higher scores in both 3DMark and Geekbench benchmarks, with Cosmic getting the higher score in the Sling Shot Extreme OpenGL benchmark and Cypher in the Vulkan variant, although not by much. In Geekbench Jaguar leads with the higher score in both the single core and multi core test. Now look at every Oreo multi core score, it is higher than its Nougat counterpart, I wonder if this is in part because of the drivers or OS optimizations, however I also wonder how this shows, if it show at all, in real world usage.
I would like to note that if I'm not mistaken Jaguar had increased CPU frequencies, not sure about the GPU though, and that could be one factor for the increased scores, however OMNI got really close to Jaguar and again, if I'm not mistaken, Jaguar is based on OMNI. I would like to point that as the day passed the room temperature increased (hot day), so take the temp thresholds with a grain of salt. The battery percentage loss found in the table is that which 3DMark reported in the OpenGL test.
One thing is that even when the numbers varies from ROM to ROM the difference is not that huge (around 12% max in the multi core CPU test), and most importantly... how this translates to real world usage?
So perhaps you noticed the last column, Dolphin. I decided to install the latest Dolphin version and run The Legend of Zelda - Wind Waker intro screen and write down the highest and lowest FPS reported by the emulator. What we find is that the scores do not always reflect into the emulator FPS. Also there is a 'DoT' in almost all ROMs, what does that means? Well DoT stands for slowDown on Touch, yeah it makes no sense but it stuck. When running the emulator if the phone detects no input from the touch screen the FPS slow down by approximately 40%, that's what DoT means, I had to keep touching the screen to get full FPS, only on Citrus this was not the case, and I was getting full FPS with no input whatsoever.
So what all this means? Surely we always like to see higher numbers, I know do. But with time I have found that higher numbers are not necessarily better, or that it does not translate to better performance, battery life or SoT, stability, features, etc., for example in Oreo ROMs I always liked more how colors showed in the screen, even though we have KCAL in Nougat ROMs too. Also I ran these benchmarks only once, so they are not one hundred percent accurate. Usually more runs = more score accuracy, so take these with a grain of salt.
For fun I decided to OC the CPU when using Citrus 3.5, set Adreno boost to high (honestly don't know what it does just that it boosts something related to the GPU I guess haha) and even when the benchmarks didn't improve that much (actually it got a worse multi core CPU score) I got better Dolphin FPS, and that just proves my point.
And that was just one real world test which I think it's heavier on the CPU. I would like to test an intensive GPU game and get some data on that. Also, numbers don't say much when talking about customization and features, so to really feel a ROM you have to test it out yourself.
It would have been awesome if I had have the time to test more ROMs or kernels, I just picked some ROMs from the Telegram group and some here randomly. But! That means that there is more out there for you to try out! As I said in a post this morning: That just means you have a lot of options to choose from and have fun installing, customizing and using the ROMs in your phone.
So yeah, had fun doing this and wanted to share. A HUGE thanks to all the developers out there! Thank you for giving life to our device! :highfive:
EDIT. Please forgive my english, I'm still learning
Great info , thanks :fingers-crossed:

Actually I just installed and ran the benchmarks right away, so I couldn't really say about bugs or share an overall experience.

I think the most battery friendly ROM would be stock. However custom ROMs keep improving, so that's awesome. Other than that, this was just an experiment to get some numbers therefore I can't really say about battery.
There are so many factors, like battery drain on light and moderate usage and heavy CPU and/or GPU usage, deep sleep, hpereat, stability, user experiencie, etc.
It is hard to measure these with benchmarks alone.
Fascinating post, thank you for doing this!! I just bought this device for 7k refurb (approx 100$), should easily last a year or more.
Would it be possible to do a run with the Pixel Experience rom? Or is that one similar to the other ones you've already done? Just doing my research on this device and the various roms, its blowing me away how much horsepower exists in this thing for the low price!
Whats Citrus 3.5 OC?
Link Anyone?
Thanks for the comparison. But I was wondering, AEX is arguably the most popular ROM for Z2, so why skip that one?

I understand and the reason is that I decided to try a batch of ROMs I hadn't tried before. I wanted to try many more, but time didn't allow it. Perhaps sometime close I'll do another run :fingers-crossed:
Very interesting! Thanks for your time.
Im considering to flash jaguar... im now on aex 5.2 but seems that jaguar is smoother and run good. Waiting for new latest builds to test this two and decide.

Cool, thanks. Mind sharing your experience with each of the ROM also, if you spent any time with them? Have you chosen any one?
