[Q] Overheating issues - Nexus 10 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

So Saturday night I was playing Modern Combat 4 on my Nexus. This was a short while after playing Real Racing 3 and Simpsons: Tapped Out for a little while (maybe 30 mintues each). I had been playing MC4 for about an hour or so, when my tablet froze and shut itself off. It didn't reboot, just turned itself off. I have noticed in the past when playing MC4, or NOVA, or TDKR (basically any gameloft game) that the top of the tablet gets very hot to the touch. I had been a bit concerned about the heat but nothing had ever happened besides it getting really hot. Was what happened Saturday a safeguard? Could something be wrong with my unit? Has anyone else seen something similar happen to them while playing games or doing something else intensive on their Nexus?

I've underclocked mine to 1200Mhz. No heat issues while game playing..

Have you had any performance issues underclocking?

As a better option to under clocking I suggest installing a custom kernel that is undervolted such as trinity or one that allows under volting such as ktmanta. This helps with heat immensely without slowing you down.

CPU Temperature?

Hello,
I just bought an N7 (16GB) a couple days ago.
Rooted with stock rom and Faux kernel. However my CPU Temperature is at 110-122 degrees F. Is this supposed to happen.
Haven't played any Tegra games since I've rooted it, but that's seems a little high to begin with.
Mods, feel free to move this if it is not in the correct forum.
Thanks,
Cyanide

I am not sure how tablets work but in the PC building community, 122F (about 50C) is not hot at all, it's actually a decent idling temp. Like I said, I don't know how tablet CPU/GPUs work, but at that temp you shouldn't have to worry much.
Thanks Mav,
Doesn't feel overly hot, but looking at the actual temperature just worried me a little bit.

Have you changed the max clock speed? If you're not playing graphic intense games 110-120 degrees is pretty high. The warmest mine has gotten even while gaming is 104 degrees.
I use System Tuner Pro to change the SysCtl options. I just used the recommended settings, I don't adjust anything.
Since both SetCPU and STP have clock adjusters, is that going to make a difference or will it cause problems?

Often times two CPU management apps running together will cause overheating and performance problems. I can't say if that's what yours is or not, but I would eliminate the possibility if I were trying to reduce heat, by clearing the app data on those apps and uninstalling them, rebooting, and installing only the one you will use.

50C is normal. 100C is the nexus 7 safety shut down temp(itll shut off when reacing 100C). 40-65C is a normal range when cpu is active, maybe higher when using cpu intensive games.

You're probably getting that confused with battery temperature.

Nexus 4 Reboots During Games

I'm having issues when playing certain games with the phone rebooting. The phone back seems to get progressively warmer and finally the phone will reboot. Has anyone else experienced issues like this with their N4?
If I load the game back up after the phone reboots it'll reboot in a much shorter period. Almost like the CPU is overheating.

When the nexus 4 reaches a warmer temperature something called thermal throttling kicks in and it clocks down the CPU and GPU to handle the heat. Your games will start to run slower and you will see FPS drops. If the temperature still continues to increase the phone will shut itself down to save itself.
A lot of nexii 4 get hot but most users can fix the problem by flashing a custom kernel and undervolting the phone. A few popular options are faux, franco, trinity and matrix you can try those out first.

[Q] When does Nexus 4 Throttling Occurs?

Hi Guys, im going to buy nexus 4 and i am afraid of temp. throttling because if i over heat my battery i cant afford to replace it, there are the function i do in a smartphones. in CPU - Messages(Whats app), Emails, Calls, Browsing, Facebook. in GPU - i play games like Temple Run 2, Subway Surfer, Fruit Ninja, Major Mayham, Zombie Smash and city building games........, will i get temp. throttling for that? and i dont want to root or install kernals because since it increases the limits it will most probally kill my battery.
Dont know if I got you right but is your question if the N4 will run too hot with your kind of usage that it will break?
I highly doubt that will happen but even if, just RMA it.

From Franco kernel
Thermal throttle threshold" ->"Soglia termica di rallentamento"
"This is the celsius temperature limit of your CPU temperature before it starts to throttle do decrease heat." ->"Questa è la temperatura limite in gradi Celsius della temperature dalla tua CPU prima che inizi a rallentare per diminuire il calore"
It's usually 70 Celsius

Dont worry about heat. S4 is already hot when switched on.

It's not temperature throttling. It's CPU throttling. 70 Celsius is not that hot. It's almost the same temperature as your body. Besides, if you don't constantly play games on the phone for hours the phone won't heat up like crazy. If you stay away from high graphic games like GTA 3, modern combat and shadow gun you should be fine. I have never reached the 70 mark because my phone is always cool while gaming or watching movies on Netflix because I undervolt. CPU throttling is great because you'll get great performance with less lag. Most people install kernels because they want longer battery life and better performance.

...or it's about 50% hotter than your body (158F vs 98F)...
FWIW, I've never actually seen mine throttle, when I haven't run testing apps against it. The games I recognized in your list certainly won't overheat it. It's a great phone.
I would be very concerned if my body temperature was 70°C.
But yes the CPU throttles at 70. Not because it's overheating but to still run optimally.
The CPU will be fine even at 90-100°
But then you run the risk of overheating the nearby components

Phone gets HOT playing clash of clans

Ok, played this game on MULTIPLE Androids and even iPhones. The g2 is the only one I've noticed that gets extremely hot within like 5mins of gameplay. I have a temp widget and it goes from low 90deg to 115 + within 5mins of playing the game. When it does this the phone starts to get laggy and the screen gets very jittery and touch sensitive. Possible I have a lemon or anyone else have clash of clans can confirm? ?

I haven't measured an exact temperature, nor have I experienced the lag, etc. But I have noticed that my phone gets a bit hot after having this game open for a short time. I'm guessing it's just a resource intensive game, and since the g2 has the power available, it's taking advantage of it (running at high clock speeds, etc.) causing the phone to heat up some. Sorry I'm not much help, but at least you know you're not the only one out there seeing this.
Wrong Thread.
Try it on a LG Spectrum or Note2,3 if you want to feel hot... Have then all. My G2 stays cooler.
I made a profile in SetCPU for clash of clans so it only can run at 1,5GHz max, now it's not draining the battery that much and doesn't get as hot and strangely I don't see any lag or graphics issues, it's like coc doesn't need that much resource but using it anyway.

which app you used to customize CPU,and can you please tell me details step to do it.

Download SetCPU and set MHz Max to 1500.
Root access is required for the application to be functional.
i have this problem too and installed set cpu . it working well but when i switch from set cpu to any other app like whathsapp or Coc the max frequence automaticlly set to cpu max freguence . for honor it is 1300 . i tested tegra overclock . same result like set cpu . my phone is Honor 3C H30-U10 . sorry for my terrible english .
I have a Galaxy S 3 if I battle once it getting super hot n shuts off n I put a ice pack under it it worked but later found my phone cracked so ???HELP ME
Mediatek chipset based CPUs are overheating abnormally after few minutes playing coc, so i suggest not to play it if you don't want your motherboard to die! My CPU gets abt 80 Celsius playing coc 2 minutes, nothing else even heavy games not causing overheating like coc can do it

Note 5 - CPU temperature

Hi all,
Loving the Note 5, but not loving so much how warm it seems to get in my hand, even under light/normal loading. I would be very interested to see some figures from other forum members. To make the test more accurate, I would suggest the following sequence.
MEASUREMENT 1
Close all open apps
Screen brightness 50%
Connect to WiFi (bad cell coverage might raise temperature)
Open App that allows you to see CPU thermal
Let the temperature settle down to a stable marker
Post temperature in celsius (apparently some of the apps have faulty Celsius to Fahrenheit conversion)
MEASUREMENT 2
Close all open apps
screen brightness full
Connect to WiFi (bad cell coverage might raise temperature)
Open App that allows you to see CPU thermal in the background
[*} Use camera app to film in UHD for 1 minute
Multitask switch to CPU temperature app
Read the temperature it reads immediately
Post temperature in celsius
MEASUREMENT 2
Random measurement...
Just any moment when you're doing light/normal stuff
Open the app and read the value in celsius
For me, the results are as follows:
Measurement 1 never goes below 30 degrees.
Measurement 2 was 73 degrees.
Measurement 3 is typically High 30's to high 40's.
1. 32C
2. 70C (within 5 seconds was down to 54C and within 10 seconds down to 42C)
3. 43C

I've been playing KOTOR and hearthstone without any issues or slow downs. Not sure how intensive KOTOR is though.

Good! Maybe I would buy it if i knew i get updates and if it was cheaper!
Anyone else care to chip in? I'm starting to believe the warm in hand feeling is much more pronounced when I'm out and about and using 4G intensely (Youtube + browsing + Spotify). Here at home on WiFi it never gets as warm.
Played Angry birds 2 and PPSSPP emulator(cpu internsive) i do think that the Note 5 throttles, just like G4 or any other phone but not because of the temp, but the Interactive govenor is bugged.
I played tekken 6 on ppsspp and it played 35-50 fps with a bit of lag here and there, change to performance govenor, SAME TEMP, 60fps smooth NO LAG whatsoever, it made AB2 also way smoother.
It's the govenor that might cause the problem, not throttling.
Have to bring this back up to see if anyone is getting cpu spikes.
Coming from a nexus 6 that ran around 95°F on average. My N920T is always jumping from around 115°F to as high as 169°F. The temperature is never constant it's always going high to low. Trying to decide if I should exchange it.
Any help/advice would be greatly appreciated

I've seen mine hit 80C (176F). This SoC just runs hot. Reminds me of Intel's mess called Haswell. Nothing to really worry about.

I've actually exchange that phone for a new one. The new one has a more stable temperature reading and only gets that hot in testing applications. The new one is much better. I couldn't last a day on the old phone, and it lost about 25% while I slept for 5 hours the day before I exchanged it.
