Hello,
I just bought an N7 (16GB) a couple days ago.
Rooted with stock rom and Faux kernel. However my CPU Temperature is at 110-122 degrees F. Is this supposed to happen.
Haven't played any Tegra games since I've rooted it, but that's seems a little high to begin with.
Mods, feel free to move this if it is not in the correct forum.
Thanks,
Cyanide

I am not sure how tablets work but in the PC building community, 122F (about 50C) is not hot at all, it's actually a decent idling temp. Like I said, I don't know how tablet CPU/GPUs work, but at that temp you shouldn't have to worry much.
Thanks Mav,
Doesn't feel overly hot, but looking at the actual temperature just worried me a little bit.

Have you changed the max clock speed? If you're not playing graphic intense games 110-120 degrees is pretty high. The warmest mine has gotten even while gaming is 104 degrees.
I use System Tuner Pro to change the SysCtl options. I just used the recommended settings, I don't adjust anything.
Since both SetCPU and STP have clock adjusters, is that going to make a difference or will it cause problems?

Often times two CPU management apps running together will cause overheating and performance problems. I can't say if that's what yours is or not, but I would eliminate the possibility if I were trying to reduce heat, by clearing the app data on those apps and uninstalling them, rebooting, and installing only the one you will use.

50C is normal. 100C is the nexus 7 safety shut down temp(itll shut off when reacing 100C). 40-65C is a normal range when cpu is active, maybe higher when using cpu intensive games.

You're probably getting that confused with battery temperature.

According to the System Tuner app, my CPU went up to 75 degrees Celsius while I was playing a track on Google Earth. I was running Earth for only a few minutes before it reached 75. I'm not sure if that's the peak yet...maybe it can go even higher.
I've seen several other threads about heat, but most people talk about 50s and 60s. Anyone reach 75C? The front and back of the phone, the top around the camera, were both very hot. It was almost uncomfortable to touch.
Again, I'm talking about 75 Celsius, not Fahrenheit. And I'm referring to CPU temperature according to System Tuner app, not battery temp. Anyone reach this?
picture plz.
the reason is bc someone did a stress test on the N4 and found that the device shuts down at ~57-59C (correct me if im wrong) to prevent damage to the hardware.

75ºC on a quad core?
I thought it was supposed to be more efficient than a dual core... 167ºF just seems like it's way hotter than any electronic device should ever be.

My first gaming laptop was an ASUS Republic of Game first generation. They did a horrible job cooling the machine. During the 2 months before the machine failed, the GPU would reaches 110 - 140 C if I played games (then, of course, the machine turned the GPU off and still ran as everything else was still about 70-80 C)
When the machine did fail, I opened it up, and found 2 fried thermal unit, a fried GPU and a nearly fried HDD) Amazingly, the machine stills runs, as long as I don't load GPU driver
Well, that's the story. Back to OP, as you see, if the temp is too high, you device can be literally fried. So if you turn off the thermal throttle, please enable it back on and do you best to keep your device cool
I tried to replicate just now and could only go up to 63c. I don't want to keep trying based on the comments here so far. If it happens again I'll be sure to get a screen shot and be aware of what's running.
Where would the thermal throttle toggle exist, if I have the capability at all? I'm running faux123 kernel and use trickster mod and trinity kernel tools for tweaking. I don't see anything about throttle control.
On a similar note, faux123 seems to default to 1ghz minimum cpu frequency. Does that seem right? I've flashed lots of kernels before on previous phones and they always default to the lowest value. When I force the setting down to 384mhz, it automatically changes back to 1024mhz the next time I go in my tool apps. Does this seem normal?

I haven't seen a Nexus 4 kernel that has thermal throttle toggle, or have it disabled yet. I am just checking if you're running one that I am not aware of

Minimum cpu frequency enforced by kernel is normal. I am not certain if faux123 default to 1 ghz min, but if it's the case, it seems weird for me too. Definitely not good for the battery. If there's no other CPU control apps, I recommend double check the settings, then find an update for faux123, or use trinity kernel
I just flashed a new kernel and my minimum cpu now seems more normal. I hopefully that alleviates the crazy temperatures too.
I'll try to test again tomorrow to see if my temps still go bonkers. It's time to sleep now. Thanks for the help, everyone.

You may use an app such as System Tuner to watch your CPU temperature. Mine get 50 celcius after 15minutes playing NFS MW... I dont know if it is still normal.
What version are you on? Mine used to be uncomfortably warm, but since 4.2.2, that has been fixed for me.

Hi,
It feels hot... its very subjective without a real measured CPU or battery temp. Like opticaldh said, install an app with monitoring CPU temp and see. What kernel ?
Also what is the battery temp?

I am on Franco kernel, fast CPU, UV 150 (Default for 384Hz is 850, now it is 700). That's what makes me worry.
My Nexus has been getting uncomfortably hot. I first noticed it last night after getting to a friends place and took the phone out. It was really hot and the battery had dropped about 20% for a 15 minute drive. I checked the battery and Google Maps was showing at the top with the most usage even though it wasn't enabled.
I then proceeded to check the settings in Maps and turned off all the location tracking stuff which was unfortunately enabled.
However, even today my phone was again quite warm after driving around. Battery didn't even show Google Maps so that wasn't the cause.
It may have something to do with signal issues always trying to get the strongest signal as it doesn't happen when I am at home and not moving around.
Maybe your friend is hot

is this your first smartphone? they all get "hot"
Only way to really reduce heat without an impact on performance would be to undervolt. Another way would be to underclock. Both you need a custom kernel to do.

@Detailed, @opticaldh, shutup and stop telling people to undervolt, youll just get them into more trouble.
Matrix kernel runs at 288 MHz when idling, you can under volt it at around 650ma there.
I am running Motley kernel, idling at 308 MHz, UV at 700 ma. The only time I notice my n4 getting hot is when I use GPS and charging simultaneously.

i don't have a problem with heating on my Nexus 4, running latest franco kernel + uv settings makes it a lot cooler than before, when i don't use uv settings it heats up too pretty fast but with those settings it even stays cool on benchmarks and stability tests, cause i don't play on my Nexus 4, could try that out too to see if it gets hot. well it gets slightly warm but never "hot" i would never call it that.

So am running classic stability test 2.7, and I've ran this before and my CPU get to 60°C or after like 15 minutes, I ran it today out of sheer curiosity and it started to show 91°C. Am using cm with there kernel since I recently flashed the latest nightly and thought how would it differ from matrixes. Another thing it can be that the values are being incorrectly displayed. Is this something I should worry about? Am really not in the mood for an RMA and losing my phone. Shouldnt of the system shut itself down after a certain limit as a fail safe?

Are you sure it is Celsius and not Fahrenheit? Is about 33 degrees Celsius. At 91 degrees it would have shut down and rebooted a long time before reaching that temperature.
Trickster mod says its °C so?
edit: the device itself gets very very hot which am sure if it was running at 30 it would be fairly cool would it not?

it was very hot I had to put it down so am guessing its 90C, but now its a lot better, it seems it wasn't throttling proper? it attempted to run the entire thing at 1.5ghz constantly, rather than it's usually clocking down to 1.1ghz. Now it's throttling and while its at 78C, it just feels warm and it actually being managed.
I flashed back to matrix's kernel and prefed to use the scaling test which would probably be closer to real life usage and its running 45C. I really like CM and don't want to flash back to stock but I may end up doing it
Note to self
Don't run stability tests

Must be a mistake. 91 degrees Celsius is almost 200 Degrees Fahrenheit, that would melt the plastic on the phone, and burn your fingers.

stability tests are meant to push your cpu to its limits. pushing the cpu to its limits will create lots of heat. it is meant to do that. if youre using stability tests, you can not complain about heat. its like putting your car in neutral then flooring the gas pedal, itll cause your engine to get hot, especially if you do it for 15 minutes.

safety cpu shutdown for the gnex is 110C. as soon as i saw it hit 110C, it shut down. but you really have to try to get it to that point by stressing it awfully hard. same with the nexus 4, 100C is the safety shutdown. running certain benchmarks or stress tests are the only ways to get it that hot. which is why it makes no sense that someone running a stress test for 15 minutes is complaining about heat, asking if he should rma his device.

Canada its fkin freezing!! just checked set cpu and its 23 c, but im just scrolling through twitter, not really doing anything else.
The points that I would be concerned with temps are
Battery > 50°C
CPU > 80°C
This is based on stock thermal throttle at 60°C CPU
On Franco kernel I have upped my throttle limit to 70°C so I wouldn't be concerned unless it went above 85.
You will know if your battery is at a dangerous temperature because it will be very uncomfortable to hold
I just played some beach buggy blitz for 10 mins.
CPU jumped up 20° from idle up to 50° but again well within my tolerance

for the record am not asking if I can RMA, am happy with my device and really don't need to lose it for a week. But this just started happening more frequently. Sometimes the thermald ****s up and it doesn't throttle at all, at times I could be just playing GTA, Worms, Plague etc I usually don't notice because the phones down on the table, pick it up and owwwww flashing back to matrix solved the majority of it tbh. Right now it's sitting on 31C idle, it'll be about 40-50C on chrome funnily enough, and then 60ishC on games, pushing 70 depending how long I leave it on. I see that as fairly normal tbh, but 90C? I wouldn't even trust my fan cooled i5 to go there.
And am back were I started just playing 2 minutes of batman and its at 70°C and burning my hand

but yea, its possible to reach those high temps if, and only if, pushing your cpu. itll get warmer faster if your gpu is overclocked(is gpu overclocked in franco kernel?). now, if doing nothing and the phone gets that hot, thats a problem(software or hardware).
nah its not overclocked, atm its cooled down, although it does take a while to drop from a high temp to something low even on idle.

overheating i doubt, what was the cpu and battery temperature? just because it feels warm, doesnt mean its overheated. when it actually overheats, first the cpu will lower in cpu speed(safety), then if that doesnt help itll shutdown. is the weather around you warm btw?
+1 @simms22
Also, if it's really getting to warm your phone would run unstable.

Thanks for your replay, I still don't understand why my mobile has started getting warmer more quickly ever since I've installed custom rom. I've hardly played any graphics intensive game on it so far.
I don't know from where to know cpu and battery temperature. Do I need to install any application from playstore? Weather around here is warm. On average 35-40 degree temperature.
My phone CPU reaches 70˚C and battery 50˚C when driving in my car, charing with gps on a this time of the year(hot as hell here as well).
Everything seems to be find, didn't even turn itself yet so I doubt theres anything to worry about.
My gf forgot her phone in the car stand in the sun for a few hours, when she came back it wouldn't turn on until it was cooler so you can be sure your phone can take care of itself.
Maybe your governor was changed when you flashed the ROM, depending on the governor (like performance) your cpu clock speed may be increased more often then with the original governor.
You can check your governor with apps like no-frills cpu or setcpu and check the temperatures with cpu z

its easier to use an app for battery and cpu temp. being 35-40C around you, id expect the phone to be warm most of the time. anyways, after installing a custom rom your device spends a lot of time syncing stuff. so itll be a little warmer than normal. after about a full battery cycle it should stop, and will be a little cooler. also, a reboot after several hours after a rom flash should help a little too.
Ok, thanks for your quick response.

Anytime you run an intensive game or the like your phone will get warm, no matter what phone it is. Benchmarks get warm too, however I find those to be useless.

Hot as in "it shouldn't be at this temperature at all while doing what it's doing".
So that means 39°C tops. That's a bit above human normal body temperature. Not bad.
If I remember well, playing Plants vs Zombies 2 gave me 47°C tops in GSAM Battery Monitor, without ever rebooting.
Thanks.
Compass.
yeah max I had was 50°C, but not very long.
I guess it can shoot up higher, but for usually when doing intensive stuff, its about 39. Not to bad.
was one build it was 42 also in rest. That wasn't to long though. pretty cool, new build and fixed haha
@Compass Linux - my device gets extremely hot on any aosp rom even on normal usage, like web browsing, texting, checking emails and reading certain articles on the web, the cpu temp ranges from 50*C-60*C at times even 70*C and it gets throttled down as i set my tmep trottle at 70*C.
battery temps range between 27*C to 43*C which is NOT normal so im no longer on any aosp roms. it scares me as for lithium batteries temps above 35*C is bad for its life. also none of these temps are good for the phone so now im on pardus hd 7.1 and my cpu temps are within the rage of 35-50*C and battery temps from 32-35 under the tasks which i mentioned earlier.

battery temps range between 27*C to 43*C which is NOT normal so im no longer on any aosp roms. it scares me as for lithium batteries temps above 35*C is bad for its life. also none of these temps are good for the phone so now im on pardus hd 7.1 and my cpu temps are within the rage of 35-50*C and battery temps from 32-35 under the tasks which i mentioned earlier.

cpu will happily run ~75c without throttling, max temp is 92C at which point it will turn off.

wtf ! thats so strange !!!!!!! thats just too high for me man. i always set throttle to 70. at times even at 58*C when the ambient temps are high in my locality. anything above 80*C is bad for any processor.

If it was bad for the CPU why would it come from the factory to start throttling at 75?
I think you're mixing your views of desktop CPUs on to SOCs.
SOC (system on a chip) are crested to be passively cooled.
For this phone 30~50 idle/light tasks and unto 75c underload is perfectly normal and safe.
