[Q] Apps auto updating without prompting - Droid RAZR M Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

So as I'm checking my email from my phone a minute ago I notice that all of the sudden apps are auto updating. Assuming from Google Play. I absolutely never allow any auto updating because of crappy updates. And i backup app versions that are reviewed favorably usually. I quickly shut off my phone to stop any more updates. Before I did that I checked my Google Play options first and auto updating was not checked. I did update to the newest version of Google Play manually the other day. Was that my mistake? I'm somewhat afraid of turning the phone back on for fear of it auto-updating again. I have most good versions of apps backed up but not all. I don't know if this is related or not, but my phone was fully charged at 7:30am so I unplugged it. When I checked my phone at noon while not having used it one bit since 7:30, the phone had only 57% battery life left. Which has never happened before. Thanks to anybody that can shed light on this issue.

you probably did not to shut your phone off - just kill the data connection.
but not sure why the auto-updating was occurring.

It looks like when I updated to the new Google Play it may have auto checked the auto update selection. But even when I changed it back it continued to attempt to update. So I restarted the phone again and it still tried updating. So as quickly as I could, I cancelled each update manually. A real pain in the ass. I caught everything that I didn't have backed up. I did kill data and wifi before I figured it out. And then reverted back to old Google Play. Hope this never happens again.

Well, when you give the store permission to auto update, it just checks the box for each app to auto-update. If you install the new store again, disable auto-update in the main settings, then go to each app and uncheck the auto-update box on each app's main page. That should stop it.

Well that's the thing, I never gave it permission to begin with. Which was why it was baffling initially. Everything seems to be unchecked now though so hopefully I don't run into this again.

XOOM not sleeping...

Hey all, new poster to xda here, in need of some expertise
A little while back I noticed that the battery life on my wifi xoom took quite a dive. I experimented with removing and reconfiguring several suspect apps, but wasn't able to pinpoint the issue. Then in the battery status screen in settings I noticed that the device is constantly awake, even through all hours of the night. Then in the android system screen within the battery usage section, I noticed a line "Keep Awake.....XXh XXm XXs" almost looks as though there's a setting somewhere telling tthe xoom not to go to sleep. Of course I cant find aany such setting.
Anyone have any thoughts??
there may be an app keeping it awake...
Of course, but I haven't seen any evidence of that. I've been using SystemPanel to check out app usage over time.
Is getting rid of each app individually the only way to accurately troubleshoot this?

You always want to check to make sure your device is sleeping properly after EVERY new app you download AND after EVERY update to existing apps on your device. That way you are never forced to try and figure out which one is causing problems like this in the future.
I once got an update to WeatherBug Elite that kept my Nexus One from sleeping. Since that exprience I give every app update or new app install a half hour on my device before I download a new update or app so in case this sleeping issue happens I can quickly know which app/update is causing the problem.
There are a few threads on the Motorola forums, here's one I started:
https://supportforums.motorola.com/thread/51485?tstart=0
Think I may have pinpointed the CNN app as the culprit. I force stopped it last night and saw this morning the device slept like a baby. I started the app at that time when I left for work. When I got home it had been awake all day. Force closed the app again and it seems to be sleeping again.
Anyone else have the CNN app to check this out?

I stopped using the CNN app for this very reason. The culprit appears to be BangoAnalyticsService holding a wake lock. (It also seems to use a lot of background data)
Shame cuz it's a pretty nice app. I'd like to keep it. Just need to remember to fc every time...
Yeah the CNN app is a POS.

Google Maps keeps running!

Google maps is keeping my phone awake, I cleaned the cache and forced stop but keeps running, It used 12% of my battery in 2 hours so is a issue, any way to fix it?
Uninstall the Google Maps update. Others have had the same issue.
Sent from my LT15i using XDA App
Check if you have Latitude running. It can restart google maps. Also, you might want to do a search on your own, you're not the first one with this problem.
I ripped out crap I didn't use and it helped with speed and responsiveness. Maps was definitely one to go. I can always install it later if needed.
I'm pretty sure it's Latitude that's causing the problem.

I've had this same problem. For me, Latitude was the problem. I don't use it, so I used Ti Backup to get rid of it.
However, my wife uses Latitude and the way she solved the problem is by going into the Latitude settings and turning off the auto-update location feature, which was waking her phone up every 10 mins or so to update her location. Now she has it set so that she has to manually update her location and the battery use issue has gone away.
Latitude was the problem for me also. I turned off Latitude and it was fixed.
How do you keep it shut off? I have the same problem with Latitude but it just keeps starting up again. Only thing working is unchecking using both wireless networks and gps but then no applications can use that stuff which isn't super cool. Latitude is ofc still running doing this but at least it's not draining my battery.

In Latitude > Settings > make sure "Do not update your location" is checked and "Enable automatic check-ins" is not checked. Then sign out of Latitude and you should be good to go.

Not much, really. Well, if you sign out completely you can't even see where your friends are.
Anyway, disabling the updates for my own location in Latitude's settings didn't make any difference for me.
As of 4.1.2 Maps is running permanently unless I disable Google Apps Location Access. LAME.
this has been an issue with me since ICS. I've uninstalled maps several times because I was getting such horrible battery life. I've seen my phone die in 3 hours in standby because maps was constantly running. Couple the map issue with your phone searching for a data signal, and it's easy to kill your battery from a full charge in just a few hours. Something needs to be done, severely!!
You can notice an instant, DRAMATIC increase in battery life after uninstalling/freezing maps, btw....I'd recommend giving it a shot to anyone having battery life problems.

I read that all location requests by all Apps goes through Google Maps, when WiFi and Mobile network location is enabled.
I too have been experimenting with different ways to boost my battery life, trying out disabling:
1. Signing out of Latitude
2. Turning off WiFi and Mobile Network Location
3. Turning off Google Now
4. Manually disabling Wifi and Mobile network etc...
So far I realize that its actually #2 that causes battery issues for me. Keeping latitude signed in doesn't seemed to have much impact if #2 is turned off.
I have ended up just uninstalling it because it was by far the most battery draining app on the phone, on the days where I was barely using it maps kept the phone awake for 3+ plus hours, making me charge the phone every day when I didn't even use it!!
My advice is when you need it, install it OR the day before, input the route/address/location you need and after the use for it ended, uninstall it. It'll be in your play store app list anyway so the above process, wont take too long.

You can also freeze it with Titanium Backup or similar. More practical way to do it, IMHO.
By the way, if you freeze it, location services will be in their own process.
Just disable Location access.

Good advice! I'll try it that way in the next couple of days when I have a few job interviews coming up. However, I DO wish EL goog sorts this problem out sooner or later, it's only maps in the core Google apps that really has this problem.

Phone Always Awake

So, I just went and checked my phone's battery usage and realized it has been awake all day. I'm not sure what's causing this, nor how to fix it. I tried glancing through the forums a bit but I'm pretty busy at the moment and didn't see anything, so I apologize for probably repeating a topic. Oh, I'm running MikG 3.0 with the Less Lionfish 1.4 kernel, Smartass governor and SIO I/O scheduler. Thanks for any help.
sounds like maybe a rogue app. did you restore any apps through Titanium Backup? did you recently download any new apps? How long have you been noticing it? do you have any data syncing in the backround that may be hung up?
app
I think alaman68 is correct. If you reboot your phone, does it happen again? If yes, check your running apps for rogue service. If not, you'll just need to to do trial and error.
Today was the first day I noticed it, and I check my battery usage rather often. I am constantly installing and uninstalling apps, but I don't have anything currently installed that I didn't have before when my phone was normal. I'll reboot my phone and see if it continues.

Check to see if you have FriendStream removed, I know MikG will allow this through the tweaks. If it's not showing up in your list of apps, it'll lead to a sync problem that will literally keep your phone on constantly. The only way to fix is to wipe and flash again, then don't remove it. You can try to push it back in through ADB, but that didn't work on my phone. I reflashed, and now I'm consistently getting 19 hours with no tweaks applied. Just a heads up. Without FriendStream, you may see the sync icon in your top bar all the time.
I don't have the sync icon or anything, just the ones on the pic but still awake?
If i do clean flash then nandroid restore, will the problem fine back?
What else can b keeping it awake
I don't have friendstrm or any of those Facebook related apps
Nothing comes up on battery use, its simply always awake

Possible NlpCollectorWakelock/NlpWakelock fix

Since day 1, despite factory resets and freezing bloat, my LG G2 has experienced some *insane* wakelocks around NlpCollectorWakelock and NlpWakeLock. We're talking about 2 hours every 10 hours or so of uptime, basically destroying my battery life.
Now, the simple fix for this is to turn off Wifi/Mobile Network Location, voila, phone deep sleeps, life is good. Except this doesn't fly for me, because I still want to use Google Now, and I can use it just fine on my S4 without this insanity.
To get a little better insight, metric-wise, I pulled Velvet.apk from /system/app and self-installed Google Search straight from the market (essentially Google Now) so that I could keep tabs on it in Greenify.
Turns out Google Search was running as much as 200 times per hour and causing wake-up ~5-10 times per hour. I could practically refresh and just watch the count go up and up.
So on a whim, being rooted and a little bit of a risk-taker, I used Titanium Backup and uninstalled Google Play Services. Null. Gone. Kaput.
Then when I launched Google Now again, it requested I nab Google Play Services from the market. So I did. I installed, rebooted.
To my surprise, in the last five hours since doing that, Google Search has run 12 times, and woken up 12 times. Better Battery Stats is reporting NlpCollectorWakeLock at 2 minutes and 8 seconds for ~5 hours uptime, and NlpWakeLock at 2 minutes and 43 seconds.
Anyone else want to take the dive with me and see if this gives them as significant of a before/after as it did for me? My phone is deep sleeping like a champ now and I really hope this keeps up.
tl;dr: Uninstall Google Play Services from /system/app using Titanium Backup, launch Maps or Google Now and then re-install Google Play Services from the market. Reboot. See if location service related wakelocks drop significantly. Rejoice if they do. Lament further if they don't.
Well, I removed Google play services and installed via market this morning. I'm still seeing a ****load of NLP wakelocks, but on the att version I haven't figured out how to completely remove search. Could that be the issue?

Oops, I guess I forgot to mention that I also removed Velvet.apk from /system/app (LG's pre-installed Google Search), and reinstalled that from the market as well. Not sure if that is related.
I, too, have the AT&T version. I will run some more tests today. But so far today with 1 hour screen-on, I have an up time of a little north of 2 hours, with an estimated 60 hours remaining. Obviously that isn't realistic, but by this time before I would be seeing an estimated time of about 9 hours remaining and be sub-90% battery life.

Weird! I wonder why I have/had a Velvet.apk.
Anyway, since my initial post, I've continued monitoring. My runs/wakes are WAY down, trending to about 1-3 per hour, down from a crap ton. My overall wakelock time is roughly 20 seconds per hour, or roughly 8 minutes or so per day, way down from nearly 2 hours/day before. My battery life has gone way up, I'm super happy.
will not uninstall

Huh, unfortunately I'm on the AT&T, so it is hard for me to comment.
When I did it via TB, it uninstalled in the same session, no reboot. No notification about rebooting twice.
Any other VZW users out there that can comment?
After an hour of idle time my time held awake by NLP wakelocks specifically is only three minutes, a far cry from the eight to ten I was seeing earlier. Will continue to monitor.

I'm still getting a ton of wakelocks. Not as much time spent held awake but nowhere near as low down as 1-3 wakes per hour . In 1h48m of non-screen time (out of the past 2h23m), I've got NLPCollectorWakelock waking my device 82 times for ~4 minutes of time held awake and NLPWakelock waking my device **284**(!!) times for 3 and a half minutes of time held awake...
EDIT: just uninstalled an app called "LGSearchProvider.apk" using Titanium Backup. Perhaps this is the same thing as the velvet.apk you were talking about earlier by a different name?

My settings match yours except I have Remote Wipe ability turned off, I still have my phone reporting a location to ADB, though.
Since my last post, I've seen a huge uptick in Google Search runs in Greenify (about 100 in an hour). However, only 5 wakes, and only 26 seconds of wakelock in that same hour. Will report more later.
I uninstalled the search, and Google play services, restarted, reinstalled, and restarted again. So far this is what I have is it normal?

I'm not sure there. It looks like you just have some initial Audio wakelocks from maybe a music player or your start-up noise.
You should check Android System or Google Services for things related to NlpCollectorWakelock or NlpWakelock.
---
Updates on my own report. For some reason Google Keep has shot to the top trending at 4 minutes/hour of wakelock time. I have no idea why, I'm not actively using it, or its widget. I'm greenifying it now to get rid of the noise.
Well, in 1h50m of uptime (30m screentime), according to GSam, NlpCollectorWakelock has kept my phone awake for ~6m. It's the only thing under Google Services that's kept my phone awake longer than 30 seconds. Nlpwakelock is virtually nonexistent, 9.8s of awake time.
edit: when i click 'manage' on GSam on the "Google Services" that's causing wakelocks it takes me to Google Bookmark Sync in particular. Coincidence? I froze bookmark sync since it's something I don't use anyways, we'll see what happens...I don't see how it could possibly be the culprit but you never know.

Interesting. I hadn't gone that deep via GSam, I may do it now though just to see. Good call.
edit: Mine just takes me to Google Services, sad panda.
nlpcollectorwakelock is google services, not google play services for me...
I have the T-Mobile variant and wanted to confirm that OP's instructions fix the issue. My device started out with great battery life and one day suddenly took a dive thanks to this issue.
I used TiBu to uninstall Google play services and Google search (which turned out to be velvet.apk) and reinstalled both via play store.
Screen went back to bring number 1 battery drainer for me whereas before Google pay services was in the lead by a wide margin.

I'm guessing you disabled something that another app is relying on, and is now forever cycling on calling on that app repeatedly. First thing I'd do is restore everything back and see what happens.

Well I can't possibly think of anything, but my phone never seems to rest. Even when it's sitting in my pocket it gets hot and drains

Another thing is that even in Safe mode the problem persists.
Safe mode doesn't reenable the stuff you disabled. As I said, enable everything back and restart. See if the problem goes away. That means you disabled something you shouldn't have.
Please tell me you know exactly what each thing you disabled was and you know what dependencies they have. Anything you don't have those answers for, you have no business disabling.

Alright, I'm doing a factory reset tomorrow and I'll get back with the results. Not too optimistic.
Can that be the sole cause? Or can there be some problemd with the firmware or system apps?

Can't say unless we know what exactly you disabled (need a whole list) . We need to rule that one out first because the phones isn't running the same services as what is expected of stock. Then finding out what's causing the wakelock to see which one needs to be reenabled.
Well a factory reset is the fastest way. The incremental reenabling is slower but you won't need to redownload everything.

I have re-enabled everything from EZ disabler but no difference has been made. I'll do the factory reset soon.
I was hoping Nougat would fix it, but I can't wait that long
