[Q] Recommend a kernel for Nexus 7 3G? - Nexus 7 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Can anyone recommend a good kernel for Nexus 7 3G?
Thanks.

THIS IS what I recommend you, and also THIS

A "good kernel" is based on your own decision.
If one recommends you one it might not be good for you as it does for the other.

Honestly your best bet is to read, read, read for at least a week. Then do it. It helps if you have somewhat of an idea of what's going on and the terminology.

DO NOT Start there.. that is a link to a toolkit and until you know what it does and can do it manaully i would suggest you keep as far as possible away from it.
Agreed with the previous two posts.. All too often I see people who barely know how the phone even operates and immediately try figuring out how to root it. Use your device as is for a bit. It's a Nexus, you don't get any more of a clean default installation. Why you are using it do as said above, read, read, read, and read more. I'm going my third year of using Nexus devices and I still occasionally revert to unrooted stock just to enjoy the pure and clean AOSP experience. Why? Because it's a damn good experience still right out of the box. :victory:
Enjoy your device and ask as many questions as you need.. Asking isn't a crime. :good:
I think I'm one of the rare ones here who runs a stock N7. I am perfectly happy with it though and don't feel the need to root at all. It does everything I want it to already. For my personal needs, it's perfect.
Just because you're now running Android, doesn't mean you have to root it.

How can I tell if I have the newer one?

Hi,
Got a Nexus 7 tablet for Christmas today. I remember reading back in October or November that Google updated the Nexus 7. I'm not sure what the changes were. How can I tell if I got one of the newer ones, or one of the older ones?
Thanks.

Ok. What does that show me that will tell me if I have the newest version of the nexus 7?
Why does it matter? You going to tell the person who got it for you here take it back as its last years crap? I am sure nothing has changed except there's no 8 gig version.

To know which batch your nexus 7 comes from, you need to look on the box it came in. That is where the serial and model numbers are. For example, mine is a C9O.

It was just a question. But hey, thanks for assuming that you know anything about me. I wish that there was a way to vote this up as a useless response. Idiot.

Yes, there are changes. Asus has done some hardware revisions from batch to batch. No need to frag the guy. Why he wants this info is really none of our business. Its easy enough just to ignore, or give the answer and move on. Our rude answers make xda look bad. Thats just not right, nor the reflection we should be showing.

Didn't frag the guy. He should be happy someone was willing to buy him one. Not question the gift. Have him call Asus and ask what his build date is.

Again, there you go with the making assumptions. All I did was ask a question. You filled in all the other details about my interest in my new toy all by yourself. But hey, thanks for contributing nothing useful.

You just need to stop. Different revisions can have different issues. Maybe the guy wants to be proactive in knowing what to watch for. Maybe he wants to REGISTER it, which he would need the CXO number for. Maybe he wants to know if it is a model known for missing screen screws, or the one known for loose screen screws. Maybe a model that it helps to use screw washers with. There alot of things to be learmed from your batch number. If you would have taken the time to read and understand those particulars in varying batches, this could have been avoided. Therefore, your statement that nothing has changed except that there is no more 8gb, is wrong, and as a result, not helpful in the least.

Like I said his best bet is to call Asus to get the info he is looking for. Still he is to stupid to realize this or to lazy. No he can try to hide it all he wants but he just wants to know if he has the latest build of a nexus and didn't get stuck with old back stock they found in a corner. No other reason to ask such a stupid question.

To call asus is ignorant, when you can clearly look on the box and get the info needed. But, waste all the time you want.
And.......your posts are reported. Thank you. Have a nice day.

Well he is to dumb to look at the box. So I was helping him get his info by saying calling Asus. Ooooh I am so scared you reported me but you might as well report him as he was the one clearly strarting the insults and name calling. But I guess your stupid to see that. You're a joke.

After reading thru the previous posts you have contributed nothing to the OPs question. All of this was completely unnecessary. If you have nothing useful to share then don't post. It was a harmless question and a person may wonder the same thing. Not trying to be the hero or anything, just saying.

This is the q&a section. Q&A is short for questions and answers, hence, he asked a question. That is the point to this whole sub forum. The second part is the answers. I understand you confusing the "a" for accusations, but it is answers. I think accusations go in the off topic area. Good luck in there.
The fact remains, your first post contained both an accusation, and incorrect and uninformed information. Speaking of jokes...........

Your incorrect info was saying nothing had changed, other than that the 8gb was no longer available. Fact is, things HAVE changed from batch to batch. Informed owners keep up with those things. I would recommend you google nexus 7 hardware revisions, so that next time you might be better equipped to understand the potential reasoning for the question, and not assume greed is at work. Anyone very familiar with the n7 would look at your respones of calling it a stupid question would immediately identify you as uninformed.

Honestly Dark Jedi, if you have no help to offer to the OP, kindly stop posting and keep your common sense. He has the right to ask. How is it any concern of ours why he wants to know ? If I offer you a cookie which smells funny, and should you ask me what the cookie is made of, should I answer your question or go, "Why do you want to know ? What ? If it's not the best ingredients, you want to throw it away ? In that case I'm not telling. Enjoy it". Honestly, don't understand what you have to gain from doing this to the OP.
@OP : Easiest way I could tell the difference between the old and new Nexus 7 was that the new one had 3G capabilites. So just take a look at your statusbar. If you're talking about the wifi only version, I guess the only difference I could think of is the new 32GB of memory storage.

Is there anything interesting about rasbeanjelly? Any more customization?
It was just a suggestion, they're all interesting in their own way. I used it only for 2-3 days because I went back to SmoothRom. Go ahead and try this one too, you've got nothing to lose!
I'd like to recommend u to see the following thread to select your next ROM.

Depends on what you plan on doing with it. I underclock personally.

Paranoid Android and Vanilla Root box are both nice. Give em a whirl.
