Google maps is keeping my phone awake, I cleaned the cache and forced stop but keeps running, It used 12% of my battery in 2 hours so is a issue, any way to fix it?
Uninstall the Google Maps update. Others have had the same issue.

Check if you have Latitude running. It can restart google maps. Also, you might want to do a search on your own, you're not the first one with this problem.
I ripped out crap I didn't use and it helped with speed and responsiveness. Maps was definitely one to go. I can always install it later if needed.
I'm pretty sure it's Latitude that's causing the problem.

I've had this same problem. For me, Latitude was the problem. I don't use it, so I used Ti Backup to get rid of it.
However, my wife uses Latitude and the way she solved the problem is by going into the Latitude settings and turning off the auto-update location feature, which was waking her phone up every 10 mins or so to update her location. Now she has it set so that she has to manually update her location and the battery use issue has gone away.
Latitude was the problem for me also. I turned off Latitude and it was fixed.
How do you keep it shut off? I have the same problem with Latitude but it just keeps starting up again. Only thing working is unchecking using both wireless networks and gps but then no applications can use that stuff which isn't super cool. Latitude is ofc still running doing this but at least it's not draining my battery.

In Latitude > Settings > make sure "Do not update your location" is checked and "Enable automatic check-ins" is not checked. Then sign out of Latitude and you should be good to go.

That's not a solution, though, is it? FWIW, I made a bug report: http://code.google.com/p/android/issues/detail?id=17356

Can I ask what good is latitude without the auto update feature? So your wife keep on manual updating everywhere she go?

I don't use it, so I can't say. I imagine she uses it to check in places, kind of like foursquare, which would be easy enough to do manually, I suppose.

Not much, really. Well, if you sign out completely you can't even see where your friends are.
Anyway, disabling the updates for my own location in Latitude's settings didn't make any difference for me.
As of 4.1.2 Maps is running permanently unless I disable Google Apps Location Access. LAME.
this has been an issue with me since ICS. I've uninstalled maps several times because I was getting such horrible battery life. I've seen my phone die in 3 hours in standby because maps was constantly running. Couple the map issue with your phone searching for a data signal, and it's easy to kill your battery from a full charge in just a few hours. Something needs to be done, severely!!
You can notice an instant, DRAMATIC increase in battery life after uninstalling/freezing maps, btw....I'd recommend giving it a shot to anyone having battery life problems.

I read that all location requests by all Apps goes through Google Maps, when WiFi and Mobile network location is enabled.
I too have been experimenting with different ways to boost my battery life, trying out disabling:
1. Signing out of Latitude
2. Turning off WiFi and Mobile Network Location
3. Turning off Google Now
4. Manually disabling Wifi and Mobile network etc...
So far I realize that its actually #2 that causes battery issues for me. Keeping latitude signed in doesn't seemed to have much impact if #2 is turned off.
I have ended up just uninstalling it because it was by far the most battery draining app on the phone, on the days where I was barely using it maps kept the phone awake for 3+ plus hours, making me charge the phone every day when I didn't even use it!!
My advice is when you need it, install it OR the day before, input the route/address/location you need and after the use for it ended, uninstall it. It'll be in your play store app list anyway so the above process, wont take too long.

You can also freeze it with Titanium Backup or similar. More practical way to do it, IMHO.
By the way, if you freeze it, location services will be in their own process.
Just disable Location access.

Good advice! I'll try it that way in the next couple of days when I have a few job interviews coming up. However, I DO wish EL goog sorts this problem out sooner or later, it's only maps in the core Google apps that really has this problem.

I have updated google maps to the latest update yesterday and now google maps has 2 processes constantly running/sitting in memory and power consumption went up a lot. Battery usage also shows now that google maps is using quite a bit of power, which never happened before. Has anyone noticed the same thing or is it just me?
have you logged into Lattitude?
Nope, I never use Latitude. Just checked and it is off.
Actually I have just uninstalled the update and was able to kill maps process and it didn't come back. Then installed it back and now, even if I kill google maps in the running apps manager, it immediately comes back
Well, THAT happened/happens on mine from the very first beginning even with no maps-update after unboxing and I received one of the first batches of SGS II in Europe.
But since I do not have a batt drain prob (even with heavy use my SGS II lasts minimum 24 hrs) I did not mind maps consuming SOME power ................
.......... and BTW I wouldn´t know how to stop maps-proc since I am (still) not rooted...............
Mine stops eating battery if I disable "use wireless network" under "Location and security". But of course it takes longer to locate me since it needs to get a GPS fix each time I use Maps.

That was the pair of tips I used to get the use I needed with no background process killing my battery. don't update the app for now until I hear the issue is sorted and only use the GPS, not wireless network, to navigate. The latter part is fine as the GPS lock is so fast anyway - usually about a second or two to be down to about 60ft or less.
The extra bonus is that if I'm out with only a 3G connection then dropping the wireless part under "location and security" also stops the wireless services from kicking in on the back of the maps system trying to use it for location. I can be using my phone all day and not have "wi-fi sharing" pop up and start gobbling up %'s even by the end of the day.
I got same issue - Maps process starts randomly and stays up for long time last time I saw it it was 125h consuming up to 14% of battery :/ quite annoying if you kill the process it pops up back again right away...
That Latitude stuff is horrible for battery.
Settings- Applications- Manage Applications- All- Maps- Clear Data.
Regards.
Possibly the cache map tiles in advance (forget the exact title) in the maps menu is checked and is downloading even when you don't have maps open?
Just disable "use wirelrss network" in settings...it should do the trick...seems like it updates your location continuously when you set that feature on....you can always turn it back on when you actually have to use maps....
My problem is that the battery used by gps nd google maps is enormous.... :-(

/I posted this in another thread but I'm desperate for help at this point.
At one point last week, my Nexus 7 had been running on eight hours from a full charge, screen had only been on for 1:15 and Android OS had kept the device awake for almost five hours, and used 50 minutes of CPU total. My battery was at 71%.
After receiving advice to do a factory reset, I did so on Friday and my battery life improved dramatically over the weekend. Android OS was using a much less percentage and keeping the device awake less. My battery lasted over two days with +4 hours of screen time. But once I commuted to work this morning, my problems started again. Android OS' percentage used and time kept awake shot up and my battery is down to 61% in 22 hours (1:11 of screen time) and Android OS has kept the device awake for over 6 hours.
Is this an operating system problem? Does anyone else commute to work and use Google Now for public transit updates? I have Latitude updating off but otherwise all GPS, etc. is turned on.
I am absolutely baffled and would love some help. Thanks in advance.

That seems to be the culprit. Try turning ALL options in the Location services off (Google's location service, GPS satellites, Location & Google search) and turn them only on when you need them.
This did the trick for me.
Otherwise use the tools CPU Spy and BetterBatteryStats (both available in the Google Play store) to get a better idea what exactly is causing the battery drain on your device.

Thanks for the response. That's probably my last resort. I mean, I bought this device because of features on Jelly Bean such as Google Now, which relies heavily on location services, and I have to turn all of them off? That disappoints me.
It's interesting to me that I had all of these services on at home over the weekend, yet it did not have this effect on my battery. Only because my device leaves the house should it freak out. That's a serious flaw.

This may or may not help, but I too was having battery problems but narrowed it down to being only when I was away from any Wi-Fi connection whether I was connected or not. I think there is a bug whereby if the tablet cannot establish your location from nearby Wi-Fi access points, rather than giving up it just keeps on trying to the detriment of your battery. I solved this issue by using an app called Automateit to instruct my Wi-Fi to turn off when the screen is off (as it would be the majority of the time while travelling). These kinds of apps allow all kinds of qualifiers, for example my Wi-Fi doesn't turn off if Spotify is in focus as I am streaming music using Wi-Fi. Give this a go and see if it helps.

Thanks. When I'm at work it stays connected to the same WiFi access point as far as I know.
Here's an update to the situation: I looked at my data usage over the last few days. Over the weekend, Android OS used virtually no data. Since then, it has used about 50 MB of data in the background. I work at a university so maybe it's trying to connect with other access points on campus even when I'm in my office. Any ideas? Thanks.
Edit: At work, the down arrow on my WiFi signal is constantly on, like it's always doing something. At home, not.
Having a weird issue with the GPS on my AT&T LG G2. Phone is unrooted on stock firmware. The GPS icon will randomly appear in the nav bar. Sometimes when I check after that, it will be turned on and I can toggle GPS off. Other times it isn't on by the time I check it. I always leave GPS off for the battery life savings. I've tried doing a factory reset and immediately disabling Google Maps. This seems to keep it from happening, but once I re-enable Maps, it will again start randomly turning on GPS. Even after disabling Maps at this point, it still does it. Only a factory reset then immediately disabling Maps seems to keep my GPS off. Any ideas?
Thanks!
I've noticed this as well. I keep mine on but it location icon started flashing earlier in a phone call.
No clue why that would be.

Had the same issue, it's something called carrier IQ that tracks you without consent. Fortunately you can remove it with root access. There are a couple of threads in the qa and general sections which address this and solving it. Search for them and youll be on your way.

Try disable location reporting in Settings. Also, there's a good chance Google Now! is using to access your whereabouts, unless your really want those cards, turn Google Now! off (voice search still works even after that). Look around Maps settings too, and if you see location sharing or let Google use Maps data or something like that, turned that off too.

This is how I fixed it, too. If you can't figure out how to remove CarrierIQ then you can just disable it after each reboot by going to settings->apps->running->android system->stop.

Hi,
I'm having the opposite problem. When I enable my GPS, after about a minute, it turns off. It used to work fine.
I have a Samsung, but I simply can't find my issue anywhere and I ran across this thread and I'm just praying someone might have some idea what's going on. It's frustrating!
Thanks
Today for the first time since I got my G2 a few of weeks back I used Maps to double check my location in an area I'm not overly familiar with. So I toggled Location Access on, found where I was via GPS, then turned it off. All good so far.
However, later in the day, noticing that the battery was dropping quicker than you'd expect, I looked in the battery stats and saw that Maps was consuming a extremely large percentage (nearly 50%!). I tried a force stop but that didn't seem to have any real effect. I re-checked Location Access, all off, didn't seem to be any other option.
So what's the deal, is it a G2 thing (I'm currently on rooted stock 4.2.2), a general Android problem or Maps misbehaving? More importantly what, bar a reboot or not using Maps, is the solution? Do I need to buy the enhanced versions of Titanium Backup and Greenify to effectively put Maps into stasis or is there a more elegant way of doing it?
A quick, inconvenience way to solve this issue is rebooting the phone.

Ok. Is it Maps bug or something specific to the G2?
Honestly, I have no clue.
I turn off location reporting to save battery. If you are on an AT&T Rom Carrier IQ could be the problem.
Greenify?
I have the same problem! Even greenified it, but it says still draining battery. The only way is to reboot!
Any help?
I'm using Cloudy stock 2.0
Starting this week I've been experiencing a serious battery drainage in my device.
I've noticed this drainage happens at a time when Location Services appear to be working, for no apparent reason.
Now, I always have Location Services on, but I can never see it in the upper bar (the one where you can see the time, Wi-Fi connection, battery) unless I use an app that relies on it.
However, in the past few days, I see Location Services up there even though I'm not using any app that relies on it. What's worse is that it stays there even after I close all apps. In regular cases it tends to remain there as long as the app that needs it is running. As soon as I close the app, Location Services disappear from the upper bar.
If I turn off Location Services it will go away. However, once I turn it on it will be up there again. It will only go away if I reboot my phone.
Do you guys have any idea what may be causing this? I bought by Nexus 6p by the end of February and hadn't experienced this issue until this week. Before that, my battery usage was normal, and I could go a full day without having to charge my battery.
This issue, on the other hand, can drain my battery in the span of 1 or 2 hours.

But I haven't used them.
For example, today I faced that problem solely by opening up Facebook. Then I rebooted my phone, opened up Facebook again but the problem didn't happen.
Now, I'm thinking this isn't happening by simply opening Facebook or Twiiter, but whenever I open them through the notification bar.
This is really odd.
I noticed the same battery drain. One night my phone batter wound up being pretty much dead. Today I noticed significant drain and when I looked at battery use, I saw where the consumption seemed to increase and observed the location services icon at the top of the phone that wouldn't go away even after making sure all apps were shut down. I don't really have many apps on my phone (certainly not ones that need location, so I suspect a recent update to Maps.
My first step was to delete and reinstall the updates. so let's see if that fixes it. If not, I'll just remove the updates and run that way until another version comes out. I suspect is just a goofed install or we would hear far more complaints of this issue.
I was literally getting ready to make a post about this. Sure enough, force-closing Maps stopped the issue. Glad to see it wasn't just me.
I'm having the same issue. I get the location icon on my status bar at random times and it stays there until a reboot. It eventually comes back. Pretty annoying as it is causing my phone not to deep sleep. I'm on stock with Franco kernel.

I'm having the same issue on latest stock firmware on both my SM-N910T3 & SM-T700. Started noticing the location icon all the time about a week ago, just about when it came out with the latest update on 4/1.
Well, uninstalling and reinstalling the updates to Maps didn't fix anything. I have uninstalled the updates and will monitor.

Facebook is, by far, the worst app you can have downloaded. It is the cause of general phone issues and bad battery life. I uninstalled both FB and FB messaging and my wake lock issue was fixed and, in turn, my battery life is noticeably better

I did a full master reset of my phone and am only running default applications. I still get the runaway location services. Before I did that, I downgraded Maps and that seemed to help. But then my phone automatically updated it. I know I can probably fix that situation but I'm surprised we aren't seeing more people with the problem.
Nexus 5x owner here (but posting my experience since this is literally the only thread on this anywhere).
Symptoms: Similar to everyone in this thread, location icon was popping up and staying resident in the top status bar. This was happening even without an event launching and causing massive battery drain. This was atypical of usage since my phone is basically not even used (essentially a notification machine with light text usage).
Checking the location menu, everything was listed as light usage, except for Maps as heavy usage (even though Maps wasn't even launched or in the recents menu)
Variables: Unfortunately, since my phone has been perfect since launch, I haven't been paying attention to all the updates granularly to isolate what was causing this. But, I do know for sure it happened after the April Monthly update and after a Maps update.
Troubleshooting: I was hoping it wasn't a system update issue, so I started poking around in the Maps settings to see if maybe a new Maps service was launched that was auto-enrolling users and potentially causing battery drain. Nothing to note, but I did notice I was signed out of Maps, which seemed weird. So I went ahead and re-signed into Maps with my Google Account.
Results: I honestly didn't expect this to have any impact, but the location issue hasn't come up after signing into Maps. It's been ~ 3 weeks and 4 battery cycles since I've had the location issue.
I'm not sure if signing in helped or maybe a server side Maps update fixed the bug, but if you're still having the location issue, it's worth a shot to see if you're signed into Maps (and sign in to try to fix the location issue).
If this does work for you, please report back since it will help in data gathering (and also we can let Google know the exact details of the issue and the potential fix so this bug doesn't hit in future versions).
