[Q] Should I send to LG for repair? - Nexus 4 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

My screen cracked making the phone completely unresponsive, at the same time I had my adb-debugging off, so now I can not unroot the phone, nor can I retrieve any data from it. So I was wondering if I can still send LG the phone and go by without them noticing it is rooted, or should I just replace the screen on my own? Also if you know is there a way to enable debugging on this phone by just using the computer? And also if I were to buy a screen could you suggest some places to buy it at? I found this on ebay and was wondering if it would work http://goo.gl/oYhLG? This seems to be the cheapest, if not send me some suggestions, Thank you very much!

You don't need debugging on. Just flash the stock image in fastboot and relock your bootloader.
Check the sticky roll up in general.

Getting a screen replaced from LG isn't under warranty... So having it unlocked shouldn't make a difference.
Mine was stock rooted/unlocked and they had no issues taking my $140 and replacing my screen.
I filled out the request on the web, a rep got back to me within a day, answered my questions and they sent me an RMA number. I shipped my phone to the Fort Worth facility and had it back in a week. Once they look it over, they send you back an email with the details of the repair and you can fill out a form or call and pay over the phone. I chose to call and talked to two very nice and helpful reps. They don't start the repairs until you agree to pay and they do cover that new part for a year I believe.
All in all I had a good experience dealing with LG directly and the screen I got was a new screen of better quality than the one it replaced. I find its easier and safer to just let them take care of it... If they break the screen or the phone during the repair, they replace it at no cost to you. If you break something during the repair, you're in for more than you were originally.
Just my two cents, good luck!

Dropped my G2 = glass cracked!

I've found a replacement screen on eBay for $68 but have no idea how to replace it. I don't see any disassembly of the screen on any of the teardown pics. Any help would be much appreciated.
Insurance thru tmo. Better off getting brand new out the box. Just my thought.
[G2/HTC Vision]
Yeah, that would be ideal but I bought the phone used. No insurance. Also everything, including the touchscreen, works perfectly fine still. The glass is just cracked.

You can call T-Mo, have them add the premium insurance, and then call back in a couple days and have them give you a replacement under the plan for $130.
EDIT: Make sure to get confirmation on this before you go through.
Of course, $68 is much better than $130. This link to a Desire Z teardown shows the top panel being taken apart (about 2/3 of the way down the page). It's a hell of a process; one that might leave you with more than just a screen issue if something were to go wrong.
Pix please and also what link are r u looking at? $68 seems to cheap. Just wanna make sure you dont end up with a mytouch or hero screen
Wow, thanks for your help so far guys. Sorry about the links, it wouldnt let me post a normal link since Im a new user, so just cut and paste.
Here is a link to the replacement screen I found on eBay, its actually $58:

thats pretty bad on the phone but yes that is the right screen.
You cracked the touch screen part not the lcd which would of cost more.
Good luck with replacing it. Idk how good you are at this stuff but for me it doesnt look to hard just make sure you have all the right tools.
and @ EfemaN
thanks for the link. and has anyone looked to see if the led has multi- color?
i don't think you can add insurance now. only at the time you bought the phone.
actually when i bought, they added insurance w/o telling me. i found it later and canceled cuz it's 6.99/mo and deductible is 130. i thought 130 is way too much.
how much will HTC charge you? around 200?
HTC wont even repair them yet, that is the worst part. Below is the email I got from HTC customer service.
We apologize for any issues you are experiencing with your device and would be happy to assist. Unfortunately, we are not currently supporting this device for repair. We will have RMA options available soon, but do not have an ETA on when this will take effect. If you have any questions or concerns, please contact Customer Care at 1.888.356.2375.
I was able to remove and re-add insurance back over the last year or so that I had my Blackberry. There's no harm in just calling to ask.
I just called T-Mobile to have a new G2 sent (having radio issues), and during the usual agreement word-for-word reading, the rep mentioned the "if we find that you screwed up your phone" fee of.. I believe she said around $280, and if I remember correctly, it was $130 for the Blackberry. That $68 screen seems a little more attractive now...
I called and tried to add insurance to my G2 today. T-Mobile said I had the phone more than 15 days and could not add it :-(
They did say that there is a year warranty on the phone that covers defects, but not breaks caused by consumer.
I also asked if they have an open enrollment period like some phone insurance companies do and they said that they didn't.
The DID however say that if I went to a T-Mobile store and got any repairs or exchanges done, I would be able to add insurance.
FYI my G2 is in perfect condition. Was just wanting to know if I could add it. Wish I would have when I had the chance.
Just so you guys are aware..
Insurance can be added only during an open enrollment period - purchase of a new phone or a warranty exchange. More or less, whenever T-mobile gives you a phone, you have 14 days to add it to the line.
That being said, the qualifying event that enables you to add insurance to your line doesn't necessarily have to cover the phone that was purchased or exchanged. The insurance will actually follow the sim card (iphone excluded) so that if you put your sim card into another device, that is actually the device that is currently covered.
Now, if you have a phone that can't receive a signal (totally inoperable as a phone) you might run into some difficulties actually making the claim. While it is technically policy, they would certainly prefer to see some usage on the phone you're trying to make a claim on. Depends on who you talk to, really.
Figured I would share. Toodles.

why dont you sim unlock your phone and see if you cant get signal, get your replacement device, which would be covered as a defect, and then add insurance to that one. I prefer sprints insurance, they will even let you claim a phone you got used from ebay/cl or whatever. Also, you might want to look into a third party insurance provider, as asurion is who covers it through every carrier anyway. They will always just tell you to call them, wont make anything easier.
Does anyone have a better tear down link than this?: tjworld.net/blog/htc-desire-z-tear-down
This assumes that the 1/2 that the screen is attached to is separated from the other 1/2 of the phone. I ordered a new digitizer and am just waiting for it to arrive. I was quoted $50 labor from a local shop here in NYC. I ordered the part for $36.
good luck with this man
it really sucks to have almost no good guides on how to take apart a phone

Quality of replacement screens

I am now a member of the "I dropped my damn phone" club. Landed face down right on top of a piece of gravel.
I have searched for and found a few sources for reasonably priced digitizers/screens and have a few concerns. I've read here and a few other places that the ones we find as consumers may be rejects from HTC. Several forums mention light leaking from the lower buttons (home/menu/back/search) and response issues.
Anyone done a replacement and found these issues? If you are satisfied with the replacement, care to share your source?
Weird that you mentioned light leaks... my first Aria had small pin hole dots beside the search button and under the menu button... drove me nuts in low light areas.
As far as the replacement screen... I dropped my phone 3 weeks ago, and got a replacement in the mail the next day from ATT. The insurance is worth it.
Good luck!

What did you tell ATT? I tried calling in to get my phone replaced. The mistake I made was adding the insurance after I dropped it, so they were not able to help me out. It happened last month. I read through ATT, they will not replace the phone if you dropped it accidentally, and the cracked screen is not preventing it from functioning properly. I want to call again and say I just dropped it so I could get a replacement. Any incite on what to say?
I got sooo lucky...well, I should find out by Tuesday. I called AT&T to see about having their repair place do the screen replacement. They advised me that I had purchased insurance and all would be taken care of (relieved/surprised). They transferred me to the repair place and they said I didn't have insurance. Got transferred back to customer service they said they screwed up when the told me that I had insurance. You bet they screwed up...long story short, they confessed that they "misled and misinformed me" and that all would be taken care of. They entered the insurance purchase as of day 1 and all I have to pay is the deductable. New phone shipping overnight (no extra charge) and they don't want the old one.
I'm still going to replace the digitizer, keeping it for me, my wife shall get the new one for Christmas!
One key factor in the negotiation is that they misled me and that I was about to go buy her a new android device anyway. Their misleading and misinformation encouraged me to consider a different device from a different carrier. That is what made them "correct their mistake" and "take care of me". I got lucky. As long as the new device makes it to my door!
I just told them my phone took a fall for the worse, explained to them the digitizer still worked, and that the screen was just really shattered! The were like okay, we will get you one out today.
Wont replace it if you "accidentally" drop it? WTF?

Experiences with LG warranty repairs on your N4?

So my current situation is such that I have an N4 with a defective earpiece speaker, and it appears I have 2 options: go the RMA route, but that is likely to take several weeks to accomplish...or send the phone into LG for warranty repairs. So in light of this, I wanted to quickly get a feel for peoples experiences with LG repairs, particularly regarding length of time and overall ease of the transaction. I know some have sent theirs in for repairs that were due damage that was their own fault (ie screen breakage) so I'm really not so much concerned with what it cost you (since mine is a defect and should cost me nothing other than shipping). Anyways I hope to hear some feedback on this since I'd like to make a decision soon as to which way I'm going to go.
Thanks!

Did u buy it from Google directly if so RMA it. They will send u replacement it takes just few days and u get to use or phone till u get the new one.the catch they will put temperature hold on our bank account in case if you don't ship the defective one and shipping to them is free. The lg method might take much much longer..:what:

Send it back to LG for repairs $100-160 cost
I'd look for a local cell phone place that does repairs, yes the nexus 4 has the glass that wraps the edges but you can always show them this and if they say yes they can repair it then I'd let them repair it..they should warranty their work and you won't have to be without a phone ..id do it that way pending on the price compared to sending the phone in for warranty work.

Hey what exactly was wrong with your screen. Mine works fine, but just has a cracked appearance. This means that they will only have to replace the glass aka digitizer but not the LCD underneath. There for my repair should be cheaper than most people. What did you have to get replaced? I'm curious if my repair cost would be less than yours. Thanks.

Buddy, you have dropped a GLASS made phone, what do you expect??? Sometimes-you drop it and it doesn`t break, next time- you drop it and it breaks!!! It`s GLASS. Probably they need to come up with a titanium edition, just for you!

Yes, you are right... Nexus 4 is the best looking smartphone I have ever come across so far... And Truth is I am never used to cases or covers for phones, and If at all I have to cover with a protection case, it is waste of the killer beauty again..That is why I await Larry's promises to be true on xPhone/Next Nexus(For Google I/O'13), as he said “In today’s multi screen world, the opportunities are endless… battery life is a huge issue… when you drop your phone it shouldn’t go splat,”... My decision was utter wrong on Nexus 4, I'm a hardcore nexus fan... After I get it fixed, I buy a cover and give to my brother....
UK Repairs service
Hey Guys,
Just wanted to say I've cracked my phone as well (woe!), less cracked-rather than smashed in multiple places. Was just minding my own business playing a bit of Ruzzle whilst pondering the questions of life on the toilet...
Anyway, called up LG support (make sure to find their cheaper phone number from saynoto0870 website); and was told they'd send me an envelope with details on the repair.
If you go on the website to schedule a repair, it'll tell you they carry out fixed price repairs at £130. This should leave the phone under warranty.
When I received the envelope, it was a letter from a company called Regenersis; who appear to be the repairs company responsible for a lot of outsourced repairs internationally. They also appear to be the source of some internet ranting due to bad customer service (seems to be a general trend with these third party repairs companies).
Anyway, sent phone off yesterday so will try to report anything back with regards to prices, results etc.
BTW this is for UK only, although I suspect LG will do something similarly for most other countries with regards to repairs.
I think they should have made the back out of flexiglass.

So just called up Regenersis on Friday morning and they gave me a quote of 122GBP for full repair, service and postage back to me. 8 pounds cheaper than the fixed price on the LG page. So paid via direct debit over the phone and have been told it should be sent off in a few days as both the phone and parts are ready to be put together. I would expect to receive it sometime mid-next week. Will post back on repair results. (If the quality is good, it would have been about the same price as buying my own screen from Ebay. It would probably take aprox. the same amount of time due to long postage times; though the main advantage being that I keep my warrantee).

Hey guys,
Final update on the phone repair situation. I received my phone this morning from Regenersis after a total time since send off of aprox. 2 weeks since registration on the LG repairs website. (What more of a present could I ask for on my Bday!).
Anyway, in summary; the repair itself after paying took only 1-2 days.
To my surprise the experience overall with these guys were reasonably pleasant despite the bad reviews on the net. Although I suspect that's the standard scenario where someone will only complain when something goes wrong.
Either way, the repair cost less than the quoted guaranteed LG repair price on their website of 130GBP.
Tips for anyone planning on sending their broken Nexus 4 to these guys:
Register through LG repairs service first. Book your slot online, then give the LG guys a call next day to confirm it's gone through so that they can get Regenersis to send through a repair letter with details.
Once the phone is sent off to Regenersis (I'd suggest Royal Mail tracked as this'll allow you to know exactly when it's arrived in Glasgow); give them a call within about 2/3 days to ask about an online quote or otherwise when it'll be examined by their engineers. (I had to wait until next before calling back to ask about the price and paying through the phone via direct debit).
After that I'd suggest giving them about 3/4 working days to repair if they have all the parts ready etc, before calling back to check on progress.
With any luck you'll get your phone back within about 2 weeks.
I've attached a picture of the repaired phone; it seems good as new and there are no scratch marks or signs that the phone has been tampered in any way. (Sorry for the bad photo!).
Edit: Had a play with the phone, a horizontal line across the upper quarter of the screen doesn't actually respond to touch; only has display. Sooo....called up LG again this morning to have them tell me they'll send me another package to send back again to Regenersis... Only one piece of advice, don't for frack's sake break your Nexus 4. Seriously!
Turns out after the repair, the phone was placed back under warrantee status allowing me to raise the issue up with Google themselves. So after a quick call to the US phone line (cheaper with the say no to 0870 redirect phone line), they agreed to send me a replacement. I received it within 3 days from the call and haven't needed to be absent of a phone for over a week if sent to repair again. Now to simply send the broken faulty phone back to google via their supplied prepaid packaging.
Happy repairs guys,
Signing out.

Newsflash! LG is not in the glass production business. They receive their Gorilla Glass from Corning, just like most of the other manufacturers out there. If the glass broke from you dropping it, it has ZERO to do with LG's build quality.

Was your phone repaired or replaced? Was the internal memory wiped?
I have a cracked unresponsive screen and will be making an insurance claim (so slightly different process). Unfortunately I hadn't enabled USB debugging so I'm struggling to get the files off the device before I send it off.
I'll be insisting on a repair rather than a replacement and I don't want my device being factory reset.

Hey Carpetboy,
Mine was simply repaired, but all my files had been backed up to dropbox and gmail so wasn't too bad. My gf had a few things fixed through insurance and they've just replaced it each time because they're not necessarily specialised to deal with repairs; especially if it's a very new phone it seems. Though if it's just a screen repair it might not be too bad.
Good luck dude! :good:

LG Repaired Cracked Screen for $153
Hello everyone,
I recently had my phone repaired by LG. They replace the screen for $153. The repair facility is located in Ft Worth Tx, and the payment center is located in Alabama. It cost me $20 to send it 2nd day air via UPS. Also, I bought another nexus 4, and now am returning it back to google less then 15% restocking fee. Basically, i rented a nexus 4 16gb for $50 over a 2 week period.
Same!

I went to my provider here in Canada as well and it was because my phone over heated and the front glass cracked and my provider told me it would cost about $250 and as I read these comments it makes me question why is it $250 in Canada but only $140-$160 in other countries? its not fair ( well in my opinion it should be the same price just in CAD ) I too need this number! it just makes no sense ! I live in AB so tax shouldnt be the problem neither.

LG G2 Replacement

Long story short, dropped the phone and shattered the screen. Digitizer dead so touch screen doesn't work!
Yesterday was the last day I could have put the insurance on it so I cant take it back to Best Buy or anything.
Called LG and they said I have to send it in but i don't wanna imagine how much hey will charge me.
Anybody know if they sell the digitizers separate to buy to replace the screen?
Any help will be appreciated

Just sent mine to LG to have the screen/digitizer replaced for the same thing.... $105 plus what it cost me to ship it there.....

Was it protected in any sort of a case when you dropped it, or was it totally naked ?

Same here. I thought they were going to charge an arm and a leg, but $105 isn't bad in my opinion!

Lesson learned. Always put a case. You never know if a case could have reduced or prevented the damage.

oh wow that's really cheap! the cheapest i can find the part on eBay was $140, I rather send it in! thanks guys!
i had a case on mine, but had it off when i dropped it a couple nights ago. same story--phone still works, but the cracks the dropped caused left the screen unresponsive to touch.
i also heard the same thing from LG, but my biggest issue was that i wanted to retrieve data that i had on the phone. they said that they always wipe the data when they do any repairs on it, so i purchased that screen from china and am giving it a go on wednesday.
wish me luck! :fingers-crossed:
So, lol, the same thing happened to me. I wanted to post a pdf of the tear down guide that might help you guys, as I couldn't find it anywhere online.
I was going to order the part online, but after hearing about it being cheaper to send to LG, I might just do that instead!

Yeah, my phone was wiped, but I had nothing important on there. I haven't activated it to see if it is still rooted or not. I can't get past the activation screen without a SIM card.

To be honest it is cheaper then insurance..... I bought the ProtectCell after I broke the first one. and it is $200 or something up front plus $150 every time you break it.... Aka I could fix my phone 3 times before the insurance is a better deal.
Ughhh...same thing happened to me about an hour ago. Would one of you be able to share where you tracked down where to send it in. I'll start digging around for info on this, but thought I'd ask. Thanks!

Can't post a link since I'm new but lg(dot)com/us/support/repair-service/schedule-repair should work for you.
I dropped mine last week and called their 1-800 number to create a Return Authorization, rather than using the web page. Ended up being $146 to repair mine, which is still cheaper than local shops and far less risky than me trying to figure out how to do it solo. They received it Thursday, gave me the quote late Friday, and I called in to make the payment then. Hopefully it's repaired Monday and on it's way back to me by mid-week.

Awesome. Thanks so much for the reply. I think I will give them a ring tomorrow. I had found the LG repair link prior to your reply and, oddly enough, the G2 isn't even listed in the list of selectable products, so figured I'd have to call anyhow.
I'm generally extremely careful with my devices, maybe even anal, so I generally don't buy insurance. However, this is the second phone, after my G-Nexus, which has ended up with a smashed screen due to a freak accident. Starting to rethink my take on insurance......
Thanks again!

the lg g2 isn't listed because of the different model numbers (d800, vs980 etc), so just select the model you have. I'm waiting for my call from them now.

Thanks. I noticed that after the fact. Had been looking for the G2 so overlooked the other options. Ended up using the live chat option which worked very well. Also checked back in with live chat a few times to see where the process was at once I sent it in.
Long story longer, I will have mine back in my greedy little hands tomorrow if Fed-Ex holds up their end of the bargain. Like another poster stated, the repair cost was $146, which includes return shipping, plus my cost to send it to Texas. Took about 2-1/2 weeks total from the day I shipped to getting it back tomorrow. I saw another poster-or-two mentioned that their repair was quoted at $105. Not sure why mine and others were up at $146 since mine seemed like a pretty basic crack and I figured thus, it would be at the lower end of the reported repair chargees.
Looking forward to getting it back. Had already sold my G-Nex so I've been scraping by with my resurrected Palm Pre for the past couple weeks
